Fergusson
Reigns Superbike Supreme
The rain hadn’t quite
set in enough to declare SBK race one as ‘wet’ so the 30
plus field went out on their slicks and proceeded to battle with eachother
as well as the very fresh gale that had just blown in.
On the start, Krusty and
Brookes got away two, three just behind Shannon Johnson (Nikon Yamaha).
Fergusson quickly shot past Shannon just after the esses and blasted
ahead to a two second lead where he stayed until the race was eventually
red flagged and ultimately declared.
Meanwhile, Brookes was a
having a Herculean dice with Johnson over second position. However,
with the race being called on the previous lap, Josh had to settle for
third.
By the time the full grid
lined up for the second superbike race, the wet and wild weather had
made itself at home and wasn’t looking like leaving. Again, Adam
pulled away with the top three, including 2003 Champion Giles (Suzuki)
and Daniel Stauffer (Nikon Yamaha).
By the time he had completed
lap one, Krusty had created a huge gap which just got bigger with each
round of the circuit. The wet did not seem to slow him down much as
he ripped it up through the Skyline section of the track with ease and
grace.
“I saw I had a good
lead so I just backed off a little,” Adam commented. “There’s
no need to push it in these conditions. It is slippery but not impossible
and the tyres have been great which is a help.”
“I’m just happy
not to come off when its like this,” he said.
Josh, who was running in
about seventh spot unfortunately DNF’d this race after crashing
near the end of the ten lapper.
“I didn’t have
much grip on the first few laps but started to feel more stable toward
the end. That’s when I pushed it harder but I just lost it after
that,” Brookes said.
Although the rain had eased
a bit by the time race three started, the track was still considerably
wet and woolly. With Josh’s previous off’s during superbike
and supersport (see below), he was not feeling 100% physically or mentally
and found himself on the ground again the last race of the meeting.
“I am not having a
good day,” he had said earlier. Ambulances and medical attention
were quick on the scene and he was taken to hospital where he remains
at the time of press.
In the meantime, Fergusson
ran another excellent race finishing third behind Stauffer and Giles,
and walked away with an overall first for the day. Adam now leads the
championship series by 50 points from Giles.
