FORD TERRITORY SY TS 2005: WATER IN TRANSMISSION *FEEDBACK WANTED* |
||
ISSUE: |
Can anyone advise if transmission failure occurs in Territory models as happens in BA Fords as they have the same trans & radiator (Ford will not admit fault in either model). |

========== REPLY ========== Haven’t heard of it happening in the Territory range, I know that the BA's affected in my area were covered by the local Ford dealer. POSTED BY: BILL - BRISBANE, QLD - AUS 29 FEB 2008 ========== REPLY ========== Different radiator setup, however the transmission is the same. Put an external transmission cooler just in case! POSTED BY: CHRIS - MARYBOROUGH , QLD - AUS 2 MAR 2008 ========== REPLY ========== Hi Darryl, I have not seen a Territory trans cooler fail. BA's are a different matter. "If" you fit an external cooler, get a decent sized one and bypass any in radiator cooler. When you connect the hoses up to the new cooler, make sure you connet the inlet to the bottom connector (same as it was on the original cooler). Dav POSTED BY: L DAVIS - BOMADERRY, NSW - AUS 2 MAR 2008 ========== REPLY ========== I have a SY TS and it emptied the conents of its transmission all over my driveway. Had to be towed back to the dealer. I was told that the union fitting on one of the cooling lines had failed. The dealer was good with the repair. Up to that point I was not 100% happy with the gearbox, it appeared very harsh to me. I do some towing (1500 kg boat). At each service I would complain about the harsh shifting (up and down), they would reset the computer and / or update the software and it would be OK for a month then slowly become harsh again. I had the dealer fit a Ford external transmission cooler and the gearbox has never been better, and has stayed good. POSTED BY: WAYNE LACEY - SYDNEY, NSW - AUS 5 MAR 2008 ========== REPLY ========== I've just ordered a new Territory & after much research & knowledge of Falcon transmissions I wouldn't be without a trans cooler. It's a $790(gulp) option at my local dealer but well worth it especially if you’re towing. For those buying a Territory/Falcon add the trans cooler onto your final price but don't be without it! POSTED BY: DARREN - ADELAIDE, SA - AUS 6 MAR 2008 ========== REPLY ========== Fitting a PWR cooler in place on the BA's solves the problem. Should be no more than $350 fitted at the most, any good transmission place (or Ford dealer) can do it. I’ve found from personal experience the PWR coolers to be the best for the BA's (just my opinion). POSTED BY: BILL - BRISBANE, QLD - AUS 9 MAR 2008 ========== REPLY ========== FORD BA 2003 - This car will be the end of me. On my way to school without any previous warning the overheating light began to flash and smoke began to bellow out from the front bonnet. I pulled aside to discover that there was a foamy milky liquid spilling out of the coolant system. The car had to be towed for the transmission oil and water had mixed. I have had the system flushed twice and a new radiator put in but the problem keep appearing every time the car is taken for a long drive. Apart from the stress I have spent over a $1000, money which I do not have. Please anyone out there if you have had the same problem and have had it fixed email me. The mechanic just keeps flushing things out for me and not to mention slapping a fee every time they do it. I need help; this car problem is killing me mentally and financially. It is a problem that needs to be fixed by Ford but will they? Richard and Marilyn POSTED BY: RICHARD - SYDNEY, NSW - AUS 19 APR 2008 ========== REPLY ========== Just spoke to tranny expert about 03 BA tranny (same story ... water in tranny). Water melts bonding agent to bands. Gearbox ****. Cost including fitting of oil cooler $3350.00. Thanks Mr. Ford - will never happen! POSTED BY: NORM CROUCH - BILOELA, QLD - AUS 22 MAY 2008 ========== REPLY ========== I had a problem after travelling on corrugated roads. Something fractured in the radiator and engine coolant flowed into the transmission. Ford was very good and re-built the transmission under warranty, however I am a little concerned that it may happen again. POSTED BY: DAVE - BUNBURY, WA - AUS 17 NOV 2008 ========== REPLY ========== I note other replies re same in