2005 AUSSIE RACING CHAMPIONSHIP

R7, OCT 23, 2005, INDY GOLDCOAST

RACE REPORT:

  • Paul Kemal wrapped up Round 7 of the WPS Aussie Racing Cars Series by winning Race 3 on the Gold Coast street circuit today, and his VIP Petfoods team-mate Travis Edwards made it a team 1-2 in an incident packed race.
  • The shape of the race changed when mid-way through an accident between Aussiefast’s Simon Arthur and Sime Tyres’ Colin Sieders brought out the safety car.
  • Unbeknown to Arthur, Sieders had moved up the inside heading into the left turn onto the straight. As Arthur moved over to protect his line the two collided and slid along the inside wall, leaving them both out of the race and Arthur’s car missing the right front suspension.
  • “There is very little peripheral vision in the older bodied cars,” Arthur said.
  • “The first I knew of the incident was when we collided.”
  • After leading early Arthur, Sieders and Kemal swapped the lead a number of times in the opening laps, until the incident left Kemal the lead and eventually the win over Edwards.
  • “It is great to get my personal record of six wins in a row, hopefully I can make it seven,” Kemal said.
  • “I was unaware of the incident behind. One minute they were in my mirrors, the next they were gone.”
  • Edwards was not far off the pair when they crashed.
  • “I kind of thought they might come together,” Edwards said.
  • “It was a great result today for VIP Petfoods to get a 1-2 finish, I am just glad to be part of it,” he said.
  • The fight for third place was just as exciting as Speedy Wheels’ William Yarwood, Loctite’s Ian Spurle, and Westpoint’s Tim Monte battled in the closing stages of the race.
  • Spurle was having his best race in his short three-round history until he slid through a chicane and received a one-minute penalty putting him out of the results.
  • Yarwood and Monte went toe-to-toe in what was a battle for series points.
  • Yarwood won the battle, but Monte remains on top of the points with Yarwood close behind in second.
  • The final round of the 2005 WPS Aussie Racing Cars Series is at Tasmania’s Symmons Plains Raceway on November 11-12.
