NISSAN NAVARA  2008:  RE: TOWING WITH A NISSAN NAVARA     *REPLY*

31 JAN 2009

ISSUE:
CLUTCH

You not alone buddy, I had the same problem since I bought this Navara. Since March 2008 I felt the unusual condition of the clutch. After a month of my observation still am not comfortable with the clutch. I decided to bring it back to Nissan dealer. They said they adjusted already but still the same problem. Many times the engine suddenly stop if I even delayed for a seconds to push the clutch. Then I decided again to brought it back to Nissan. You know how many times I brought my Navara on them? I had 7 times and still am not comfortable with the clutch. They decided to change the primary clutch master but unfortunately they did not fixed the problem. That's why am still fighting on it to change my unit or refund my money back. I will never ever buy a Nissan car anymore.

Allan,
The vehicle tows OK providing you carry enough Fuel. You might as well buy a Petrol vehicle as it is 30% cheaper, fuel that is and the vehicle is cheaper also. Better still buy a Mitsubishi or something else.

I posted the Item below, towing with a manual is a problem, (read below) I am not the only one with this problem. An auto will work, at least you will get off the mark without clutch failure.

"NISSAN NAVARA STX D40 DIESEL 2008: CLUTCH FAILURE X 2 - This vehicle is noted in the specs as being able to tow 3000kg's. I am just about to have the second clutch replaced in it as it slips and vibrates when towing my caravan (2000kg). This vehicle has done less than 10000K, this vehicle is not capable of doing what the manufacture says. If the next clutch fails, (which expect will as they put in the same parts without changes) I think it is time for the office of fair trading to become involved. Does anybody have any info that that might help me or other owners in this position?"

I have a Nissan ST3.0 turbo diesel that has 28000Klms on clock & the clutch has just gone. Nissan not interested, not under warranty not a manufacturing problem possibly just the way you drive! Not good enough for the amount of money paid and the fact that 98% of klm's done were on highways. Any feedback appreciated.

Ring Nissan customer complaints, give them a deadline to return your call. Otherwise Department of Fair Trading is a good solution. Yours is not an isolated case. Nissan have known about this for some time, and as usual hope it will go away. I have contacted people on this site and are gathering information to determine what action will be taken as a group.

Nissan are providing a vehicle that will not perform to the specs as promised, that is to tow the specified weight without the clutch failing, and they are not able to provide a solution.

Maybe requesting a refund through legal avenues by all concerned is the way to go.

Will keep gathering info.

I have D40 Navara and have had problems since new.

1st day I got it the car went in to get the 2 passenger doors repainted and part of the roof done. 10 months down the track the front passenger guard has to be resprayed as there are defects under the paint. $2500 cost to Nissan to get this done when it gets approved by warranty.

2nd fuel economy - March 2008 auto 2.5TD and I barely get 480km to a tank. Most ever had is 530km to a full tank, they say it is my driving. I told them we would change from doing 50km a morning and afternoon to and from work on the motorway, to driving 10km to my work on the motorway and they say it is still my driving. Gee my missus must really flog the **** out of it with our 2 year son in the back to and from work.

Nissan say nothing is wrong and that’s the way it is.... if I don’t like if I should trade it in and get a new car. Got Nissan to do a manual fuel consumption test. This is the foreman driving down the motor with no aircon on or radio doing 90 kph down the M1 for a 100km and back. They got 11.1L not that’s with the speedo out 7km so they are only doing 84. Who drives on the M1 doing 84kph in a 110kph zone?

I will never buy a Navara again and I am bad mouthing it to everyone I know and meet.

WARNING SAFETY  0:  TOWING IN 5TH GEAR/OVERDRIVE    *ADVICE*

31 JAN 2009

ISSUE:
TOWING

When you are using your vehicle to tow it is strongly recommended that you do not use 5th gear/overdrive. This goes for both manual & automatic transmissions. You Will eventually destroy your transmission. You will not find this information in your car owner’s manual. I have seen many transmissions destroyed from towing this way.

What exactly wears out in a gearbox or transmission, when towing in 5th or overdrive? I have never had this experience. Is this your personal opinion or are you quoting someone?

