"Auto transmission problems developed at around 84000 kms. Was horrified that something like this could happen to a Toyota.
Reverse gear clunck, starting from 2nd gear, harsh shifting from 1-2 gears and 2-3 gears, and a weird buzzing sound coming from the transmission bay. After countless hours of research and speaking with Toyota, I decided to buy a new ECU which was very very costly, $1475 AUD to rectify the problem. If I were to bring it to Toyota itself, they quoted $3000 - $7000 to trouble shoot and fix. Crazy I thought seeing the solution requires the ECU to be replaced with the improved one regardless whether the auto gear box needs replacement.
Acting on advice from numerous Rav4 owners around the world, especially from the US, I installed the ECU myself and I’m happy to inform that the problems went away instantly. The trick is to stop using the vehicle immediately once problems start to prevent any further mechanical damage to the transmission. Catch it early and this solution is feasible.
Open the glove box (squeeze two sides of the box), remove screws to detach the glove box, the ECU is a silver rectangle box with 5 sockets attached to it. Remove all the screws attached to it and replace with new ECU. Sounds easy but be careful, using a good screw driver as the screws are quite poor in quality. Plug and play.
If this doesn't solve the problem, there could already be mechanical problems to your transmission, then it'll be no choice but to send to a transmission mechanic or getting your arms twisted by a Toyota 'transmission specialist'. Right..."
