| WE HAVE AN X-TRAIL WHICH HAS DEVELOPED A RATHER ANNOYING FAULT. |
"Dear all,
We have an X-Trail which has developed a rather annoying fault. On 2 occasions in the last week, the car has been driven around 10 miles, and then left for 30 minutes or so. When we came to restart it, the car would not start. We tapped the starter motor with a hammer, and it started. We then replaced the starter motor. However today the same fault occurred. We had a full diagnostic check done by Nissan, and no fault was found. They suggested it maybe the ignition switch or an earth cable to the gearbox?
There is no clicking noise when you turn the key, and there is full battery power. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, John"

========== REPLY ========== Hi John, something to try but not sure if it is your problem. On an old car that I used to have this problem occurred, it was the Neutral safety (selector) switch that was located on the automatic shifting stick. The switch is designed to stop the car from starting in any other gear than Park or Reverse. When they get worn they can play up. The first thing to try is to run the shifter up and down as you try to start the car, it may kick over if you are lucky. Hope this helps.