Do the manuals say why you should not tow in 5th or overdrive?
POSTED BY: MARK KURAN - MELBOURNE, VIC - AUS 4 FEB 2009

When towing in 5th/overdrive you are applying power through the gears and they will eventually break destroying the rest of the transmission. I have seen this many times through my experience as a mechanic.

I own a Toyota Prado and the only comment in the owner’s manual is to drive in 4th gear while towing to maintain engine braking. I have known many people to have to pay for another transmission both manual and auto.

Let me get this right here Len. You say that when towing in 5th/overdrive you are applying power through the gears and they will eventually break destroying the rest of the transmission. In the other 4 speeds is power is not going through the gears? Does this mean that my Mazda E2000 van with 520,000kms and mostly driven in 5th gear with over a ton in it is going to break its gearbox? Good thing that you are not my mechanic.

Some vehicles don’t like the extra load on the 5th gear and can eventually cause problems with it. In 4th gear it is a direct drive through the transmission and very minimal load is on the gears themselves.
POSTED BY: VAUGHAN - BRISBANE, QLD - AUS 15 APR 2009

========== REPLY ==========
The problem is when vehicles are Towing or driving with extra load it overheats the oil in the transmission which in turn breaks down the oil faster and causes damage to the transmission. It happens mostly in Autos but the same can happen in manuals. Putting external oil cooler or replacing the transmission oil at closer intervals can slow the process but the way most vehicles are built these days transmission damage will happen over time anyway.
POSTED BY: TODD - ROCKINGHAM, WA - AUS 16 APR 2009

========== REPLY ==========
Todd,

It makes sense to me that if you are towing or driving loaded that things will heat up but I'm presuming that would occur through all the gears? I understand the need for having an external oil cooler too.

I still do not understand Len Zammels original post where he states that "it is strongly recommended that you do not use 5th gear/overdrive. This goes for both manual & automatic transmissions. You Will eventually destroy your transmission."

And his explanation that "When towing in 5th/overdrive you are applying power through the gears and they will eventually break destroying the rest of the transmission. I have seen this many times through my experience as a mechanic" - just doesn’t make sense to me.

Mark.

This is how I see it. In top gear where one revolution of the input shaft equals one revolution of the output shaft the torque flows in a straight line through a straight locked shaft. If fifth gear is an overdrive as most five speeds seem to be, the power flow through the box is through gears which can induce lateral forces on the teeth and bearings. So if you have a true five speed box where top (5th) is direct then that's the gear to use. If it is an overdrive box where fourth is direct then that's the gear to cruise in with a big load. I’m sure oil and heat play a part but it all comes back to power (torque) flow through the box.

Get it?
POSTED BY: GAZZA - MELBOURNE, VIC - AUS 17 APR 2009

========== REPLY ==========
Mark, the reason you shouldn’t tow in 5th gear in a manual transmission is due to power flow through the trans. Having read your posts over the last couple of years it seems you are a mechanic. If that’s the case then you should be aware of the how power is transferred through the gearbox.

In 4th gear power is straight through. As in power thru input shaft direct to output shaft. In 5th gear it is driven thru the input shaft, thru the secondary cluster to 5th gear, 5th gear itself is the smallest gear in the trans. So it is put under extreme load and will eventually fail. The reasoning for not towing in "top” gear in an auto is due to the lock up clutch on the converter, put simply they are not capable of taking the strain when towing.

I know these are simple layman terms but as a mechanic you should know what I'm talking about. Steve

Sway bars replaced after that. Now the vehicle is using way too much fuel and Nissan have been running tests for approximately 8 weeks now, only just decided it needs a new Injector Pump.

Clutch has also just gone so waiting to get that replaced. Cabin fills with smoke / oil smell really bad… Nissan have no answers for this. Dust fills the cabin because the door seals have **** themselves. 2 doors are rattling really bad sounding like they are about to fall off their hinges.

I was told when I bought this vehicle it would be perfect for off road (as I work in the bush)... it’s been nothing but drama after drama after drama. Even the Service Manager at Nissan has told me that the D40's are a bucket of **** and he has way too many of them coming in with problems. Class Action is the way to go we believe. I have consumer affairs building a case against Nissan as we speak. My vehicle has now done 60,000km and will be out of warranty by the end of this year, its had over $22,0000 worth of repairs on it already. Nissan are not getting away with this! Hi, my 2003 turbo Astra SRi goes through oil like fuel. I have to refill it once every 10 days (using the recommended oil). Can any one advise what this could be? I took it to the mechanics and he said it needed an oil change and oil filter changed. He did that but it did not help,

Does anyone know what this problem is? Can anyone suggest a good mechanic for Holden Astra turbo's in Brisbane?