BA's. I had BA XR Turbo same thing happened - because faulty brazing in radiator where transmission oil cooler pipe is run thru it. Did you have transmission fluid in engine coolant as well? If so it is essential that every rubber hose in coolant system is changed "including the hard to get at heater hoses under dash". Why? Because the transmission fluid softens and eventually rots out the hoses. I know as it happened to me. It blew the smallest / hottest hose first - the one that is in line to turbo cooling (a short bit of hose about 3 inches long). They should also change the Plastic radiator overflow / header tank as it was also contaminated. They changed all this on my BA when I got down and insisted on it. If you are in rural area you do not want blown hoses in high summer heat! MK POSTED BY: M KNIGHT - VICTORIA POINT, QLD - AUS 20 DEC 2008 ========== REPLY ========== The best thing to do is buy a Toyota / Honda / Nissan most of the best cars in Australia are from Japan. All cars have problems but you see more old Toyota getting a round than any thing. You must service your car to keep them alive, every 10 000km or 6 months. If you choose to ignore this your car will become toast soon. Hopefully I'm not too late. POSTED BY: CLEMENT - LOCATION & EMAIL NOT SUPPLIED 26 MAR 2008 ========== REPLY ========== Kia had a problem with their engines in this model and they do make a new short engine pretty cheap. ========== ORIGINAL POSTING ========== "HOLDEN ASTRA 2003: SHORT LIFE OF ASTRA BRAKE PADS AND ROTORS - We just put the car in for its 30,000 klm service. We bought brand new so we do know its full history and I admit that car is 4 years old but is driven sedately and only needs filling up with petrel about once every 3 to weeks. The total cost of this service is over $2100. The dealer claimed that both front and rear brakes needed to be done as including replacing all 4 rotors. We find that very strange for a car that is still on its original set of tyres! Additionally the air conditioning died a couple of days ago and we are being told that the Compressor has a hole in it and had to be replaced. Has any one else know of this problem with the brakes having what I think is extreme premature wear. Thanks" POSTED BY: BRENDEN WARE - LOGAN, QLD - AUS 27 FEB 2008 ========== REPLY ========== All common Astra problems. Be prepared to pay out that sort of money every 30K. Oh and add another $1500 on the 60K service for timing belt and other assorted parts. There are always aftermarket parts that will be about half the price, if you want to go down that road. And wait till your window motors, computer, dash etc etc etc start to fail. Sorry, it only gets worse. Mark. POSTED BY: MARK KURAN - MELBOURNE, VIC - AUS 27 FEB 2008 ========== REPLY ========== Our Astra has done 54,000K. New rear window motor, significant problems with keys starting and central locking system, new air conditioning pump. Currently have a large problem with pulling away, large gap between accelerating and moving forward, I am sure this will be expensive. POSTED BY: GEOFF - MELBOURNE, VIC - AUS 26 JUL 2008 ========== REPLY ========== I have a 2000 TS Astra now has over 300,000km - yes pads and discs at 75,000 but put in after market and not touched them since. Also two window electric winder, one early the other just went. Also coil card played up but got it under warranty after some complaining. Yes timing belt at 120,000km but after checking several dealers found prices vary a lot, one fitted by mechanic and one myself. POSTED BY: RICK - BRANXTON, NSW - AUS 4 NOV 2008 ========== REPLY ========== Holden Astra 2000 CD 56,000K - brakes and rotors were replaced very early. One window motor recently and lots of problems with expensive electrics. POSTED BY: PETER - PERTH, WA - AUS 4 FEB 2009 ========== REPLY ========== Astra brakes are soft euro standard, they will need to be replaced around 40 to 60k. The best thing to do is take the car to a small workshop who use Aussie made or Japan made rotors and bendix ct or heavy duty pads for some. Have them fitted, some I do last twice as long with normal driving. The price is normally about 550 to 600 to do an Astra all round. POSTED BY: TODD - IPSWICH, QLD - AUS 6 AUG 2009 |

