NISSAN NAVARA STX 2007:  SECOND CLUTCH BLOW OUT IN 32,000KM'S AND APPARENTLY IT'S WEAR AND TEAR!    *COMPLAINT*

ISSUE:
CLUTCH

What the **** is Nissan thinking? A new clutch at 10,000Km's as the old one failed and now again at 32,000Km's and they say it's my fault as it's general wear and tear? Also they hit me with my tail shaft is damaged and that'll be another $3000? I need as many people with these issues to please email me as I am putting together a case for the ombudsman who is very very keen to see what sort of quality is being produced by Nissan.

Hi Tym,
Just about in the same boat. Bought STX new in Oct 2006 and the clutch went at 28k. Nissan dealership tried to give me the same **** that you got but I showed them the review in the Dog and Lemon Guide they backed down and the clutch was replaced in only ten days. It was during Xmas and the Head office sent the wrong clutch first (wouldn't have one in Western Australia of course).

Lucky me, second clutch has packed up with 71K on the clock (43K for the replaced clutch). Booked in for Monday, no argument, no nothing. Service technician reckons their averaging a replacement every week. Shared our experiences regarding the indestructible Valiants. Suggested I ring Nissan Head Office, they’re definitely not interested but suggested I Buy their extended warranty. I pointed out that bad press can result in a bad name and that sales eventually die when people pour **** on their product. Obviously they don't care and it would seem that the Ombudsman etc are not too interested judging from the number of posts regarding this problem.

Kind regards, John.

P.S When I get the fixed vehicle back I am thinking of parking it outside the dealership with a trailer full of lemons. Offering free lemons or pay those **** $50K and get a lemon in any colour of your choice. Today Tonight might pick up on it then and shame Nissan into doing something right by their soon to be ex customers.

Hi Tym

Like you, I also bought a Nissan Navara STX. The vehicle has had a lot of problems (drive train included) but was also delivered with faulty paint work. After reviewing the Nissan web site I discovered that Nissan put all there cars through a Quality Assurance process, checking for faults in the paint work.

Unfortunately, my vehicle displayed defects that contradicted what was being advertised. So I emailed the dealerships - service manager asking for the QA documentation. The first response I received was “no manufacture’s paperwork available”. Shortly after this, I accidentally received an email where Nissan deny any knowledge of the QA process and state: “NQAW – Not Nissan Australia web site, am unaware of what this refers to”.

I responded with an email to the GM of the dealership asking for the QA documentation and outlined the statements made on the web site and included web links to the QA pages that suggest that these faults should not exist. The response I received was “we are still waiting on Nissans reply”

After several months, I returned to the web site and noticed one of the web pages (the one specific to the fault in my paint work) address had changed, but the QA process was still being promoted on the web site. The dealership has used every **** in the book to get me to take my business elsewhere and I was eventually, told by the GM “You’ve been unfortunate, you’ve bought a model that’s not as up-to-scratch as some”

Unfortunately; I have never received QA paper work from either Nissan or the dealership and would welcome an opportunity to promote transparency about this issue. Please feel free to forward this information to the Ombudsman.

Regards, Glenn

D40 STX - my first clutch went at approx. 18k and next at approx. 20k. Just waiting for this one to go (now up to $27k) and hopefully the prize will be a single fly, heavy duty clutch at Nissan's expense (I'm not holding my breath).

Happy to be kept in the loop re Ombudsman.

March 2008 2.5 diesel 35000km noticed clutch slipping. Took it in and was told possibly wear and tear. Now 47000km still hasn’t been fixed. About to take it in and brake noises started. Brake place told me both rotors needed replacing too dangerous to drive. How can this happen. Rang a solicitor and he said there is such a thing called an Implied Warranty where you expect some thing to be of a certain quality. This car has not been that. There is a case for legal action if clutch and rotors not replaced.

