PENULTIMATE
RACE: Southern 500 (Nov 14)
-
Jimmy
Johnson is on a roll having won 4 from the last 5 races. He
lies just 18 points behind Busch.
"... Winning the Southern 500 and winning at Martinsville with
what took place with the airplane and Hendrick Motorsports. Going
to Atlanta and doing it. Fighting our way back in this championship.
I just can't believe it."
BEFORE RACE:
2ND, GORDON: "... We're second in the points with only two races
left, so we need to be aggressive. The pressure will keep building
and it will become more intense. This is one track where you'd better
block all that out ... If you don't, this track will bite you in a
second."
3RD, EARNHARDT JR; "... We just have to lead the most laps and
win each race. If we win the Cup, cool. If we don't, I know we'll
still be proud of the season we've had. We're testing at Homestead
this week and we're going to keep doing everything we can to win the
last two. That's all we can do at this point"
2004
NASCAR BUSCH STANDING:
- Martin
Turex's maiden Busch championship title.
TRUEX,
2004 CHAMPION: "... Just to have the opportunity to win my first
championship with this paint scheme (Earnhardt's) is beyond anything
any driver could ever dream ... I would like to thank Teresa, Dale Jr.
and the Wrangler Corporation for making this possible ... (I
have) the greatest car owners in the world ... We've been through so
much - we've learned so much together. I'm glad to get my man Junior
his first owner's trophy. I've got to thank him for everything he's
given me."
- Truex
finish the season with 6 race wins and 7 poles (matching
Jeff Green's 6 wins in 2000)
- Kyle
Busch is Rookie of the Year and finished runner-up.
He set new rookie records for most poles (5), most points (4714), most
laps led (1,089), most wins (5, equalling Greg Biffle 2001), most top
10s (21, equalling Biffle) and most races led (19).

NASCAR TRUCK STANDING:
- 47
year old Bobby Hamilton's maiden Craftsman Truck Series championship
title. He
won 4 races and 12 top 5 finishes.
- First
Truck title for Dodge
- HAMILTON,
2004 CHAMPION: "... We had a good truck, but we just tried to use
our head and stay out of trouble ... The engineers got together and
actually wrote a program that they could just punch a button if Dennis
led a lap, which he did, where I'd have to finish at. When he made a
position or five positions they could punch it and they'd let me know
where everybody was and what we had to do."
HENDRICK
MOTORSPORTS LOSE 10 PEOPLE IN A PLANE CRASH
The victory celebration
for Jimmy Johnson at Martinsville on Sunday (Martinsville 500, Oct 24)
was cancelled due to death of 10 people associated with his team. Hendrick
Motorsport owned by Rick Hendrick is one of the most successful NASCAR
operation with 4 Cup titles, 1 Busch title, 3 Truck titles and over
100 Cup wins. The team's private plane on its way to the race crashed
in the Bull Mountain region of Virginia. Among the dead are the President
of Hendrick Motorsports John Hendrick (Rick Hendrick's brother) and
heir apparent 24 year old Ricky Hendrick IV (Rick Hendrick's son). Others
are Kimberly and Jennifer Hendrick (John Hendrick's twin daughters),
Joe Jackson (DuPont), Jeff Turner (General manager of Hendrick Motorsports),
Randy Dorton, (team's chief engine builder), Scott Lathram (pilot for
Tony Stewart), and pilots Richard Tracy and Elizabeth Morrison.
NASCAR (B FRANCE):
"The thoughts and prayers of the entire NASCAR family go out to
all the families affected by this accident. I am confident that the
NASCAR community will rally to provide comfort and support during this
trying time. As a family oriented sport, we are all feeling a very personal
loss at this time."
M MARTIN: "...
I was hoping never have to hear this again in my life time, I just feel
so bad that it's unreal. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all the
families of those involved in this terrible tragedy."
M KENSETH: "...
I really don't know what to say, this is such a terrible tragedy. It's
not only a tragedy for NASCAR, but it's a personal one for the Hendrick
Family; Rick has been through a lot this year already and I think the
best thing any of us can do right now is just pray for them. We all
knew the people onboard and Randy Dorton has been a very close friend
of mine. We just need to pray for everybody right now for what they're
going through."
K BUSCH: "...
It's such an extremely unfortunate situation. It's certainly something
that illustrates how close-knit the entire racing community really is,
and right now we're all just thinking and praying for all of the families."
INDYCAR (T GEORGE):
"... At moments like this, it is difficult to adequately express
the deep sense of loss so many friends and families are feeling. Times
of reflection for me in the near future will be full of prayer for Rick
Hendrick, his family and his entire organization. We can take comfort,
though, in knowing that the 10 souls that were taken yesterday made
our lives richer for having known them, and we should always hold dear
their memory"
