TO ALL INTERESTED ANOTHER ZD30 IN A 2003 PATROL HAS DIED

"To all interested another ZD30 in a 2003 Patrol has died. Vehicle was serviced regular with oil/filter changes every 5000k's, although when I first bought it, Nissan dealer only recommended every 10000k's. Vehicle has only done 113000 k's and sounds from first diagnosis similar problems to earlier models.

My advice to all with these lemons, if out of warranty trade immediately and stay clear of Patrol with this dud motor. If Nissan Australia do not acknowledge problem and repair will be researching and compiling a brief for a class action. Remember to tell everybody you know to stay away from the ZD30 Patrol. Best action is preventative action, hit them in the hip pocket. I know 100 + people who know the same. I will and have started passing this on to all I know to turn people away from the Nissan Patrol. It sounds just as bad as the Holden Camira dud sold in the eighties.

Have been told $15000 + to replace new motor as not worth rebuilding. Will be garaged for a while until can afford to replace."

Peter,

This motor had a problem with its piston rings. Since Nissan started using a different type of ring, there have been no further problems. Nissan dealers sell a complete brand new motor with the new type of piston ring at reasonable prices. Shop around between dealers for a price.

Good Luck, Mark

Hi Peter,

Our 2003 ZD 30 Patrol has also just died. We were just coming back from a camping trip with our two young children when the engine failed. It had 128,000Ks on the clock. We were very fortunate to have mobile reception when it went.

The cheapest option out for us would be $10K with the same engine (80k on the clock) and try to sell it. As we have invested quite a bit of money into the vehicle with added extras (thought the 2003 model would be free from these issues) we have sourced a 4.2L intercooled turbo engine that we will have fitted. We can not risk the same engine blowing again. This option will cost us around $15k.

Just wondering how you went with Nissan. We are yet to talk to them as we have no energy left to fight with them after having to re mortgage the house to get it fixed and trying to juggle not having a car. Could you please let me know if you had any luck and if so who is best to contact.

Thanks

Peter the same thing happened to me and I took Nissan to Court and won. Engine was out of warranty but the Magistrate ruled that it was more probable that not that the initial problem commenced when it was in warranty but went undetected until the cylinder head was pulled off under my instruction 10 months after it was out of warranty. Please contact me if you want further info.

Good Luck Tony Howe

I can add my Patrol to your list (2000 with 215ks). Went into the local dealer because of lack of power and increase thirst last Monday. They adjusted the waste gate valve. Less than 300ks later on my way home and a large puff of white smoke from the exhaust was followed by a very rough sounding three cylinders.

I've already spent $5000 in the last 6 months on clutch/flywheel/injectors/glow plugs. You could say I'm not a happy chappy.

Let me know how you go.

Cheers

Having just paid $16k for a total rebuild including new turbo, injector pump etc for my 2000 Patrol I can understand your frustration.

I'm about to start the process of hounding Nissan and local dealer for some assistance with the repair bill. Seems only fair after leaving the Nissan Dealer after a service to drive 100ks home to not get home with a driveable vehicle.

Keep me posted.

It seems I have been on another planet, I bought a GU ZD30 about 2 years ago and yes you guessed it my motor just let go. Not that it is ever a good thing but the timing could not have been worse. My family were in the process of moving to Wodonga from Brisbane and only made it half way when it let go with out any warning. The most disappointing part is that not only do I now not have a car but I am reluctant to spend 10k on rebuild if it is just going to do it again and selling it is not an option as who wants a car with no motor.

Any info on what options I have and if or how you get Nissan to come to the party would be appreciated. (Should have stayed with a Landcruiser).

Thank you
Wayne.

Forget trying to get anything out of Nissan. This motor had a problem with its piston rings. Since Nissan started using a different type of ring, there have been no further problems. Nissan dealers sell a complete brand new motor with the new type of piston ring at reasonable prices. Usually cheaper than a rebuild. Shop around between dealers for a price.

Good Luck,
Mark.