My petrol D40 dual cab 4wd has lost tail lights along with headlight height adjust and heater control back lights only, all other electrical working in and out. Anybody any ideas? Can’t find a fuse to state these uses under the bonnet. I thought the truck was great until reading the forum for the first time tonight. By the way 36000km, new tyres, new rotors, new pads, new springs, new struts new bushes but... no new clutch! Just got a sticking tappet/valve in cold weather this morning, maybe it's all starting.

MAHINDRA PIK-UP DUAL CAB 2WD 2006:  MAHINDRA GOOD VEHICLE - SALESMAN NOT SO GOOD    *REPLY*

30 JUN 2009

ISSUE:
DEALER - CARS, NEW

Just replying to comment on Mahindra Pik-up dealer experience. I had exactly the same kind of experience as I’m sure that we had the same salesman. It’s a pity that such a good vehicle is let down by one person. It took weeks for my vehicle to be delivered to me as I live on the mid north coast.

When vehicle came off car carrier at nine o’clock at night I’m glad that it was delivered to me at petrol station as I only had 12 lb of pressure in tyres and I had a drive of sixty kilos to get home. Also vehicle came with tow bar but no tow bar tongue, also only 1 set of keys, no handbook or service books but I did get a full tank of diesel but to my shock on my first fill - up I find surface rust inside filler cap area.

I had no end of problems with salesman promising to fix problems so I eventually contacted Mahindra Australia and then things were corrected very fast. It’s a bad situation that such an excellent vehicle is let down by a salesman with such a bad track record.

I now have 16000km on my Mahindra and the engine is just starting to free up. I am very happy that I bought a Mahindrea pik-up. I live not far from a small area that has a lot of Indians and sheikhs and every comment that they say to me about my Mahindra is very positive.

Very interesting regarding the Toyota Grande. This is a vehicle I wanted to swap for my 2007 RAV4. RAV4 slips when on a hill when you change gear then it clunks like the problem someone else complained about. Very disappointed with fuel consumption, cruise control can vary by 15kms, brakes do not stop if you are on gravel.

I have complained about all of them and they are sick of me. No one is interested. I had traded my 2004 Petrol Prado for this vehicle and would like to go back to one. I wanted a diesel Grande but your reports aren't good on that one either.

LANDROVER DISCOVERY TD5 2001:  ABS/TC/HDC LIGHTS COMING ON     *REPLY*

30 JUN 2009

ISSUE:
BRAKES

There is a strong possibility that this is down to lubrication and associated electrical conductivity issues with the brakes and sensors. Since we have moved house, I've had to try out a different garage for servicing - they used a copper based lube on the brakes. 2-300 hundred miles later, the 3 ABS/TC/HDC warning lights came on as I stopped at some traffic lights. I turned the engine off and restarted, but the ABS light was still on. A few minutes later the others also came back on.

Fortuitously I wasn't far away from where I used to get the car serviced, the mechanic took one look at the brakes through the rims, saw the copper and said that they were now using aluminium based grease. They cleaned the brakes up, regreased them, reset the diagnostics and I've had no trouble since.

Apparently the copper based lube can cause minor blips which get flagged as problems by the diagnostic system and when these exceed given level it switches the warning lights on.

FORD FALCON XR6 BF 2005:  LAG WHEN TAKING OFF, THEN LOUD CLUNK AS DIFF ENGAGES    *FEEDBACK WANTED*

30 JUN 2009

DIFFERENTIAL

My XR6 has had a problem at low-speed acceleration since I bought it as an ex-demonstrator with 11,000km on it. After coming to nearly a complete stop, when accelerating away, the revs come up but no diff engagement happens for a second. When it engages, it does so with a loud clunk and the car lurches forward.

My Ford dealership have not been able to diagnose the problem and have done things like rebalance the drive shaft and tried different oils with absolutely no effect. The dealership has assured me this is not a problem encountered before. However another XR6 owner I know has had the same problem, with the same lack of fix by his dealership.
Any ideas from anyone?

Re “The dealership has assured me this is not a problem encountered before.”

