========== REPLY ========== Toyota have the weakest front diffs in the business. The 100 series has the same front diff as Hilux, both weak as ****. Don’t reverse in low range too hard, otherwise you will shear the teeth off. If you want strength, buy a Patrol - Strongest drive trains in the business. POSTED BY: ANDREW - SYDNEY, NSW 1/11/2007 ========== REPLY ========== Hi, I just had the same problem, blown up the front diff of my 2006 Navara at 38,900 klms and the car is only 13 months old. How did you go with warranty? I have been told the crown wheel is broken and all I did is drive the car on the sand in 4wd. Please let me know asap. POSTED BY: DAVID LAMBERT - FERNTREE GULLY, VIC 4/1/2008 ========== REPLY ========== My D40 is sitting on a hoist, where it has been for the last three weeks. It’s missing 10-15 teeth off the crown wheel. Nissan say it’s driver abuse. I was reversing up a hill in L4 when it failed. POSTED BY: STAVROS - MELBOURNE, VIC 13/2/2008 |

HOLDEN ASTRA 2006: TRANSMISSION REPLACEMENT AT 25000 KLM *FEEDBACK WANTED* |

========== REPLY ========== Hi, I have the same problem with my 2006 Astra and I am taking the matter further cos Holden does not want to help me. They think the horn is ok and the engine noise is normal. I also have many more problems with the electrics in the car. Could you please email me so I can provide you with my mobile number, so we can help each other out. I really wish I never bought this car, it’s a lemon. Thanks for nothing Holden. POSTED BY: STEVEN - SYDNEY, NSW 4/6/2008 ========== REPLY ========== Hi, I have a 2002 Holden Astra which I bought second hand only 2 years ago. My car had a leak underneath and was told by Holden mechanics that it was the rear main seal and that would be $2200 to investigate. Naturally, I wanted a second opinion and took it to my own trusted mechanic who told me it was the transmission. I had to have my transmission rebuilt which set me back nearly $4000. After many months fighting with Holden, they offered me the measly sum of $900 but only because my mechanic had used "some" Holden genuine parts because he tried to keep the cost down. More people need to be made aware of the "no service" policy that Holden seems to have with the public, yeah sure buy a car from us but don't expect anything in return. NISSAN NAVARA STX D40 2006: RE: NISSAN NAVARA STX D40 2007: FULL OF IT *REPLY* |
||
ISSUE: |
I purchased a Navara STX (D40) in Feb 2006. At around 13,000ks the clutch started to slip intermittently and finally had to be replaced at approximately 18,000ks. I lodged a warranty claim as the fingers on the pressure plate showed uneven wear suggesting a pressure plate thrust problem. |

========== ORIGINAL POSTING ========== "NISSAN NAVARA STX D40 2007: FULL OF IT - In my last bleat about this car cutting out and losing power in which Nissan could not find the problem they have finally found the problem. I took it to them a week ago while it was playing up and they tell me it’s the fuel pump. Great! Let’s get a new pump and it will be sorted, 20 working day to get one from Europe. What a joke! Then two days later or something they just happen to find 2 in Melbourne. In the mean time I have asked for a courtesy car as my piece of junk has been useless to me and my family {this going on for 2-3 months}. Now the place that’s doing the repairs have the pump and parts that were approved by Nissan. But now Nissan have done a back flip and told them not to touch the car {after it was sitting at Nissan for three days and didn't get touched}. Now they want to replace the fuel rail. What For? When the mechanic diagnosed it as the fuel pump, now I got to wait until the fuel rail gets here. So now I will have to wait who knows how long for that, and all without a car. I'm fed up with this company and its product. I will not buy this brand ever again and I will certainly be going out of my way to voice my opinion to anyone who has thoughts of buying this model. I should have bought with my heart and not my head, a Ford." POSTED BY: SCOTT MCINTYRE - BRISBANE, QLD, AUS 15/09/2007 ========== REPLY ========== Hi Scott, I understand your frustration. You should, in writing, ask some questions of Nissan Australia. Like why they are changing the fuel rail when the pump was diagnosed as the problem. Also ask why it takes so long for repairs to be carried out. Let them know that being without your work vehicle for days or weeks and having this problem for 3 months is totaly unacceptable and that you want to be compensated for it. Hopefully you might get a free service out of it. Post on this site how the Navara is after the repairs. Good Luck, Mark. POSTED BY: MARK KURAN - MELBOURNE, VIC 16/9/2007 ========== REPLY ========== Hi Scott, I bought a Nissan Navara ST-X Turbo Diesel ONE week ago and it’s currently now back at the dealership getting fixed. I spotted Diesel leaking from underneath and called the Care line for a tow (from the country I might add, I wasn't happy at all). Now it’s in at the dealership and they said that I need a new Fuel Injection pump and it could take a few days. I'm so mad that I might have just bought a Lemon of a car so I’m looking for anyone who might have had other issues with the brand. I don't believe the dealership at all (according to them my car it the first in Australia to have a problem, what a lot of **** I thought). I have been doing a bit of research and found out Australia have no laws against dealerships selling lemon cars (Stupid Government). Although I have started a log of every time it goes in to the dealership and how long etc. It’s only One Week Old. Andrew POSTED BY: ANDREW - MELBOURNE, VIC 25/10/2007 ========== REPLY ========== Kim, I bought an Auto because of the problems people were having with the clutch on the manuals. I did some research and to my mind the clutch is too small. A contributor to another site claims Nissan has now released a modification for the clutch? If you have success with Today Tonight, I have much more to contribute about anomalies with this vehicle that will make the story much more interesting. CAR-BUYING-SELLING ADVICE 1999: STUPID PEOPLE *COMPLAINT* |

