A guy at work had the same problem with his 08 Navara, and apparently the wiring to the rear abs sensors, runs along the front of the rear axle, unprotected, so any rock stone or bit of wood can hit the wiring, damaging it. This causes the ABS to malfunction, and because the intelligent 4WD system relies on the ABS sensors to operate, the 4WD is disabled as well.
The wiring needs to be replaced/repaired, and then protected from mechanical damage.
