TEST, MARCH, 2005
MAR 4,
2005 - FINAL TEST
- 1
Makoto Tamada Honda 1m 57.63s
"I'm very happy for all we have done in these three days since
I have been the fastest rider during the second and the third day.
My biggest satisfaction, apart from the lap times we have obtained,
is the feeling I have found with the bike. We confirmed also, after
the performances during the Sepang and Phillip Island tests, that
the package we have at our disposal for the season 2005 is at a
highest level compare to the one we had the past season. Therefore
I'm very trustful and I hope to be able to always perform at the
maximum level during the season which is about to begin."

Gibernau, Honda 1m 57.26
"Considering my physical conditions, I can be quite satisfied
of the work done. We focused on tyre testing and even if I was not
100% fit, I did the minimum work required for this test session.
We are confirming the work done in Malaysia and Australia, there
is still some things to improve and I hope that there will be some
new things for Barcelona.”

Capirossi, Ducati
1m 57.320
"I am quite pleased with the work we have done over the past
three days. We're still not 100% right with the front but we are
on the right path. The GP5 is also going really well on this track
and I am sure that the tyres will show further improvement before
we come here to race in October. I didn't want to use a qualifying
tyre because we concentrated on development work that was far too
important to be distracted by the search for sensational times:
we are working calmly, there will be time for that in the future"

Valentino Rossi , Yamaha,
1m 29.68
"This morning we tried some different settings from yesterday
and they worked better. We found more agility in the bike. Then
we continued testing tyres for Michelin, which were good. The test
has been quite positive and we have collected some useful information
which we'll continue to work with when we return here soon."
2.
Nicky Hayden , Honda , 1m 29.78
"Today was the best day of the test for me, I got a good, long
run in and recognised a bit more where we need to improve, both
myself and the machine. I felt good and we made some positive steps
forward and the race time I did was 28 seconds faster than my race
time last year so we're pretty happy with that - but it's still
not enough. We'll take away what we've learnt here and move on to
Qatar. I tried both chassis options that we've got and we learned
a lot about the differences but overall I just felt more consistent
today and some of that's down to me getting into a rut yesterday.
We're still a new team but the atmosphere's good and we're gelling
really well."
3.
Carlos Checa , Ducati , 1m 29.86
"I am really happy with this testing session, with my team
and with my bike" declared Carlos. "We found a good base
set-up for the Desmosedici and some very interesting indications
on which to work in the future. Now it's time for a short break
and then we'll be back to work in Qatar"
4. Max Biaggi , Honda - 1.29.88
"I am tired today after so many laps but I wanted to give Michelin
the information they needed from the tyres they asked me to test
- but I was praying for the red light at the end of the pitlane
to end the day's testing! At times today it was a little difficult
as there were some spots of rain which did little for your confidence,
especially in the fast sweep into turn one. Overall we have had
a good test and confirmed our feeling and direction with the machine
set-up following last week's test in Sepang. We know the areas we
need to improve on and we have three tests in March to achieve that."
5. Loris Capirossi , Ducati , 1m 30.18
"I'm generally pretty pleased with my pace, which was quite
good for several successive laps at around 1m30s" said Capirossi.
"We still have to do a bit more work over the longer distance,
but I and my team are ready!"

"Today we were looking for the confirmation of the work done
at Sepang and I'm very satisfied because we lapped fast from the
very beginning. We worked on the chassis and did front and rear
tire testing. As we had nothing new to test we concentrated on doing
quality laps, riding constantly on a rhythm of 1m 30s"
- 2.
Nicky Hayden , Honda, 1m 30.530
"I've managed to get my best ever lap around here and we're
still on last year's race tires. We've re-conformed a lot of settings
with the new 2005 machine after three days in Malaysia last week.
The Phillip Island circuit has always held a problem for me getting
onto the start and finish straight, in the past I've been sliding
around so today we concentrated on trying to solve that problem
and just about did"
- 3.
Valentino Rossi , Yamaha, 1m 30.55
"Today was not so bad. We arrived and straight away found some
improvements compared to the bike we had during the October race.
We’ve improved the stability and the engine is a little bit
faster. We still have work to do on the settings to find a better
front-end feeling, so we’ll continue to look for this over
the next two days of this test and see if we can make further improvements.
We also tested some Michelin tyres today and we’re confident
that the bike is getting better. We’re pleased with the work
we’ve done this first day.”