Looks like the engine is sludged or worn out.

One cheap suggestion:

Change oil and filter.
Use an engine oil flush first.
Use a heavier oil grade - like a synthetic 10W50 (try Mobil 1 premium).

Cheers.

I'd say do a compression test as well, also maybe your valve stem seals are gone. Does the car blow any smoke when it hit's boost?

Turbo seals are worth a check on the turbo, these things all seem like a lot of trouble but they are not for the price of a new engine later down the track...

Or I'd say it's been thrashed in its previous life unfortunately like a lot of turbo cars (VL Turbo Commodore) get my point...

Good luck with it and I hope all turns out well for you and doesn't end up costing an arm and a leg to fix.

Thanks for your posting & your determination, we also have a joke car parked outside our house now. We purchased our vehicle 18 months ago with the addition of a new member to our family, already having 2 teens we required a larger vehicle for longer trips. We had a pre-purchase inspection carried out @ which the mechanic informed us the motor was in good condition & that the heads had been previously off & gaskets replaced with better than the originals.

In Jan last year the head gasket blew, heads off, overhauled, new gaskets & reassembled, $1200 later back on the road. 12 months later, same problem again, used 9 litres of coolant and numerous stops to limp home (less than 100km). Contacted Kia who advised me to take it to one of there dealers to repair & request for goodwill (but don't expect to get it as your car is out of warrantee). Any assistance you can render will be of assistance. If any party (i.e. consumer affairs) please feel free to fwd them my contact details.

For your records: Car rego XMS820 (NSW)

120000 kms (@ purchase 14000, since last rebuild <5000).

DEALER - OTHER

Hi Sonny,

I had trouble with the same guys - they are located on Burwood Hwy. I took my Astra to their workshop to have a wheel alignment done and all was good. Anyway when my service was due at Booran Holden Dandenong I took it in and received a phone call 2 hours later. The guy at the service dep told me they could not get my wheels off to check the brakes which was part of the service.

I was furious, not only could I not have my service done properly but also it was inconveniencing me and my partner as we only use the one car. I took it back to Continental in Burwood and they had to bash the nut with a giant screw driver and hammer as it wouldn't budge and the other nuts well I don't even want to know how they got them off but they were on way too tight.

I accepted the apology but would never set foot in that place again. Pretend to be professional but just sit on their **** all day taking phone calls

"SUBARU WRX 1994: WHEEL ALIGNMENT AT EAST BURWOOD PENFOLD HOLDEN (CONTINENTAL) - I just want to warn others about my bad experience at Continental Tyres, East Burwood when I sent my car in for a wheel alignment.

After the wheel alignment had been done, the technician took my car for a "test" drive to check the alignment. I sensed trouble when he invited another of his workmates with him, both were grinning when they drove out the workshop.

When he returned, I checked the revs on my ECU and he had revved it to 5165 rpm. He also boosted it to maximum boost pressure at 1.03 bar. The knock sensor also recorded a knock value of 27. When questioned, he said he didn't expect boost to come in so early going up the hill!

I don't seem to understand why he had to test when the boost would come in when he only did the wheel alignment? Also to reach 5165 rpm, he had to have his foot flat on the floor to achieve that. I don't think it was necessary to test the performance of the car when all he did was the wheel alignment?

The biggest disappointment was when I requested for an alignment report of the car, I was told that they did not have one, and I had to request that before they started. They said they had to put the car back on the machine to check the settings. Without the report, I don't know what the current wheel alignment readings are and what was done to the vehicle.

Some people just don't have any respect for our pride and joy which we've spent not only money but also heaps of time. They just want to hop in, boot it and rev the **** out of it and enjoy at the expense of others."

It will probably have a faulty diode in the compressor clutch windings. Check that there is power at the plug on the compressor. If so then remove the belt, pulley and clutch unit. This can be done without de-gassing the AC.

