TOYOTA HILUX 0: CONFUSED OWNER *FEEDBACK WANTED* |
||
ISSUE: |
Have had my Hilux ute for a couple of years now & have had a mystery intermittent problem with starting. Typically when I turn ignition to starting position the engine turns over but will not fire, even after extended cranking. But if I release the key & start again it will start? Does any-one else know of a similar situation? My ute has the 4litre V6 engine. Thanks, down in Tassie. |

========== REPLY ========== Sounds like a fuel pump problem. Turn the key so the ignition is on but do not try to crank the motor for 20seconds, this will allow time for the fuel system to build up pressure, then crank the motor. Let us know if this works. POSTED BY: GREG - NOWRA, NSW - AUS 1 AUG 2009 ========== REPLY ========== Hi Ross I too also have a 4.0V6 Hilux. I do not have any problem with the starting of the engine. Just a wild guess it sounds like your immobilizer not sending the required signal to the ECU to allow the engine to fire. Mate please post the findings of your problem when you get it sorted out as it would be good to know just in case the same thing happens to mine and others down the track. Just another tip, sit in the car, lock it using the key pad, wait 30 seconds, then unlock it using your key pad insert the key into the ignition and see if the immobilizer light stops flashing. Best of luck mate it can’t be much surely as you said when you give it a second turn it goes, please keep us informed of your outcome. POSTED BY: WAYNE - BONNELLS BAY, NSW - AUS 1 AUG 2009 ========== REPLY ========== Hi Ross as it’s been a while since your last post (Aug 1st) regarding your starting problem I am interested to know what the problem was and how it was resolved. KIA CARNIVAL LS 2002: RE: KIA CARNIVAL 2002: KIA MOTORS PAID FOR MY REPAIRS IN FULL! *REPLY* |
||
ISSUE: |
Hi Dale, I'm so glad I've come across this website. We have a 2002 Carnival LS, we bought through private sale in 2007. It had 40,000kms then in it's new engine (apparently Kia had already replaced a faulty engine with previous owner before). We have maintained it privately since then. We are very happy to keep it for the next 10 years until it overheated 2 weeks ago and mechanic said it's a blown gasket and will cost minimum $4000 to repair. We are still driving it 'cause we just can't afford the repair right now nor another car. It's just a very tough times nowadays for us, husband put to casual, me to part time, child care, mortgages, bills… We are just so battered with what happened to our Carnival. |

FORD TERRITORY TS 2WD 2006: WON'T PROCEED *COMPLAINT* |
||
ISSUE: |
My Territory (2006 TS 2WD) has developed an intermittent problem where occasionally on first start it will not accelerate (motor going but very little action in drive or reverse) and the dash lights go berserk. At first I thought this was the transmission because I didn’t notice the dash lights. I parked up the car had it towed to the dealer who couldn’t fault it. They checked the computer and the transmission. |

========== REPLY ========== A friend has also had this happen with his Territory, it mainly happens when he's rushing a 3 point turn. He believes it's something to do with engaging D or R while the vehicle is still in motion in the opposite direction. It appears to confuse the traction control, the electronic stability program, or the transmission electronics. He has approached Ford with the problem, they have no fix for it, other than to turn the car off, wait 10 seconds and re-start. POSTED BY: DAVE - SYDNEY, NSW - AUS 7 AUG 2009 ========== REPLY ========== Its sounds great except when you pull out into the traffic and you have nothing no acceleration. TOYOTA LANDCRUISER 70 SERIES V8 TURBO 2007: BE WARNED BEFORE BUYING ONE OF THESE VEHICLES, FIND OUT HOW MUCH OIL THEY BURN *ADVICE* |
||
ISSUE: |
As a trades person I require a large vehicle to pull my trailer and tools. I traded up my old tray back cruiser for a new Turbo V8 diesel tray back. After the first 1,000k service and up to the first 10,000k service this vehicle had used 4litres of engine oil. My first concern was that Toyota Service department didn’t put enough oil into the motor and I dismissed that to human error, and that it may use a little more in the run in period. |

========== REPLY ========== You are spot on. I have a 2009 GXL workmate and it started using anything from 2 litres to about 2.8litres between services and now has used in excess of 5 litres since its last service from 50,000 to 61000 km. I have just dropped it off at Toyota and told them I don’t want it back until they fix the problem. I have already had the gaskets replaced it changed nothing. I have a neighbour across the road who is having the same problem as well as several others in my area. Toyota acknowledges the problem but won’t fix it. Maybe it’s time we all contacted current affair seeing how Toyota's reputation isn't all that good at the moment. Cheers POSTED BY: OWEN JAMES - NARRANDERA, NSW - AUS 18 MAR 2010 |

FORD FALCON FUTURA 1995: CATE *FEEDBACK WANTED* |
||
ISSUE: |
I have had Major problems with my 95 Futura ever since I bought it. Purchased in 2005, the first to go was the step up motor. This took 3 weeks just to diagnose and I was sent by the dealership to 2 different mechanics. Then came the gas converter, computer module and numerous other things. Next the water pump, then the drive belt came off and took with it my crank angle sensor and harmonic balance. Power steering has rack and pump have both been replaced in the last few months and now I have just had a new block put in and spent another $2500. |

