REVIEW:
- KEMAL WINS
ROUND – MONTE LEADS SERIES
- Paul
Kemal had broken Tim Monte’s winning streak by taking victory
in Round 6 of the 2005 Aussie Racing Cars Series at Sandown Raceway
today.
- While
VIP Petfood’s Kemal made it three victories from three starts,
Westpoint’s Monte has taken the series lead after Brad Ward failed
to finish Race 3 and Sheridan Phillips struggled for speed all weekend.
- “It
has finally come together,” Kemal said.
- “I
had a great battle with Sieders until he received a penalty.
- “I
was rapped to break Monte’s winning streak and to finally get
my first round win for the season.”
- Colin
Sieders took the lead and battled with Kemal until he was given a drive
through penalty for jumping the start and then further penalised for
his part in Kyle Clews spinning into the wall later in the race.
- Although
Sieders disagreed with the steward’s decision, he accepted it.
- “I
thought I got a pretty good, clean, start and maybe it made them think
I jumped the start because of how it compared to the others.”
- “In
the other incident I though that Clews had already started to spin,
but, yes, I did hit him so I have to accept the penalty.”
- Yokohama’s
James Ward finished second after applying pressure to Kemal in the closing
stages of race 3 which also gave him second for the meeting.
- “It
was good to have a trouble-free meeting this weekend. I had a fast car
today and managed to avoid a few incidents and the result was good.”
- Tim
Monte’s third place in Race 3 not only gave him third on the day
but also the series lead.
- “I
am happy to take the series lead. I just had to wait for the other guys
to have a bad run so that I could pick up a few places, he said.”
- Yokohama’s
Brad Ward, who has lead the series points since Round 1 had a disastrous
meeting after getting caught up in an accident in Race 1 and then being
turned around and puncturing his oil cooler in Race 3. He has now dropped
to sixth in the series points.
- “This
has been a disaster of a meeting for me. It is a shame that two incidents
that were out of my control have cost me so many points. I can only
look forward to the next meeting from here,” Ward said.
- Mark Duckworth
took his first Masters Cup win after finishing sixth outright in Race
3. Simon Arthur was second and Mark Taylor third in his best result
this season.

YOKOHAMA REPORT
- FORTUNES
CHANGE FOR YOKOHAMA BOYS
- Yokohama’s
James Ward has turned his fortunes around by finishing second in Round
6 of the 2005 Aussie Racing Cars Series at Sandown Raceway today. Brad,
however failed to finish Race 3 and has lost the series lead after being
turned around and puncturing an oil cooler.
- After qualifying
fifth James had a consistent run through the three races finishing fourth,
fifth and second in each race respectively. In Race 3 James pressured
eventual winner Paul Kemal for the latter part.
- “I closed
up on Kemal towards the end there but I just ran out of laps to have
a real go at passing him,” James said.
- “It is great
to have a top result this weekend, especially after the run I had at
Oran Park.”
- For Brad, things
looked bad when he was caught up in a first lap incident in Race 1 which
was caused by oil being left on the circuit. He eventually finished
29th in that race.
- After working his
way up to 14th in Race 2 things turned bad when he was turned around
in the first lap of Race 3.
- “I am not
sure who hit me but it broke my oil cooler. I tried to continue but
eventually I lost too much oil and had to pull in.”
- “It is a
shame that two incidents that were out of my control have cost me so
many points. I can only look forward to the next meeting from here,”
Brad said.
- The DNF and 31st
overall cost Brad the series lead and he I now in sixth position, 21
point off the lead.
- James is now fourth
in the series points and only fifteen points off the lead.
PENNZOIL REPORT
- PHILLIPS
CLOSES IN ON SERIES LEAD AT SANDOWN
- Going into
Round 6 of the 2005 WPS Aussie Racing Cars Series at Sandown Raceway
Pennzoil’s Sheridan Phillips was in second place, 13 points behind
series leader Brad Ward. Coming out of the round Sheridan remains second,
but only two points behind new series leader Tim Monte.
- Sheridan
salvaged a good result from Round 6, even though qualifying 20th and
finishing a lowly 31st in Race 1.
- “I
really thought I was in trouble after struggling for speed in qualifying
and then suffering from a terrible result in Race 1,” Sheridan
said.
- To the team’s
credit, changes were made to the car and Sheridan kept a positive attitude
turning on an impressive performance to storm through to ninth in the
wet Race 2 and then tenth in the final race on Sunday.
- “We
got the car going a lot better for Race 2 and the wet track helped also
as it really gave me the opportunity to pass the guys who are not as
confident in those conditions.”
- Sheridan
finished twelfth for the meeting, and although being overtaken in the
series points by Monte he is only two points behind.
- “I
am so close to the lead now that I can smell it,” he said.
- “Anything
can happen from here and if I keep working hard it might just fall my
way.”
- Things could
not have got much worse for Alastair McGregor after one of his best
qualifying sessions this year – twelfth.
- “I
was caught up in the first lap accident after oil was left on the circuit.
This basically put me behind the eight ball for the rest of the meeting,”
Alastair said.
- “The
wet second race was a tough one with so much spray from cars in front
I just could not get the car to work as it should have.”
- “To
top it off I damaged the bonnet panel in the final race and had to pit
to remove it before continuing on in the race.
- “I
will just put this weekend down to a bad experience and move on, focusing
on the remaining meetings,” He said.
- The Pennzoil pair
now look towards the Gold Coast street race at the end of October.
