MX1 REPORT: MX1 : Everts returns to winning form in Germany
- Round 14 of the
world motocross championship visited the picturesque but muddy circuit
of Gaildorf this weekend. Motocross legend Stefan Everts won both races
and consequently claimed the 85th GP win of his career. Fellow Belgian
Steve Ramon (KTM) and Joshua Coppins (Honda) joined Everts on the podium.
Whilst Stefan now leads the championship standings by 53 points over
Coppins (Honda), his Yamaha L&M Motocross Team mate Brian Jorgensen
had a difficult weekend with 16th position. Jorgensen is currently eleventh
in standings.
- The
swampy grass hills of Gaildorf, 80 km north from Stuttgart, were the
perfect playground for a hungry Stefan Everts to show the world his
unrivalled talent for slippery and muddy conditions. With some parts
of the track actually providing grip and others almost nothing at all
riders were on a continuous research to find the best balance. A 12000
strong crowd saw Stefan Everts lead the opening race from start to finish.
Ramon took second ahead of Townley and Pichon who made an impressive
comeback from dead last in the start. Early on Luigi Seguy (JK Racing)
had been holding a promising fourth but the Frenchman had to settle
for sixth in the end.
- Drier
and bumpier, the track conditions had improved for the second race,
but series leader Everts was every bit as determined to stamp his authority
on the event. Stefan again pulled away from the pack, but had a bit
of luck on his side to take the win. In the final minutes of the race
Stefan made a mistake and crashed on a tricky, sloped corner. As Everts
was trying to start his bike again Pichon had caught up with him, but
got stuck in the very same corner. On his second attempt Everts got
his YZ450FM running again. The Yamaha L&M Motocross rider won ahead
of Tanel Leok (Kawasaki) and Joshua Coppins (Honda). Brian Jorgensen
finished his second race in eleventh position.
- Round
fifteen of the series takes place next week at the Isle of Wight, United
Kingdom
- Stefan
Everts (Yamaha L&M Motocross Team) - overall winner
"It has happened before that I had a long 'dry spell' of not winning
GPs so that is ok, but I'm very happy with this victory. I was very
close in South-Africa, it has costed a lot of effort but every GP I
kept on fighting to win and that is why I'm very happy with this victory.
I was a little bit worried in the second race when I got stuck in the
ruts, and crashed but everything worked out in the end. It was also
good to take some points back on Coppins and I hope to continue in the
same way for the end of the season."
- Brian Jorgensen
(Yamaha L&M Motocross Team) - 16th overall
"Under dry conditions this is one of my favourite tracks, and my
qualifying was quite good but Sunday didn't bring me any luck. I did
not have a good start in the first race and I crashed in the second
corner. Two more crashes followed and I decided to pull out on the third
lap. I had another bad start in the second race, but I tried to catch
up with a group of four or five riders in front of me. Unfortunately
it did not work out, I found two passing opportunities on the track
but no matter what I tried Leuret was defending his lines and he just
did everything to block me. It was not worth crashing and I finished
eleventh. "
COPPINS
/ HONDA MX1 REPORT
- Coppins
on the podium in demanding conditions.
- The GP of Gaildorf
has not been so favourable for CAS Honda star, Josh Coppins. The New
Zealander battled to find his true speed in the tough and muddy conditions
and had to forfeit valuable points in his challenge for the MX1 title.
- Coppins looked
to have the hole-shot going into the first turn and had the advantage
of clear vision but a corner later the CAS Honda rider got stuck in
a deep rut and lost his lead. Coppins managed to free his bike and get
going but was seven positions down the field with a whole lot of work
ahead of him. He was among many riders to taste the Gaildorf mud and
after the kiwi had fallen for the second time he managed to settle into
his own rhythm and claw back his lost positions to salvage fifth place
by the end of the race.
- Coppins would have
a great start in the second heat as well but was forced aside by Stefan
Everts who took command of the lead. ‘Lizzard’ was trying
to find his rythym in the opening laps and settled in fourth place behind
Tanel Leok. For twenty-five gruelling minutes he hounded the Estonian
but with three laps to go mayhem broke loose up front. Everts and Pichon
both fumbled however the Belgian managed to regain his lead which left
Leok in second and Coppins in third. Coppins tried all could to pass
the Estonian but had to settle for third and third overall for the GP.
- “ I had two
good starts from the eighth gate so I was really pleased with that.
The first heat was really tough for me – I got stuck two times
and crashed two times but I still managed to come back to fifth but
I was not riding good. My bike was working really well on the starts
today and the second heat was much better for me. I rode a lot more
relaxed in the second moto but I was quite tired at the end of the race,”
explained Coppins.
