YAMAHA
MX1 REPORT:
- Yamaha L&M
Motocross Team riders Stefan Everts and Brian Jorgensen finished third
and eleventh respectively in a muddy round twelve of the MX1 Motocross
World Championship at Nismes, Belgium today. Mickael Pichon (Honda)
made a successful comeback to GP racing claiming the GP win ahead of
Joshua Coppins (Honda). Everts remains firmly in control of the series
with a 38-point margin over second placed Coppins. Denmark's Brian Jorgensen
is now tenth in standings.
- Brian Jorgensen
produced another strong start in the opening MX 1 race to take the lead
on the first two laps. Jorgensen was passed early on for the lead by
Pichon. While fighting duo Coppins and Leuret took advantage from Jorgensen's
weak fifth lap to pass the Dane. "Jorgi" rode consistently
fast for the rest of the race, but could not close the gap with Coppins
and Leuret. Brian's team mate Stefan Everts finished heat one in fifth
after an impressive comeback from seventeenth.
- Both Everts and
Jorgensen were at the front at the start of the second race, following
early leader Pichon. Unfortunately Jorgensen could not capitalize on
his good form as the bike stalled on the fourth lap. Smets (Suzuki)
could not avoid Jorgensen and ran into him, damaging the silencer of
Brian's bike. Jorgensen had to come in for another silencer to continue
the race and would finish 21st in the end, just outside of the point
scoring rostrum. Eight-time world champion Everts showcased his skills
in slippery conditions and passed Pichon with five laps to go. Everts
quickly pulled away from his French opponent to take a well earned race
win. YZ450F mounted Manuel Priem (Van Beers Yamaha) rode to his best
result of the season with a credible fifth place.
- Round thirteen
of the series takes place next week in Loket, Czech Republic.
- Stefan Everts (Yamaha
L&M Motocross Team) - third overall
"I don't even clearly remember what caused my crash at the start
of the first race. I hit a small rut and was thrown off. It was difficult
to come back because the track allowed only one line. I was not so happy
with fifth, and I have been having way too many comeback races lately
so it was quite frustrating. I wanted my revenge in the second race
and this time I had a good start. I saw Pichon making some mistakes
after twenty minutes and my physical condition allowed me to outpace
him near the end of the race. It's a pity that I could not offer my
home crowd a GP win, and my 85th win takes a bit longer than expected
but I'll try again next week."
- Brian Jorgensen
(Yamaha L&M Motocross Team) - 11th overall
"After the bike stalled in the second race I tried to picked it
up, but Smets ran straight in to the silencer and it broke. It was hard
to get the bike going again with a broken silencer, and I had to come
in to get a new one. I tried to make the best of the situation when
I restarted, although I was already lapped. Unfortunately I got a lot
of mud in my goggles and for four laps I tried to remove the mud to
preserve my goggles, but it didn't work. Overall it was a disappointing
weekend because I had two excellent starts and my speed was good on
Saturday and on Sunday. I was just a little bit too slow at the start
of the opening race, but my results should have been a lot better here."
COPPINS
/ HONDA MX1 REPORT
Coppins shows
amazing fight at Nismes
- Josh Coppins has
shown his true fighting spirit at the twelfth round of the MX1 world
motocross championship in Nismes Belgium. A rain drenched crowd witnessed
an amazing Coppins surge in the second moto to claim second overall
and move one point closer to his arch rival, Stefan Everts.
- Riders were lucky
to start the first moto in somewhat drier conditions. Coppins managed
to hug a tight line around the first turn and made up a handful of places
by going around the outside of the next corner. As the pack settled
into a race rhythm, Lizzard was forth and making huge ground on Pascal
Leuret and Brian Jorgensen. It took the CAS Honda a couple of laps to
take hold of second place and give chase to Frenchman, Mickael Pichon
who had succeeded in pulling a reasonable gap. Coppins kept his head
down and started to eat into Pichon’s lead. The clock would be
against the Kiwi as he ran out of time however he did succeed in closing
the gap substantially to settle for second.
- Coppins went down
in the second turn of race two as he could not avoid hitting a fallen,
fellow Honda rider, Pascal Leuret. The heavens had opened in the meantime
and Coppins’s hopes of a GP podium looked dismal. ‘Lizzard’
took the bit between his teeth and started his charge through the pack.
Within two laps he had broken the top ten and was posting the fastest
lap time with ease. By the halfway mark Coppins had amazingly rocketed
into third position and was rapidly closing down the leading duo of
Pichon and Everts. Pichon made a mistake with five laps to go and handed
Everts the lead. Coppins could smell the fumes of the Frenchman’s
Honda and having lost his goggles due to the rain, he had to avoid getting
roosted by Pichon by changing his racing lines. Still he pushed on and
started to pressurize Pichon for second place. As the chequered flag
fell, the CAS Honda rider had done all in his power to rebound from
stone last to an awesome third position.
- “ I was fast
enough to gain more points today so I am bit disappointed that I couldn’t
capitalize on that. I put my heart and soul into the second moto and
I did all I could to try and pass Pichon. We can be happy with the work
the organisers did on the track last night and all weekend. The conditions
could have been a lot worse but they did a great job. I’m looking
forward to Loket next weekend. I like the track there, in fact there
are some good tracks coming up and I like all of them,” explained
a confident Coppins.
KTM
/ TOWNLEY REPORT: MX1
Belgian
GP takes its toll on Townley.
- KTM factory rider,
Ben Townley, has had a disappointing weekend that has been marred by
bad starts and bad luck. Scattered showers made the spectacular Nismes
circuit all the more technical nevertheless organisers did all in their
power to keep the track in the best possible race condition.
- Townley had a lot
of work to do as he was not placed well going into the first turn of
race one. He did emerge a lap later in the top ten and was moving through
the pack. After making his move on the Belgians, Ramon and Smets, Townley
was up to fifth and had his sights set on a podium spot. BT made a small
mistake which would cost him dearly however he managed to pick up his
machine and rejoin the race, still in the top ten. Again he gave chase
and upped his lap times towards the end of the race to finish seventh
– a position that was certainly not a true reflection of his speed.
- The second heat
would prove to be an even tougher battle for BT. Once again a mediocre
start could would leave the Kiwi with loads of work to do. With two
laps gone, the worst was feared when Townley pointed to his rear brake
pedal as he passed the pit lane. BT had lost the brake pedal as he tussled
through the pack and with a constant drizzle coming down the circuit
became an ice-rink. With no rear brake, Townley went down at least three
times during the course of the race. Rather than give up, he soldiered
on and still managed to salvage thirteenth position.
- “I don’t
know where to begin” said the twenty-year-old with his head in
hands. “It has been a really tough weekend. I practiced my starts
in the week and they were spot on. Today I had two bad starts which
left me with plenty of work to do – I don’t know what I
was doing wrong. It was really difficult riding without a rear brake
in the second moto and I went down three times in the process. When
I have a bad day it really goes wrong - this is definitely something
I have to work on. We have the Czech GP next weekend and I like the
track. I’m going to focus on getting back to where I should be,”
vowed Townley.