========== REPLY ========== Wow! I think your mechanic should have told you that these cars aren’t great. But having said that, it is an old car and things do go wrong. The backfiring will be caused by the LPG, Why it needed a new block? Who knows? I would say you have no way of proving the mechanic is doing anything wrong. It’s an old car. Oh and I’m a mechanic and I just bought one of these for a loan car... a grand total of 500 dollars. That’s all they are worth. Sell it and move on. POSTED BY: STEVE - AUS 1 AUG 2009 ========== REPLY ========== Hi Cate. Have your spark plugs, plug leads and coil pack checked. Especially the coil pack, remove it and check thoroughly for cracks. Personally only ever seen one stepper motor give problems. If you suspect the stepper motor, have an LPG tech reset it 120 steps or thereabouts and disconnect its wiring connector temporarily for diagnosis purposes. If the 120 steps part confuses the technician, then they don't know what they are doing. All of the items you have mentioned are consumables that do have a limited lifespan. Your hip pocket is the best guide for how long you keep a car. Don't fall into the trap of "having" to keep it to recoup your money spent, seen it many times, it will never happen. Dav. ========== REPLY ========== Just had this problem with my MY08 D40 Marco. Blinkers worked but the indicators on the dash didn’t. Headlights on low beam with switch off and couldn't shift them to high even with the switch on. Being a bit of a computer geek and knowing the glitches that often happen with PCs running windows... I applied the Microsoft solution. Disconnected power by removing the neg lead from the battery for approx 2 minutes. This resets the ECU and hey presto all is good again. I'm guessing that this is a system protection default and if you know the fix it's not a problem. I scanned my ECU and no fault codes were showing but that doesn't mean that the dash chip didn't have a hiccup from an alternator surge or the like. Thinking all was ok I turned them on again to check and again could not turn them off, no matter how much I played with the control. So I was going to pull the battery to kill them, I turned the engine off and the lights went off. So I left it at that. The next day everything worked and has ever since (27,000km now). ========== ORIGINAL POSTING ========== "NISSAN PATHFINDER 2008: POOR FUEL ECONOMY AND NO RESULTS FROM NISSAN - Issue 1. Plagued with fuel consumptions issues. Lowest fuel consumption 12.8 l/100klms to highest towing a box trailer with 300kgs in it 17.7 l/100klms, astronomical! Three other vehicles around town are running at 9.4 l/100klms. I have had this vehicle to the dealer 4 times to rectify the fuel economy, without success. Data taken by Nissan Australia for analysis waiting on results. But from what I've read here I could run out of breath. Also motor runs rough and is noticed more in park with revs increased to 1000-1200 RPM. The motor shakes and in turn the whole car... still under diagnosis. I have approached Nissan requesting Berrima Diesel (very reputable team) to look at it under warranty, surprise, surprise, they refused. What are Nissan hiding? Issue 2. The driver’s automated seat has decided to recline when it wants while driving! This has happened no less than 10 times, once operating forward pressing my wife against the steering wheel. Control switches, setting switches changed 4 times as well as the wire loom, and two days ago it happens again. So onto the tilt tray it went express to the dealer to get the power isolated until a replacement switch arrives from Spain. I have pressed Nissan regarding that this is a Major Safety Issue, but can’t get past the panel of 6 complaint consultants they have established in Head Office. If any other owners are encountering similar problems please let me know. Where do we go from here? Regards Steve" POSTED BY: STEVE COULTER - THIRLMERE, NSW - AUS 15 JUL 2009 |

KIA CARNIVAL LS 2002: OVERHEATED/BLOWN GASKET - LOW TRANSMISSION - $4000 TO REPAIR! *COMPLAINT* |

We bought this 2002 Kia Carnival in 2007 through private sale. We maintained it well privately. We'll be happy to keep it for at least 10 years, I mean, that's our financial plan. Anyway, that's why we are doing the best we can to take care of our Kia... Last week, it overheated and blown the gasket said the mechanic and will cost us minimum 4000... like I said, we cannot afford another car for the next 7 years. We cannot afford a $4k repair to the engine, my husband was put to casual, I was put to part-time... just can't afford this trouble nowadays. So please Dale, let me have copies of the invoices and all your legal documents, whatever that can help us. Thank you very much! God Bless You. Lanie |

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! POSTED BY: JEN - MALLABULA, NSW - AUS 23 MAY 2009 ========== REPLY ========== Hi Dale, I have a 2001 Kia Carnival 93,000km, I have had it for 3 years. All of a sudden one day it overheated made funny noises and then stopped. We have been told it will cost us $6,000 - $10,000 to replace the motor. My car is sitting in my driveway and cannot be driven. We still have over $4,000 left to pay on this car and need a larger car as we have 4 children. I have contacted Kia and they are saying because it's out of warranty ("36months or 100,000km whichever comes first") they can't help us. They are saying they are not aware of any problems with this models engine, although she wouldn't answer the question until I had repeated myself 5 times and then asked her to stop avoiding the question. She would not give me their address; she would only give me their postal address, maybe a bit worried we were going to stage a protest, not a bad idea though. Looking at this website just goes to show that there is most definitely a problem with the engines in these models and Kia has to be held responsible for it! I have contacted Dept of Fair Trading and the ACCC, the ACCC recommended I read the Warranties and Refunds Info under their Publication section on their website. I would really be interested in information on your class action. Regards, Judi POSTED BY: JUDITH MOLLOY - LISMORE, NSW - AUS 31 JULY 2009 ========== REPLY ========== Writing on behalf on my Daughter who has a 2002 Kia Carnival. After reading in the motoring section of the Herald Sun re the problems with the Kia I had her car checked and found oil in the water. I contacted Kia and they said it was a known problem and they would fix it and her only expense being oils, coolant etc. Took it to the dealer in Warrnambool and said we had to put in a claim before proceeding but the fellow in charge confirmed the costs as told to me by the person in customer service. The claim came back and Kia had said they would pay half of the short motor cost our share being $4500.We went ahead and paid to have it fixed. I have all the letters from Neil Fraser if you are interested. This paragraph is in the initial reply: ‘With some of the engines used in the Kia Carnival between 1999 and March 2002 a quality control issue arose in the assembly of the cylinder sleeves resulting in some engines having inconsistent sleeve heights which compromised the cylinder head gasket integrity. The concern with the engine resulted in a head gasket failure which occurred early in the vehicles life.’ The Warrnambool service guy said they had about 140 Kias with this problem. We are quite happy to be part of some action that may recoup our money. Hope this may be of some assistance All the Best Daryl Petch POSTED BY: DARYL PETCH - PORTLAND, VIC - AUS 8 AUG 2009 ========== REPLY ========== Hi it sounds like I have an identical problem with my 2002 Kia Carnival. TOYOTA PRADO DIESEL 2008: RE: ENGINE RATTLES WHEN COLD AND UNDER SLIGHT LOAD *REPLY* |
