Toyota have the weakest front diffs in the business. The 100 series has the same front diff as Hilux, both weak as ****. Don’t reverse in low range too hard, otherwise you will shear the teeth off. If you want strength, buy a Patrol - Strongest drive trains in the business.

Hi, I just had the same problem, blown up the front diff of my 2006 Navara at 38,900 klms and the car is only 13 months old. How did you go with warranty? I have been told the crown wheel is broken and all I did is drive the car on the sand in 4wd. Please let me know asap.

My D40 is sitting on a hoist, where it has been for the last three weeks. It’s missing 10-15 teeth off the crown wheel. Nissan say it’s driver abuse. I was reversing up a hill in L4 when it failed.

TRANSMISSION

Bought my 2006 Astra Equip new in May last year and have been pretty happy with it until last weekend when the Check Engine light came on and Auto Transmission started slipping. Holden are now replacing the transmission under warranty after just 25000klm.

Just want to ask if this is a common problem with this model, and are there any other major problems that I should be aware of.

Thanks

Hi, I have the same problem with my 2006 Astra and I am taking the matter further cos Holden does not want to help me. They think the horn is ok and the engine noise is normal. I also have many more problems with the electrics in the car. Could you please email me so I can provide you with my mobile number, so we can help each other out. I really wish I never bought this car, it’s a lemon. Thanks for nothing Holden.

Hi, I have a 2002 Holden Astra which I bought second hand only 2 years ago. My car had a leak underneath and was told by Holden mechanics that it was the rear main seal and that would be $2200 to investigate.

Naturally, I wanted a second opinion and took it to my own trusted mechanic who told me it was the transmission. I had to have my transmission rebuilt which set me back nearly $4000.

After many months fighting with Holden, they offered me the measly sum of $900 but only because my mechanic had used "some" Holden genuine parts because he tried to keep the cost down.

More people need to be made aware of the "no service" policy that Holden seems to have with the public, yeah sure buy a car from us but don't expect anything in return.

REPAIR

Why do I continuously hear about people buying old cars with extremely high mileage and they complain the car they bought for 2 grand brakes down all the time and is costing them so much money to repair!

My gripe is stupid people who are too cheap to go and spend the extra money up front and whinge about having to Repair Old Heaps Of Junk.

Yours sincerely, Adam Pace (MAIME)

Adam,
I would have expected a totally different response from a Member of the Mechanical Institute of Engineers, if you really are a member. People drive older, higher mileage cars for various reasons. Most obviously being the cost of buying a new car, maybe sentimental reasons for hanging on to an old car too. There is nothing wrong with an older higher mileage car as long as it has been well maintained. I have a Mazda E2000 van with over 500,000kms on it and a Honda Accord with 330,000kms and I would still have a Commodore with over 450,000kms had my wife not written it off a year ago. All performing well and in roadworthy condition but maybe not worth very much to sell. I'm certainly not "stupid" or "cheap" and either are most of the people that contribute to this site.

It would appear to me that AIME have lowered their standards recently.
Cheers,
Mark.

CLUTCH

I purchased a Navara STX (D40) in Feb 2006. At around 13,000ks the clutch started to slip intermittently and finally had to be replaced at approximately 18,000ks. I lodged a warranty claim as the fingers on the pressure plate showed uneven wear suggesting a pressure plate thrust problem.

After much frustration and a lot of run around I gave up on fighting Nissan. I have had over 40 years experience driving manual vehicles and for Nissan to suggest the clutch wear was due to improper driving was a bit insulting to say the least. Now I read that others have had similar problems I know it is not just me. Cold comfort.

There have also been a few other smaller problems which have been fixed with no hassle under warranty which is only to be expected for new release models.

"NISSAN NAVARA STX D40 2007: FULL OF IT - In my last bleat about this car cutting out and losing power in which Nissan could not find the problem they have finally found the problem. I took it to them a week ago while it was playing up and they tell me it’s the fuel pump. Great! Let’s get a new pump and it will be sorted, 20 working day to get one from Europe. What a joke!

Then two days later or something they just happen to find 2 in Melbourne. In the mean time I have asked for a courtesy car as my piece of junk has been useless to me and my family {this going on for 2-3 months}. Now the place that’s doing the repairs have the pump and parts that were approved by Nissan. But now Nissan have done a back flip and told them not to touch the car {after it was sitting at Nissan for three days and didn't get touched}.

Now they want to replace the fuel rail. What For? When the mechanic diagnosed it as the fuel pump, now I got to wait until the fuel rail gets here. So now I will have to wait who knows how long for that, and all without a car. I'm fed up with this company and its product. I will not buy this brand ever again and I will certainly be going out of my way to voice my opinion to anyone who has thoughts of buying this model. I should have bought with my heart and not my head, a Ford."

