TOYOTA RAV4 2003: TRANSMISSION SLIPPING *COMPLAINT* |
||
ISSUE: |
My Rav4 (2003-automatic cruiser) gearbox has just started slipping from yesterday. It started all of a sudden. It ran 197000 km so far (most of it Highway km).I have taken it to my local automatic transmission specialist and have been advised to do a transmission service, but reading all these info in this forum, I believe it is not going to be an easy fix. I will keep you posting. If it is a legacy of a faulty design, we all should raise awareness against it and should make Toyota to shoulder the responsibility. |

NISSAN NAVARA 2008: RE: FRONT ROTORS AND PADS **** WITHIN 12 MONTHS 30,000 KLM *REPLY* |

ISSUE: |
If you got Nissan to replace them under warranty you must have performed a miracle. When I spoke to Nissan Australia's complaints department they just fobbed me off and said brakes and rotors are not warranty problem as they are wearable parts. I have been buying Navara's from Nissan since 2002 and this is my fourth one and after their treatment from their complaints department this is the last Nissan I will ever buy. |

POSTED BY: ROD JENDEN - AUCKLAND, NEW ZEALAND 8 JUL 2009 ========== REPLY ========== I am getting my front rotors and pads replaced today - rotors under warranty. Done 45000 km when Nissan finally approved the claim.Then when I rang to book it in, the dealership re-negged on the job saying that I had to pay for it. I went irate. Ended up speaking with the Nation Warranty Dept. Manager at Nissan Australia - he sorted it out for me. Turned out that Nissan Australia had approved the claim but the dealership is ****. It'll be my last time ever going there. The rotors and Nissan pads are ****. We have 3 of them here at work and my mates ones got replaced at 30000. I have never heard of rotors going at 30000 on any car. Try 80- 150K... Good luck POSTED BY: RICHARD ARNOTT - MELBOURNE, VIC - AUS 16 JUL 2009 ========== REPLY ========== This is very common on these models. They have small discs for the size of the car & soft pad & disc material to give a good bite feel in pedal. I have replaced hundreds of discs on these. Put DBA discs on it & the life is more than doubled. Regards, Jay. POSTED BY: JAY - PENRITH, NSW - AUS 17 JUL 2009 ========== REPLY ========== I had the same problem with mine as I am always carrying a heavy load, went through 2 sets of genuine pads/rotors pretty quick. Took the car to a local mechanic a couple of months ago, he fitted RDA rotors and RDA's new RDX Extreme pads, I couldn't be happier! Great pedal feel, very good bite, and I can't notice any wear at all! Even better, they were much cheaper than genuine! POSTED BY: GREG - MELBOURNE, VIC - AUS 25 AUG 2009 |

Has anyone used E10 fuel long enough to experience problems directly attributable to the ethanol blend. Mine runs perfectly on E10, but there are persistent rumours of injectors ‘gumming’ up and/or valves ‘burning’ out faster. |

========== REPLY ========== If you own an SY, you shouldn't be using any less than 95 RON petrol, and I wouldn't use the Ethanol fuel to achieve this. I would recommend the 95 or 98 RON fuels available, better for fuel economy. If it is an SX, they recommend 91 and so you should be able to you Ethanol. There is nothing wrong with Ethanol, but it does burn faster than standard Unleaded and for this reason I use BP Ultimate or similar. POSTED BY: JASON - COOMERA, QLD - AUS 8 SEP 2009 |

MITSUBISHI LANCER VR-X 2005: DID NOT GET THE CAR I PAID FOR *COMPLAINT* |
||
ISSUE: |
I bought a Mitsubishi Lancer VR-X the other day. I was checking the user manual and discovered it only has the 2.0L 92kw engine in it as opposed to the purchaser’s contract stating it has a 2.4L. I did get the engine code and searched it through the net to check and I am right. |