||
ISSUE: |
Hi, we have a 2008 diesel Prado which has similar symptoms. At the last service 40,000km, the dealer advised that this was an acknowledged problem with the vehicle. They reprogrammed the ECU and asked if the vehicle could be run for 1000 kms to see if the problem reappeared. The rattle, on cold start, is still there and has not reduced after 600 km of operation since the service. |

========== ORIGINAL POSTING ========== "TOYOTA PRADO 2007: ENGINE RATTLES WHEN COLD AND UNDER SLIGHT LOAD - When cold and going up a slight grade there is a definite engine rattle. In days gone by it would be described as rocker noise however this is a fuel injected engine! After the engine warms up this noise disappears. Is it anything to worry about? The dealer said he could not hear it (surprise, surprise!) and wonder if this has been experienced by any other Prado diesel owner? Engine has done 20,000 km. Thanks." POSTED BY: GEOFF LE COUTEUR - LOWER PLENTY, VIC - AUS 8 SEP 2008 ========== REPLY ========== Hi Geoff I have just bought a used 2007 3L TD Prado (1 week ago) and have experienced the same problem. I bought it privately and never drove it cold before I bought it. I was shocked by the noise the first time I heard it (outside temp was 8C) but it disappeared after a kilometer or so. It seems the higher the ambient temperature the less noticeable the noise is as it hasn't been as bad since. I think it is common as I have read other threads on this issue although nothing to conclusively say it's normal. If you have any new info on this problem I would be grateful for your response. Regards, Eddie Seychell POSTED BY: EDDIE SEYCHELL - WESTMEADOWS, VIC - AUS 27 OCT 2008 ========== REPLY ========== Contact your local dealer as dealers reporting this problem to Toyota Tech Help will receive advice on how to repair this issue. It involves replacing 4 injectors and reprogramming the ECU. This is not a recall but can be claimed by the dealer under warranty as not all Prado's or Hilux's do this (same engine). Early fix for this was to diagnose which injector was the problem and replace it. It is not just a Toyota problem as it affects a few common rail systems. POSTED BY: DAVE SCHULTZ - BERRI, SA - AUS 10 NOV 2008 ========== REPLY ========== Hi, I have a 08/2008 D4D Prado at 23000k it developed a half miss in one cylinder with a cold morning knock (only light though). The miss and knock disappeared after driving off down the road but the miss returned as I returned to an idle (at an intersection etc). It shook the whole vehicle on idle. The dealer wanted it over night (1 1/2 week wait) and came to the conclusion there Was a problem. So approval from head office was given to fix the problem. I was told it will be up to 2 months wait for the parts! After 3 weeks I had enough so after giving the dealer the 3rd call (1 each Monday) and given the normal run around (we can do nothing and will ring you when we get the parts in). I decided to give Toyota customer service a ring and explain my problem. I was told she would do some ringing around and get back to me within an hour. Before the hour was up I had received a call from my local dealer to tell me they had the parts for my vehicle! Pretty amazing that. I wonder how long I would have had to wait if Toyota Australia hadn't looked into it for me. So after another 7 day wait to have 2 injectors fitted and all done today. I'll listen for a death rattle in the morning and post again in a week. Job description as follows: 1 TO2370130060 pipe sub assy, 1 TO2370439055 pipe sub-assy, 5 TO90900430013 gaskets HF05, 2 injectors. ========== REPLY ========== I too have had suspension problems. 2008 auto from brand new, pulling severely to one side, a death trap at speed. Returning from a work trip to Portland, overtook a car at 105km/h hit a minor ripple in the road and lost control. By some miracle I corrected it (not by skill). This has happened 3 times now. Still blewing with Nissan as their response to everything is “this is normal". Also complained about speedo being 8% out. This is also normal. ========== REPLY ========== "Last week, just before leaving for vacation, my 2001 Toyota Rav 4 started having problems shifting gears. It would rev up and then clunk into 1st or 2nd gear. I had it towed to a mechanic where he suggested that I trade the car in for another! He told me it would cost $5300 to get a whole new transmission and then they'd have to put a new computer in as well. Who can afford to do that? I'm very interested in the class action suit against Toyota! Please, whatever I can do to help the progress, let me know. I thought Toyota's were supposed to run forever! Mine only has 126,000 miles on it!" I am part of 23 people who have gotten replies from that are gathering information for a class action suit on this problem." POSTED BY: JOANNE MOORE - FRANKLIN, USA 31 MAR 2008 ========== REPLY ========== I have a 2001 Rav4. I took my car to the dealer for the required maintenance as I always do. I asked them to check my transmission because my car was slipping into 2nd gear. I was told that I now need an ECU because the computer is not telling the car to change gears the way it is supposed to. I see that this is a common problem, I was quoted $1500.00 for the replacement. It sounds like I need to get rid of my car. POSTED BY: ADRIAN - GA , USA 20 FEB 2008 ========== ORIGINAL POSTING ========== "TOYOTA RAV4 2001: TRANSMISSION FAILS ON 6 YEAR OLD CAR - After 6 years, and 90,000 kilometres of having my 2001 RAV4 regularly serviced by the dealer at considerable expense, the ECU (transmission computer) has faulted and caused "transmission burning clutches and