Hi Scott,
I understand your frustration. You should, in writing, ask some questions of Nissan Australia. Like why they are changing the fuel rail when the pump was diagnosed as the problem. Also ask why it takes so long for repairs to be carried out. Let them know that being without your work vehicle for days or weeks and having this problem for 3 months is totaly unacceptable and that you want to be compensated for it. Hopefully you might get a free service out of it. Post on this site how the Navara is after the repairs.
Good Luck,
Mark.

Hi Scott,
I bought a Nissan Navara ST-X Turbo Diesel ONE week ago and it’s currently now back at the dealership getting fixed. I spotted Diesel leaking from underneath and called the Care line for a tow (from the country I might add, I wasn't happy at all).

Now it’s in at the dealership and they said that I need a new Fuel Injection pump and it could take a few days. I'm so mad that I might have just bought a Lemon of a car so I’m looking for anyone who might have had other issues with the brand. I don't believe the dealership at all (according to them my car it the first in Australia to have a problem, what a lot of **** I thought).

I have been doing a bit of research and found out Australia have no laws against dealerships selling lemon cars (Stupid Government). Although I have started a log of every time it goes in to the dealership and how long etc. It’s only One Week Old.

If you know of any other issues I should keep a eye out for let me know and while it’s under warranty I'm going to be the most annoying customer ever. Tanya

4 month later it is doing it again and my paint work is flaking off. Nissan informed me today to book it in. They will pull it apart if nothing found wrong it will cost $750.00 for them to refit. I told them to ****.

I called Today Tonight. I was told to find more with the same problem and they will do a show. So anyone that has had their clutch replaced please email me."

Happy New Year everyone! I've started mine with the replacement (at 43,00km) of the Continental tyres ($1,100) on my May 2006 STX D40 Navara manual. I've just found out yesterday that I have a "slipping clutch", and went to Cricks at Nambour to be quoted either $2,800 for a fitted Nissan clutch or $2,400 for a fitted non-Nissan clutch. I could not believe that it wasn't under warranty. I could reasonably expect to pay for a replacement if I had been thrashing the vehicle up Fraser Island towing a caravan(!), but almost all of the driving has been on bitumen, unladen, with the occasional trip to Brisbane. After 30 years of driving, this is the first time that this has ever happened to me.

They said that they would make a "goodwill" claim for me, but not to expect anything. After spending $50,000 on this vehicle, I would expect a lot more concern and support, but having read these very interesting articles (thanks everyone), I don't have high expectations. Thanks to all who have posted here - I'm more encouraged than I was yesterday, and I'll keep you updated with my story.

Cheers Bruce

I hope you didn't pay for it At All. The clutch burnt out on my D40 Christmas night in the middle of nowhere. After a lot of **** Nissan Australia paid my motel for the night, car hire for 12 day, new clutch and fly wheel. Be persistent. They tried to get away with only paying for 3 days car hire and expected me to pay $3000 for the clutch, fly wheel and labour. I wasn't going to pay anything.

Contact Nissan Australia and don't let up until you get the result you want.

Our STX has 70,000kms on the clock, and the clutch has been slipping for a while now. It finally gave way and Nissans pushing back on warranty saying it’s wear and tear! My old Hilux did 330,000kms and the clutch lasted the distance. The clutch in the Navara is obviously not of merchandisable quality... for $50k I expect a lot better quality for my money.

I have had 2 Landrovers, 2 Toyota diesel Hilux and 2 Nissan Patrols. The Nissan's are the only ones that I have had clutch problems. My latest Nissan was purchased September 2007 - it is a ST 3.00 Turbo diesel with 28000 klms on the clock & the clutch has gone.

Nissan say it is my driving even though I have been driving for over 46 years, 28 of these 4x4 driving. The dealer doesn't want to know you & Nissan Australia doesn't either. Their so called customer service said it has been known for the clutches to go even lower klms than 28000 & is not a warranty claim.

The service Manager at the dealership was aghast that I had taken the car on the beach once as that could cause problems. I thought I had paid in excess of $50000 for a real 4x4 not one that I just had to polish & keep in the garage. It is going to cost $2500 for an after market clutch as used by racing 4x4's.

If anyone has any success with Nissan as it has been pointed out to us on a couple of occasions that the turbo diesel engines are too powerful for the clutch Nissan supplies.

We have a 2005 Kountry Star with full body paint. We have a paint issue. All the corners on the slides are pealing and the side panel for the refrigerator is completely peeled off down to the primer. I called Newmar customer service and informed them of this situation. I was told out of warranty but send pictures. An estimate was received to fix the paint for $950, which is pretty reasonable. Newmar did not offer to assist in getting our coach fixed. Just new plastic corners as a goodwill gesture. But would not cover for paint or labor.

If you purchase a Ford or Chevy and the paint is peeling, these manufacturers will repaint free of charge. I explained to Newmar that I would make sure all customers and potential customers know how they feel about their product. Our coach is like brand new and there is no reason to have full body paint peeling from out coach.