KIA CARNIVAL 2002: RE: YES TO CLASS ACTION KIA MOTORS *REPLY* |
||
ISSUE: |
I just had my 2002 Kia Carnival towed to a mechanic with oil all through the cooling system and the engine running hot; the usual Kia Carnival story. I have been told it will cost thousands to repair by the mechanic. I rang the Kia dealership in Essendon and was told it's out of warranty and old (it only has 116K on the clock, I previously had a Toyota with 200K on the clock and a Fiat with 140K and they both went like a dream). I told them it's nothing to do with the age of the vehicle, it's a known problem and the guy didn't disagree. |

========== ORIGINAL POSTING ========== "KIA CARNIVAL 2002: RE: YES TO CLASS ACTION KIA MOTORS - We have a good will claim currently with KIA Motors Australia, for our fourth engine. We were told the standard **** in 2002, yes there were problems with the early models 1999 to 2001, but KIA has re-engineered the 2002 engine, and we guarantee it's problem free. Within 27,000km it was dying, second engine around 46,000km and third around 75,000km. I guess you could say fortunately (ironic) our first three were covered by warranty. This is not some new issue, KIA knows about the problems, and why the engines fail repeatedly. The 1974 trade act is in ****, being that KIA Motors Australia kept on selling a motor vehicle to the Australian market in an unmerchantable state, being that 65% to 75% of the total volume of vehicles sold, had some form of engine failure, and some vehicles had multiple failures. I see lots of people stating the ACCC is of little or no help, in upholding the 1974 Trade Act. Question 1: Why isn't our government (ACCC) helping us? We are Australians Taxpayers, and we are families (we are a family of six) who can ill afford $8500.00 repair bills, for an engine that was so poorly designed, it can't run for more than 75,000km (being generous here). Question 2: Has anyone or does anyone know how to start a class action against both Kia Motors Australia, and the ACCC for dereliction of duty to Australian families/consumers? Question 3: How much is KIA Carnival worth without an engine, or even with an engine that blows more frequently than live volcanoes? Question 4: Why don't we all get together on this, cause nothing is going to happen if we don't? There are at least 5500, 1999 to 2002 KIA Carnival owners or ex owners out there who had engine problems, we don't need them all, I would think around 200 would do it to start. If you are in leave a message like: Yes to Class Action Kia Motors." ========== REPLY ========== "Hi Sara, I too am searching for information on the faults associated with the Ford BA. Ours has a list as long as your arm. The most recent is Stalling. My wife and kids are the main people in this car. I picked them up after it broke down again. My daughter was in tears, worried that they would have an accident. The car is uncontrollable when the engine dies. No Steering and only one go at the brakes (the handbrake has a slight effect). This has been going on for 2 months. The throttle body has been cleaned and every thing checked. Ford advised that the battery be replaced because of low amperage, $245 + $110 for fitting! This has been done. Ford have also told us that there is nothing that can be done because no faults have appeared on the diagnostic test. So we are left with a Ford that will run intermittently and is dangerous. I have a full list of what is wrong with it at ****. We are very unhappy with this car. Never will we buy a Ford again. We have owned 3 Falcons and all have had intermittent faults and BAD Brakes. Just to let you know this BA has only got 72,000 kms on it. I will look into the IAC Valve and see if that might fix it. Thank you again for your offerings." ========== REPLY ========== A simple way to check is too look at the oil. If it is clean and there is no fine metal on diff drain plug it is probably not the bearings. Bearing failure usually causes a whining noise at no load acceleration and deceleration. Clunking can be in the spider gears and it is possible it can travel down the drive shaft from gearbox or clutch problems. At the low distance the vehicle has done I would be expecting Nissan to assist in paying for repairs. POSTED Y: RUSSELL DAWES - YEALERING, WA - AUS 1 SEP 2009 |

LANDROVER FREELANDER 1998: RE: ABS MODULATOR FAILURE (ARE YOUR ABS/TC/HDC LIGHTS ON?) *REPLY* |
||
ISSUE: |
I have the same problem with a '98 Freelander diesel. The dealer said $5000 but the brake computer (modulator) does not always fix the problem. My mate from the US said that over there you can buy a device that will monitor and cancel error codes. I searched down the most promising supplier but they said they can cancel codes for VW but only read them (not cancel) for Landrover. Each time I get a service and the codes are cancelled, it last for 3-4 weeks before they re-appear. |