contaminating internals". The repair has been quoted at $7000.00. I would like to know if this is a problem others have encountered and to warn others considering a RAV4 of this possible issue. The car has only been driven on the road under normal conditions." POSTED BY: CORRINE MARSHALL - MELBOURNE, VIC - AUS 27 SEP 2007 ========== REPLY ========== Just went through exactly the same problem. Our repair bill was just under $8000. I have a five door 2002 RAV4 automatic cruiser. First the car was slipping in gears. It was not a gradual thing eihter ... it just suddenly failed. Upon inspection the clutches were burnt out. The gear box was repaired and it flamed another box. I had the computer checked by Toyota and an independent specialist and no fault codes etc. indicated a problem. In the end a new computer was put in, problem solved! Basically the ECU malfunctioned causing the gear box clutches to burn out. The ECU didn't even indicate any fault codes or go into the safe mode like they are suppose to. Gear box had to come out twice and so did the engine. I got a 24 month warranty on repairs ... make sure you do as well. Will be selling **** before that though! I was lucky that the workshop I go through is owned by a friend and was not charged for the engine coming out 2 and a half times. POSTED BY: SCOTT - BRISBANE, QLD - AUS 24 DEC 2007 ========== REPLY ========== I have just had the same problem. Cost of repairs 4500 to $6000. I have a RAV4 2002 114.000ks. It will take 2 weeks to repair then sell. POSTED BY: LEIGH - BRISBANE, QLD - AUS 5 FEB 2008 ========== REPLY ========== I have a 2002 Rav4. Same problem. The gearbox started slipping due to the computer failure, and I have been told the repair bill will be $6500. POSTED BY: CHRIS - VANCOUVER, BC - CANADA 8 MAR 2008 ========== REPLY ========== I would like to get more information about the class action suit. I am starting the debacle that I see is going to get very costly... POSTED BY: BEVERLY TOOKEY - CARY, NC - USA 15 APR 2008 ========== REPLY ========== I bought my 2002 RAV4 in November of 2006. The check engine light stayed on constantly. I was told it was an O2 sensor and that it would take $300 to fix but that it did not affect the car's performance. In February I received a notice that I should take the vehicle to the dealer to have a recall taken care of, which I did. The check engine light went off but I started having transmission problems. I took it to the dealer and they charged me $150 to check it out. They said I needed a new computer ($1,300). I then took it to a transmission specialist to check out ($85.00). He said it was not my transmission but the computer (EMC). I started researching and found out about this problem being not just mine. Being a single mother with two children and on a very tight budget, this is my only transportation, which I do not consider safe until this gets fixed. I was having this shifting problem in a very busy intersection and was very upset with the fact that Toyota would not stand behind their product and fix the EMC at no cost to the consumer. POSTED BY: KRYSTIE DUNN - MOBILE, AL - USA 26 JUN 2008 ========== REPLY ========== Having same problems - have to replace the computer in mine but will hold onto the bad one just in case Toyota ever decides to step up and back their product. Please let me know if anything develops. POSTED BY: JAMES THAMES - MARIETTA, GEORGIA - USA 30 JULY 2008 ========== REPLY ========== Me Too! Same thing just happened to our 2002 Rav4, 5 door. I got up one morning, started to drive to work and the gears started slipping. I took it Straight to the garage and they said the ECU needed replacing... $4000! This has to be some kind of design fault. We simply don't have the money to repair it! I can't tell you how angry I feel about this! POSTED BY: ROBERT GREGSON - NOWRA, NSW, AUS 21 SEP 2008 ========== REPLY ========== I have a 2004/5 model Rav4 Cruiser, fully loaded. It has traveled 67,000 km. No problems so far. It is very reliable and quality can be felt when driven. I hope people with the same year model have not faced transmission problems. Seems that Toyota has rectified the problem. Any feedback on my model? POSTED BY: RONEEL KUMAR - PALMERSTON, ACT - AUS 21 SEP 2008 ========== REPLY ========== Toyota in Melbourne area has only 2 dealerships that service transmissions and they could not even look at my car for 3 weeks then it was going to take 6-8 weeks for them to repair, what a disappointment in Toyota. Luckily I found another transmission expert to fix it and had it back in a week! Saving thousands in rental car fees! If you have a 2001 RAV4 get it rid of it before this happens. By the way Toyota quoted me $6000.00 to fix it and I would be without the car for almost 3 months, what a deal! POSTED BY: DANA - PORT MELBOURNE, VIC - AUS 22 SEP 2008 ========== REPLY ========== TOYOTA RAV 4 2001 1007,000 KM. ECU - TRANSMISSION ISSUES - I have had the same issues with the ECU as you all manifesting with the transmission suddenly slipping, literally an overnight phenomenon. I had the car checked by usual mechanic whith handheld computer diagnostics, no fault codes; however symptoms still there so stopped driving the car and started to ring around to inform myself. The answers came back thick and fast, it was as if every one could diagnose the problem without even seeing the car. They literally told me what year and model car I had after briefly describing the problems. "Change the ECU ($1700- $2100) and if you are lucky that may fix the problem, if unlucky and you drove the car without noticing in time the transmission will need replacing ($3500 -7500)" was the standard reply. After reading all the posts on web about this and speaking to dozens of independent transmission workshop Experts & Mechanics, I have contacted NRMA, Dept of fair trading, and Channel Seven and Nine regarding doing a story on their "Current Affair", & "Today Tonight" programs as there are some massive safety issues related to this situation - my wife & two young children were nearly rammed by other vehicles several times at traffic lights because of transmission suddenly slipping, the media are interested in this ! I have several experts willing to go on record and speak about this issue. Let me know if you want to form a group to bring this issue into public awareness thus encouraging