KTM
/ TOWNLEY REPORT: MX1
Townley back
on the box with victory at the Isle of Wight.
- After a spell of
unlucky falls and injuries, KTM factory man, Ben Townley, has warded
off all challenges to take victory at the 15th round of the MX1 world
championships at the Gore Basin circuit on the Isle of Wight. Townley
looked awesome the entire weekend and his radiant smile upon arrival
on Friday at the circuit was a portent of the result that would follow.
- Thousands of air
horns sounded as the gate dropped for the first MX1 heat. Townley got
entangled in mid pack but cut through the field like a man possessed.
The factory KTM rocketed into seventh place on the opening lap and immediately
began to pressurize points leader, Stefan Everts. The Belgian held off
Townley as long as he could but he was no match for the young, determined
challenger. Townley disposed of Everts within two laps and set his sights
on fellow Kiwi, Josh Coppins. BT caught and passed his countryman and
was in a podium position however the race was far from over. He took
the bit between his teeth and started to reel in the leading duo of
Steve Ramon and Mikael Pichon. The crowd went mad when Townley closed
down the Frenchman on the last lap and with a last minute dash the two
went side by side into the final section of circuit. Elbows rubbed however
it was Pichon who had the better line with Townley having to settle
for third spot and a masterful come back.
- BT would once again
have to work his magic at the start of the second moto. He trailed Pichon
going into the first turn and managed to jump passed a gaggle of riders
as he tripled the uphill step jump however he was still out of the top
five. Three sections later, BT appeared through the whoops in second
spot and within the lap he was into the lead and checking out at a serious
pace. The crowd were loving every second of the Kiwi phenomenon and
‘oohs’ and ‘aahs’ echoed through the Gore Basin
as Townley scrubbed and whipped his factory KTM over the obstacles.
There was no challenge for the twenty-year-old has he cruised to victory
and his fourth GP success of the season!
- “It has been
a goal of mine recently to go after the last three Grand Prix victories
and I have got one so there are two more to go. I am riding good at
the moment and we have some good tracks to end the season; I can’t
wait. They did a good job with the track today considering that it was
over-watered this morning. They got the diggers out and corrected the
mistake so I want to congratulate them.
- I worked hard on
my starts during the week but I guess I have to keep on working! I battled
hard with Stefan in the first race, I caught Josh and it was pretty
hectic racing out there. In the second moto I made a push for the lead
on the first lap and was able to get my times down. Half way through
I thought I had over-done it because I was making a few mistakes but
I settled and finally took the victory so I am really happy,”
explained Townley.
- BT heads to the
Netherlands for the penultimate round of the MX1 series to be held next
weekend at the tough and demanding sand circuit of Lierop.
YAMAHA
/ EVERTS REPORT: MX1
Everts forced
to settle for fifth in England
- Stefan Everts could
rise no higher than fifth this afternoon at a hot and sunny Gore-Basin
circuit on the Isle of Wight for the Grand Prix of England, the fifteenth
round of the FIM 2005 World Championship. The Belgian has however drawn
closer to a ninth title with just two rounds remaining in the MX1 series.
- Even though he
surrendered eight points to Coppins to make a new lead of forty-five,
a ninth World Championship is now realistically within reach for Everts
with only a hundred points left to win and trips to Holland next week
(Lierop) and Northern Ireland (Desertmartin) in a fortnight's time.
- Finally some decent
summer weather greeted the Grand Prix paddock after a month of three
races dampened by rain and affected by heavy muddy conditions. 25,000
spectators turned out to watch the World Championship campaign enter
its final stages. The track, scenic, spectacular -with a lot of jumps-
and challenging, is popular with the fans and also the riders. The soft
dirt quickly became rough and technical with several lines on offer
around the course allowing some interesting racing as the gaps between
the riders fluctuated.
- Everts, who clocked
the fourth quickest lap in timed practice, confessed that he did not
feel in-tune with the circuit over the weekend and although he started
within the top ten during both motos was unable to challenge the Steve
Ramon and Ben Townley who broke free in each respective race. The 32-year
old took part in an electric five rider dice for fourth position in
the first moto and lost time to the front three when he struggled to
find a way past team-mate Brian Jorgensen. Everts' fifth place was almost
improved on during the second moto when he moved into third but a mistake
coming out of the whoops meant that he became entangled in a battle
with Pichon and Coppins and could not pip a fading Ramon for fourth
approaching the chequered flag.
- Brian Jorgensen
was not pleased with his Saturday effort of nineteenth fastest but started
brightly in the first moto and was part of the same thrilling battle
for fourth position, finally taking sixth behind Everts. In the second
race three crashes saw the Dane end up outside of the points.
- The Yamaha L&M
Motocross team have won six Grand Prix (from fifteen) and eleven motos
(from thirty) so far this season.
- Stefan Everts (Yamaha
L&M Motocross Team) - fifth overall
"Today was not my best day. I had a real battle with the track.
In the first moto I had trouble passing my team-mate, after that I had
a few good laps but finally took fifth. In the second moto I was third
for a while but Coppins had started to push and I made a big mistake
in the whoops and went off the track. From that moment I turned the
gas back and stayed in fifth. When Ramon was slowing down at the end
I tried to catch him but it was too late."
COPPINS
/ HONDA MX1 REPORT
Coppins pulls
back valuable points at British GP
- With the memory
of his first ever GP victory claimed at the Gore Basin circuit a year
ago, CAS Honda racer, Josh Coppins had high expectations coming into
the 15th round of the MX1 series at the Isle of Wight. The Kiwi could
not go home with victory however he did prove that his determination
and fighting spirit have won him back eight valuable points as he keeps
his championship hopes alive.
- Close to thirty
thousand enthusiastic English fans lined the boundary fences to see
the gate drop for the first MX1 race. The CAS Honda star almost grabbed
the hole-shot however, Belgian Steve Ramon, managed to take the advantage
but overshot the next corner and pushed Coppins wide, losing the Kiwi
precious time and positions. The worst was feared when Coppins signalled
to the CAS Honda pits that something was not right with his machine
in the opening laps of the race. He kept circulating at race pace but
lost his third position to fellow Kiwi, Ben Townley. Everts was now
behind Coppins and breathing down his neck. The New Zealander never
once panicked and managed to find some extra seconds and succeeded in
pulling away from his championship rival. He crossed the finish line
in fourth but was not happy with the result due to a carburetion hitch.
- Coppins could not
count on his usual great start and race two would see the Kiwi having
to elbow his way through the pack in the opening laps. ‘Lizzard’
soon caught Everts who was in fourth and started to hound the Belgian
at every opportunity. Coppins stalled his bike as he exited the whoop
section and lost a position to Pichon and valuable time on the train
in front. He quickly got his bike going and what was to follow totally
had the cheering fans gob smacked. Coppins shut down Pichon, Everts
and Ramon in the latter half of the race and left them trailing in his
dust. The amazing speed which he was carrying took him to within five
seconds of fellow Kiwi Ben Townley by the time the chequered flag had
been waved – an amazing show of raw speed and determination.
- “I didn’t
have the best of starts this weekend,” explained Coppins with
disappointment. “We had some small problems in both motos but
no complaints; I did the best I could. It just wasn’t my weekend.
I was riding pretty well and quite fast but it just didn’t come
off for me – sometimes it’s like that. I rode pretty bad
in Germany and got on the podium and I rode well here today and didn’t.”