It's called “Driveline shunt ". Nearly all (Manual Gearbox) BA / BF are doing it. When you drive with the Engine hot and you back-off the accelerator the computer cuts the fuel supply to the engine. As soon as you put your foot back on to the accelerator fuel starts to flow again and you get the “Big Bang ". I reset my Spark-Plugs to 0.8mm down from the factory 1.1mm. It did reduce the problem.

Hi Graeme

I purchased a XR6, 6speed BF Auto vehicle as an ex demo and have had the same problem as yourself. I have had it back to the dealer at least 10 times and they sent over a German gentleman from ZF gearbox's to take a look at it (also around another 6 where to be seen from various other dealers). I took it back again since he left and told them that it still has this problem. I took a serviceman for a drive and they finally felt the problem and are awaiting instruction from the German gentleman as apparently Ford are not allowed to take the gearbox apart to take a look, it is all down to him.

KIA CARNIVAL  1999:  COOLING SYSTEM FAULT    *REPLY*

30 JUN 2009

ISSUE:
COOLING SYSTEM

I'm surprised to hear that you had sufficient confidence in your 1999 Kia Carnival to drive it from Melbourne to Brisbane. Many others attempting to drive such distances never made it.

Your comments on the cooling system may confuse some unfortunate owners of Kia Carnivals. Yes, we all accept that when the temperature of coolant increases there will be a commensurate increase in volume which in turn will be released under pressure into the radiator neck to the overflow hose and into the coolant reservoir bottle. This procedure will reverse as the coolant cools down and coolant will be returned to the radiator.

We also acknowledge that the cooling system is checked by removal of the radiator cap when the engine is cold.

Failure of coolant to return to the radiator can be readily observed by the collapse of the major coolant/radiator hoses which is quite distinct. Additionally, low coolant levels will register as elevated temperature on the temperature gauge which on a KV6 Kia engine means stop immediately.

It is most unusual for the process of overflow or return of coolant to the radiator be impeded in a regularly serviced engine unless some type of 'stop leak' additive has been added to the coolant. These additives can interfere with the operation of the radiator cap and prevent coolant returning from the overflow bottle to the radiator.

Have you considered that you could well be a victim of a 'quick fix' solution, albeit temporary when you purchased the vehicle at auction. A number of sealant compounds are readily available to cover up the well known engine failure of oil entering the coolant or coolant entering the cylinders at the head gasket interface.

Good luck with your new/reconditioned engine.

========== ORIGINAL POSTING ==========
"KIA CARNIVAL LS 1999: COOLING SYSTEM FAULT - The V6 engine used in the Kia Carnival is common to a number of other vehicles where the overheating problem does not occur. One very likely problem in all modern vehicles is the displacement system that allows non-technical persons to check the cooling system water level from a plastic container rather than risk serious burns by removing the radiator cap. The system allows water, expanding with heat, to be saved to the plastic reservoir and returned to the radiator as the temperature and volume decreases in the radiator. This system provides a safe alternative for the average vehicle user.

The problem is that to work there must be an air-tight seal from the radiator to the plastic reservoir. If due to a worn connecting hose, damaged reservoir, wrong or faulty radiator cap, water is not returned to the radiator then eventually the radiator will run out of water, the engine will overheat and the head gasket will fail.

I bought a Kia Carnival for my daughter and experienced that exact fault.

Danger, the only time you should check your radiator water level is when the engine is totally cold. The best time is in the morning. With over 40 years experience in the motor trade primarily building performance engines I have seen this problem occur many many times.

By the way, it seems that Kia entered the people mover business by building, certainly the early Carnival, from parts sourced from other manufacturers around the world. The result being a cost effective vehicle for not much money. Not everything then works in concert as we might like but, having bought my daughter’s car from an auction in Melbourne, it managed 726 kilometers from 1 tank on its way to Brisbane. Not bad for something weighing 1.8 tonne.

It now has a DVD/CD/TV with a 10 inch monitor. The best accessory ever invented if you take a bunch of kids on any kind of trip.

