PETERHANSEL / ROMA / TCHAGUINE WINS

Mitsubishi's 4th consecutive win

  • 6 times Paris Dakar moto winner Stephane Peterhansel wins his first ever car title in Paris Dakar. He becomes the second competitor after Hubert Auriol to win in both 2 wheels and 4 wheels. Defending champion and team-mate Hiroshi Matsuoka finished 2nd. This is Mitsubishi's 4th consecutive win.
PETERHANSEL: "... "It's been extremely tough, but I couldn't be happier ... I had to wait four years for my first win with the bike. For the first win with the car, it took me six ... This is a completely different feeling .."
    WINNER MOTO: 1991, 92, 93, 95, 97, 98
    WINNER CARS: 2004
  • Jean-Louis Schlesser driving Schlesser Ford finished 3rd.
  • BMW X5 of Alphand finished 4th.
  • McRae's debut: Colin McRae won 2 stages in his Paris Dakar debut. He was as high as 3rd overall until he suffered gearbox trouble on Stage 9. He finished 20th overall.
McRae: "... I would have been disappointed to have gone home without a win .... I'd love to do it again and I have no reason to doubt I can win the Dakar with Nissan .... Everyone involved with the team knows we were unlucky with the technical problems which cost us a huge amount of time last weekend ...But it's only Nissan's second year in the Dakar and it's still a learning experience for us all ... What's more important is that we've got to the end of the rally and I have to thank all of the guys who kept my car going. Without them, I wouldn't have made it .."
  • Nani Roma became the first Spanish rider to win paris-Dakar.
".... When I was little, my mother gave me a book on the history of the Dakar, from its creation to 1985. Every night I would read it. I would have never imagined riding a bike one day, compete on a Dakar and win it .. It's amazing being a part of its history.."
  • Meoni retires: 2002 & 2001 Moto champion Fabrizio Meoni finished 6th overall and won stage 15 in his last Paris-Dakar "... This special victory pleases me because it'll remain as one of my last memories of the Dakar. I'm convinced it's time to stop .."
  • Vladimir Tchaguine won his 3rd consecutive win in Trucks division.
  • Stages 10 & 11 were cancelled for security reasons. There are fears that bandits may take competitors as hostages for ransom.
MATSUOKA (2003 champion): ".... I don't think it was a good decision to cancel the stages ...
I wanted to continue all the way ... to Bobo ... Instead we have to drive a liaison section of 927 km. That is much too long .... 1 hour is a long time behind Stephane (Peterhansel). I think we must keep second place for now .."

I am looking forward to showing what I can do in a different type of rallying ..... The car will be radically different to what I am used to, as it is Nissan's Double Cab 4x4, but this is all about taking on a new challenge ..... My co-driver will be Tina Thorner, who has done this event many times, and I'll be banking on her experience and that of my team-mate Ari Vatanen to help me through my first Paris-Dakar ..."