Flick the small black cover off the clutch winding and solder a new diode in place. Make sure it is not too small or it will fail again, and installed the right way.

Common problem with Astra aircon is the compressor clutch electrical coil goes open circuit. This has happened to my TS Astra as well as my friends. Local auto aircon repair centre was repairing up to 5 a week where I live. Unfortunately to repair this involves removal of the compressor. A replacement clutch assembly is now available but not from Holden who wanted to replace the whole compressor in my case. ($800+) Hope this helps.

Holden Astra 2002 - absolute design debacle - ignition coil pack failed on our way to a wedding on the northern beaches from Blue Mountains at 3.30pm on a Friday afternoon. We had to limp to Parramatta Holden where we had to beg to have something done about the car. At that stage the car was still under warranty and it still cost me $600.

Air conditioner re-gassed twice in four years, third time, I was told the air conditioner needed to be replaced $900 thank you, due to air conditioner clutch failure!

Radio comes on when starting car full blast, don’t you love it 6am in the morning.

Ignition would not start whilst in car park at Penrith car park 8.30pm, car fully loaded with perishable foods, the shopping centre wants to close up, what do you do? - We managed to start the car after 1 hr through the grace of the almighty and no one else. New barrel replaced under warranty after a number of phone calls and my time.

Now, today, ignition failure for the second time with my son in Newcastle who has missed an appointment because of it and it looks as though we will have to put it on a flat top to bring back to Sydney, at what cost? Because this piece of **** cannot be started.

Just think of your daughter, 12 o'clock at night trying to get home in situation as above. Just to add, timing belt every 60,000 kms, what a joke, $700 a pop, thank you! Buy Japanese and you will not have your hand in your pocket. Holden offered us zero support bar the first barrel replacement. G'day.
I recently had a similar problem with the A/C on my 2001 Astra. Was quoted >$750 to get the electromagnetic clutch rebuilt, or more for a rebuilt compressor! Well I said bugger that, and looked on the net, and it brought me here.

I disassembled my clutch unit and found the diode you mentioned, tested it, seemed OK. There is a second inspection cover on the opposite side. Don’t think its user serviceable cos I had to break it to get it off.

Found a curious little resistor shaped component, found out it was a thermal fuse. Tested it for continuity, found it to be open circuited or 'blown'. Called SWE check, matched it, installed it (soldered it in due to being too big for both the retaining clip and original compartment) and she works a treat ... Cost me time and $30 for 10 fuses (minimum spend for public). Be-careful to match the temperature rating and try to get the current rating as close as possible.

That’s my success story, might go and buy a few cases to celebrate.

Um yeah buy Jap **** and you will have more problems not just a faulty ignition barrel, oh no buy this or that, who are you kidding.

All cars have their problems, most people think that a car is going to go forever and none of the parts will fail. Why do you think they have spare parts interpreters in dealerships ? To provide people with parts as nothing lasts forever.

Astra: Ignition Barrel, timing belt needs to be changed at 60,000km on old engine and 90,000km on updated engine, water pump, EGR valve, ecu...

Toyota Corolla: sludge build up in engine common problem with Toyota's and it's not from using cheap quality oil either. Starting problems, noisy clunky transmission, electric window motors play up...

There are a host of other problems for both cars but really they are both pretty reliable if you know what signs to look for before the problems occur. Also most service departments will know the common problems associated with your car so it doesn't hurt to ask what the common problems on your model are. It won’t mean your car’s a lemon because even the most expensive cars have problems.

Look after the car and don't expect the impossible out of it, after all it is mechanical...

Last week I got in the car to go to work and heard a rattling noise when starting the car. I switched off and called a mechanic who said it was a timing chain problem. I checked the government website and found no recalls had been made in Australia for this problem.

I have had exactly the same issue last week. My Zafira is serviced regularly. It has only done 66,000. One day it just wouldn't start and when the mechanic came to look at it he said the motor was gone. It had no oil and the timing chain was broken. I have been quoted $6500 to get a new motor. Apparently there are not many of these motors in AUS and they need to come in from the US. We are caught by the **** because there is no alternative but to get a new motor. I also think that Holden should have some responsibility.