TOYOTA COROLLA SECA ASCENT 2004: TOYOTA COROLLA - SOUTH AFRICAN VS JAPANESE MODELS *COMPLAINT* |
||
ISSUE: |
I recently took my car for its 50,000km service (it has only done 43,000km), and was informed that the rotors (discs) needed replacing. After querying how this has happened in such a new car, I have discovered that the South African model contains parts that do not last as long as the Japanese/Australian model. I personally know that other Corollas a year older than mine and at nearly 80,000 km have not had these particular parts replaced as yet. Toyota is therefore selling same model cars containing different components of differing standard. |

========== REPLY ========== Easy way to tell, if the first letter of the vin/chassis number is a J, it is the Jap model. I think South Africa model start with an A, could be wrong. Germany is W, Australia is 6, Italy is Z, USA is 1, Korea K and Thailand is M, UK is S. POSTED BY: ANDREW - SYDNEY, NSW 2/3/2008 ========== REPLY ========== I also bought a 2003 Toyota Corolla brand new. Just took it in for the 50,000 service 7/4/08 and was told that the rotor disks need replacing and brakes. I questioned why these needed replacing with only 46,000kl on the clock and was told it was because of wear and tear. I mentioned that I had never had this problem with any other car before even though they had far greater klm. Had rear brakes replaced at 30,000 and was told it was due to inferior materials from South Africa. This was done under warranty. Will be following up further. ========== REPLY ========== I’m not 100 % sure but is there a soft cover over your hand brake lever, lift it off and there could be an adjustment point there. Some times underneath the car in the middle, most late cars are adjusted at the rear wheels. POSTED BY: RAY - ADELAIDE, SA - AUS 27 FEB 2008 ========== REPLY ========== Handbrake adjuster is located in the rear rotor/drum. As far as I remember there might be a second adjustment point in the handbrake lever. Hope it helps. POSTED BY: DANIEL - BRISBANE, QLD - AUS 2 MAR 2008 ========== REPLY ========== The handbrake on our 2004 Camry Altese has been adjusted twice by mechanics, the second time was by Toyota workshop who charged 120.00 to do. They said the previous bloke did a bad job and they had to pull it apart and fix it properly. Well the handbrake faded away yet again 2 months later and so I had a go myself and adjusted it at the back wheels and from the hand lever using a Camry manual for info, and it held for about a month and then it became useless again. About to take it back to Toyota to fix again for rego inspection. I hope they fix it properly this time or maybe it is one of those problems that require a recall of all Camry's to fix. These are a cupped plug designed to seal engine blocks and manifolds. They are readily available from auto parts stores like Autopro, Repco, SuperCheap etc. You will need to accurately measure the ID of the hole to get the correct size. A hard setting jointing paste is needed on assembly, available from same place as plug. Dav... POSTED BY: L DAVIS - BOMADERY, NSW 28/2/2008 ========== REPLY ========== Take the manifold off. From Renault dealer requires new gearbox at cost of nearly $6000. Additionally has badly worn rear coupling - from Renault, cost includes rear tail shaft - $2000+. This vehicle has only ever done long travel distances & is only on second set of tyres. I find it unbelievable that any vehicle of such reputed 'quality' could be worth little more than dump value after only 168,000km. And what is Renault's response, to 2 emails to their national customer relations? Absolutely nothing! I am very keen to know of any others with similar problems." POSTED BY: JON HOLCOMBE - UTUNGUN, ACT - AUS 4 APR 2007 ========== REPLY ========== Thankfully my Renault Scenic burnt out completely from fuel pipe failure. Actually no, 40000km, the petrol cap broke off; engine mountings broke off at 65000; the propshaft fell off at 77000km; brakes nearly failed. If this car is unsafe Renault should remove it from the market. The after sales service stinks. I am a single mother with two children and when the propshaft gave in I was stuck in a deserted farm area. And their attitude is if you don’t want to pay for it to be repaired come and tow it away! This car is unsafe and because it has no value I cannot afford to pay in R30 000 to get rid of the rubbish (wish mine would also catch fire). I am desperate and nobody to assist me. Renault head office trying but to no avail. I am now hiring a car and this car is just costing me more the longer I keep it. Dealers have told me to stay away (I called dealerships under the pretence of wanting to buy one privately and didn’t want to make a mistake) if this is the case they should take it off the market. Stay Away From Renault in POSTED BY: RENEE WRIGHT - NORTHCLIFF, SOUTH AFRICA 26/7/2007 ========== REPLY ========== I own a Renault Scenic Rx4 2001, only done 106,000 km. I got into the car one day to find I could not get reverse gear, all other gears are ok. Couldn’t believe the quote is over $6,000. It’s still sitting in the driveway. I have had other problems with this car, tail shaft went last month, still paying off that bill. Annette" POSTED BY: ANNETTE TATUM - BLUE MOUNTAINS, NSW 18/8/2007 ========== REPLY ========== Our Renault has done 106 000 kms, we just went on holiday and lost 5th gear. Our mechanic in Tassie was told that Renault has provided an upgrade kit for this failure and believes that it is a manufacturing fault. Renault have denied all knowledge and have refused our goodwill claim after leaving us stuck in tassie for 4 weeks with no car and a bill just to look 'but not touch'it. We also lost our petrol cap at about 60 000 kms. This car is unsafe, not built for Australian conditions and Renault couldn’t care less. POSTED BY: BEC - GUNGAHLIN, ACT 24/1/2008 ========== REPLY ========== Hi Jon I know it's been a while since you wrote your report on your Reno RX4 Gearbox but I have just had the same problem at almost identical km's. I live in the small country town of Beechworth, maybe 4,000 people and there is one other RX4 in town and guess what - yep they had to get a new gearbox. It's definitely a design fault as far as I am concerned. Have you had any more luck from Reno. I believe we could create quite a storm if we combined our stories and sent them to RACV, Wheels Magazine etc. You buy a supposed quality product and this happens, pathetic. I was told I was one of the first to have this trouble because I had travelled so much further than city dwellers. There could be literally hundreds of these vehicles heading into Reno for a new gearbox in the next 12 months. Reno even had a gearbox in Australia obviously realising the problem was going to reoccur. I think I'll start working on a letter to bring this "design fault" to the publics notice. Are you "over it" or are you interested in adding your voice of protest? Chris POSTED BY: CHRIS MAGENNIS - BEECHWORTH, VIC 2/2/2008 ========== REPLY ========== You should follow the Kia Carnival saga on this site. I am prepared to collate all this information and present it to Renault Australia to hopefully evoke a positive response from them. If no reasonable response is garnered I will forward all info to A Current Affair and/or federal consumer affairs for action. I will inform Renault of Our intentions as part of the letter. LANDROVER DISCOVERY 1999: RE: ABS MODULATOR FAILURE (ARE YOUR ABS/TC/HDC LIGHTS ON?) *ADVICE* |

