HOW URGENT WOULD IT BE TO REPAIR? WHAT COULD I DO TO FIX THE PROBLEM?

"Hi everyone. I have a 1998 VT Executive Commodore and over the last few days, I've noticed what sounds like a light metallic sound coming from the front left wheel. This happens occasionally, not constant and seems evident when I go over a bump. I checked everything underneath, removed the wheel etc and all seems fine, except there is a tear in the front shockie boot, about the size of a 50 cent piece. Question: Would this be causing the problem and how urgent would it be to repair? What could I do to fix the problem?

Thank you for your help."

Hi Jim, Try looking at the swaybar link, the little rubber rings (bushes) become distorted and flattened, or they split and fall out. This allows the washer to rattle around, especially on bumps. The swaybar link is a steel rod that goes from the swaybar, just behind the strut down to the strut. It may not feel loose when jacked up as the load will be on the little rubber bushes. Reach around there with the wheel turned full lock and you should be able to move the washers and rubber rings quite easily. If these are loose, they will gradually get noisier and noisier. Not really a huge urgency to replace, but should be done ASAP as a matter of roadworthiness.

Hope this info helps. Terry.
