FORD FAIRMONT AU 2000:  BATTERY DIES AFTER A COUPLE OF WEEKS.     *FEEDBACK WANTED*

31/01/2008

ISSUE:
BATTERY

Battery dies after a couple of weeks. After a long run (2000km) the battery stays charged for months. Battery checks OK. Do I need to replace anything? Other than that the car runs flawlessly.

Not sure if this is relevant Peter but, about ten or fifteen years ago I had a similar thing happens on an old Ford Falcon.

It turned out that the aircon compressor control relay contacts were welded shut regardless of whether the relay coil was energised. This put the compressor clutch load directly on the battery permanently. It would survive an overnight but only just and the battery would recharge the next day while running. But, if you left it two days, the battery would not turn the starter.

I would suggest you have an auto electrician check to see if there is any current draw from the battery when the car is parked.

As much as I dislike your choice of tow vehicle, you could try a goose neck that works at a different angle to what you have now. Personally, I'd go for the Hayman Reese tow bar.

The only way a Hayman Reese tow bar will void your warranty is if the tow bar causes the failure of another component. What could a quality tow bar like a Hayman Reese cause failure to? Someone is trying to take you for a ride. Speak to Hayman Reese direct, I'm sure they will reassure you. They have agents in Virginia and Caboolture.
Good Luck,

Hi ya mate,
Something I tried once was to take the 50mm ball off the tongue and turn the tongue upside down, re-fit the ball to the tongue. Won't cost you anything. Otherwise go to a caravan shop and ask.

Hi there,
I have owned three R/R and if you are towing a caravan and it is lower in the rear end, put a set of air bags under it. That will fix the problem plus you can adjust the amount of air to suit, or if that is out of your price range put a set of heavier springs in it. Cheers.

FORD FALCON SR BF 2007:  MY FORD     *COMPLAINT*

31/01/2008

ISSUE:
MANY PROBLEMS

My problem is quite a simple one, yet none of the management team seems to be able to make a decision to resolve this issue.

I purchased a new Ford SR BF on 5 March 2007 from Peter Warren Ford Warwick Farm Sydney. The vehicle was not in a fit or merchantable state to be sold to me, it has been back to service on at least 19 occasions, had a software program run through the gearbox, a new gearbox, a new K Bar, a new battery and various other replacements and services.

The car was, at Ford's request, left for a whole week with Sinclair Ford, supposedly for engineers from Melbourne to come up and look at the car. The car has a problem with the gearbox still and the car has creaked since new. Ford have not, since new, been able to find or rectify the creaking problem, which becomes quite loud when it is raining and underneath the vehicle becomes wet.

Margaret Horesh Customer Relations Centre Manager, was to contact me yesterday (30th Jan) with an offer to settle the matter Her offer made today (31st Jan) was to take the vehicle into service again so technical staff could look at it but I am sorry we have been there, done that! I do not consider this an offer at all but a “fob off” once again.

My husband and I have not been unreasonable in requesting either a replacement vehicle, which we are prepared to pay a little extra towards or perhaps a demonstration vehicle with a few kilometres on it. At this stage we are not prepared to once again take the vehicle in to service.

There is a point in time when enough is enough and I wonder how many more times the vehicle has to be "looked at" before someone can make a final decision. I am preparing to file an application with the Consumer, Trader and Tenancy Tribunal seeking an order for a replacement vehicle or a fair and equitable compensatory award.

Ford buyer for 25 years but unfortunately no more!

But gees Ford you got to have better customer care or else no one will be buying a Ford any more. I know I have been in a similar story but not as bad. They just don’t Care. I sympathise with you Leanne.

I purchased a brand new EL Fairmont in late 96 from Blacktown Ford. Used it for commuting to Gosford for six months, mostly motorway driving. At 38,000K I took it in for service at the Gosford dealer. Tyres were good, as were the front pads but, for some strange reason the front discs were past their wear limits and had to be replaced. Ford would not support warranty and said I had been using the brakes excessively to get the discs in that condition.

I argued the good condition of the pads and tyres did not support their diagnosis and that it was probable that the discs were never hardened. I even demanded an old disc back for testing, but they refused and insisted I pay for the replacement disc and the labour.