Toyota to take responsibility for their products and stop sweeping this under the carpet. After my local Toyota workshop replaced the ECU ($1682) the vehicle seemed Ok, but as the transmission will not show up any fault code if it is damaged only time will tell! Confidence in the brand Toyota is now at a very low point with me. Before paying my repair bill I contacted Toyota customer relations Sydney / Taren Point / Tel: 02 9710 3333 and made a serious complaint regarding this issue and informed them of my awareness of just how widespread this issue is and how the media is interested in doing a story on this matter (in 2006 these vehicles were recalled in the USA for software upgrade a free service). Anyway they spoke to the dealer, the dealer spoke to the warranty department and lo and behold they came to the party and reduced my repair bill by $800. This is a start however I am convinced that this should be a free recall service and if transmissions are damaged due to a faulty ECU that controls it the transmission is by definition Collateral Damage for which Toyota also should be responsible and prepared to assist their loyal (till now) customers. If you have your car repaired by Toyota you could try to call customer service prior to paying your bill and hopefully this way you too can at least save some money and collectively we will eventually encourage Toyota to adjust their denial strategy about this matter. Please raise awareness about this issue & tell everyone you know! POSTED BY: RICKY STRONG - SYDNEY, NSW - AUS 28 SEP 2008 ========== REPLY ========== I have just had a similar failure. Cost of repair still unknown. Is this just manifesting itself because of the age of the car and if so is this going to become a more frequent event I wonder. My local Toyota garage say that this failure is unknown by themselves and Toyota. In fact it is the first one. POSTED BY: MAURICE LUSCOMBE - READING, UNITED KINGDOM 8 OCT 2008 ========== REPLY ========== Well I got my car back after 2 weeks after a new computer was put in and a reconditioned gear box. I was so excited, but after another 2 days there was a sound like a helicopter blade going round and round in the 2 front tyres so once again back to the car yard to wait another 4 days and the wheel bearing needed replacing! I am totally over this piece of **** I have had my new car a total of 4 days out of 3 weeks and Toyota have A Lot to answer for I tell you! My local car yard have been fantastic but they have done what needed to be done no questions asked given me a loan car when by law they don’t have to. They are also out of pocket with this being that mine is still under warranty. I also thought of contacting Today Tonight or ACA over this. Some attention has to be brought to this serious Fault with this car! So fingers crossed I get this piece of **** back tomorrow! POSTED BY: JODIE B - NOWRA, NSW - AUS 9 OCT 2008 ========== REPLY ========== Me too. Exactly the same thing has just happened to my 2002 3 door Rav Cruiser at 65,000 K and I've been quoted $6000 for repairs to the transmission and ECU. It too has been regularly serviced and only driven on surfaced roads. As soon as I was told about it I googled the problem and found pages and pages of complaints in the USA as well as all the Australian ones here. I will approach Toyota Customer Service on Monday as a start, but clearly we can have more effect if we work together. I would like to be part of any campaign or group action to get Toyota to take some responsibility for this. I will post feedback on this site. Let me know thanks, Tasha POSTED BY: TASHA - PETERBOROUGH ONTARIO - CANADA 23 OCT 2008 ========== REPLY ========== Hi Andrea I keep getting angrier and angrier each time I read this complaint forum! I can’t believe the exact same thing keeps happening with all of these cars. Clearly it is a major fault which the customer is paying for! Just wanted to know if you had any luck contacting Toyota? Cheers, Jodie POSTED BY: JODIE - NOWRA, NSW - AUS 12 NOV 2008 ========== REPLY ========== Is this only a problem with automatics? I'm considering buying a manual 2001 or 2000. But the one I was going to look at this weekend ia an auto. Will steer clear. I am assuming these are all auto's having this problem. Look forward to advice. POSTED BY: MICHELLE - MELBOURNE, VIC - AUS 13 NOV 2008 ========== REPLY ========== I have just had the same problem with my 2002 RAV4 98,000kms which I have had from new. Without any warning the auto transmission started jolting badly when put into reverse and then two days later the car was slipping gears when I was driving to work. I had it towed to my auto transmission specialist and he said this is a very common problem with the RAV4 at approx 100,000kms - he has just repaired 6 in the past few months. My ECU needs replacing and I won’t know until this is done as to whether I also will need to have the clutch replaced. Total cost $1,000 for the ECU and $2800 if it is the clutch. I hope this is the end of this! My car has always been serviced at Toyota and they never warned me about this problem. Not happy! POSTED BY: D BOYLE - CROYDON, VIC - AUS 21 JAN 2009 ========== REPLY ========== I am interested in the class action suit against Toyota for the ECM problem on the RAV4. I have went through the same sort of headaches that others have mentioned on this thread. Thanks, POSTED BY: GEORGE BATES - SPARTA, NJ - USA 11 FEB 2009 ========== REPLY ========== Hi check out rav4ecm you can get a fix for the computer for less than half the cost of a new one. Unfortunately you may still need the gearbox. Toyota have little idea the damage they have caused to their credibility through ignoring the problem which they were well aware of back in 2006. FORD FALCON EF 1996: RE: CANNOT GET NEW FUEL PUMP TO PRIME *REPLY* |

I would guess you have missed the plug on the outlet side of the new pump. It is hard to see and shoots into the black grommet and blocks the pipe. Look at your bits left over if you still have them. Both transit plugs on the new pump are different, this is a trap especially on genuine Ford pumps. |