I called the local dealership (Service Dept.) asked them if they had heard of this happening. They said they had heard of it but it wasn't that common and if I wanted to do something about it the dealership would need to replace the engine and then I could take it from there. My wife's 2001 Zafira failed to start and I had it towed to Booran Holden for repairs. The vehicle was bought from Booran Holden (used) had have had it serviced by Booran Holden regularly. They now tell me that the Timing Chain has broken and they are not liable as the vehicle is not under warranty. Holden wants A$ 5,500.00 to fix this.

Reading the reviews, seems as though this is a manufacturer’s defect, but they say they are not liable. With other cars, timing chains need replacement with the 100,000 km service, but not with the Zafira which is strange. If they were required to replace this during the 100,000 service I won't be in this situation. I think Holden should take some responsibility and do the right thing.

CLUTCH

Alan

If you look at the complaints you will see that the Navara STX diesel has clutch problems. I tow 2100kg van, I am having the third clutch put in this week. I have only towed the van a total of about 300K's and the car has done 7000k's.

So far Nissan have covered it under warranty, however there was a little resistance this time.

The engine has good pulling power, tows well and is economical.

Hi Allan, even if you have difficulty with the looks, for your own peace of mind take a Mitsubishi Triton for a test drive. The 3.2 diesel isn't as quiet as the Navara's 2.5 and on paper looks down on power and torque but the test is in the driving. I have a 3.2 Pajero auto and it is a rocket! If you do look at the Triton I'd go for the manual, the auto version unfortunately is not the magnificent 5 speed from the Paj, just a 4 speed and fairly ordinary so I've heard. Good Luck!

Hi Alan,

Do Not Do It. On paper these vehicles look great and I was suckered in to this trap. After finding this site I have unloaded my Navara, removed tool boxes, all tools and only tow a trailer to a work site when necessary. I have done 35,000km with only a couple problems but am now petrified after reading some of the other problems people are having. They are not built strong enough for Australian conditions and what a joke - they are rated to tow 3000kg's but many have clutch problems.

First gear is not low enough to tow 3000kg's particularly on an up hill start where riding the clutch is required on an already weak clutch. They are also very heavy on fuel when towing. Do not believe the **** Nissan spin on the economy. It is all a ****. Expect to use 20% more fuel generally.

Hope this changes your mind.

I had a Nissan Patrol (GQ Model) and had gear oil fumes. Turned out it was the breather pipe, it was close to the firewall and near where air enters the air vents - i.e. comes into the cabin. A slight modification - moved the breather pipe and put a cap on it - and all fixed. I too had a few months of head scratching before finding out what it was. Hope your problem is as easy a fix as this.

Contact WA consumer affairs department (DOCEP) & ask to speak to Adrian, he has a file 2 feet thick on KIA engine failures. Their phone number is 9282 0777. If Adrian is not available ask to speak to a person called Des his direct number is 9282 4343. DOCEP WA are weeks away from taking KIA to task about these engines.

Ask KIA Wangara to put in a formal out of warranty good will submission to KIA Motors Australia. They will try to fob you off with you are wasting your time etc. Don't accept this, insist that they put in this formal request. KIA Motors will tell you, you should have followed this process they will use this as an excuse to reject your claim.

KIA will also use the excuse your vehicle wasn't serviced by a KIA dealer so you have no claim. This is illegal under the trade practice act "Third Line Forcing" provisions. So don't accept this rubbish.

KIA Motors address in WA is 177 Star Street Carlisle. They look forward to consumers popping in for a coffee & a chat (NOT). The phone Number for them is 9355 1711 (You will never find this in a phone book).

Reply back to me & I can forward more info to assist you. But as I am away from my office computer that has all this info for a couple of weeks it won't be till after Australia Day 27-01-09. Reply after 20-01-2009 as my Hotmail address will clear the mail box over 10 days which is where all reply emails go.

Don't ring KIA's 1300 customer service number, this is manned by a customer service company called Monodial whose sole job is to get rid of you.

Don't repair your vehicle until you give KIA the opportunity to inspect it & give you a formal knock back.

Hi David, I read with interest your "Astra" posting Jan 2009.