ISSUE: |
I too have had the three amigos problem after I bought my 1999 Landrover Discovery Series 2 second hand. I was also getting the run around about what is the cause of this "phenomenon". So I decided to look into it myself, gathered all the info I could, both technical and on various forums and armed with some instruments i.e. a multimeter etc, I proceeded to pull my car apart. |

========== ORIGINAL POSTING ========== "LANDROVER DISCOVERY 2 1999: ABS MODULATOR FAILURE (ARE YOUR ABS/TC/HDC LIGHTS ON?) - Landrover Discovery 2 owners, Recently I have joined you in the ABS modulator issue. I was slowing for a light when the 3 little lights (ABS/TC/HDC) appeared on the dash. Once stopped, I re-started the engine and the lights were no longer there. Approximately a week later they re-appeared. I took the car to a LR service centre and was advised to replace the modulator. ($3000 to $4000) NB: They did however say that although this seems to be a Very common problem in this model, it was not one that would stop me from driving the car. They said the brakes are still usable however the ABS will not work and the brakes may not feel right. After researching this issue throughout the internet, it has come to my attention that thousands of LR owners are faced with this exact issue. NB: LR service centres will try to say that there could be an array of issues causing the lights to appear on the dash. Although this may be true, all the issues suggested relate back to a faulty ABS modulator. It is a simple fact that the ABS modulators in Landrover’s are faulty. Please email me if you are having the same issue. I believe Landrover should be helping us (repairing faulty modulators) and would like to take this to consumer affairs with a large group of LRD2 owners to show how big an issue this is. Personally I don't feel safe in a car that is showing ABS warning lights. (NB: In the owner’s manual, the response to this warning light is to stop the car immediately and call your service centre - that's all well and good, but will they help!) Hope to hear from you! Alister " POSTED BY: ALISTER WRIGHT - MELBOURNE, VIC - AUS 11 AUG 2007 ========== REPLY ========== I have a 1999 Landrover Discovery, at approx. 60,000 km my 3 lights started coming on and Landrover would not fix the problem either. Just gave me the same story. Rover Parts in Victoria told me a new shuttle valve switch would fix the problem. They took my money; the new switch didn’t make any difference. When I rang them back the girl said they would ring me back, never did. I wish I never bought the car. I have done only 110,000km and repaired both auto lines the radiator, water pump, injector harnness, fuel pressure regulator, one original air suspension bag and 20,000km later another new bag. I hope you have better luck. POSTED BY: MARK DALLINGER - COOLANGATTA, QLD 13/8/2007 ========== REPLY ========== I own a 2002 Discovery and to my dismay I have discovered the three amigos problem as well TC ABS and down hill lights. I took car to dealer and was told ABS module was bad. After researching on computer we are totally being taken advantage of by Landrover. This is so common that a recall is definitely in order. This can happen at any time during the life of our cars. I saw where it happened during our normal 4 year warranty during 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. When it happens during warranty nobody cares so we will have to fight harder for any satisfaction .They should be ashamed that we have to spend a lot of money to put our families into a car which has a braking system with a high rate of failure. Thanks Shaun POSTED BY: SHAUN FULLER - YONKERS, NY USA 17/8/2007 ========== REPLY ========== I've had the "3 amigos" problem on my 2003 LR Discovery II with 45,000 miles for about 2 months now. Took it to the dealer last week and they suggested a new ABS modulator for 3200. This included 500 for a new switch of some sort for the right front wheel. They showed me the diagnosis which pointed to some shuttle valves in the ABS switch. I've done some research and in 2006 LR provided a shuttle valve repair kit SWO500030. I'm still trying to find out if this was to address the ABS modulator problem. I have to believe that the problem is NOT life threatening if LR hasn't issued a recall. I also have to believe that if someone has an accident and the modulator is shown to be the culprit there will be a rapid recall. Research on the internet shows a lot of people like us in the same circumstances with lack of a concise resolution to the problem. I'll be happy to help in any way I