TRACY WINS CHAMPIONSHIP

Paul Tracy won his first Champcar championship. He led Junqueira by 29 points before the penultimate race in Australia (Oct 26). Junquiera failed to finish so Tracy clinched the title.

TRACY'S EARLY WINNING STREAK of 3 wins in a row was broken by Sebastien Bourdais' win at Brands Hatch followed by another win at German 500. Since then Tracy has bounced back and won 4 more races.

ROAD AMERICA REINSTATED
Mario Andretti helped to resolve the dispute and the race will be held as originally planned - Aug 17th.

NIGHT RACE
Champ Car racing's first ever night race was held at Milwaukee - race won by Jourdain. Cleveland will be the 2nd night race.

ALEX ZENARDI RETURNED to Eurospeedway for German 500. He acted as the Grand Marshall and also drove a specially modified car with hand controls to complete the 13 laps from his 2001 race.

MAJOR CHANGES IN 2003 - designed to reduce cost and promote racing

NEW CAR PACKAGE:

  • identical Ford Cosworth engine with Bridgestone tyres
  • power down from about 900 BHP last year to 750 BHP, but greater torque
  • chassis combination of Lola or Reynard
  • traction control removed
  • harder compound tyres
  • no tyre warmers
  • lower cost:
    e.g Ford engine lease costs about $1.2M vs $4.5M last year
    total cost per car $4-5M vs $12M last year

  • Championship contenders as well as the reigning and former champions have moved on to other series

PRE-SEASON TESTING: BOURDAIS QUICKEST  (results)
CART rookie Sebastien Bourdais set the quickest time during the 3 day pre-season test at Sebring.
Bourdais is last year's International Formula 3000 champion. He joined Newman-Haas Racing which won the CART championship in 2002 with Cristiano Da Matta. Bourdais' team-mate Bruno Junqueira was 2nd quickest followed by Team Rahal's Michel Jourdain Jr.