========== REPLY ========== "LANDROVER FREELANDER 1998: RE: ABS MODULATOR FAILURE (ARE YOUR ABS/TC/HDC LIGHTS ON?) - I have the same problem with my '98 Freelander. The first time the lights came on was a couple of years ago. Land Rover fixed the problem when it was being serviced and it was fine for a while. However a few months ago the HDC/ABS/TC lights came back on and, with the exception of a 2 or 3 week reprieve after a recent service, the lights appear to be back for good. I'd love to know if there is an inexpensive way to fix the problem." POSTED BY: JOHN ILINCIC - SYDNEY, NSW, AUS 24 NOV 2007 ========== ORIGINAL POSTING ========== "LANDROVER DISCOVERY 2 1999: ABS MODULATOR FAILURE (ARE YOUR ABS/TC/HDC LIGHTS ON?) - Landrover Discovery 2 owners, Recently I have joined you in the ABS modulator issue. I was slowing for a light when the 3 little lights (ABS/TC/HDC) appeared on the dash. Once stopped, I re-started the engine and the lights were no longer there. Approximately a week later they re-appeared. I took the car to a LR service centre and was advised to replace the modulator. ($3000 to $4000) NB: They did however say that although this seems to be a Very common problem in this model, it was not one that would stop me from driving the car. They said the brakes are still usable however the ABS will not work and the brakes may not feel right. After researching this issue throughout the internet, it has come to my attention that thousands of LR owners are faced with this exact issue. NB: LR service centres will try to say that there could be an array of issues causing the lights to appear on the dash. Although this may be true, all the issues suggested relate back to a faulty ABS modulator. It is a simple fact that the ABS modulators in Landrover’s are faulty. Please email me if you are having the same issue. I believe Landrover should be helping us (repairing faulty modulators) and would like to take this to consumer affairs with a large group of LRD2 owners to show how big an issue this is. Personally I don't feel safe in a car that is showing ABS warning lights. (NB: In the owner’s manual, the response to this warning light is to stop the car immediately and call your service centre - that's all well and good, but will they help!) Hope to hear from you! Alister " POSTED BY: ALISTER WRIGHT - MELBOURNE, VIC - AUS 11 AUG 2007 ========== REPLY ========== I have a 1999 Landrover Discovery, at approx. 60,000 km my 3 lights started coming on and Landrover would not fix the problem either. Just gave me the same story. Rover Parts in Victoria told me a new shuttle valve switch would fix the problem. They took my money; the new switch didn’t make any difference. When I rang them back the girl said they would ring me back, never did. I wish I never bought the car. I have done only 110,000km and repaired both auto lines the radiator, water pump, injector harnness, fuel pressure regulator, one original air suspension bag and 20,000km later another new bag. I hope you have better luck. POSTED BY: MARK DALLINGER - COOLANGATTA, QLD - AUS 13 AUG 2007 ========== REPLY ========== I own a 2002 Discovery and to my dismay I have discovered the three amigos problem as well TC ABS and down hill lights. I took car to dealer and was told ABS module was bad. After researching on computer we are totally being taken advantage of by Landrover. This is so common that a recall is definitely in order. This can happen at any time during the life of our cars. I saw where it happened during our normal 4 year warranty during 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. When it happens during warranty nobody cares so we will have to fight harder for any satisfaction .They should be ashamed that we have to spend a lot of money to put our families into a car which has a braking system with a high rate of failure. Thanks Shaun POSTED BY: SHAUN FULLER - YONKERS, NY USA 17 AUG 2007 ========== REPLY ========== I've had the "3 amigos" problem on my 2003 LR Discovery II with 45,000 miles for about 2 months now. Took it to the dealer last week and they suggested a new ABS modulator for 3200. This included 500 for a new switch of some sort for the right front wheel. They showed me the diagnosis which pointed to some shuttle valves in the ABS switch. I've done some research and in 2006 LR provided a shuttle valve repair kit SWO500030. I'm still trying to find out if this was to address the ABS modulator problem. I have to believe that the problem is NOT life threatening if LR hasn't issued a recall. I also have to believe that if someone has an accident and the modulator is shown to be the culprit there will be a rapid recall. Research on the internet shows a lot of people like us in the same circumstances with lack of a concise resolution to the problem. I'll be happy to help in any way I can. I'm still looking for a resolution and my try a few inexpensive things on my own 1st. Keep you posted. Mark POSTED BY: MARK FERDINAND - FORT MYERS, FLORIDA USA 22 AUG 2007 ========== REPLY ========== I had this problem for quite some time; the cause on my Disco was that the brake pads were changed without changing the disks. The disks are designed to be changed when the pads are changed, they are not expensive. If you do not change the disks the pads ride up on the ridges on the disks for a long time and confuses the braking system, this may get better as the pads wear in to match the disks but it will generally still happen intermittently. Change your disks and pads and I am sure you will see the end of it. POSTED BY: JOHN JACKMAN - PERTH, WA - AUS 23 AUG 2007 ========== REPLY ========== I had these lights come on. It was caused by a blown stop light fuse (blown by a dodgy hire trailer). New fuse fixed it. POSTED BY: ANDREW - MELBOURNE, VIC - AUS 31 AUG 2007 ========== REPLY ========== Alistair, I have the same problem with my 1999 Series II TD5. It is however very intermittent. The suggestion by one person on the discussion site that it is associated with new brake pads is not so in my case, as it was many months between fitting of new pads and the problem appearing. Regards, POSTED BY: NICK - BRISBANE, QLD - AUS 15 SEP 2007 ========== REPLY ========== I too have a 2001 Disco II. I have owned it for 2 years "The Three Amigos" have been an intermittent problem until recently. Now they stay on errantly. I would gladly join this cause to bring this problem back to where it came from ... Land Rover. I agree after reading dozens of similarly frustrated LR owners complaints its time Land Rover took care of our problems because they are from Their faulty braking system. POSTED BY: GLEN WOODS - ALTA LOMA, CA, USA 7 OCT 2007 ========== REPLY ========== I too have had the ABS failure problem with my Landrover Discovery II. I have been told by the dealer that the only solution is to replace the shuttle valve unit at a cost of nearly $4000. The problem seems to be intermittent and unpredictable. I recently towed a caravan with the car and in 300 Kms the problem did not occur, yet it occurred immediately the car was driven without the van. I am reluctant to spend the money to repair the fault as I suspect that it may be caused by a sensor rather than the modulator. The experience of the writer who found the problem still there after replacing the unit deepens my suspicion. I agree that a scan of the internet confirms that this is a world wide problem which Landrover has been **** in the hope that we will all pay up and shut up. I obviously made a mistake in ignoring the long standing complaints about the build quality of Landrover. I am very disappointed that the company refuses to acknowledge that they sold **** vehicles. I was initially very pleased with my car but I now understand why all my associates said I was crazy not to buy a Toyota. POSTED BY: ROBERT ADAMS - SYDNEY, NSW - AUS 17 OCT 2007 |