That was eleven years ago and I have kept well clear of Ford products ever since. They just don't deserve second chances with their attitude. I suggest you go for full compensation and then go buy a Toyota or a European car. Couldn't recommend any Aussie car at the moment.

Hi Leanne.
I do sympathise with your problem, but I'm afraid it will never be fixed unless they have the opportunity to do so. I do not doubt you have been inconvenienced over this issue (surely a loan car was supplied) but as you mentioned the dealer has contacted engineering in Melbourne, so they are obviously taking you quite seriously and not "fobbing you off". Going to a different dealer will only cause more grief as they will have to start the diagnosis process all over again without the full history of the problem.

I also noticed in your post that you have not mentioned just what the transmission /gearbox /car is doing wrong (other than a creaking noise ... has the steering rack had the TSB performed on it? as this emits a loud creaking noise). Maybe the request made by Margaret Horesh Customer Relations Centre Manager may have been the first step to getting what you want.

TOYOTA HILUX SURF SSRG 1992:  THE COST OF SPARE PARTS FROM TOYOTA    *COMPLAINT*

ISSUE:
SERVICE COST

The cost of spare parts from Toyota is just a **** as I got a sunroof in my surf. During a very hot day it started to rain and one drop on the hot glass is all it took to shatter the sun roof and the replacement cost is going to be $981.50 and that’s after a discount and that’s only the glass then another $500 to fit.

It would be cheaper to buy whole new after market one as I worked for dealerships for many years and know the good and bad cars and what goes wrong with them. I might just go back to Subaru as I have seen them with 600000km on them and still drive like new.

Hi Don.
I assume that the Taxis you mentioned are dedicated LPG vehicles. The dedicated factory gas on BA/BFs is throttle body vapour supply like most earlier systems using Vialle converters. There are many aftermarket LPG installations around where they add the same style "Throttle body vapour supply".

The alternative is "Vapour Sequential Injection" where vapour is injected to each inlet port just like the petrol system. This is a more expensive system but is much more efficient / reliable and delivers quite comparable performance with petrol (and does not restrict the inlet like others). The system we (a Ford dealership) install is supplied by Parnell VSI. They have a website with lots of info to whet your appetite to change to LPG.

Hope this is of help. If you contact me direct I can give you more info if you wish.

I had gas installed on my 2004 XR6 {non turbo} a couple of years ago and had a lot of trouble with back firing. The installer closed the plug gap to .8 mm and this helped a lot but did not stop the problem altogether. It had Ford plugs fitted, I was talking to a guy in Perth when I was over there, and he suggested to fit NGK'S, which I did and have not had a speck of trouble since. Also the car performs and runs so much smoother. Very happy with it now, the gas system is sprint gas.

LPG conversions need to be servcied at least every 20,000K by an LPG installer. The main problems are often the air filters blocking.

HOLDEN VECTRA CZ CDX 2002:  WATCH OUT FOR THIS ONE    *ADVICE*

30/01/2008

ISSUE:
TRANSMISSION

Hi Guys

I have been very happy with my CZ CDX Vectra which I bought at one year old from a Sydney dealer. It had previously been registered to Holden and had 11000km on the clock. Only trouble I had was a failed battery in the first year. Warning signs for that are loss of cruise and occasional loss of power steering, followed shortly by non starting. New battery and everything came good.

Two months after my three year warranty ran out, the transmission went into failure mode. I booked it in to a local dealer for its 45K Km service and asked him to fix the failure mode problem. He did the service and advised the ECU had been recalibrated and the problem was fixed.

A week later I set off on holiday, a 700km trip. Guess what, failure mode again after 300Km. Anyway, I finished the trip and booked it into a dealer in Maclean NSW.

After some checking, they advised the following:-

1. The vehicle did not show on the VIN register and it had missed two important recalls. (Fault of the selling dealer and also the last dealer to service it). The vehicle had been off the service radar for over three years.

2. There is evidence of water in the gearbox. This has caused emulsification of the transmission fluid and degraded the clutch bands, thus the ECU sees to much slip and locks the drive into failure mode.