========== REPLY ========== We have an 08 Pathfinder purchased new in March 09, we have had the 10.5 Hwy. But only for one and a half tanks. Normally on Hwy is 11.2 but that jumps to 12.3 as soon as you turn off the Highway. My research shows this is what all Diesel Pathfinders from 07 achieve due to the DPF. I told the dealer at the first service they reset the timing on the self learning fuel pump and checked the tyre pressure which helped for the next tank and a half. But the then went back up again. 10k service due soon won't go back to Nissan. Search for more info on PcOA Forum. Very disappointed with fuel consumption 10.5 was supposed to be combined average HWY/CITY? POSTED BY: BRENTON HOFFMANN - ROSEBUD, VIC - AUS 27 JUL 2009 ========== ORIGINAL POSTING ========== "NISSAN PATHFINDER 2006: HAS ANY ONE GOT THE POSTED FUEL ECONOMY ON THE SCREEN OF 10.5LTRS PER 100KM? - I purchased a Nissan Pathfinder in Feb. 2007. The main reaon I chose the Nissan Pathfinder was that it would get 10.5ltrs per 100kms round town and tow 3000kg. This sounded to me the perfect vehicle, how wrong was I. I can’t say that I am unhappy with the vehicle in general as yes it tows my van very well and yes I get around 17-21 ltrs per 100kms towing 2100kgs so I suppose you could say that’s ok. Disconnect the van and it is a completely different vehicle. Towing or not I have a vibration through the drive train at about 90kph. I have never got any better than 14ltrs per 100kms and I have done 2600kms. Nissan told me originally that I would have to be patient and wait until it wore in but now I think it is starting to wear out before I will get any better fuel economy. I calculate that it costs me $500 a trip and to date and about $3000 in the last 26000kms more than it should have. Nissan refuse to do anything about the problem and say that 30% more fuel economy than they advertised on the EPA tag on the windscreen is ok. I say what do you blokes out there think and if you are getting the advertised 10.5ltrs per 100kms you are Very Lucky. What Harmy posted on this site on 26 May 2006 is in my opinion unachievable. It is not only my opinion but Nissan as well. I feel bad one by, by the sales person and also Nissan in general. Regards, Alan" POSTED BY: ALAN ABRAHAMS - SYDNEY, NSW, AUS 14 JUN 2008 ========== REPLY ========== Hi Alan, Well our 2008 Pathfinder was finally returned to us albeit with a new high pressure fuel injection pump - yes that's the extremely expensive one located in the engine bay after a lengthy 5 weeks at the dealer. Our Pathfinder is an auto and it consumes over 14lt p/100kms on average with both city & hwy driving. It has 5,000kms on the clock now and I am hoping that the fuel consumption will soon improve. I can’t believe that other Pathfinder owners state 8-9lts p/100kms average! I can only wait and dream about ours returning the same economy… Apparently on the grapevine, Nissan commenced fitting new particulate filters last year which enabled it to pass strict Euro IV emissions control but has resulted in much greater fuel consumption.... any thoughts? Best, Brendon Soo POSTED BY: BRENDON SOO - CHATSWOOD, NSW - AUS 22 JUL 2008 ========== REPLY ========== Alan, We purchased our Pathfinder in May 2006 and shortly after left with our 17ft caravan for the Gulf, across to Cooktown and down the coast to Sydney. We covered 9160km at an average of 15.3 which includes non-towing. Since then the car has travelled 27000 km of suburban driving at an average of 10.5. I record each fuel purchase but only zero the average consumption occasionally. If I zero the average it will go up to about 11.7 and gradually fall back to 10.5. Regarding your vibration I reported to the dealer a good while ago a vibration or shudder when the car changes down at 80km/hr. First of all they said it was probably to do with the cruise control but it occurs without the cruise control, always at that speed. I reported it again and they test drove it and couldn't find anything but reported it to Nissan. Last week I got a call to say they wanted the car for two days because Nissan had advised then to do some work. The car went in today and I was told Nissan have supplied parts to be fitted. The result remains to be seen. Colin POSTED BY: COLIN - RUSE, NSW - AUS 20 OCT 2008 ========== REPLY ========== I have just realised that nobody mentions whether their vehicle is petrol or diesel. Mine is diesel. Colin POSTED BY: COLIN - RUSE, NSW - AUS 20 OCT 2008 ========== REPLY ========== Hi All, After 16,000kms it appears that our MY08 Pathfinder is finally starting to wear in. Fuel consumption has dropped to about 13lt p/100kms around town and it has not stalled or refused to start since the new Bosch high pressure injection pump was fitted. Perhaps inflating the tires to 38PSI all around has helped attain this bettered fuel consumption? Beyond the initial engine problems (which were indeed major!) the vehicle has proven to be very versatile in the way it: - Can seat many occupants and carry long items - Traverses quietly the many potholed roads of Sydney - Handles on the road and tackles some light off-road duties So a happy ending in closing and I certainly hope that other new generation Nissan Pathfinder owners have had a better experience! Best, Brendon Soo POSTED BY: BRENDON SOO - CHATSWOOD, NSW - AUS 3 JUN 2009 ========== REPLY ========== My comments in regards to the poor fuel economy in the Nissan Turbo Diesel 2007 stands I have never received any better than 14/ L per 100ks ever. I took Nissan to the Small Claims and received a large sum of money. I won’t say how much but if you pursue it you will as the precedent has been set. The reason I won’t state how much $ I received but if you are smart and document every thing as I did and photograph speedo readings and fuel receipts you can’t lose. It took me two years but I would not give up. I had the torch converter replaced owing to a vibration at 80 ks so now the replacement vibrates from zero to what ever speed you do. They tell me that it is Normal and it looks like I have another fight on my hands. POSTED BY: ALAN - SYDNEY, NSW - AUS 9 JUL 2009 ========== REPLY ========== Alan, Congratulations and good work. Do you have a case number we can quote as this makes it easier to motivate complacent public departments? If enough of us take action then Nissan may decide to come up with a solution to this obvious problem. Regards Al POSTED BY: AL - CAIRNS, QLD - AUS 10 JUL 2009 ========== REPLY ========== Interesting Post Alan, we bought an '08 Pathfinder Ti 2.5 Diesel. Issue 1.Plauged with fuel consumptions issues. Lowest fuel