Why do I continuously hear about people buying old cars with extremely high mileage and they complain the car they bought for 2 grand brakes down all the time and is costing them so much money to repair! |

| POSTED BY: ADAM P - SYDNEY, NSW, AUS, 31/10/2007 PROVIDE FEEDBACK | ||
|
========== REPLY ========== Adam, I would have expected a totally different response from a Member of the Mechanical Institute of Engineers, if you really are a member. People drive older, higher mileage cars for various reasons. Most obviously being the cost of buying a new car, maybe sentimental reasons for hanging on to an old car too. There is nothing wrong with an older higher mileage car as long as it has been well maintained. I have a Mazda E2000 van with over 500,000kms on it and a Honda Accord with 330,000kms and I would still have a Commodore with over 450,000kms had my wife not written it off a year ago. All performing well and in roadworthy condition but maybe not worth very much to sell. I'm certainly not "stupid" or "cheap" and either are most of the people that contribute to this site. It would appear to me that AIME have lowered their standards recently. Cheers, Mark. POSTED BY: MARK KURAN - MELBOURNE, VIC 1/11/2007 |

It is probably too late to change your opinion, but Newmar is a great company. ALL dealers suck. It doesn’t matter what brand the dealer sells they don't know how to fix anything beyond a fuse. It is too bad you didn't go to the factory. They are the greatest. |

I put my Ford Futura in for service at my local Ford Dealer and asked for a standard service. The prices you quote are ballpark for a dealer though. I used to service my car at the dealers but now go local for half the cost. Your car is not under warranty so no problems. I purchased an SS at 92,000 Km. The car was fine until now at around 93,000 it has started to stall (completely dead). At first it would start up again after the first attempt now it takes anywhere from 5 - 10 attempts before it will start again. |

