YAMAHA
MX1 REPORT: MX1 : Everts rescues podium at Loket
- The day after confirming
that he will see out the final year of a record-breaking glorious career
by signing with Yamaha for a sixth and last World Championship campaign
in 2006, Stefan Everts was able to salvage an excellent second position
at an overcast Loket circuit for the Grand Prix of Czech Republic; the
twelfth round of seventeen in the premier FIM MX1 series.
- The Belgian
convincingly owned the first moto in front of 19,000 spectators who
braved the low temperatures and showers. Everts overtook hole-shotting
team-mate Brian Jorgensen and proceeded to show Mickael Pichon (Honda)
around the Czech slopes that were fast, slippery and allowed precious
few passing possibilities.
- The second
moto began in explosive style as a first corner pile-up claimed a number
of casualties including Steve Ramon (KTM), Pichon and Everts. The eight
time world champ began a long haul through the pack from almost dead-last
in a prolonged rainfall that caused the track to get rougher and more
technical. His forty minute charge was rewarded with fourth position
on the final lap as he dove past Ken de Dycker (Honda). Kevin Strijbos
(Suzuki) won his first ever Grand Prix with success in the second sprint.
Everts' title rival Josh Coppins (Honda) who finished third in moto
1 was bumped back to third on the podium.
- Jorgensen
dropped back to sixth in the first moto after suffering with arm-pump
and then fell in the closing stages to finally cross the line in ninth.
Unable to make an impact in the second moto after a poor start and narrowly
avoiding the chaos that caught Everts, the Dane could only manage fifteenth
by the flag.
- JK Racing
Yamaha rider Luigi Seguy was running in third position during the formative
stages of the second moto before slowly slipping back to sixth. The
Frenchman was the second highest Yamaha rider with seventh overall;
one of his best results of the season.
- Everts has
been watching Coppins chip away at his points lead in the World Championship
for the last four races but has now managed to stop the rot, even if
the reverse was only by a single point. The gap now stands at 39. Everts
has won eight from twenty-six motos prior to Loket but had missed the
podium only twice in thirteen Grand Prix.
- The World
Championships now have a free weekend before the last four races occur
in a hectic five week period. The paddock next convenes at Gaildorf
for the Grand Prix of Germany on August 20th/21st.
- Stefan Everts
(Yamaha L&M Motocross Team) - second overall
"Somebody was a little bit too fast in the first corner and took
a few riders down; I think that in every GP I have to crash at least
once and comeback through at the moment! It has been a tough season
so far. I did my best today and finally I was able to pass Ken de Dycker
on the last lap for fourth position. I think with the rain the track
got a lot better, it was more slippery and the speed came down. I am
really glad that I am still on the podium and the championship has more
or less stayed the same so I am really happy for that."
- Brian Jorgensen
(Yamaha L&M Motocross Team) - 12th overall
"In the first moto I felt like I was riding really good. I knew
Stefan was right behind me at the beginning but I was holding the pace
well for the first eight laps. He started to come closer so I tried
to push harder and got arm-pump in one lap. It was difficult after that
to control the bike and I dropped back to sixth. With a lap to go I
got too aggressive in one corner and the back end spun around making
me crash so I ended up ninth. In the second moto I don't know how but
I missed the start completely. There were some massive crashes on the
first lap and I got caught up in the first corner. I tried to get through
that second moto and it was nothing special."
COPPINS
/ HONDA MX1 REPORT
- Coppins
fights to keep in the points hunt
- The famous Loket
circuit, situated just across the German-Czech border has played host
to the 13th round of the MX GP World championships. CAS Honda man, Josh
Coppins, has lost one point to arch rival, Stefan Everts in the championship
standings despite some tough luck over the weekend.
- Coppins could just
about avoid a first turn pile up as Spanish rider Jonathan Barragan
clashed with the CAS Honda. It took Lizzard a few laps to regain his
composure however he was constantly posting the fastest split and looked
to be making some headway on the leaders when he moved into third position
around the halfway mark. Coppins pushed his machine to the limit and
spectators thought that it would be battle of the titans as both Coppins
and Pichon had closed the gap on Everts. A few minor errors in the dieing
minutes of the race gave Pichon and Everts just enough breathing room
to take honours but Coppins had proved that he was carrying superior
speed.
- Dark clouds threatened
another downpour for race two nevertheless Coppins’s lightening
quick reactions saw him grabbing the hole-shot but then losing it to
Belgian, Kevin Strijbos as he exited the first turn. Lizzard lost the
use of his roll offs on the second lap and with the consistent rain
he had a difficult task ahead of him. The CAS Honda lost no time and
powered its way up the inside of a difficult off camber to snatch the
lead from Strijbos. Battling with his vision, Coppins managed to keep
Strijbos at bay but with ten minutes to go he made a small error and
lost the lead. Unable to take the punishment of the pebbly soil, Coppins
had to settle for second spot.
- “ Today has
been quite difficult. I almost went down in the start in the first race
but managed to keep on the bike. I came back quite good and had great
speed in the middle of the race. I was able to catch up to Stefan and
Mickael so I was quite happy with that. In the second heat I broke my
roll offs two laps into the race and battled to see the lines which
made things quite difficult. I’ll race in my home town in Balen
next with Ben. It’s a heavy sand track so it will be good to do
some testing with the bike before Lierop and improve my sand riding,”
explained Coppins
KTM
/ TOWNLEY REPORT: MX1
- Townley
recovers with impressive speed.
- Poor weather conditions
have hampered the Czech GP held in Loket this weekend for the 13th round
of the MX GP series. KTM’s Ben Townley, was not perturbed by the
challenging conditions and proved that he is one step closer to getting
back to his former speed and hopefully, winning ways.
- Riders were faced
with a wet circuit before the start of the first heat with scattered
rainfall not making for ideal race conditions. Townley managed to avoid
any first turn tussles and within two laps was into fifth position,
just ahead of fellow Kiwi, Josh Coppins. Townley’s luck would
let him down a lap later as he tried to make a pass on Yves Demaria
by ducking up the inside of the French veteran. BT remounted and managed
to fight his way back from ninth to fifth place by the end of the 35
minute moto often showing glimpses of great speed.
- In race two, BT
was involved in a first turn pile up but still managed to keep his bike
upright only losing minimal time. He miraculously recovered to 11th
place within the first lap and was showing amazing speed. Five laps
later, the resilient Kiwi was in third and running the fastest lap time
every lap even though he had lost the use of goggles. BT worked hard
at bringing down an 11 second deficit to within 4 seconds of the leading
duo of Strijbos and Coppins with two laps to go. Townley crossed the
finish line in third spot showing that his former speed was back to
where it should be.
- “ It’s
been a better day than the last two GP’s! I was happy to finish
both races. It took me a while to get back into the first race after
the crash but I finished the race pretty strong. The second race I was
hoping to be up front in the but I went down in the start and came back
from last to third which wasn’t too bad. My goal for the next
GP is to get back on the podium and win some races,” vowed Townley.