========== ORIGINAL POSTING ========== "MAZDA 3 MAXX SPORT 2009: PAINT ON BUMPER BARS - I bought a new Mazda 2 months ago. Picked up the car late afternoon on a rainy day. A week later I gave the car a wash and find out that the colors of the bumper bars doesn't match to the color of the car. I know that plastic and metal give a different texture on the paint finish where most bumper bars are slightly darker than the car body, but on my car the colour itself is different. I went to the dealer and they said that it is normal because of the material difference (plastics and metal). To me it looks that may be the car has had damages during transportation so that why the colors are different. So I took the car to a panel beater and he ordered 300g of the paint code (which can be found on the chassis of the car). Two plastics sample was being painted and came out exactly the same colour as my car color. So I took it back to the dealer where I had one of Mazda representative to have a look. All that he can say to me is that the color has been matched to the body color of the car that’s why it came up identical as the car body color. I showed him the paint code that I had and he still doesn't want to accept. What's amazing is how bad is quality control on these cars, any panel shop can do a better job than the car manufacturer. I'm taking the matter to court." POSTED BY: JEAN-MEE GULLIFER - LYNDHURST, VIC - AUS 19 AUG 2009 ========== REPLY ========== I'm not a paint expert, but do work with new cars every day. If you honestly take a look around at many different brands of new cars, there usually is a noticeable difference in colour between the plastics & the metal.You have not been fibbed to. Have a good look at a few different brands of new cars from various manufacturers & you will find this to be quite common. Regards, Jay. POSTED BY: JAY - PENRITH, NSW - AUS 26 AUG 2009 ========== REPLY ========== Hi Save your time and money it is normal on most cars with plastic bumpers in solid and metallic that they have a different look. It seems more evident in metalics and pearls than solids though give Mazda Australia a call. You never know they might just paint the bars if you calmly tell them how unhappy you are. I had a Pathfinder and the flares were the same looked different spoke to Nissan (not the dealer), they paid to have them painted at my mates panel shop. Remember a cool head goes a long way. There is an article in the New York post about the problem with auto transmission in Rav4 from 2002 onwards. By the way, we had the same problem, the solenoids were changed, the fluid changed and the ECM reprogrammed and nothing worked, after spending almost 1600. The car was driveable but not perfect as we suspect the transmission was damaged and we part exchanged it. Good riddance to a lemon. |