Other problems to investigate are front end alignment, seized handbrake cables and door sliders. With all its faults it still remains a bargain. "

How wrong can people be! Ok so you’ve built some engines. Do a bit more research and you will find that these engines fail in everything they have been put in. It’s simple, the cylinder sleeves move, they don’t blow head gaskets, the liners move and crack. Simulating a blown gasket, but your an expert, you already know that. Good luck with your daughter’s car, you’re going to need it.

Would you mind contacting me so I can provide some information about your qualifications and background to back up your document?

"NISSAN NAVARA D-40 2008: ANOTHER KNACKERED NAVARA CLUTCH - 2ND IN 2 MONTHS IN 9 MONTH OLD VEHICLE - I bought the vehicle in June 08 specifically to tow a caravan (GVM 1.75t) and was assured it was the vehicle for the job.

Almost from the outset there were problems - not in day to day driving, but whenever it is asked to do something extra. These included not coming out of low 4 (without jiggling via reverse), heavy oil smell in cabin when under any pressure, clutch deteriorating and slipping.

Clutch replaced at 6 months with <18k on the odometer. Now clutch has gone again (not yet 20k) and Nissan dealership is forewarning me that Nissan may claim it is not a warranty issue.

Reading the many posts on the issues, it would seem I would be better off writing off the clutch and going straight to an after market heavy duty single plate clutch fitted. Letting Nissan off the hook like this is too galling for words!

What to do?"

I had three clutches replaced in 8000km, after the third a heavy duty clutch and flywheel was put in the vehicle at Nissans expense, this solved the problem. I tow a 2100kg van plus about 300kg of additional equipment. The original clutches are not strong enough for the job. This vehicle is a power house and easily tows my van+. Recently I went for a trip of around 2000km and achieved 14.2L/100km, reasonably hilly. The average around the city is 10.5L/100km. For such a small motor it performs very well.

I presented Nissan with a letter which got them to replace the clutch with a heavy duty clutch and flywheel.

Contact me it you require further information and contents of the letter.

Extract from letter below.

We purchased this vehicle for its ability to perform a specific task, that is to tow up to 3000 kg. All of Nissan’s advertising, documentation and dealer information specifically promises it will do this. This vehicle is not satisfactory as is not able to operate within design parameters as required and as promised. This is not the only Navara with this issue.

Surely there have been enough complaints and issues with Nissan’s choice of clutch for the Navara. How many owners have had a gut full of 'it’s your driving' or 'we’ve already changed it we are not going to cover it'. My clutch is still ok, however since new never felt right and I’m waiting for the day it packs in.

Surely there has to be something in place to Recall all the D40's and fit Heavy Duty clutch kits to end this once and for all. I think Nissan’s biggest mistake was to build the D40 in Spain, the fit and finish is poor, **** my old Hyundai was better put together and obviously it shows in the clutch choice.

Craig, I really suggest you give Nissan the flick on this issue as they will never admit that the D40 clutch and dual mass flywheel setup is not up to the task that the motor asks of it. Occasionally they will do a warranty replacement but they are rare. Get in touch with Xtreme Clutch out of Sydney **** and get them to put a kit together that replaces the factory dual mass flywheel and clutch components with a traditional machinable flywheel and clutch kit that either you or your local 4wd workshop mechanic can fit. You should be able to do this for about the same amount as you already spent on the useless unit that Nissan sold you as a replacement. Yes you will not have Nissan warranty on this, but as you know you never really have, and this unit will last with the bonus of not having to throw the flywheel away when it does come around to fitting a new clutch.

Hope this helps and best of luck. Ja.

The dealer **** me around a lot. Pushing me to use their finance etc. I'm still not finished on that particular front. The vehicle was sold to me by a salesman that had been prosecuted recently in two states for motor vehicle trading "irregularities", including trading without a licence.

Well the vehicle is just over a week old now and has 1200km on its clock. Not a problem except for the miserly dealer not putting any fuel in it. 2km I got when it ran out on its maiden voyage. They sent a guy after an hour with an empty jerry can. I had to fill it and take it back!

Then by the time I had reached Bankstown, another urgent call - "we put the wrong number plates on it"

So I pull up at a garage and wait for the sales **** to turn up. No tools, I had to remove and replace the number plates. While I was waiting checked tyre pressures. 12 psi instead of 30 in all tyres. Dealer charges?