KTM
/ TOWNLEY REPORT: MX1
- Tough conditions
in Gaildorf make work for Townley.
- An entire weekend
of rain and rough track conditions have taken their toll on the GP riders.
Ben Townley was not spared with having to fight through both races to
salvage some valuable championship points.
- The first turn
would no doubt be a lottery with Townley managing to stay out of trouble.
The New Zealander emerged in fourth on the opening lap and quickly moved
to third position behind KTM team-mate Steve Ramon and Stefan Everts.
Townley was making good time on the two Belgians when he went down in
the mud and was relegated to sixth. He regained his composure and once
again charged through the pack only to go down for the second time.
The resilient Kiwi was not counted out yet and put together a fast string
of laps which would rocket the KTM 450 to third place with two laps
to go. Townley was the only rider who dared to jump the spectacular
triple jump and he went on to lap six seconds faster than leader Everts
on the final lap and closed the gap immensely.
- The second heat
saw Townley neatly placed in third after a tight first turn tussle.
BT was about to make a move on second place man Tanel Leok, when his
back end slid out and he could not avoid crashing. Townley rejoined
the pack with a huge task ahead and fought for every position he could.
He broke into the top ten before the halfway mark and was making ground
on the top five. Townley succeeded in moving up to seventh position
by the time the chequered flag fell.
- “ I really
had to dig deep” explained an exhausted Townley “I tried
too hard and went down twice in the first heat. After that came I back
really strong and I was happy with that. I pushed too hard in the second
heat - fighting through the pack really takes a lot of energy and gave
it all I had today. I’m trying too hard at the moment. I need
to relax a bit more and let it come to me. I had my sights set on a
podium overall but I guess that will have to wait another week.”

MX2 REPORT: Cairoli dominates as Yamaha wraps up the manufacturer's title
- Despite the thick
mud that covered the Gaildorf track Antonio Cairoli (Team Yamaha De
Carli) had good starts and never looked back, battling to overall victory
by claiming dominant wins in both races. The young Italian looked at
ease throughout and impressed with his control and speed in extreme
conditions.
- Championship contender
Andrew McFarlane (Ricci Racing) scored a solid second in the opening
race but lost valuable points in the second race with a disappointing
13th place. Carl Nunn and the surprising Manuel Monni (both KTM) completed
the podium. Cairoli leads the series on 501 points, with McFarlane 19
points adrift. Chiodi is still third in the standings on 427 points.
- With three of the
17 rounds remaining it is mathematically confirmed that Yamaha will
take the manufacturer's title. Four of the first current five riders
are Yamaha mounted and blue bikes have now won 20 from 28 motos thanks
to the efforts of five different riders (McFarlane, Cairoli, Mackenzie,
Boissiere and Guarneri). Yamaha currently leads the standings with 341
points, and has a massive 83-point lead over second placed KTM, Kawasaki
is another 13 points adrift.
- The track changed
just a little throughout the day. Overnight rainfall on the hard and
clayish soil produced a very muddy and rutted course but it dried out
slightly in the afternoon. In reality this meant that the first race
was mainly a struggle to keep upright and the start proved even more
crucial than normally. The second race only offered a variation on the
first theme so far that the few rutted racing lines around the track
had started to dry out. Cairoli proved a master in the mud and won both
races uncontested. Ricci team mates Guarneri and McFarlane finished
respectively fourth and fifth overall, while a strong third in the second
race helped YZ250F mounted Mickael Maschio (Team Yamaha Evolution) to
sixth overall. A heavy crash involving Cédric Melotte Saturday
afternoon led to breaking his right radius, ruling the Yamaha L&M
Motocross Team rider out of action for the remainder of the season.
- Antonio Cairoli
(Team Yamaha De Carli) - overall winner
"In the winter I rode a lot in tough and muddy conditions in Belgium
and this has helped me a great deal. Even during practice you are competing
against some of the fastest riders in the world and the tracks are rough
just like they are in the world championship. Of course, riding was
hard on a track like this, but it is actually ok when you can go out
in front and your vision is not ruined by riders in font of you. I'm
really in good shape now and I'm looking forward to the last couple
of races of the season."
- Andrew McFarlane (Ricci
Racing) - fifth overall
"My weekend started bad during qualifying on Saturday, somebody
took me out during the race and as a consequence I was only 19th on
the gate. I had a good start, found some great lines and I could pass
many riders early on. Unfortunately Cairoli had made gap by the time
I had passed Guarneri for second. Luck was again not on my side in the
second race when Caps crashed in front of me, everybody tried to avoid
him and Dereuver hit me in the action. This has not been a good weekend
for me, but the championship is not over yet. I will keep on fighting
till the end and hopefully I can produce a strong result next week."
