2006 V8 SUPERCAR: ORAN PARK, NSW  

• After finishing 2nd in Race 1 and 2 then winning the final race, Craig Lowndes took over the championship lead from Garth Tander.
  LOWNDES: “It’s great for us and great for the team but we’ve got a long way to go ... We’ve got to get through this weekend yet then on to the enduros of Sandown and Bathurst where anything can happen. We just have to keep knuckling down and scoring points.”

• RACE 1 WINNER: TODD KELLY: “It was a fantastic race. It would have been nice to have a slightly faster car – Skaifey had an awesome car before he had dramas. We’ve got some work to do before tomorrow.
• “There has been glimpses of great speed through the year but this is the first time we’ve been able to turn it into a result.
• “We’ve had the odd drama this year, it’s good to get a result on the board. I didn’t know when it was going to end, I thought taking the new car to Queensland, there couldn’t be much else on the car that could potentially go wrong, and then I went and snapped the gear lever off. It’s great to get through the first race of a round with a win, especially with the reverse grid format.
• “When I saw Mark slow down, the first thing I did was look to the side to see if Safety Car boards were out. It didn’t look right, I was blasting up the straight and he was coasting through the kink, and then when he pulled over I knew something wasn’t right.
• “The battle with Craig was a good one, especially when he got up alongside me on to the straight. I had been waiting a long while for that, he looked like he was not as quick over the top but then he would fire in on me under brakes, and I was waiting and waiting and hoping he wasn’t going to be close enough to do it. But he got right up there and there was nothing in it. I didn’t know if I was going to be able to hang on to the lead but my car put its power down slightly better and edged ahead.”