3. Further than that, the oil has been displaced in the bearings and the box is unrepairable.

4. The only solution is a new transmission.

I then requested the dealer to contact Holden and explain the situation as, the vehicle had only done 45000km even if just out of its three year warranty.

Holden came back and agreed to pay for everything. They advised that this water problem only effected a very few Vectras and is caused by pickup of condensate from the Aircon drain by the crankcase vent which in the original design is right next to it (rework of this was one of the missing recalls). It took ten days to locate and install the new transmission.

It cost me a couple of hundred bucks for the proper diagnosis, plus an extra week’s holiday accommodation.

Anyone with this model Vectra should do a check with your local dealer to ensure it is on the VIN register and has had all its recalls carried out.

The Bill was over five grand. I am still happy with the vehicle, but I have learnt a few lessons and I am currently looking around for a different local Holden dealer.

I saw this sort of problem once. It ended up being too much compression. The head had been removed because of a head gasket being blown and too much was machined from the head. Check that you don’t have really high compression. Around 175psi or more is too much.
Good Luck.

For what it's worth, my BA G220 Fairlane is pinging too, however, the dealer did an upper engine clean, and that has made some improvement. They mentioned some "new cleaning fluid" which they have now (sorry I don't know the name of it). They said that carbon deposits can build up inside the engine, which causes the compression ratio to increase. They also replaced the knock sensor as a precaution, but they feel that it is more likely to be the cleaning which made the improvement.

Twice in the previous 20,000km we have started the car only to find it had no power steering. The first time we were caught unawares and the problem seemed to disappear on its own within a minute or so. The second time it was around dusk and it was noted that the headlights did not work either. This time the problems rectified themselves instantly when the indicators were turned on!

The controls on the stereo itself work without fault but it is a lottery as to what the buttons on the steering wheel will do when pressed. Most often the volume up button controls the tuning down and volume down does nothing.

Sometimes the power windows will descend fully as expected with the short push and release of the button, sometimes they won't.

Recently, while travelling at around 20km/h and slowing for traffic lights, the electric motor that opens the hatch was heard to operate on its own. The car then proceeded to "bing" loudly to warn me that the hatch door was ajar.

These faults have been reported at the regular scheduled services but the dealer can find nothing wrong and the problems refuse to show themselves while at the dealership.

We have reported the problems to Holden directly who can only suggest that we return the vehicle to the service department of the dealership at our earliest convenience.

Astra 2006 AH hatch, my Astra also does some strange short out, and as you said it happens at any time of the day. I enjoy my music and crank the volume up, but also make sure I adjust the levels so it doesn't sound awful. When it turns down then I can't turn it back up again for over an hour. It drives me crazy especially when I drive 7 hours to Sydney all the time.

As for the other problems all I've had "so far" are rattles in the doors, and a paint defect which has been repaired 3 times - still a ongoing battle, just received it back for the 3rd time only to find a piece of grit under the paint. Now it has to go in for a 4th time, a total of 10 days without my car and no courtesy vehicle. My car's only done 5000 ks and already the engine has this irritating hiccup or stumble when I'm accelerating. I love the car but I'm starting to feel like I should have bought something else.

Just a note to clarify.
Several posts have mentioned "clock springs". The clock spring is not a spring as you would expect. It is actually a spirally wound ribbon cable mounted at the top of the steering column. This cable enables a continuous connection of devices such as cruise controls, horn, gearshift, audio controls and airbag circuits at the steering wheel. For many years they have caused electrical concerns in this area, primarily due to the constant movement of the steering wheel.

Hope this eases concerns about how it is related to some problems.

MANY PROBLEMS

Has anyone thought of doing a Class Action Suite against Holden Australia.

I bought a Cewmen Cross 8 from Holden and it spent more time in their workshop at Suttons Holden Arncliffe then it ever did on the road. There was an issue with rear brakes that in the end they just flatly refused to fix and admitted they couldn't. They effectively sold me a faulty product for $70,000 plus and 3.5 years later with 72,000ks on the clock from hwy driving I got $16,000 for it. Yet every other ute of this same type and model and in most cases more ks on the clock, and no where near close to the accessories I had installed in this vehicle at time of purchase ... sold at the time of sale for $42,000 plus.