can. I'm still looking for a resolution and my try a few inexpensive things on my own 1st. Keep you posted. Mark POSTED BY: MARK FERDINAND - FORT MYERS, FLORIDA USA 22/8/2007 ========== REPLY ========== I had this problem for quite some time; the cause on my Disco was that the brake pads were changed without changing the disks. The disks are designed to be changed when the pads are changed, they are not expensive. If you do not change the disks the pads ride up on the ridges on the disks for a long time and confuses the braking system, this may get better as the pads wear in to match the disks but it will generally still happen intermittently. Change your disks and pads and I am sure you will see the end of it. POSTED BY: JOHN JACKMAN - PERTH, WA 23/8/2007 ========== REPLY ========== I had these lights come on. It was caused by a blown stop light fuse (blown by a dodgy hire trailer). New fuse fixed it. POSTED BY: ANDREW - MELBOURNE, VIC 31/8/2007 ========== REPLY ========== Alistair, I have the same problem with my 1999 Series II TD5. It is however very intermittent. The suggestion by one person on the discussion site that it is associated with new brake pads is not so in my case, as it was many months between fitting of new pads and the problem appearing. Regards, POSTED BY: NICK - BRISBANE, QLD 15/9/2007 ========== REPLY ========== I too have a 2001 Disco II. I have owned it for 2 years "The Three Amigos" have been an intermittent problem until recently. Now they stay on errantly. I would gladly join this cause to bring this problem back to where it came from ... Land Rover. I agree after reading dozens of similarly frustrated LR owners complaints its time Land Rover took care of our problems because they are from Their faulty braking system. POSTED BY: GLEN WOODS - ALTA LOMA, CA, USA 7/10/2007 ========== REPLY ========== I too have had the ABS failure problem with my Landrover Discovery II. I have been told by the dealer that the only solution is to replace the shuttle valve unit at a cost of nearly $4000. The problem seems to be intermittent and unpredictable. I recently towed a caravan with the car and in 300 Kms the problem did not occur, yet it occurred immediately the car was driven without the van. I am reluctant to spend the money to repair the fault as I suspect that it may be caused by a sensor rather than the modulator. The experience of the writer who found the problem still there after replacing the unit deepens my suspicion. I agree that a scan of the internet confirms that this is a world wide problem which Landrover has been **** in the hope that we will all pay up and shut up. I obviously made a mistake in ignoring the long standing complaints about the build quality of Landrover. I am very disappointed that the company refuses to acknowledge that they sold **** vehicles. I was initially very pleased with my car but I now understand why all my associates said I was crazy not to buy a Toyota. POSTED BY: ROBERT ADAMS - SYDNEY, NSW 17/10/2007 ========== REPLY ========== I have the same problem with my '98 Freelander. The first time the lights came on was a couple of years ago. Land Rover fixed the problem when it was being serviced and it was fine for a while. However a few months ago the HDC/ABS/TC lights came back on and, with the exception of a 2 or 3 week reprieve after a recent service, the lights appear to be back for good. I'd love to know if there is an inexpensive way to fix the problem. POSTED BY: JOHN ILINCIC - SYDNEY, NSW 24/11/2007 ========== REPLY ========== Can’t agree more! I have a Freelander 1.8 petrol and have had 4 warning lights on for 3 years. I took the problem to the garage who sold it and they tried to hide the problem. On further checks I was told that it is the Engine Management System that was faulty. When I am driving it dies out on me and then kicks back in. I feel like dumping it in a wrecker’s yard. To fix the issue would cost a lot of money that I can’t afford? I will advise anyone against buying Landrover, they are expensive nightmares. If any one can help or give pointers to where I can go it would be appreciated. POSTED BY: BILLY PATERSON - SYDNEY, NSW, AUS 19/12/2007 ========== REPLY ========== I too have the same problem with the three amigo's coming on. It started intermittently but now they’re on all the time. There are way too many instances and complaints for Land Rover to ignore. They have to issue a recall notice for this problem. It’s only a matter of time before there is a real failure and someone is either seriously injured or killed. POSTED BY: JULIO - HOLSWORTHY, NSW 27/3/2008 |

