89th Indianapolis 500 - May 29, 2005: KANAAN ON POLE

PATRICK BEATS THE BOYS AT CARB DAY - FINAL PRACTICE

DANICA PATRICK QUICKEST - FINAL PRACTICE - CARB DAY (MAY 26)
"We weren't trying to come out and be fastest, but it's always good to end up at the top of the chart. It's good for our confidence, and good to see that your car can do it in race conditions. I think we're ready for Sunday now ... I know I am the only woman in the race this year, but I am not thinking of myself as a woman driver. I am just another driver out there. I have always been racing against the males and we are all the same when we are sitting behind the wheel.."

BRACK TO FILL IN FOR RICE (MAY 18)
Kenny Brack who was seriously injured at Texas Motor Speedway in 2003 will drive in place of Buddy Rice. BRACK: "It is pretty weird that Buddy filled in for me last year and now I will fill in for him"
RICE TO MISS RACE (MAY 17)
2004 champion who crashed during practice on May 11 has announced his withdrawl. RICE: "I am extremely disappointed that I won't be able to defend my Indy 500 championship. I have spent the last several months thinking about, working toward and planning how I would defend my Indy 500 victory. Physically, I feel fine, but I have to trust the Speedway and IRL medical team because they are looking out for my safety. I am optimistic that I will be cleared for Texas and will be able to get back in the car. I plan to stay here in Indy and help our team in anyway I can"

TONY KANAAN ON POLE (MAY 15)
" It was exciting for everyone and I was really excited the last 45 minutes; I think I have to check my heart ...The entire team helped a lot. We weren't really quick enough on Friday but we didn't panic. This morning the car felt good after a lot of little adjustments; this is a big relief for me ... I pushed too hard too soon but I'm pleased with the run ... We've had good momentum since last year. I was third here my first year, second last year and I feel very good about my chances in two weeks."
DANICA PATRICK LEADS PRACTICE (DAY 5)
"It was a really good day today. We went in the right direction and I'm happy with it. We have a pretty good balance and once we trimmed out we made sure the balance stayed the same ... I have really worked on my line and I'm just trying to get everything perfect. While the car is very good to drive, there are still little things we can do to improve."

2005 QUALIFYING

MAY 26, CARB DAY - FINAL PRACTICE: 1 Danica Patrick , 225.597 mph

  • PATRICK: "We weren't trying to come out and be fastest, but it's always good to end up at the top of the chart. It's good for our confidence, and good to see that your car can do it in race conditions. I think we're ready for Sunday now ... As I told many reporters, I would try just as hard if you guys weren't even here ... I was told that if I did well this kind of thing would happen. I worked so hard for the ability to drive for good teams and good sponsors that are always with you and to elevate this series."
  • 2 Tony Kanaan
"There were a lot of people trying to look good by posting big speeds with tows, but we just did our thing. The Team 7-Eleven car was second fastest and I had a tow. But I also got a good feel for the car. But who cares who was first or second on Carb Day? We'll not remember that on Sunday. All that matters is that we feel good about the car, and I feel very good about the Team 7-Eleven car.
  • 3 Dan Wheldon
  • 4 Sam Hornish Jr.
  • 5 Tomas Scheckter
  • 6 Scott Sharp 7 Tomas Enge
  • 8 Adrian Fernandez 9 Vitor Meira
  • 10 Sebastien Bourdais
"We were quite hopeful that the CENTRIX car would be as good as it was when we left two weeks ago but it was not. The track has changed and we were following more traffic that we did when we practiced here so that could contribute to the difference. I can't say we are really happy with the balance. It's not perfect but it will be different again on Sunday. We will do our best to bring a good result for Team CENTRIX on Sunday."

MAY 21, QUALIFYING DAY 3: 1 Kenny Brack 227.598 mph *** FASTEST QUAL SPEED ***

  • BRACK: "It's a great feeling to be back, especially to be back with Rahal Letterman Racing. They are a great team and great friends. I never did think about [qualifying fastest], but to be the fastest qualifier you have to put the right engine in there, and Honda did a great job, obviously, with that. It's all about momentum now. Before [engines were reduced from 3.5-liters to 3.0-liter displacement], if you got out of the throttle, you could get back in it and pick it up again. Now, if you get out of the throttle, it takes you two laps to get back up to speed again. So, it will be critical to have a good car for the race next week."

MAY 18, DAY 9 PRACTICE: 1 Dan Wheldon 2 Tony Kanaan 3 Adrian Fernandez

MAY 15, POLE DAY, DAY 8:

  • SHARP, 3RD: "I'm ecstatic ... We had run some speeds during practice in the low 226's (mph). For us to come back out in qualifying trim this morning and post our best time of the month with a solid mid to high 227 and back it up with a four-lap average of 227, that is peaking at the right time"
  • FRANCHITTI, 6TH: "When I heard about the revised qualifying format for Indy, this is what I envisioned, it being nearly six o'clock and me being on my third run. But our gamble paid off. Not a lot, but we did move up one spot on the grid. Really, that was all the ArcaEx car had. I went flat out. The run before we made one change and made it a little bit worse, but I'm glad we managed to make that last run. This was pretty stressful. You hang it out on the edge during qualifying and to do that for two and a half miles, I'm ready for bed tonight."
  • WHELDON: "We started off the week very, very quick and we've just gotten slower and slower. We just can't put our finger on it. It's frustrating because you want to compete for the pole here and we just weren't close. The Klein Tools/Jim Beam car was comfortable; we just couldn't find the speed we needed."
  • MAY 14: *POLE DAY MOVED TO SUNDAY BECAUSE OF RAIN*
  • MAY 13, FAST FRIDAY: 1 Tomas Scheckter 2 Tony Kanaan 3 Danica Patrick
  • MAY 12, DAY 5 PRACTICE: 1 Danica Patrick 2 Tony Kanaan 3 Kosuke Matsuura
  • MAY 11, DAY 4 PRACTICE: 1 Tony Kanaan 2 Danica Patrick 3 Scott Dixon
  • MAY 10, DAY 3 PRACTICE: 1 Dan Wheldon 2 Scott Sharp 3 Helio Castroneves
  • MAY 9, DAY 2 ROP: 1 Danica Patrick 2 Tomas Enge 3 Sebastien Bourdais
  • MAY 8, DAY 1 ROP: 1 Danica Patrick 2 Ryan Briscoe 3 Patrick Carpentier

DANICA PATRICK, QUICKEST, DAY 5: "It was a really good day today. We went in the right direction and I'm happy with it. We have a pretty good balance and once we trimmed out we made sure the balance stayed the same ... I have really worked on my line and I'm just trying to get everything perfect. While the car is very good to drive, there are still little things we can do to improve."
