“I couldn’t believe what I was seeing – I sitting
there in third place and then all of that happened in front of me –
they always say you need luck in racing if you are going to win, but
I am still shocked. All of the way through, the bike felt smooth and
I felt good, but really, this has left me speechless

Gregorio Lavilla (Spa) Ducati +4.18s
“I had nowhere to go. My bike was on the outside when
Leon (Haslam) pushed through and across me – we both went straight
on, across the grass and were very lucky not to crash. It was a racing
incident of course, I passed him cleanly, and then he came back at me,
but that is racing and he is my team-mate. I have had good luck to finish
second.”

DNF: “It hasn’t been a good day for me
for the second consecutive event. If anything, Cadwell has been more
disappointing because I was hoping for two solid points-scoring rides
to maintain my lead in the championship. My plan was to concentrate
on each race rather than worrying about the title, but it obviously
didn’t work out for me. While it doesn’t look good if you
take today’s results in isolation, I’m only two points behind
Lavilla and so it’s all down to the last three rounds of the championship.”

REPORT
Triumphant
Win for Northpoint Honda Racing
- 19-year-old Northpoint
Honda rider Cal Crutchlow had an impressive weekend at the 10th round
of the British Supersport Championship. Not only did Crutchlow take
an exceptionally convincing win but he also gained Pole Position and
the fastest lap of the race.
- Crutchlow was on
a mission the entire weekend and was riding exceedingly well around
the technical twisty circuit of Cadwell Park. He was dominant from the
start and was consistently in the top three in every timed session.
His team-mate 20-year-old Craig Jones also secured a strong fourth place
which still sees him in with a good chance of taking the British Supersport
title.
- After qualifying
on Pole, Crutchlow did not get the start in the race that he would have
hoped for and was sat in 5th place by the first corner whilst Jones
had settled into 3rd from 3rd position on the grid. The race was red
flagged however on the first lap due to an incident on the entrance
to the chicane and it was called a complete restart.
- With a 15-minute
delay and a 12-lap restart announced the riders rejoined the grid once
more. Crutchlow gained a better start and slotted into 3rd with Jones
in 4th. It was not long before Crutchlow began to carve his way through
the field taking the lead from Stuart Easton on lap four.
- Jones was locked
in a five-way battle with Camier, Riba, Andrews and Easton and constantly
had to keep the pressure on to hold onto his position. As position swapped
it was Crutchlow that was beginning to break free from the chasing pack
and began to make the race his own.
- Jones made a valiant
effort to pass Camier on the drag to the line but was beaten by 0.01
and was pushed into 4th. Jones still remains second in the Championship
but Crutchlow has now moved himself up to 3rd, 23 points behind his
team mate.
- An ecstatic Crutchlow
said 'Obviously that's my first British Supersport win and it's a great
feeling which I don't think has throughly sunk in just yet. I had to
make sure that I stayed focussed and kept riding smoothly. I had a great
weekend and everything thankfully seemed to work in my favour. I'd like
to thank the whole team and all our sponsors for all their hard work
and support I've finally been rewarded with a win. I'm hoping that I
can continue to get some good results at the remaining rounds.'
- A disappointed
Jones said 'I would have liked to have been a little higher up the table
to day to try and narrow the gap on the Championship lead but I've had
a good consistent finish and that's what I needed. It's certainly going
to be a chase right to the end and it will be whoever can remain consistent
who will eventually win the overall title.'
- Team Manager Gary
Ekerold said 'It's been a fantastic team effort especially from Pete
and Paul who have worked extremely hard throughout the year to achieve
the win that we got today. This is our second season with Cal he certainly
pulled out all the stops this weekend and made a fantastic effort. It
would have been nice for Craig to be higher up but the Championship
is still not lost and with three rounds remaining anything could still
happen.'
- The next round
is at Oulton Park, Cheshire on the 11th September.
RACE
PREVIEW
JOHN REYNOLDS (SUZUKI):
“At Cadwell you are so close to the fans that you can actually
hear them cheering you on. I swear that you can see the whites of their
eyes and as fast as you are riding, they help lift you over the mountain
section of the circuit. This is one venue where the support of the fans
can make a difference to the race - they can really motivate you. I
finished Silverstone last weekend with another podium and probably the
best race bike I have ever ridden. I’m back to fitness and want
to get further up the podium at Cadwell Park. It’s about time
Rizla Suzuki was mixing it at the front and I hope it is this weekend.”
GREGORIO LAVILLA (DUCATI):
“This is the last track of the season that I have not raced before
and it is certainly one of the most difficult. I have been testing but
still feel I need some more laps to find the best lines around the track.
On Saturday and Sunday, I will be working on doing as many laps as possible
and am hopeful for good weather. It depends on how practice goes and
then I can start thinking about the race. It is not the type of track
I like but I’m happy with the way things are going and I’m
hopeful of being competitive”.
JAMES HAYDON (SUZUKI): “Cadwell
Park is a racers circuit and like most racers, I ride on emotion and
enjoyment. I know for sure the fans will give me support this weekend
and that will fire me up. My Rizla Suzuki is pretty close to the way
I want it to perform and we are not far off finding a pace that will
have me threatening at the front every weekend. Cadwell Park is another
opportunity for us to make more progress and as it’s a Bank Holiday,
I think a touch of champagne on Monday would be very fitting.”
LEON HASLAM (DUCATI): “I
was quickest at the test which was great and I’m hopeful for another
good weekend. Both for the Ducati and me, this should be a good circuit
– the track has traditionally suited Ducatis and I think it favours
my style also. It is a very technical track and you have to be very
specific as to where you want to be when cornering. I am hoping this
will be one of the most positive rounds of the season and after last
week at Silverstone my confidence is high”.
SEAN EMMETT (YAMAHA):
“Last weekend I was so eager to make a good strong return and
it didn’t happen. Perhaps I was a little too eager and put a bit
too much pressure on myself! The next four tracks, here, Oulton Park,
Donington and Brands are my favourite four; which is good and I’m
keen to do well at all of them!”