At the time of selling it I had up it for sale originally for $38,000. The best offer I could get was $16,000 because every time you came to a stop the back brakes would scratch so much that if you were in peak hour in the middle of Sydney you would stop all traffic and the place would go as quiet as a mouse as people would stare and you could see the looks on their faces as they where thinking **** and they say only beautiful woman can only do that.

As for Holden service, what is that? In Holden’s Head Office Customer Service, they wouldn't know what service is or even how to tell the truth if it bit them fair in the ****. They constantly **** to me, never returned calls … I would Never buy a Holden if it was the last mode of transport on the face of this earth!

I stay with Ford or Japanese made cars now. At least with the Japanese, they remember what service is all about and will go to the ends of the earth to achieve excellence. The only thing I dislike about their cars, **** forgot we don't all have hands as small as them. I thought I was the only person being punished for buying the same model SS, apparently not.

Rear drivers side door seals have been replaced 3 times to fix the flood of water after heavy rain that pools behind my seat
- the most annoying creaking sound from my seat, seat rail replaced but after 10 minutes creaking is back (and they managed to break the trim that wraps around the rear of the seat rail at the same time),
- recall for some airbag issue
- rear passenger side door did not unlock or lock so the alarm went off when I tried to lock with the remote
- car is so sloppy and loose after 50,000 it feels like a $450 car rather than a $45,000 car.

The most annoying one is a noise, sorry Clunking that comes from under the car when I drive on the freeway at 100km/h and slow down to sit in heavy traffic, the noise sound like their is an annoying gnome in the diff with a baseball bat. It was so loud that I recorded it once on my mobile phone and replayed it to the dealership (4th complaint for the same noise) and then I actually thought that they would look into the problem properly but they just "added an additive to the diff to fix the problem". I am no mechanic but I'm also not stupid.

Then there is the Holden customer service at the Vic office. In summary - they have the communication skills of a house brick! 8 Holdens later - never ever ever will I buy Holden again ...

KIA CARNIVAL  2002:  RE: I TOO HAVE A LEMON KIA CARNIVAL    *FEEDBACK WANTED*

29/01/2008

ISSUE:
ENGINE

Hello, I too have a lemon Kia Carnival. We purchased this car in 2006 with 62,000km on it. It now has only 78,000km and has major engine trouble.

Water is leaking into the engine as all the other complaints I have read about. I have contacted the place of purchase and they have fobbed me off to KIA. I have also spoken to consumer affairs person about this problem; they gave me all the advice and basically said good luck with that.

Why do we have these government departments (that tax payers pay for) when they won’t help you without going through so much stress and hardship to get results? This is only a new case so I would like some advice/encouragement in what to do. I have 5 children 3 attend school and youngest is only12 months old. Walking and bussing everywhere is hard and expensive.

Is this claim worth pursuing, or should I cut my losses and run, go buy a Ford or Holden?

Regards Julie

"Have been very happy with 2002 LS carnival for last three years. Have just read many letters on net and consider myself lucky to have made it this far. But problems that previously unaware of have started.

Oil in the water was noticed today and at this stage will be unable to afford to repair. Car has now done 108,000km. Have done approx 40,000 of these ourself and probably only got this far due to treating it gently and servicing it myself (trade mechanic). Due to own servicing I suspect that I would not be eligible for any type of compensation (what do you think?).

As stated, have been happy with car till now. Firstly any idea how much longer other Kia's have lasted after first noticing coolant contamination. Secondly, have you heard of anyone finding a successful and not too difficult engine transplant that is not the original so that problem doesn't reoccur.

Expecting it to last my family at least another several years and 200,000 driving it the way we do if only a successful heart transplant can be found for it. Like I said have been happy with all else. Steering has had the occasional growl but hasn't been a problem.