HOLDEN ASTRA 2003: SHORT LIFE OF ASTRA BRAKE PADS AND ROTORS *FEEDBACK WANTED* |
||
ISSUE: |
We just put the car in for its 30,000 klm service. |

There are always aftermarket parts that will be about half the price, if you want to go down that road. And wait till your window motors, computer, dash etc etc etc start to fail. These Astras are lemons... POSTED BY: CARL SMITH - ADELAIDE, SA - AUS 29 FEB 2008 ========== REPLY ========== Brenden, Common problem with all European vehicles. A lot of newer local models also have this problem. It’s normally too hard of a pad or too soft of a rotor. DBA Rotors and Bendix Pads are the way to solve the problem. Cheers POSTED BY: DANIEL - BRISBANE, QLD - AUS 2 MAR 2008 ========== REPLY ========== Most local mechanics should be able to change all rotors and discs for under $1000 (inc labour). DBA rotors are around $125 each, and a set of four pairs of Bendix pads for less than $200. I get over 60k from this combination with normal driving. Had my car since new in '99 and it's still going great. There's a Huge amount of TS Astra parts available from wreckers in Oz now, as well as many online stores in the UK selling new Vauxhall Astra parts for less than half (including shipping) of what Holden charges for them. Email me for any assistance sourcing TS Astra parts, as I hate seeing people getting ripped off by mechanics and dealers. POSTED BY: DAVID - SYDNEY, NSW - AUS 17 MAR 2008 ========== REPLY ========== Our Astra has done 54,000K. POSTED BY: RICK - BRANXTON, NSW - AUS 4 NOV 2008 ========== REPLY ========== Astra TS CD 2002 owner – bought brand new and now has 80,000 klms on it. The brakes are still fine. The CD came with ABS which gives you much bigger rotors and pads (that’s the way to go). Only problem in six years has been the ignition lock which was replaced three years ago. Otherwise the vehicle has performed great. I have always run the car on premium fuel (good for the cat converter); never started the engine with the A/C switched on (too much stress); changed oil 3 times a year (good for motor – no sludge build-up); replaced cam belt at 60,000 (just to be sure); and used top quality iridium spark plugs (burns fuel more efficiently). So I can say I’m a happy Astra owner… Intend to keep for another 2/3 years. POSTED BY: CUSTER - BRISBANE, QLD - AUS 6 NOV 2008 ========== REPLY ========== Holden Astra 2000 CD 56,000K - brakes and rotors were replaced very early. One window motor recently and lots of problems with expensive electrics. POSTED BY: PETER - PERTH, WA - AUS 4 FEB 2009 ========== REPLY ========== Me and my Missus have had our Astra for nearly 3 1/2 years now. She's done 77,000km and has not gave us a single problem, oil is changed regularly and services done when needed . I hear all these stories about air con packing up. I think most of you people expect too much from your cars that complain. You are most likely starting your car with the air con on and do not turn it off when turning the car off. Big deal timing belt needs to be changed every 60,000km for old engine and 90,000km for new. Just get it checked every now and then, all cars have mechanical parts and nothing lasts forever. We are both happy Astra owners and love our AH CDXi Astra. It hasn't let us down yet and we have completed 2 very long trips up and down to Adelaide in it without a problem. POSTED BY: ADRIAN - ENDEAVOUR HILLS, VIC - AUS 5 FEB 2009 ========== REPLY ========== Astra brakes are soft euro standard, they will need to be replaced around 40 to 60k.

========== REPLY ========== The ST turbo diesel Patrol, having faith in Nissan we bought the car of our dreams and were to get many of years service out of it. We have since found out that we brought a lemon. We have had the pistons, fuel injectors and the turbo replaced in the last 5 months. We live out on a station with three small children. You expect to buy a car that has reliability and honesty from the car company's especially when your spending over $35,000 +. We are very disappointed customers, I have written to them regarding this issue. They reviewed our request and regrettably advise that we are unable to assist us financially with the repair to our vehicle. Does any one know whether these vehicles were recalled in America & Australia choose not to recall them? Don’t you think its time to take some action? As I have read that many complaints, something should be done. Cheers, Shaneo POSTED BY: SHANE ROWE - CARRIETON, SA 26/2/2008 ========== REPLY ========== G'day. I have just paid approx $19'000.00 to have the blown engine in my 2000 3 Litre Patrol replaced. This vehicle has a perfect service history & had only travelled 118'000 Kms & is a family vehicle that occasionally does some very easy beach driving. The first feedback I got from Nissan in regards to my asking for financial assistance was met with them requesting the invoice for the work done to get my Patrol back on the road & my full service history which I sent through & also faxed. I then received a letter from Nissan which stated that because my vehicle was eight years old & had done over 100'000 kms they will give me no financial assistance. I questioned Nissan on where does it tell you in the Service Manual that there is an age or distance traveled that is in fact an expiry date for this vehicle even though I have met All Required Service Intervals. I have since had correspondence from Nissan & they are now offering me $3000.00. My argument to Nissan is that this & many other 3litre Turbo Diesels have had the exact same failure with Nissan being fully aware of the fault within the Engine Design from manufacture which unfortunately has only being admitted over the phone & not on paper - should ask for copy of recorded calls! I am amazed of how many Patrols have failed in this manner & Nissan are quite happy to have the "all care & no responsibility attitude". I asked & emailed asking for the Manager of Nissan Australia & have being told that cases like mine get dealt with at a customer relations level & to this point I have not being given any of the contact details I have requested. I will pursue this further as it is obvious Nissan’s moral & ethics are pushed to the side for profit. Thanks, Marc POSTED BY: MARC - SINGLETON, NSW 6 AUG 2008 |

