- 71st Le Mans
on June 14-15, 2003
- Bentley
Speed 8 finished 1 and 2. Last time Bentley won was in 1930; 73 years
ago. Before the marque was sold to Rolls-Royce and most recently to
Volkswagen/Audi group, Bentley was renowned for its racing heritage.
It dominated Le Mans during 1920s, winning 5 between 1923-1930. After
71 years absence Bentley returned to Le Mans in 2001, and finished
on the podium (3rd placing behind 2 AUDIs). Last year it finished
4th. This year the 2 factory Bentleys dominated the race by qualifying
on pole; leading for about 22 hours; and winning. The car driven by
Tom Kristensen (DEN), Guy Smith (UK), and Rinaldo Capello (ITA) also
set a new Le Mans record of completing 377 laps in 24 hours. Kristensen
celebrated in becoming the first driver ever to win 4 consecutive
Le Mans.