PS appreciate any info you may be able to return to me and think it a great thing you are attempting to do on behalf of all the Carnival owners who have really been stung hard. Good for me if eng can be sourced because it doesn’t look like I’ll ever run out of near new parts n panels cos I intend on turning this lemon into a peach."

I don’t own a KIA, but what if you pulled the motor out and machined the heads and block, use a top quality gasket set. I know the VL Commodores have a habit of head gasket failure due to the radiator mounting. Look at this for failure run a bit lower thermostat, top quality coolant, being a mechanic it should not cost you much. Also why the motor is out there is suppose to be a y shape hose coupling that’s made out of plastic at the rear of the motor that has been known to fail.

DEALER - SERVICE

I have had the same level of service from Trivett Paramatta (must be a company thing!). I believe that when the cars get older and the mechanics have to do more than simply read codes and replace what the computers tell them, it becomes either too hard or the company feels they are not making enough money out of you. I too am looking for a good mechanic for my 306. I still like the car and want to keep it.

"PEUGEOT 306 XR 1996: SEEKING A RELIABLE HONEST REPAIRER - OR HOW LONG IS A PIECE OF STRING ? - I love my little 306, it finds car parks that SUVs simply can't dream of, can maneuver zippily through heavy traffic and is quite fuel efficient.

It has however run into a few needy repairs of late one being a new window cable, additional repairs to the automatic window motor and a new door lock.

So, I took it to Trivett at Alexandria. $900 later it was repaired, then about 8 months after the repair the internal workings of the door lock fell in so I took it back to be repaired under warranty. 1 1/2 yrs later the lock fell in again. The quote for repairs, incidentally everything they supposedly replaced with new parts $880. Now don't get me wrong but wouldn't you expect a brand new door lock and barrel to last more than 1 1/2yrs? Why am being asked to pay for someone else poor workmanship? I understand it is an old car but these are brand new parts.

Another ongoing issue with Trivett is their inability to fix the windscreen wipers so that they wipe the windscreen. Now I have taken my car to be serviced there several times but they have never quite managed this very simple task. Something about the car which translates as “you have an old car which we are not interested in servicing properly". The problem being that any new car you buy from them will one day be old and this is the standard of service one is to expect.

Words of warning, flashy new building, shame about the service."

Hi Marika,

Look for a non-franchised Peugeot repairer. The aussiefrogs website or the Peugeot Club of NSW will be most helpful in finding a reliable repairer in your area. Don't despair Peugeots are great cars.

HOLDEN CREWMAN  2006:  RE: WHO SELLS A CAR WITHOUT A LOCKING FUEL DEVICE - HOLDEN     *REPLY*

28/01/2008

ISSUE:
FUEL SYSTEM

Re fuel cap leak Holden Crewman VZ.

Brian,

Good luck trying to fix your leak. I have a 3 yo VZ and had a fuel leak from day 1. Holden 'service' initially told me that it was a breather problem, removed the whole tray, and couldn’t rectify it. Went through 4 caps then they told me I was putting too much petrol in it. I replied 'politely' that I only fill it to the 1st click, no response.

I was pretty frustrated because I have signage that has been replaced 3 times at a cost of $150 a throw. Holden wouldn't come to the party so I went to my usual mechanic which voided my extended warranty, I told them you guys can't fix anything anyway so no loss. This was amongst some other minor issues also.

I will be getting my panel beater to sort it out. If you go to spare parts and get the service/parts drawings it’s not an issue with the cap. You do it up and it works itself loose. It seems to have a support bracket off the chassis which either becomes loose or inadequate for the job, as the filler hose is only a rubber hose like a radiator hose.

Previously I had a Ford which had solid metal and wasn't attached to the body and didn't vibrate or twist off, I feel it’s a poor design. I hope this helps. I'll get my car serviced in the next couple of weeks and hopefully it can be sorted.

"HOLDEN CREWMAN VZ V6 S 2006: WHO SELLS A CAR WITHOUT A LOCKING FUEL DEVICE - HOLDEN - We bought a Crewman without thinking to check if you get a locking fuel cap or flap that opens from inside the cab. Imagine our surprise upon first fuelling to discover no lock! Rang the dealers and was passed around until they found that a locking fuel cap was an after market Holden accessory, note not a spare part.