He then advised me that they had supplied the wrong VIN number to the RTA.

Obviously, they all learnt their craft at the "Ronald McDonald School of impress your customer"

Back to the good stuff: Published fuel economy is 9.9l/100km but I get 8.0.
Interior trim is rubbish, but vehicle is as solid as a rock.

Hi Russell.

Check the rubber door seal that runs up the "A" (windscreen) pillar. If it is not seated correctly (especially at dash height) you may need to partly remove it, stretch it slightly, squeeze it together, then re-fit it to the bodywork ensuring it is fully seated. Also check the rubber boot for the door wiring is sealing correctly on the "A" pillar and also the edges of the windscreen at the "A" pillar. If water enters through this area and gets into wiring connectors in the lower pillar you can get all sorts of electrical dramas.

Hi Haydn. Most likely the torque converter splines have stripped out. Will require removing the transmission to repair.

"MITSUBISHI MAGNA EXECUTIVE 3.5 2001: NO DRIVE GEARS - I was driving home from work yesterday and got about 6 kms from home and I went to change lanes and accelerate and the revs went up but the car started slowing down. Pulled over and turned the car off for 5 minutes then turned it back on and put it into drive and the car wouldn’t move. Tried all gears and the same thing. The revs change as if the car is in gear but when I go to take off the car just revs and won’t go anywhere. Has anybody had this problem or know what it is causing it?"

The exact same thing happened to me just tonight. Was driving home from work then felt no power only revs had to pull over called the r.a.a then got a tow truck: The dash lights were flashing between D Drive and N Neutral after this happened until I pulled over and turned the car off. Magna 2001 3.5 (let me know how you went in fixing it am going to call a few places in the morning).

Took it in to City motors as they serviced the vehicle last. City motors fixed the engine management unit? Car continued to have same problem but hello it was out of warranty. We refused to pay for next repair. Alternator was apparently replaced at Holden expense but we still have the problem of it stalling continuously. It goes back tomorrow for the 4th time. Has anyone got any constructive comments?"

KIA CARNIVAL LS 1999:  COOLING SYSTEM FAULT    *ADVICE*

29 JUN 2009

ISSUE:
COOLING SYSTEM

The V6 engine used in the Kia Carnival is common to a number of other vehicles where the overheating problem does not occur.

Dear Kerry,

I have a document you have written explaining why the Carnival engines fail (forwarded by Dale Morris). I plan to take Kia to VCAT for compensation for my Carnival (which is sitting in the garage leaking oil) and would like to include your document in my file of supporting documents. Would you mind contacting me so I can provide some information about your qualifications and background to back up your document?

Thank you

SERVICE QUALITY

Mercedes Benz and BMW are at the forefront of technology! What drugs are you on?
I work on these cars day in day out. Benz, VW, Audi, Volvo, all ****. I would put these cars in the same category as the Kia Carnival. Endless window regs, coolant temp sensors, throttle bodys, coils, air flow meters, and don’t forget the **** house automatics. You must do 3 autos a week.

I agree with most of what you said, but no way are they at the forefront of technology. They’re trying to be, but failing. How many Toyota, Honda, Subaru’s, need brake disc and pads replaced at 60,000? Or autos rebuilt with a $5000-$9000 bill. My 89 model Camry is still on the original auto, air flow meter and discs. My 05 model Corolla might not handle as well as a BMW or VW Golf, but with 40,000 on the clock, never seen the dealer again and never had any problems as above. Also my auto shifts a heap better than any of the above vehicles.

Don’t forget the Audi Dash boards. Had an 06 model in on Thursday that needs replacing. 43,000km. $1800 for a dash. I could go on for ever.

This sums it up. I'd have a Holden or a Ford any day. Also Japs have it in the bag.