It ran perfectly with no trouble for 6 days… After reading your post I’m wondering if the "Goodwill gesture" from Kia would apply in this case. POSTED BY: DALE MORRIS - WOODVALE, WA - AUS 8 NOV 2007 ========== REPLY ========== There are hundreds of unhappy Carnival owners who have serviced their vehicles to the book and ask KIA to help with some financial relief for what is after all a design fault, only to be given the run around and then told to ****. Your vehicle has missed a critical service item which has led to major engine damage. Most manufacturers would not help in this situation and I'm afraid KIA is not known for goodwill at all. POSTED BY: GAZZA - MELB, VIC - AUS 14 AUG 2009 ========== REPLY ========== Hi Lucy, Could you send me an email ASAP, you can probably reply to this one, as I’d love to get in touch with you - you may be in a position to give me some valuable information. Cheers, Joe POSTED BY: JOE - ADELAIDE, SA - AUS 14 AUG 2009 ========== REPLY ========== I just had my 2002 Kia Carnival towed to a mechanic with oil all through the cooling system and the engine running hot; the usual Kia Carnival story. He told me at my expense I could have the car taken there, the problem diagnosed and I would have to supply the service history (not complete and I am now the fourth owner) before all the paperwork could be sent to Kia for a "goodwill" claim. I told him I was not throwing more good money after bad, that I already know what the problem is and that I would be complaining and considering my options. I have since made an online complaint to the ACCC. I expect this will be filed with all the other complaints about Kia but it is important to do this I believe. I have been looking around the internet and found some useful information. Freelanders have the same engine and also problems with head gaskets. The ACCC advised that under the law, individuals or groups of individuals who entered into a contract (bought a car) have to take legal action, as the ACCC has not entered into a contract with the company because they did not buy a car. I have looked into taking a small claims application to VCAT in Victoria, it does not cost much ($36.20) and the paperwork looks easy to put together. I would file an application under the Fair Trading Act 1999 and choose which parts of the Act I think Kia breached. I have been quoted between $1,000 to $2,000 for a trade in so I don't have much to lose as I see it. I came here from overseas last year and had no idea these cars are of such poor quality. We bought it thinking it would last our family of five many years. These cars should not be available for sale. If I made an application to VCAT, I could include witnesses. Would you be willing to testify to your experience with your car to lend weight to my claim? I could do the same for you. POSTED BY: AMANDA THOMPSON - MELBOURNE, VIC - AUS 30 AUG 2009 ========== REPLY ========== Yes am with you all the way my Carnival 2002 died this weekend. Only bought it about 11 months ago. Overheating problems for the last 7 months and it finally blew up this weekend, dread to think how much to fix. Will find out tomorrow when the garages reopen. Its been a piece of **** since I bought. It had the aircon regassed twice and it lasts about 4 weeks then dies, fridgies can’t find a leak though. It rattles like crazy needing a new engine pulley, the rear shocks are had it, it guzzles gas like you wouldn’t believe, it leaks oil. I simply can’t afford these amount of repairs and shouldn’t have to after buying a $10,000 car 11 months ago. Kia really need to step up and stop crippling young lower income families, as if life’s not hard enough. Cassie POSTED BY: CASSIE - GOLD COAST, QLD - AUS 1 SEP 2009 |