Paid for fuel cap and thought that was the end of it until within a week fuel stains down the side of the car. Return car to Holden dealer must be faulty cap - they have to order a cap so make do with original. A week later a new one arrives and I go and pick it up, same thing happens.

This happens three times with that dealer, the last time they told me they had fixed the problem (regular service) go to service station and find they have replaced locking cap with another non locking cap. So I had a dummy spit and they got another locking cap ordered.

30,000 k service. This time I take it to another dealer they assure me it must be a fuel tank or line problem after 3 faulty fuel caps. I leave the car with them for 4 days. Go to pick up car - oh sorry it was the cap and it hasn't arrived yet. They then tell me it was delivered over the weekend so fit a cap and I drive off. They do the same thing - they ordered a new cap but because it’s an accessory they ordered and fitted the wrong one again.

So here I am one year down after 4 fuel caps and more petrol poured out the side of the car than consumed by it waiting for yet another one."

Holden 1 tonner, it will be the diff depends on the dealer, some will admit it is a problem. It is usually the side gear bearings they are too tight on the gear. Mine was a VY Series 2 thought they would have rectified the problem by now. The diffs are made in Thailand. I had two complete diffs hub to hub and one rebuild to fix the problem. The rebuild was done by transmission services at 120000ks and this sorted the problem.

Issue diagnosed by Holden as a faulty wiring harness that shorts the new sensor out each time they put it in.

Problem is Holden, and that is Aust wide do not have a wiring harness to replace mine with. Still waiting, spoke to them today and will be waiting until at least end of next month.

Hi all, last night I was treated to the 5th gear failure after carrying out a towing stint of at least 600km. I know this is a common issue. Mine happened at 96,500km. Let’s hope it’s not too expensive!

What I am interested in is the overheating/cylinder head issue. Due to the fact I tow trailers (often on beaches and always in low ratio), I have been interested in seeing if I could add to the capacity, or do anything to help the existing cooling system. My interest has been flamed by the fact that I overheated the engine once after concentrating so much on the RPM and whether I was going to get bogged that I didn’t look across at the temp gauge.

Has anyone got any suggestions or comments on the cooling system? Thank you.

Hey Joy, maybe you should change your name or maybe your car. I didn't even read your complaint but I posted my Astra complaint on here almost a year ago now. My friend had one too and we both got rid of our Astras because if either of our cars had a problem, the other got the same problem soon after. And the more I spoke to other Astra owners, the more I realised they're just lemons.

My mechanic said they're okay until about 60000km and then get rid of them. My friend was having problems at 45000 and I had more than enough with mine. I am now the proud owner of a Mazda6 and I couldn't recommend them enough. My advice? Get rid of it quick, before it only gets worse. And believe me, it will. Good luck.

Usually the first hypothesis is the problem, however taking material off the disc only exaggerates the issue further i.e. less material the disc heats quicker!

Purchase some slotted discs this will cure it for you, and then you don’t have to change your driving technique. My kids were the worst ones for it on our family XR6 I now have no probs at all.

Hi all

If you have had this same problem let me know, or take it as a little warning when buying an Astra.

My 03 model the other day started to default the automatic gear box to 3rd gear even when starting from 0km/h (A light came up on the dash with a spanner and car on it). This was very inconvenient for me as the car would have no drive from 0-30km/h. I took it to the Automatic transmission specialists and they said that the problem was faulty codes and a bad wire connection.

That cost $300 AUD. That isn't the best part. I came back from holidays and it started doing it again. Took it to the same place.

I am now writing this to say that my bank balance is now $1800 worse off as the whole electronic computer system needed to be replaced. Could have had an after market computer for $200 but the mechanic strongly advised me against it.

And the car only has done 48000km, and has been serviced every 5000-10000km.

Hope Holden goes broke.

The light came up just after I had returned from Holidays and after 2 trips to the Auto specialists at the car dealer. The light refused to turn off and on the 3rd trip to them was told that the entire chip needed to be replaced. This was done on the 25/01/08. I am almost $3k worse off ... what a start to the New Year!