========== REPLY ========== Hi Mate, had a similar problem in wife’s JR Vectra, took it to 3 dealers, auto electrician. Many tests were done no joy still stalling. I actually fixed the problem myself by increasing the idle on the engine by about 2 notches, since then no dramas at all. I don’t know if that will work for you but it’s worth a shot. POSTED BY: CHRIS - ADELAIDE, SA 31/10/2007 ========== REPLY ========== I had a VY one tonner s 5.7 with the same problem, at 15,000km it progressively got worse. Stalling even when you just pulled up to the lights. After having the clutch replaced the problem was fixed. If the SS is manual check the condition of the clutch. POSTED BY: A PENNA - SCORESBY, VIC 31/10/2007 ========== REPLY ========== Is it an ex police chaser? Some people have experienced this problem after purchasing an ex chaser. They tend to have an excess draw of current and can cause it to stall. It also indicates that could have a faulty alternator. It was common on the high amp alternators. Good luck! It doesn't matter if it is cold or hot and it doesn't do it all the time. Sometimes the check engine light will come on just after it gets going again (which is a hassle). This however will disappear if revs exceed 2000rpm. Any ideas, thoughts or guesses would be great" POSTED BY: JOHN - GIRRAWEEN, NSW, AUS 24/10/2007 ========== REPLY ========== Hi mate, Thanks for the feed back. In answer to your questions it has had the injectors done. I also done a service on it 1500km ago and it has not fix it (not that I expected it to), like you I run heavier oil. Mine has done 257000 so I’m not too keen on running a thinner oil in it. I've had a few people look at it and have been told it may be the glow plugs, although I will get that sender switch you mentioned looked at as it is one thing no one else has thought of and knowing my luck I’ll fork out god knows how much just to find out it was something as simple as that. POSTED BY: F JON - MELBOURNE, VIC, AUS 8/10/2007 ========== REPLY ========== Common problem with Astra aircon is the compressor clutch electrical coil goes open circuit. This has happened to my TS Astra as well as my friends. Local auto aircon repair centre was repairing up to 5 a week where I live. Unfortunately to repair this involves removal of the compressor. A replacement clutch assembly is now available but not from Holden who wanted to replace the whole compressor in my case. ($800+) Hope this helps. POSTED BY: BRIAN - BRISBANE, QLD 9/10/2007 ========== REPLY ========== I empathise with you, just replaced the starter motor on auto electrician diagnosis for $600 after my wife was stranded with the kids for over an hour on the way home from the beach. Two months later stranded outside the local primary school picking up the kids. After a clutch start the car was returned to the same auto electrician and told the ignition has blown the starter motor and now I'm up for a new stater (not covered under warranty) and ignition barrel. FORD FALCON 2006: NEVER LEAVE SOUTH AFRICA TO GET YOUR CAR SERVICED *COMPLAINT* |
||
ISSUE: |
I brought my vehicle over from South Africa on a holiday and had it serviced at a Ford dealership in the western suburbs of Sydney NSW. I left it with them for a couple of days as I was sight seeing around Sydney. I was little bemused when I picked the car up. When I entered the driveway as the spare parts ute was arriving for work the driver seem to be intoxicated and was drinking a tooheys new long neck. Could also hear bottles rolling around in the back of the ute. I was startled as it was 8am in the morning. I picked for vehicle up and drove no further than 450 metres out of the driveway when the diff gave way and I was brought to a sudden halt. After getting out of the vehicle I checked for damage and noticed there were prawn heads inside the left front hub cap. A foul smell indeed. Then I proceeded to check the back seat and found 2 tickers to bass hill drive and a tube of ky jelly and bottle of cougar. |

RENAULT SCENIC RX4 2003: RE: RENAULT RX4 GEARBOX COLLAPSE/IMPLOSION DRIVE FAILURE *REPLY* |
||
ISSUE: |
17th Oct 2007 Renault RX4 fidji 2003 model with 22000 miles on the clock full service history wrecked its gearbox. Apparently the crown wheel has damaged the casing and guess what it needs a new gearbox, awaiting Lumleys extended warranty to pay for it (that’s another story). |

========== ORIGINAL POSTING ========== "RENAULT RX4 GEARBOX COLLAPSE/IMPLOSION DRIVE FAILURE - Anyway I'm a garage owner and a customer came into me with his Renault RX4 on a recovery truck with a gearbox failure ... holes in casing due to implosion of diff! I fitted a box ... a second hand unit procured for approx £880. Took £300 to fit labour and racked my brain to come up with a reason for the failure ... to be honest the only reason I can come up with is bad design basically and simply put a component not fit for the job. These vehicles are thrown together from design to format and are to be avoided. Consider a different marque and don’t let these **** vehicles tempt you." FORD FALCON MKII 2005: USING TOO MUCH GAS *FEEDBACK WANTED* |
||
ISSUE: |
I have just installed a 50 litre gas tank into my BA Falcon and I can only get on average 260km per tank! |

========== REPLY ========== Is that a 50 litre tank or 50 litres of gas used? The usable amount of gas in a tank is 85% of the volume. For 50 litres of gas, it's a bit low but if it's a 50 litre tank, that's pretty good. POSTED BY: MARK KURAN - MELBOURNE, VIC 26/10/2007 ========== REPLY ========== Sounds a bit short. I have a BA Fairmont, I made it dual when it had 54000 and it now has 132000. It is actually getting better with time. I get 380km from 50 litres (max I ever got into it was 51.25L) a very good trip I get 450km. You will find just before a service the distance per tank drops ... i.e. I'll get 330km from a tank I do 60,000km pa and most is on highways at 120kmph (60%) the rest is around towns or on link roads. I find the best economy at night. POSTED BY: JACA - NEWCASTLE, NSW 6/11/2007 |