NISSAN NAVARA D40 2007: STRANGE STRONG DIFF OIL SMELL IN CAB *FEEDBACK WANTED* |
||
ISSUE: |
We have a Nissan Navara D40 2007 and recently took it into our dealership to have the problem seen to. They replaced the Timing Belt Gasket Cover and told us that this would fix the problem. Hubby is now on his way down to Rocky and the smell is worse then ever. |

========== REPLY ========== This has been previously covered and thought to be breather hoses ending too close to vents at the fire wall. Check for this first and reposition. I occasionally get the smell myself but have not checked the breathers. POSTED BY: JOHN MCLACHLAN - BUNBURY, WA - AUS 1 SEP 2009 ========== REPLY ========== Hi I have the same model ute and had exactly the same smell. It took Nissan 6 months to finally fix. They said it was a oil leak and then said it was the vents that release air from the cab (they are behind the back seats). In the end my mechanic called them and told them to check the boot case and a zip tie later and the smell has been gone for about 5 months now. Hope this helps, Amanda POSTED BY: AMANDA WEEKS - ROSEWOOD, QLD - AUS 5 SEP 2009 ========== REPLY ========== My D40 leaked oil from the gear box rear seal onto the hot exhaust giving the burning oil smell, check that out. NISSAN NAVARA STX D40 2006: RE: 2ND CLUTCH IN 37000KM *REPLY* |

Following up on my previous email Nissan will not cover me for the second clutch as they consider it is not a "mechanical defect”. So now I am up for $3000 to keep my $45000 lemon on the road. Thank you Nissan! |

========== ORIGINAL POSTING ========== "NISSAN NAVARA STX D40 2006: 2ND CLUTCH IN 37000KM - My Navara is just 3 years old, I bought it in May 07 with 4100kms on the clock. It is 4 litre petrol. After a few months I noticed that the engine timing seemed to be amiss, the engine would stall regularly when accelerating from a standing start. I took it to my Nissan dealer who advised me that from their records they could tell that the clutch had been replaced prior to me buying the car from the previous owner. When the flywheel was fitted back onto the crankshaft apparently it was not correctly aligned. There is a pickup on the flywheel that the EFI system senses for fuel timing, as this was not in the correct position the engine was not running as it should. Initially Nissan tried to say that I would have to pay for the work to put the flywheel into it correct position but after some robust discussion they accepted that it was their mechanic who fitted the flywheel incorrectly and was not my fault. Several months later I returned the Navara to Nissan for a leaking gearbox seal this was attended to with no hassles and covered by warranty. I did the Gibb River Road in July/August last year with no problems pulling 750kg of camper trailer around. I bought a boat last year and started noticing that when I was retrieving it from the boat ramp there was a pungent odour of burning clutch plate and the tell tale noise of a slipping clutch, the boat is barely 1.5 tonne so the Navara should be well able to handle it even going up a gradual slope. The Navara is back at Nissan now for a new clutch and a leaking seal on the rear diff. They are already telling me that the new clutch will not be covered by warranty but we will wait and see, this will be the second clutch in 37000kms. I have looked around at other forums for Nissan and it appears as though the D40 clutches have been a real problem worldwide. I would like to know if anyone else has had any problems with a Nissan D40 clutch. Thanks Gary" POSTED BY: GARY BROWNE - PERTH, WA - AUS 3 AUG 2009 ========== REPLY ========== Gary I have had no stop issues with my Navara and Nissan mainly to do with my clutch. I've just added a posting in response to another complaint but happy to discuss it further with you. I'm looking for some support to take it to Nissan to recall faulty clutches - or at least accept there is a real issue and help out their totally dissatisfied customers. Cheers Tyson POSTED BY: TYSON SMALLEY - TOWNSVILLE, QLD - AUS 5 AUG 2009 ========== REPLY ========== My 2008{August} Navara STXD40 did its first clutch at 9000km and now at 22000km the clutch has packed up again. In both instances I was reversing an empty trailer about 5 metres up a driveway. Nissan replaced the first one free of charge. Tomorrow it is going back to Nissan I will inform you of the result. Hi Ian, a few things that should be checked in regards to stalling when selecting drive and not moving would be the ISC (idle speed controller) motor which carbons up in the throttle body. Another thing to check is the distributor and TPS (throttle position sensor) connectors. Hope this helps. |