HOLDEN VECTRA CD 1999: RE: SPECTRE OF THE VECTRA *REPLY* |

========== ORIGINAL POSTING ========== "HOLDEN VECTRA 1999: SPECTRE OF THE VECTRA - I bought a 1999 Holden Vectra from a local dealer about a year ago and it has been a living nightmare ever since. First of all it sprang a bad oil leak in the top of the engine which they fixed. Less than two months later the timing chain went and the water pump. The extended warranty covered the timing chain but I paid $150 odd for the pump. The car was still using a lot of oil, then it started hemorrhaging oil when the head gasket went. I had to pay $1100 for this as it was not covered. I was about to sell the car the following week when I realised that it was still using oil at the rate of half a litre per week. I have booked the car in to have the rings replaced next week (this is the Holden mechanic's explanation for the oil consumption - in fact he's implying they were stuffed from the start) but I am not convinced the problems are going to go away. The extended warranty will cover $1000 but I will have to pay at least $1500 on top. What is really freaking me out though is today when I topped up the oil I noticed oil leaking out of the front of the engine where it was before. Looks like the head gasket has gone again. Can someone offer me any advice about what to do here? I feel like the mechanic is stonewalling my concerns and it feels like I am throwing good money after bad again. Does the car need a new engine? If they're putting in new rings will it cost much more to have the head gasket replaced again? Help!" POSTED BY: JAKE - BALLINA, NSW, AUS 15/2/2008 ========== REPLY ========== Don't worry the cylinder head has to be removed to replace the piston rings. POSTED BY: GARY V - MELBOURNE, VIC 15/2/2008 ========== REPLY ========== No 1999 Vectra has a timing chain. All models until C series 2.2 had belts. If your belt failed i.e. snapped you would have been the only person in the world to have not bent valves and done other top end damage. The top end oil leak on these engines is nearly always just the cam cover gasket, a simple fix. If the belt did snap you could have damaged valve guides and damaged pistons causing the oil usage problem. These engines when looked after are bullet proof but unfortunately people don’t take any notice of service intervals and the biggest problem that initially caused the idle control valves to fail, over filling with oil. My Vectra is now 10 years old and is the best car I have owned. I have done all my own servicing since new and other than wear and tear items it has been totally reliable. POSTED BY: GRAHAM DENT - SUTHERLAND, NSW 18/2/2008 ========== REPLY ========== Hi Ernie, I decided in the end to ditch the car and traded it in for an obvious loss to a dealer for an old Camry. I just couldn't spend more thousands on an engine I could no longer trust. It seems wherever I go all I hear is how bad Vectra quality is. Perhaps Graham is right: if they're perfectly looked after they're Ok but if the car you buy is a lemon no amount of servicing will save you - you have to buy another engine. Good luck with it. The hardest one was the speedo would drop off to zero and a number of the warning lights on the dash would come on, the fault was intermittent and it was really hard for a mechanic to find the fault ... ended up being a very simple fix. It turns out that the alternator was sending out a spike in the voltage every now and again which would throw the instrumentation into turmoil for a while. ========== ORIGINAL POSTING ========== "PEUGEOT 306 XR 1996: SEEKING A RELIABLE HONEST REPAIRER - OR HOW LONG IS A PIECE OF STRING ? - I love my little 306, it finds car parks that SUVs simply can't dream of, can maneuver zippily through heavy traffic and is quite fuel efficient. It has however run into a few needy repairs of late one being a new window cable, additional repairs to the automatic window motor and a new door lock. So, I took it to Trivett at Alexandria. $900 later it was repaired, then about 8 months after the repair the internal workings of the door lock fell in so I took it back to be repaired under warranty. 1 1/2 yrs later the lock fell in again. The quote for repairs, incidentally everything they supposedly replaced with new parts $880. Now don't get me wrong but wouldn't you expect a brand new door lock and barrel to last more than 1 1/2yrs? Why am being asked to pay for someone else poor workmanship? I understand it is an old car but these are brand new parts. Another ongoing issue with Trivett is their inability to fix the windscreen wipers so that they wipe the windscreen. Now I have taken my car to be serviced there several times but they have never quite managed this very simple task. Something about the car which translates as “you have an old car which we are not interested in servicing properly". The problem being that any new car you buy from them will one day be old and this is the standard of service one is to expect. Words of warning, flashy new building, shame about the service." Good luck with your future cars. POSTED BY: JIM - KINGSGROVE NSW 14/9/2007 ========== REPLY ========== It sounds like your dealership service dept **** too! If you were having all of these problems to begin with, they should have taken care of them better. It sounds like the service dept made your car worse. I feel for you! I have had my 2008 IS250 for almost two months now (almost 2,000 miles), and it hasn't given me any problems on its own so far. I went to have my 1000/mile service (license plates installed), and the Lexus dealership - service dept ruined the finish on my passenger leather seat (I am guessing with some harsh cleaning product?). When I got my car back from such service, I notice my beautiful black leather was discolored in places. Given the fact, I was already mad because I had to wait at the dealership with no loaner car or shuttle available (like promised) to take me to work, this made me livid because I had to go back and spend more time to get me seat fixed. The dealership did re-finish my passenger seat, which only was a temporary fix because some of the discoloration is still visible. If they can't even clean my car w/o ruining it, I wonder what the "under the hood" service is going to be like? I am seriously thinking about having my IS250 serviced at a Toyota dealership. Lexus is just a fancy Toyota anyway ... what's under the hood is about the same. I have had service in the past from a Toyota dealership on previous vehicles, and it was always fabulous! Much better then what I have experienced at my Lexus dealership so far. Well good luck and I hope your Lexus IS250 doesn't give you any more problems! MERCEDES-BENZ E240 2002: NICK THEODOSSI *COMPLAINT* |
||
ISSUE: |
I bought a Merc E240 2002 from Nick Theodossi Prestige Cars in 2007. What a major mistake. It has been a nightmare purchase, not just the car but this dealer refuses to fix the car under the warranty. Stay away from this Dealer, he would have to be the **** in Australia, avoid like the plague! |