LANDROVER DISCOVERY 1999: RE: LANDROVER FREELANDER 1998: LOSING POWER *REPLY* |
||
ISSUE: |
I have the same problem - I was going to London today in my TD2 2.5S Disco on a 99 when the engine power just stopped then came back on. The engine was still running but it didn’t go faster and the revs stayed at 3000. I have a auto so I got towed back to my garage and they say as my car is overheating and the coolant level had leaked overnight that my head gasket has probably blown as when the coolant was topped up and the engine was running but with the coolant lid off there was bubbles in the water. Meaning that air is getting in. Also I looked near the back drivers side wheel as that’s where the fuel pump is and it was leaking ... all of these are contributing to my … Was perfect Discovery. |

========== ORIGINAL POSTING ========== "LANDROVER FREELANDER 1998: LOSING POWER - My eldest son bought a Landrover Freelander 1998 model earlier this year. Without any warning whilst driving it loses power and he eventually he has to pull over, sits on the side of the road for up to half hour before can then restart the motor. It has got to the stage where it has happened turning through a busy intersection. No one can find the problem. Has anyone else?" POSTED BY: KAREN MARTIN - BRIS, QLD, AUS 16/10/2007 |

KIA CARNIVAL 2000: RE: KIA CARNIVAL RUBBISH *REPLY* |

ISSUE: |
I too have a 2000 Kia Carnival and this week it done a crank shaft. Was told it would cost $7000 to replace motor. Not good enough when the motor costs more then the car. The more I look into it the worse it gets. |

========== ORIGINAL POSTING ========== "KIA CARNIVAL 2000: KIA CARNIVAL RUBBISH - In 2000 I paid $36,000. In 2004 I sold it to the dealership where I had bought it. Received $8,000 due to the head being done twice, brakes was replaced when eight months old. Kia Australia promised prior to my warranty running out they will fix any engine problems. I may have once out of warranty for a short period. Did I get this in writing? No. When out of warranty engine needed replacing. When I tried to speak to my contact at Kia, he had left the company." POSTED BY: GARY MACKINNON - MELB, VIC, AUS 8/09/2007 ========== REPLY ========== Gary - we're in the same boat with our Kia Carnival. Have contacted Slater & Gordon lawyers since finding out how many people are affected by the manufacturer's fault in the Kia & they are very interested in hearing from Everybody who has a problem - if they get enough complaints they may have grounds for a class action against Kia. Leonie & Mark Gusman POSTED BY: LEONIE GUSMAN - SUNBURY, VIC, AUS 12/09/2007 ========== REPLY ========== I also have a 2000 Kia. The engine has been replaced twice. I was interested to read the bit about Slater and Gordon but how do we find all of us that have been affected? POSTED BY: MARG HENLEY - MELBOURNE, VIC 3/10/2007 ========== REPLY ========== Hi I too have been burnt with the 2000 Kia Carnival. Head gasket went last year, now the engine has totally died. I am keen to be part of a class action. Best wishes Lea. POSTED BY: LEA ELLIOTT - SYDNEY, NSW, AUS 13/10/2007 ========== REPLY ========== Lea, Look up on Google "Merchantable Quality ACCC" Lodge a formal complaint with your states consumer affairs department Lodge a Formal complaint with the ACCC Look up all the stories on this website or Google "Kia Carnival Engine Defects Australia" & you will see you are not alone the more people that complain to the ACCC the sooner they will act. They have the power to force Kia to pay everyone back that has spent any money fixing defects in their engines. But to date the ACCC has only a handful of formal complaints so they don't see it as a big problem. Email me your contact details. Regards, Dale POSTED BY: DALE MORRIS - WOODVALE, WA 18/10/2007 |

========== REPLY ========== I saw this sort of problem once. It ended up being too much compression. The head had been removed because of a head gasket being blown and too much was machined from the head. Check that you don’t have really high compression. Around 175psi or more is too much. Good Luck. POSTED BY: MARK KURAN - MELBOURNE, VIC 26/10/2007 ========== REPLY ========== For what it's worth, my BA G220 Fairlane is pinging too, however, the dealer did an upper engine clean, and that has made some improvement. They mentioned some "new cleaning fluid" which they have now (sorry I don't know the name of it). They said that carbon deposits can build up inside the engine, which causes the compression ratio to increase. They also replaced the knock sensor as a precaution, but they feel that it is more likely to be the cleaning which made the improvement. POSTED BY: GREG - RYDE, NSW 4/11/2007 ========== REPLY ========== I have owned a 2003 Mazda Bravo 2600 since new and from day one we have always experienced pinging under hard acceleration, particularly so in 3rd gear above 3500 revs. Numerous fuel filter changes and tanks of premium fuel have had on effect on the problem in the 90,000kms we have had the vehicle. Have resigned ourselves to living with the problem and make sure we back off the throttle when it occurs. Other than that it has provided very reliable travel.
