ELLIOTT
RUNAWAY WINNER AT FORMULA FORD OPENING ROUND IN ADELAIDE
Fastlane
Racing’s Daniel Elliott was a runaway winner at the opening
round of the 2005 Ford Racing Australian Formula Ford Championship
held in Adelaide as part of the Clipsal 500 program. The 20-year-old
West Australian set the fastest qualifying time and went on
to dominate the three-race schedule.
RACE
1 (Friday, March 18, 1.40 pm):
Elliott led off the line ahead of Sonic Motorsports David Sieders
and CAMS Rising Star Brett Hobson. 2004 Avon Tyres Rookie of
the Year Dean Fiore, also driving for Sonic Motorsports, was
in fourth position, breathing down the necks of the leading
trio.
The battle
for the lead between Elliott, Hobson and Sieders continued for
most of the race until Hobson passed into the hairpin at the
end of Brabham Straight to lead over the line on lap six. Elliott
then regained the lead on the same corner on the next lap.
A two-car
incident resulted in the race being red-flagged and the results
called at the conclusion of lap 7. Elliott was declared the
winner ahead of Hobson with Sieders in third and Fiore fourth.
On his way
to third place David Sieders set the fastest lap – and
lap record - on lap six with a time of 1:29.6461.
RACE
2 (Saturday, March 19, 9.05 am):
Elliott set a new lap record (1:29.0039) on the way to his second
victory of the weekend in race two, eventually finishing more
than three seconds ahead of his nearest rival. He was pushed
once again by Brett Hobson and Dean Fiore who finished second
and third respectively.
Borland
Racing Development’s Shane Price, after finishing in fifth
place in race one moved up one spot to take fourth place in
race two.
Laps seven
and eight were run under the control of the safety car while
a crashed car was removed from the track but as soon as the
pace car left the circuit the battle to the line continued.
The pace
went up a notch in race two when David Sieder’s race one
lap record (1:29.6461) was broken by Hobson (1:29.6019), Fiore
(1:29.5879) and fourth-placed Shane Price (1:29.4677).
RACE
3 (Sunday, March 20, 9.05 am):
Daniel Elliott led race three from start to finish, ahead of
a tight battle for second place between Shane Price and Brett
Hobson. On his way to his third victory of the weekend Elliott
again lowered the lap record to 1:28.8959 on lap eight.
Once again,
a coming together between two cars further down the field resulted
in the safety car leading the way for two laps while the debris
was cleared. When racing recommenced Elliott pulled away from
the pack, finishing nearly three seconds ahead of Price and
Hobson.

2005
FORMULA FORD SEASON OPENER
Australia’s
premier open-wheeler class roars into action for the opening round
of the 2005 Ford Racing Australian Formula Ford Championship at
the Clipsal 500 in Adelaide over the weekend of March 17-20. A
30-car Formula Ford grid will ensure the much-anticipated wheel-to-wheel
action during three races over the weekend as drivers endeavour
to make their mark.
2004 Avon
Rookie of the Year, Western Australian Dean Fiore, has joined
champion team Sonic Motorsport, aiming for the 2005 title. His
2005 teammate is David Sieders from NSW, who finished 2004 in
10th place. Both will be competing in Van Diemen RF04 chassis.
Borland Racing
also has a new lineup for the 2005 season. Anthony Preston will
be contesting his first full championship season in the Bosch
Batteries car, bringing international Formula Ford experience
to the championship, having raced for two years in the UK Formula
Ford championship. His teammates will be Victorian Shane Price
and CAMS Rising Star driver, Brett Hobson.
Byron Bay
(NSW) student Andrew Thompson will be fronting the Adelaide grid
in a Spectrum 010. Andrew, 17, was on the podium at Bathurst in
2004 when he took out race 2 on the daunting mountain circuit.
Adding an
international flavour to the Adelaide grid will be Kiwis Jason
Liefting and Andy Knight. Jason, 24, made his Formula Ford debut
in the NZ ’97-’98 season after many years of karting
where he won numerous national titles.
Making the trip to Adelaide from his Tuncurry (NSW) home will
be Joel Spychala, 2004 NSW State Champion. Joel, 22, took six
round wins, 11 wins from 12 races and set fastest laps in all
races in securing the championship. Joel will be running a Van
Diemen RF04/05 in 2005.
There’ll
be a couple of links to the V8 Supercars at the Adelaide round.
Jack Perkins,
the 18-year-old son of five-times Bathurst winner and former Formula
Ford champion, Larry, will be making his national Formula Ford
race debut in Adelaide. Jack’s motorsport career started
in 1997 in karting and he is now looking to Formula Ford to gain
sufficient experience to take him through the motorsport ranks.
Lee Holdsworth,
who competed in the 2004 V8 Development Series will be making
his Formula Ford debut in Adelaide, running a Spectrum 010.
Local drivers
competing in their ‘home’ event include Barry Pinder
(Van Diemen RF01); Nick Percat (Mygale SJ97); Drew Milne (Van
Diemen Rf91); Samantha Reid (Van Diemen RF03); Graham Knuckey
(Van Diemen RF01); Asher Johnston (Mygale SJ97); David Reid (Swift
SC94); and Aidan Zanotto (Van Diemen RF01).
The V8 Supercar
Championship features many Formula Ford graduates including Marcos
Ambrose, Greg Ritter, Mark Larkham, Russell Ingall, Craig Lowndes,
Steven Richards, Jason Bright, David Besnard and Garth Tander.
The 2005 Formula
Ford season promises, once again, to provide some of the most
exciting and nail-bitingly close action seen on Australian racetracks.