MITSUBISHI MAGNA VR X 2002: RE: HARSH CHANGE BETWEEN 2ND AND 3RD GEAR *REPLY* |
||
ISSUE: |
Hey James, in regards to the auto trans shift problems it could be a few different things. The speed sensors on the top of the transmission fail occasionally giving drive-ability problems and there may be an ECU software update available or there may be coolant leaking onto your ECU from your heater core causing corrosion to the circuit board. |

========== ORIGINAL POSTING ========== "MITSUBISHI MAGNA VR X 2002: HARSH CHANGE BETWEEN 2ND AND 3RD GEAR - I have recently had my auto transmission reconditioned, and ever since then the change between 2nd and 3rd is anything but smooth. My usual mechanic hooked up the car to their computer and insists that there's a ratio problem. I sent the car back to the mechanic who performed the reconditioning, who then went over the transmission to verify their work: all fine, but the clunk into 3rd still occurs. Having read some forums I reset my ECU by disconnecting the battery and performing a recommended sequence of shifts. This was brilliant for about 3 weeks (smooth as silk shifts), then it somehow re-learned its bad ways. Does anyone know of a reliable way to stop this reoccurring? Since there's no problem after resetting the ECU, I am leaning toward it being an ECU thing. That is, unless the ECU is learning bad habits due to something else being amiss. Sorry for cross-posting, but I haven't managed to find a solution to this problem yet." POSTED BY: JAMES COOPER - ARMIDALE, NSW - AUS 19 AUG 2009 ========== REPLY ========== Hey I have a Magna VRX 2001 and I'm having just about the same problem. From 2nd to 3rd with average acceleration the rev's jump up about 500 rpm then a harsh/hard/unclean change into 3rd. I've changed the oil and reset the computer but this still happens. I plan to take it to a transmission shop but if you happen to find the problem could you please post it. If I find the problem I'll be sure to post it. Thanks Rob for your post I'll look into that and ask when I take it to the shop Thanks all. POSTED BY: JOSEPH - BRISBANE, QLD - AUS 9 SEP 2009 |

Hi Jennifer, firstly how often do you have your vehicle serviced? Problem with the smoke is most likely valve stem seals run dry from lack of oil due to extended service intervals or just really rubbish oil. The oil residue in the air intake is fairly normal may get excessive if the PCV blocks up. Hope this helps. |

========== ORIGINAL POSTING ========== "MITSUBISHI PAJERO VRX 2007: PAJERO VRX ENGINE CONTINUALLY FAULTS TO LIMP MODE. - I purchased a new Pajero VRX in 2007. At about 10,000km I began to experience problems with the engine faulting. The engine light comes on, the motor defaults to limp mode and the ASC light comes on the dash. The engine continues to run powering the brakes, power steering etc, with sufficient power to get off the road and stop. Once the vehicle is turned off and restarted it will reset and we are on the road again. The problem occurs more regularly when the vehicle is under load. The vehicle has been to Mitsubishi on a number of occasions (about 20) but the vehicle now has 35,000km and still experiencing same problems. We are awaiting further advice and parts from Mitsubishi in my latest efforts to have the problem rectified. As you can imagine the issue is frustrating and has posed some dangers when the vehicle faults on a freeway or whilst overtaking. I am curious if others have experienced similar issues."