This car I refer to has 85,000 kms and up to this point hasn't caused too much grief. 3 months ago the electronics failed (power steering and ABS) and it was diagnosed as the Alternator which was replaced. No problems for some 8 weeks and then (and it seems to happen when the weather is warm and the air con is on) - Air con dies, Radio goes on and off, lights dim, power steering fails.

I was just wondering if you had any of the above and if so did you sought the problems. The Auto Electrician has not been able to establish the cause - I would appreciate any assistance if you can.

ISSUE:
DEALER - USED CAR

We purchased a vehicle from Riverview Carsales in Lawnton Qld. We found it on carsales advertised for $15,990 which we thought was a good deal. When we got to the car yard the dealer said that it had been advertised at the wrong price, which was the fault of his other carsales man and that it was really $16,990. After arguing the point for some time we agreed to pay that price after he agreed to throw in 12 months rego. We signed the contract and took delivery of the vehicle.

Everything was fine for 6 weeks then we started having a few little problems so I took it to a mechanic to have a full check done. The mechanic found $2,500 worth of work to be done most of which is under warranty, some not. The work that needs doing is because the vehicle hadn’t been serviced properly, as the dealer promised it had been. I contacted him to organise an inspection, he was rude, abrupt and a complete **** so I contacted Fair Trading.

Upon contacting Fair Trading, I checked that I had all my paper work and realised that the **** hadn’t "thrown in the rego". He had snuck it in on top of all the other costs, so I paid for the rego as well! He **** to fair trading about what had happened between us and agreed to inspect the vehicle. Now that he has dragged it out long enough, he is claiming he no longer is responsible for the warranty work as the warranty has expired.

The man is a **** and I would strongly advise Against purchasing a vehicle from him.

I have a Kia Carnival LS purchased in May 2005. I noticed that prior to going away for 2 weeks it started losing a little power in the first couple of minutes in the morning. The car was garaged while we were away and coming home from the airport I noticed the tappets were very noisy. I checked the oil and it was at the max level. Drove about a km up the road and bang... it just cut out.

Had it towed home as it was late at night and then towed to my mechanic in the morning only to be told the engine will have to be replaced. I have a 2005 Carnival LS as well. Went fine then it started to make a knocking noise at 48500 kms when going on holiday to QLD. Took it to a Kia dealership and was told it’s not going anywhere as I found out that the 2005 model has a lot of problems with it. The first thing the mechanics said not another Carnival. They think it’s the bottom end of the block and we are looking at $6000 to $10000 to have a new motor put in as it just ran out of the manufacture warranty in Dec 08 (car died on 15/01/09). That’s if it can’t be fixed, if it can $4000 in parts then add labour on top of that was well.

We rang Kia, they are rude and will not help or admit that there is a problem with the motor. Also found out it’s the same motor as the 2003 model that has a lot of problems but don’t quote me on that as I’m not sure myself if it’s the same. Best advice to give you take it to fair-trading then if all fails go public (ACA or Today Tonight). That’s what we will be doing. Like a lot of people we did our research into the car and was told that all the past problems were fixed and was mislead. What’s even better for us is the dealership extended warranty we got is now voided as they went into receivership. So we have a big fight ahead of us to get it fixed.

Also what was it a new or demo, if it was new what year did you get it. We bought ours in 03/08/06 and Kia says it’s out of warranty. When ours suppose to run out on the 08/09, don’t know how Kia came up with that (that’s got me ?) so called 3 year 100,000km warranty? Like to hear how you go. Best advice once it is fixed get rid of it. I’m going back to Toyota for a family car (better customer care in the past).

I have a Toyota Aurion Pressaras.

At 37000ks and after a long trip to the country (Broken Hill, the road which is not highway, but not too bad) the car has developed a "thud" whenever I go over a hump - when one side of the car is over the hump first, i.e. when there is a twisting motion in the body.

The dealer can't locate the problem but tells me that I might have to pay for it if they have to spend any more time on it. I have yet to contact the Toyota customer service.

Any one else have any similar problems?

By the way, there was a leak at one of the front shocks, but that was replaced promptly. I might have got a lemon.

Noticed that there was a posting on road noise. I must say that my Camry 2003 model was quieter and I am a bit disappointed with this one as I paid a lot more money for it. I put the noise down to the 17" wheel with semi low profile tyres, which means that the tyre pressure is up to 32-35. Ride is harder too.