consumption 12.8 l/100klms to highest towing a box trailer with 300kgs in it 17.7 l/100klms, astronomical! Three other vehicle around town are running at 9.4 l/100klms. The motor shakes and in turn the whole car.. still under diagnosis. The fuel pump on my 2003 "Free"lander broke and had to be replaced 12 months ago. 6 months ago the rear driver power window unit had to be replaced, now the car overheated suddenly a few days ago and so far I have been told by the mechanic & auto elec the automatic fan for the engine is cutting off-resulting in engine overheating! The best part is they reckon sourcing the part is near impossible. Just absolutely ridiculous. This model of car should have had a permanent recall on it as the Freelanders from the start have been **** lemons. The very first Freelander we had blew an engine at 5000kms - should never have bought another one! If you are thinking of purchasing one of these money pits on wheels - Don't. POSTED BY: MARK KURAN, MELBOURNE, VIC - AUS 12 JAN 2008 ========== REPLY ========== If someone could please help me with some information that would be great, as we are sinking as of right now with our 2003 Freelander with the same cooling problem. Well it has 89000 miles on it and now since the overheating of the car because of the fact that it kept losing coolant we are know having to pay $6000.00 for a new motor that we really don’t have! Our car is at a certified mechanics shop that does work on foreign cars, so I have contacted Land Rover and they are now telling me that if Land Rover approves the motor for our vehicle then we can purchase one (have you ever heard of such). They also said that they can not get motors for these vehicles and that there has been many problems with this happening so I asked if they were doing a recall on this anytime soon? and they stated they don’t see that happening! Also they stated that the motors in the Freelanders pretty much go to **** after 50000 miles, they told my mechanic this! So when I spoke to a gentleman in the parts department he stated that the only way that they are approving these repairs to the engine is if you have warranty or an extended warranty through Land Rover, which of course our warranty ran out at the 50,000 miles. I mean we probably owe 17000 dollars on this car and it is just really stressful because Land Rover is not getting me anywhere with this case. So if someone could send some information on this that would be great, phone numbers to the cttt and the motor vehicle repair industry. Also I did see where someone had asked about taking it public and I am for that because this is not fair! That we are paying for vehicles and mine is still sitting in the shop not moving. Please Help! POSTED BY: BRANDY MOERER - SCOTTSBURG, IN - USA 21 FEB 2008 ========== REPLY ========== Hello, I have a 1999 Freelander that has the same problems as yours did. I have been told I require a new motor, as well as being told how notorious they are for this problem. I am wondering if you could please send me the details of CTTT decision. I would be very keen to talk to you about this if you have the time. I appreciate any help you can provide. Both where build by Powertrain LTD for Rover England, company no longer trading. Cheers Peter POSTED BY: PETER - TAMWORTH, NSW 11/5/2008 ========== REPLY ========== Hi, same problem with our Freelander that our 18 year old drives. Wondering if you have any advice for me from your experience. Thanks. POSTED BY: FRANK CASALENUOVO - LOS ANGELES - USA 11 MAY 2008 ========== REPLY ========== RE: Freelander blown head. Same problem in Australia. There is a solution and it works. First it is a design fault. The thermostat is in the head and the gasket that separates it from the rest of the engine is to thin, not enough gasket between it and the motor and will blow out and warp the head and cost you money. Solution = you need a gasket that blocks out the thermostat housing, you move the thermostat into the return hose to the radiator. Have the head machined and put back together. I do not know if this is Land Rover's solution to this or not, it does work. I have had it done to my '98 Freelander, it is going great since. I have just returned from a 4000 km trip to the mountains and snow. Went like a charm, I hope this works for you. Next car I will go back to a Disco. Regards William Gray. POSTED BY: WILLIAM GRAY - MELBOURNE, VIC - AUS 20 AUG 2008 ========== REPLY ========== I currently have Land Rover Australia in court over total failure of my TD6 Range Rover twice at over 80kph at night on country roads. Unfortunately the CTTT was unable to handle it and it is now in the District Court. Land Rover now refuses to repair any warranty issues. If I can help let me know! Richard POSTED BY: RICHARD JONES - ARMIDALE, NSW - AUS 28 AUG 2008 ========== REPLY ========== William I'm interested in your suggestion, is your 98 Freelander the KV6 engine? My '01 Freelander engine has died after coolant loss problem. Don't know if I will sell the car for salvage value, wreck it myself or install a brand new engine. I'd be keen to find out the precise instructions for moving the thermostat to a new position, if you could provide that kind of detail. NISSAN PATHFINDER 2006: RE: ANY ONE GOT THE POSTED FUEL ECONOMY ON THE SCREEN OF 10.5LTRS PER 100KM? *REPLY* |
||
ISSUE: |
We have an 08 Pathfinder purchased new in March 09, we have had the 10.5 Hwy. |

========== ORIGINAL POSTING ========== "NISSAN PATHFINDER 2006: HAS ANY ONE GOT THE POSTED FUEL ECONOMY ON THE SCREEN OF 10.5LTRS PER 100KM? The motor shakes and in turn the whole car.. still under diagnosis. Regards Steve POSTED BY: STEVE COULTER - THILMERE, NSW - AUS 14 JUL 2009 ========== REPLY ========== Hi Alan, I am compiling documents for a complaint. Is a case number available I could relate to if you are comfortable with that? Regards Steve POSTED BY: STEVE COULTER - THILMERE, NSW - AUS 14 JUL 2009 ========== REPLY ========== You are doing very very well with your fuel consumption. I don’t think many owners out there would be achieving figures as good as yours. Most average around the 13-14ltr per 100km mark from what I’ve seen of them... Regards, Jay. HONDA ACCORD EURO 2007: HONDA RINGWOOD DEALERSHIP IN MELBOURNE *REPLY* |
||
ISSUE: |