NISSAN PATROL GU 2001: ANOTHER PATROL ENGINE AND GEARBOX FAILURE *COMPLAINT* |
||
ISSUE: |
The same story keeps repeating. My 2001 Nissan Patrol 3.0lt blew up just before Xmas. Merry Xmas from Nissan. Paid in excess of $14k to fix it and the gearbox failed in February 08. Happy New Year from Nissan. When is this going to stop - probably when every vehicle has blown up and been repaired. Nissan are a disgrace! I called the 'Customer Care' line and was immediately told that the vehicle was out of warranty and to forget about help from Nissan. The vehicle has 139,000 kls on the clock. About 1/4 of the life expectancy you would expect from a diesel 4wd. |

FORD LASER KE 1989: RE: GREAT CAR *REPLY* |
||
ISSUE: |
These are good cars it is a shame Ford cannot make them like my 87 Meteor - still goes strong. My 97 EL traded on a Mazda Tribute as it started to fall apart. Also Laser are different from the 323, not all parts fit. |

========== ORIGINAL POSTING ========== "FORD LASER KE HATCH 1989: GREAT CAR - My wife bought brand new in 1989 an auto, carby model KE Laser GL (no power steering). It has been serviced regularly, had the timing chain and front CV boots replaced and has done 150,000 K's since with no repairs other than the distributor module. A great reliable car. Pity Ford can't make 'em like that today!" POSTED BY: PETER FREDERICK - MELBOURNE, VIC, AUS 29 SEP 2007 PROVIDE FEEDBACK ========== REPLY ========== Ford didn’t make it, Mazda did, that’s why it’s good. Ford can’t and still don’t make cars like that. POSTED BY: ANDREW - SYDNEY, NSW 1/10/2007 |

========== REPLY ========== I agree these 4WD's are really underrated. There are several things that will stop the engine from starting, most are easy to check. 1 If the oil is too thick or the oil pressure is not set correctly in the CPU to match the actual sensor, the CPU will tell the injectors not to fire yet. 2 The fuel pressure sensor has a similar fault (I looked at a cheap Jackaroo on ebay recently which had this exact problem. 3 Other faults e.g. blocked fuel lines cause problem 2 above. The fuel system is the easy one to check, you generally see bubbles in the line. Also I have heard that the connector for the injectors can play up. This is easy to check by removing the OHC cover. Hope this helps. POSTED BY: STEVE - BRISBANE, QLD 26/2/2008 |

FORD FALCON 2002: RE: BA FORD MAJOR PROBLEM *REPLY* |
||
ISSUE: |
I have the same problem and took it to auto electrician. He reckons it’s a glitch in the chip in the computer and the Ford service manager who has been really helpful thinks it's the throttle position switch, $190 from Ford dealer easy to replace. I will try anything my car has shut down 9 times and some Ford guys blame the gas conversion. |

========== ORIGINAL POSTING ========== "FORD FUTURA BA 2002: BA FORD MAJOR PROBLEM - Stalling doing 110 on bend, nearly had head on. To any body out there please be careful with 4 persons in taxi. Please can somebody give me info. Is this normal for this model? Have BF as well, don’t want family killed due to this problem. Taxi in Fords at moment, told normal problem - fly wire or something. Contacting Ford Melbourne. Thanks, Roudy Kalgoorlie" POSTED BY: ROUDY ROUT - KALGOORLIE, WA, AUS 13 FEB 2008 PROVIDE FEEDBACK ========== REPLY ========== Hi Roudy. There are many, many reasons why a motor can shut down/cut out. Without the benefit of either being there at the time or having the car for diagnosis makes it very difficult. Any mentions at this time would only be a guess and not an informed diagnosis. As I have mentioned in previous posts, these vehicles have a sequence they go through in the event of a serious problem being identified. Identifying this can only be done by correct diagnosis with the appropriate tools (which is what the dealer would be doing). How about waiting for the report from the dealer and take it from there.