"I’m sorry, you must have misinterpreted my age. No I’m not a 'dinosaur’ as you described me, nor do I sit behind a desk. I have been on the spanners since I was 15 and have solely worked for Mercedes Benz and Porsche since then. Having said that I have dabbled even with BMW, Ferrari, Alfa, Holden, Toyota and Audi. Thanks to your comments, I have only proven my point further.

If you knew bread from butter about cars, you would most definitely know that Mercedes Benz and BMW are at the forefront of technology development. Most other manufacturers just follow their ideas several years later and this is why I can safely say that I’m more up to date with vehicle diagnostics than you. Have you actually ever worked on a Benz?

I find your comment of them being the 'easiest' car to work on quite humorous. I’m assuming you may be basing your theory on a brochure you read somewhere. Maybe in a glossy magazine? And yes, Mercedes Benz do charge quite a bit of money... because the vehicles are too complicated for the regular grease monkey."

"MERCEDES-BENZ ML350 2006: RICH, OBNOXIOUS VEHICLE OWNERS - I would just like to respond to the comments made about Chateau Moteur. I am a very experienced vehicle technician and am more than used to these type of comments made by 'hard done by' vehicle owners whom do nothing but pretend to know the workings of their vehicle and what is best for it. The simple fact is, these vehicles are not Ford Falcons or Holden Commodores but extremely complicated pieces of technology.

Problem diagnosis is rarely a matter of a five minute quick fix that most customers expect whilst they wait, sipping latte's in the cafe. People who do not appreciate the complexity of these vehicles should not own them! While reading the comments posted about chateau moteur I could not help but laugh myself **** about the **** of this particular owner. I highly Doubt that a factory trained technician would confuse an air conditioning 'whirring' noise with a torque converter lockup clutch fault as you had stated.

It was most likely that the fault had been correctly diagnosed and corrected the first visit, however there is always somebody who wants to take advantage of the 'the customer is always right' theory (which, may I add is completely unavoidable in order to keep high-salary business people happy) and see what they can get away with.

I can guarantee, any company would not want a customer to have a loan car for any lengthy period of time... it must be annoying having to drive a new Mercedes Benz for no cost at all that includes free fuel right? Yea ok. I could rant and rave about rich snobs all day, but I won’t as I have a life."

Your experience seems to be behind a desk rather than under a car... you would be a dinosaur in these days. All cars are complicated bits of machinery today not just the Benz. Try checking the system settings on the car's computer. Look at your manual to see how. My crewman has an option to turn that feature off. It might also do it if there is water in a door sensor. My car does the same thing after driving it in the rain, but it dries out after a few hours.

Reply back & I can forward you some info that could assist.

You have left too many gaps in your story which makes it so difficult to offer advice or assistance. How are we to know to help you?

e.g.: Bought a used KIA in April 2009 that is still under a dealers used car warranty?
The dealer is stalling?
The dealer is not going to fix it?
Perth Dealer / Bunbury dealer?
I have lodged a complaint with fair trading?
The vehicle has now traveled? KM's

The dealer has to fix it in a timely manner under WA used vehicle warranty rules. If he stalls lodge a complaint with Fair Trading, why are you letting him waste your time. When will you draw a line in the sand at 6 weeks? 10 weeks? 12 weeks?

Sorry to be so short but as you can see there is a lot you can do to move things along.

"MITSUBISHI MAGNA TR 1991: AUTO IS STUCK IN ONE GEAR - PROBABLY 3RD - Just bought this '91 Executive. When I test drove it a month or so ago it drove alright - pretty good actually. The problem is that after making a totally stupid cheap offer at the time and then walking away the price was accepted and I drove it home today. In One Gear. The power and O/Drive function buttons work, and the indicator lights glow, but it's sluggish as from still - and of course wants to sit on 3500 revs @ 110 kmh. Is there a known fault like this? Or a basic area to look at, like kick down cables or electrical connections? There has just been a Lot of rain over a week or three, and the car even had a litre or two of water in the exhaust - the car had to be jump started, and has a small very cheap Kmart battery (230 CCA!) that is no way big enough for a big 4 cylinder 2.6 ltr engine. That's getting swapped out tomorrow morning for a good 550 CCA alternative."