I need to add that when left for service, the service staff failed to diagnose the noise in the steering wheel while reversing. The report read that they could not hear it. However, only a day later two nearby mechanics have heard it and diagnosed it and so did the Heidelberg dealership. Hence, this is the quality of the service itself not just the breached duty of care. |

========== ORIGINAL POSTING ========== "HONDA ACCORD EURO 2007: HONDA RINGWOOD DEALERSHIP IN MELBOURNE - Apparently, if you leave you car for service or repairs at Honda Ringwood you can only pray that nothing happens to it. The only time they consider their cars worth any money is when they are selling them to you. Whether a truck reverses into your car while in their car park or their service staff fails to pick up on major failure or someone sets **** under your car they'd just call it Bad Luck. Their disclaimer says so in very fine wording and an even finer print. They can afford to be laid back and arrogant, especially if your car hasn't become total loss in the process because anything else is minor to them. They'd apologise smiling - as if their smile can erase appalling professional ethic or make it more digestible. If you address their lack of ethics they'd launch a counterattack and call you confrontational. They'd arrange a courtesy car for you and call it a special gesture of good will although it's standard practice in all dealerships to get a courtesy car when your car needs to be left for repairs not to mention when your car gets wrecked while on their premises. They say they can't control what's happening in their car park. Is this a sign of good or bad management? Or, is this a sign of total lack of duty of care and bad work ethic? Perhaps all of the above?" POSTED BY: HONDA OWNER - MELBOURNE, VIC - AUS 20 JUL 2009 ========== REPLY ========== Honda Owner, I like your choice of vehicle but posting a second complaint, the same as your first one on the 16th of July on this site about a dealership that had your car in its possession and was damaged by a tow truck is something you need to get over. On the 17th of July, you give someone on this site, advice to read the small print on a contract, without doing the same yourself when you took your car to be serviced. I hope the dealer fixes your car and you get many more years of driving pleasure out of it. Mark. POSTED BY: MARK KURAN - MELBOURNE, VIC - AUS 21 JUL 2009 ========== REPLY ========== Honda Owner, I must say you seem to be going on about the matter like a dealer has intentionally wanted your car damaged. From what you've written it seems pretty obvious that it’s just an accident, and as we all know accidents happen. If the cost of repairing your car is more than half of its current value then yes you have a case as to the vehicle being worth less, and if this is the case then Vic Roads and your insurance company would assess it to be a repairable write-off. In which case the truck must have driven over your car. If this isn’t the case and it’s only a minor repair, well your car will not change in value. Enjoy your Honda. ========== ORIGINAL POSTING ========== "-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- *CONSUMER WARNING: This posting breaches Terms & Conditions of the Complaints Corner but it has been allowed to be published to assist those with Kia Carnival engine problems. Moderator* --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hi my name is Scott I work for Kia for the past 6 years. I've repaired and replaced a lot of Kia carnival engines. I have training certificates and a passport for Kia with all model training complete. From what I can read there are a lot of you angry and upset about the Kia customer service you customers had to deal with. The cause: The engines get very hot and expand over time causing the linings to separate and starts to lose coolant, engine stops or overheating the coolant travels in to the engine oil and destroys the engine. Also I've come across the head gaskets sometimes fail due to heat flow. Solution: I can repair and replace the carnival engines in my time. And a good time for you send me an email: - About the problem - What’s been done to the engine - What Kia have told you to do I will reply back with a quote and an appointment when we can repair the engine. The quote will be between $2000 to $5000. A lot cheaper than the Kia dealerships. I have very competitive pricing and I'm not labour hungry Scott Edgar" POSTED BY: SCOTTY EDGAR - PENRITH, NSW - AUS 3 NOV 2007 ========== REPLY ========== Scott, You can only help people in NSW what about the hundreds effected in other parts of Australia? If you have worked for KIA you would have a lot of inside information on what KIA have advised their dealer network & you should publish these details on the Web e.g.: What KIA knew & when they were aware of it. This will assist other consumers take KIA through the courts & make KIA pay for repairs & replacements. In other words become a whistle blower & bring the house of KIA crumbling down around their heads. Mark POSTED BY: MARK KURAN - MELBOURNE, VIC - AUS 4 NOV 2007 ========== REPLY ========== Hi Scotty, I have a KIA Carnival LS 2003 Auto with 62000 Klms; it has had all of the regular servicing. The whole car shakes like jelly when under load (as low as 40kph), it feels like the front wheels are going to fall off. I take my foot off the gas, shaking stops, my mechanic has eliminated the leads, spark-plugs, tires and water possibly in the fuel from causing the problem. It doesn't do it when in neutral or when revving up to stall. We are stumped, can you offer any advice. Rodger POSTED BY: RODGER - BLACKTOWN, NSW - AUS 20 NOV 2007 ========== REPLY ========== Scott what you are doing is great but there is one problem ... the problem will occur again and I for one haven’t got 5000 to spend every few months to fix the problem. My Kia had the whole engine replaced in 2005 and the gasket is leaking again. Kia have to do more. POSTED BY: LORRAINE TYSON - YARRAVILLE, VIC - AUS 24 NOV 2007 ========== REPLY ========== Scott, I am asking for some advice, I hope you can help. I have a 2002 Carnival I purchased new, when it had done 41000kms the motor leaked oil and was replaced (short motor recond by RPM). Now it has done a total of 115,000kms and the engine has dropped the ringlands out of 3 pistons. Have you come across this problem before and if so do you know what is the cause? Hope to hear from you.