able to test. I felt a bit better today and this morning we did
a good job. We made some good laps and a race simulation, but I
started to feel tired again over the last five laps. The bike is
good and I have a good feeling with it; we've fixed some problems
and tried some new tyres. Now I need to go and get some sleep so
I can be ready to test in Phillip Island."

" ...the fast lap time didn't really matter yesterday and it
doesn't matter too much today but it's still good to record the
fastest lap of the day - for everyone in the team, from the last
technician to the first engineer. But we are still at the beginning
of a long path and we still have a lot of new parts to try so the
hard work will continue tomorrow. I didn't even try new tires today
- the track is very slippery because of the high temperature and
humidity but tomorrow we will try the new tires from Michelin."

Rossi (Yamaha):
"... I am very happy with this test, especially today. It's
been a very important test with the new bike, and we've done some
good work. We did quite a few laps together today and the bike felt
really good, as did the tyres. We've improved from the race last
year and from the last test in November, which is encouraging. We
still have a lot of things to test with the new bike and a lot of
work to do, but we are looking forward to another good test next
month."
- Yamaha
(Jeremy Burgess):
"... The test has been a success and we're on schedule. The
lap times have been better and we've improved the new bike; we're
not unhappy in any regard. This is only the first test of the year,
but Yamaha has done an excellent job and given us a good bike, so
now it's up to us to get it ready for the start of the season."
- Colin
Edwards (Yamaha):
"... Today was good. I did a long run of laps in the hottest
part of the day, and the wind had changed so all the braking markers
were different! It took me a couple of laps to readjust and I made
a few mistakes, but once I got settled I kept a good pace and it
all felt okay. I'm leaving here on a positive note and I'm pleased
with what we've achieved. I can't wait to come back and hopefully
carry on the good work!"
- Toni
Elias (Yamaha):
"... I'm really satisfied because things were tough after my
crash on Sunday but in the end we were able to complete the testing
programme we had planned. This afternoon I was even able to do my
first tyre test with Michelin. We haven't made any major changes
to the M1 although we have adjusted a few minor technical aspects.
It doesn't feel quite so strange to be riding the M1 anymore although
there are a few things that don't come naturally to me yet. But
everything needs time and I'll adapt to the bike, eventually. The
tests went much better here than in Valencia, where I rode the M1
for the first time. I have to get used to test sessions as long
as this one and hopefully I can keep going like this. I've really
enjoyed it and I'm leaving here a happy man!"
- Ruben
Xaus (Yamaha): "...
Riding a bike which is so different to what I am used to has given
me a few physical problems and I've suffered a few blisters as a
result. Today we concentrated on continuing to get to know the M1
because yesterday we were lapping quickly all day and this is a
difficult track. You can see clearly on the telemetry that I'm giving
it plenty of gas. The bike is shorter and the weight transfer is
very different to the Ducati. With me not being used to the M1 I
worked harder than the bike over the first two days! The relationship
with the team is good although I still have to get used to the way
the Japanese work. Maybe it would have been easier to ride the bike
for the first time in Europe, where I've got more references. Anyway,
we had to do it here and I'm very happy with the way the first test
has gone with Yamaha!"

than a month"s inactivity," declared Capirossi. "At
the end of this first day of testing I"m really satisfied and
convinced that we are going in the right direction with the GP5
... In addition I have to admit that the Bridgestone tyres have
also given me positive indications here at Sepang, especially the
front tyre," he added. "At the end of the day I even set
a great time, but we have to keep our feet firmly on the ground
and continue to work."
