EVERTS WINS CITADELL
  • EVERTS (YAMAHA): "I had not the best start in the first race and on top of that I lost two places when I got stuck in an uphill. When I was back in eighth I just thought how far off another GP win in Namur was! I tried to relax and set up a good strategy for the rest of the race. I made the reflection that the tight lefthander before the steep drop-off leading to 'the chalet' was a good place to pass and that's where I passed one rider after the other. Obviously the others knew this for the second race, but it did not matter any more because I was in front from the beginning. I found some good lines around the track and I was always in control even when Townley started pushing near the end. I'm very happy with my win at Namur, it was hard today but it remains a very good place for me."
  • ANDREW McFARLANE WON MX2: “Things just went really well for me today, and with so many GPs to go, and everybody very even in the standings, this actually feels like a fresh start. I just felt very comfortable this weekend, and my two good starts were a big help. Because the conditions were tricky, I knew how important it was to stay out of trouble, and that’s exactly what I did. It was my goal to move things forward here, because finally I’m completely healthy. And since I have lived in Belgium for some time now, the win has a really nice touch to it as well.”

Townley challenges at the Citadelle.

  • The historical “Citadelle” circuit in Namur has played host to the fourth round of the MX1 world championship. KTM’s key man, Ben Townley, was determined to get back into the championship fight at the famous Belgian circuit when he went 7-2 to post a well deserved third overall.
  • Townley seemed to be riding quite reserved as scattered rain showers over the weekend had made the more the circuit extremely difficult and unpredictable. BT never quite found his rhythm in the first race however he did manage a last minute charge which saw him catch fellow countryman and housemate, Josh Coppins to finish seventh.
  • The second heat would most certainly be a form of redemption for Townley. He capitalized on a reasonable start and quickly moved passed the Dane, Brian Jorgensen into second position while Everts was setting the pace up front. Townley tailed the Belgian for most of the race however it was in the closing stages of the race when the Belgian crowd got to its feet. The young New Zealander had succeeded in closing down a sizeable gap and was now reeling in the master. Going into the last lap Townley was all over Everts and as he tried to make his move in the whoops BT made a slight mistake which handed Everts victory.
  • “I have mixed feelings about today. The first heat I was riding too cautious and didn’t take any risks which just cost me so much ground. Towards the end I picked up the pace and then finished strong. The second race was way better and I found my rhythm right from the start. I got by some guys really quickly and was about five seconds behind Stefan. I pushed really hard to catch him and I almost got him on the last lap. It was close!” said BT.

Coppins survives the Citadelle.

  • Unfavourable weather conditions have turned the famous Citadelle circuit in Namen into a mud bath for the fourth round of the MX1 world championship series. For CAS Honda man, Josh Coppins, it was a matter of survival. The Kiwi posted two consistent 6 place finishes however he had set his sights on victory - something that just eluded him last year.
  • Coppins missed out on his usual hole-shot and had to fight his way into the top ten as the race got underway. Passing was difficult in the mud however he managed to slip by a few riders and halfway through the race Lizzard also got by Townley. Coppins could just not manage to reel in Smets and had to be content with sixth spot.
  • Knowing the start would be a deciding factor, Coppins could not capitalise on it and was once again fighting for a position inside the top ten. He managed to salvage a few place and once again came home in sixth, surviving the treacherous Namur circuit.
  • “I didn’t get the starts I wanted. The track was really difficult and I knew it was going to be hard to pass but I just had to make the most of the situation. I’m happy about racing in Germany next week – at least it will be easier to pass and it won’t depend on where you start the race,” explained Coppins.
