2005 DAYTONA 24HR

SunTrust Racing Wins Daytona 24 Hour
Mustang wins Cup Race

  • 2005 WINNER: SunTrust Racing , Pontiac Riley (Max Angelelli, Wayne Taylor, Emmanuel Collard)
  • 2ND: (4) Pontiac Crawford, Howard-Boss (Butch Leitzinger, Elliott Forbes-Robinson, Jimmie Johnson)
  • 3RD: (20) Pontiac Crawford, Howard-Boss (Andy Wallace, Jan Lammers, Tony Stewart)
  • WAYNE TAYLOR (WINNER): "... This is just so incredible ... It's great to win again, for sure. But to be honest, I'm happier for Max and Manu. This is their first Daytona 24 victory and they really deserve it. They are great drivers and the best teammates. There were so many big name drivers that were here from NASCAR, IRL, Formula One, everywhere. And they're superstars in their own right ... Sports car drivers are not really that well know at all. So, to beat them all made it that much better. Not that I don't think they're any quicker than us, because they are all good in their own right. But, I think we had a better combination than they did. They have big purses and we really don't do it for money. We do it for the love of sports car racing"
  • GT CLASS WINNER: (71) Porsche GT3 Cup , Fambacher Racing USA

RACE RESULT, Daytona Grand-Am Cup 200

  • FEB 4, 2005
  • 1 Ian James and Tom Nastasi, Ford Mustang GT, Blackforest Motorsports
NASTASI: " It was awesome. For a car to be able to drive with tires that were three hours old is just unbelievable. It's a race car. This is not something somebody built in their garage. This is a thoroughbred race car. Ford did a phenomenal job. Dan Davis and Primo Goffi really put their minds to this project and it's everything they said it would be. This car was out of the box two days ago. We have done almost nothing to it."

NASCAR CHAMPIONS IN 2005 DAYTONA 24
24 hour Rolex Daytona in 2005 will feature an all star team from Nascar Ford and Roush Racing. The reigning NASCAR champion Kurt Busch will co-drive with 2003 NASCAR champion Matt Kenseth, 2002 NASCAR Busch champion Greg Biffle. The 3 NASCAR champions will be teamed up with the 2003 Daytona 24 winner Scott Maxwell.
BUSCH: "... One of the first things I knew about Jack Roush was his heritage in the 24-hour race at Daytona ... Now to be a member of Roush Racing with Greg (Biffle) and Matt (Kenseth), and to team up with Multimatic and Scott for this event gives me a chance to be a part of history. It's going to be an All-Star effort for this Crown Royal Special Reserve team, but there are some fantastic drivers in the Grand Am Series that we'll be competing against ... We're going to look to Scott to lead us goofy oval guys around those right turns in Daytona, but we're definitely going to have fun with it."
BIFFLE: "... I'm privileged to have the opportunity to compete in the 2005 Rolex 24 At Daytona ... When Dan Davis approached me this summer about the opportunity, I jumped at the chance. I love road racing and while I'm excited, I'm also a little nervous about what to expect. I've never driven this type of car, so I'm anxious to get down to Daytona and do some testing, especially at night"
MAXWELL: "... I'm excited about having a chance to run with Kurt, Matt and Greg ... I've had a lot of great teammates during my career, but having a chance to work with these three guys will be a treat. We'll have some fun, but we're going to Daytona to win."

PAUL NEWMAN: "We all like to push the envelope. I just hope the old bones can motor along Fed Ex and not Delayed Delivery. Fortunately, I'll be with a champion bunch of shoes and good race car ..."

PAPIS (Pontiac Riley): "... I went over there in '96 and nobody knew who I was, and Daytona was a business card for my American racing career. I'm really, really proud to be back there as Daytona Prototype champion and face an opposition of 30-plus cars and it's just going to be great."

PRUETT (Ganassi): "... Daytona is one of those races that Chip Ganassi wants to win. There's so many great races that he as a team owner has won, and this is one that so far has eluded him, but he just started focusing on that last season."

BORCHELLER (Bell Motorsports/FTN Doran Pontiac): "... I'm preparing personally and I've started back up with my training and just excited to be there ... I can't wait. I've also heard that there's a lot of improvements to the Speedway and I'm looking forward to seeing that.

FRANCHITTI BROTHERS
Indycar driver Dario Franchitti and his younger brother Marino will drive together for Howard Motorsports Citgo Racing team. The other team members are Tony Stewart, Jan Lammers and Dan Wheldon.