HOLDEN SS  2002:  SS BEHAVING BADLY    *FEEDBACK WANTED*

COOLING SYSTEM

I purchased an SS at 92,000 Km. The car was fine until now at around 93,000 it has started to stall (completely dead). It stalls whilst performing u turns, left/right turns now just sitting at the lights or driving. At first it would start up again after the first attempt now it takes anywhere from 5 - 10 attempts before it will start again.

It is running extremely cool, for example driving in very hot weather around busy traffic the needle barely moves off c and then strangely when I drove 100km along the freeway it temporarily moved up to normal temperature then immediately dropped back again. I have also noticed when idling its revs are very low.

I am hoping this can be fixed under the Holden warranty (believe me I don't have my hopes up). Needless to say I am furious. I wrote this thread after seeing a thread here regarding the same model Commodore doing the same thing (stalling during u turns) among other things. I would really appreciate any info or advice or if any one else has experienced this, please to write in. Thank you.

Is it an ex police chaser? Some people have experienced this problem after purchasing an ex chaser.

They tend to have an excess draw of current and can cause it to stall. It also indicates that could have a faulty alternator. It was common on the high amp alternators.

FORD FALCON  2000:  ANNUAL STANDARD SERVICE PLUS PARTS & LABOUR EXCESSIVE?     *FEEDBACK WANTED*

ISSUE:
SERVICE COST

I put my Ford Futura in for service at my local Ford Dealer and asked for a standard service. I was phoned to tell me that they had found several problems such as front brakes, exhaust system, steering rack (covered by Warranty). I gave them permission to fix any problems. On picking up the next day, I was presented with an account for $1093.

This I objected to and read out in detail all the costs. The $175 Standard Service did not include all the normal replacement parts and lubricants required: Oil, Air & Fuel Filters or wiper insert blades. Total for this 'Job 1' was $371.86.
‘Job 3' was for Auto Trans service. Total $ 156.50
'Job 4' was for the Exhaust system. Total replacement. Total cost $ 421.46.
'Job 5' was Flush Brake fluid, refill. etc. Total $67.68.

Invoice read, Total labour $330.03. Parts $541.32. Sublet $38.00 (Courier)? P.O.L. $108.15. Less discount $88.84 Plus G.S.T. $ 92.87.

Invoice total was $1021.55, which I paid, but said that I was not happy with the amount and the cost of a standard service, which had been reduced from the first invoice I saw by about $40. My locality is on the Mornington Peninsula, near Rosebud. Any advice on my complaint would be appreciated, 'mug pensioner who is a trusting soul'.

Hi Don,

I can sympathise with you on the cost of service - I reckon you should try and find a local service centre not affiliated with Ford. The prices you quote are ballpark for a dealer though.

I used to service my car at the dealers but now go local for half the cost.

Your car is not under warranty so no problems.

ENGINE

Hi All,

Looking for advice and help diagnosing an issue with a recently purchased secondhand VX 2001 Berlina Wagon, done 128,000kms.

In two instances we have been driving (hot day) at 100kms plus and the engine has cutout. Complete shut down - no brakes, no electrics. When this has occurred the battery light has flashed. The car will restart, runs very rough and cuts out again as soon as you accelerate over 50km/h. The petrol was at half a tank on the most recent occasion and below a qtr of a tank on the other. After time (1hour) the car restarts, runs fine and is drivable (we drove a further 200kms second occasion).

After the first shutdown we filled the car and it took 58ltrs (approx) and the most recent filled again and it took 44ltrs.

We checked the battery and the issue does not appear to be coming from there.

I noticed on previous threads a fuel pump issue - could this be the case? or more likely electrical?

Thanks for any help anyone might be able to offer!

ENGINE

Hi John,
As the owner of a similar 98 3.0l Jackeroo diesel, mine's done around 125,000km (see my comment 24 Oct ) - perhaps I can offer a couple of suggestions/questions.

1. Has the vehicle been through the recent global Isuzu fuel injector recall?
2. Check both oil filters and type of oil used. These motors must run on the correct oil (pretty thin) although mine is now on 1 grade up from the recommended 10W-30 - I think its 20W-40. The thicker the oil, the harder the vehicle may be to start, and runs lumpy when cold.
3. I'm told they have a bit of a dodgy sender switch thingy under the accelerator pedal, which can upset the computer. Perhaps get it checked/replaced.

I do know that the Isuzu motors in these were very advanced for their day but quite complicated with 2 oil pumps, 2 oil filters and oil pressure driven injectors, etc, making them a challenge to diagnose problems. Somebody did tell me that you can get the computer programme to do your own diag with a laptop, but I've neither needed to nor tried to follow that one up. I am sure of this, though: if you haven't got a really **** good mechanic, get one! Try a new or used Isuzu truck dealer/repairer.
Hope this helps...

Hi mate,
Thanks for the feed back. In answer to your questions it has had the injectors done. I also done a service on it 1500km ago and it has not fix it (not that I expected it to), like you I run heavier oil. Mine has done 257000 so I’m not too keen on running a thinner oil in it. I've had a few people look at it and have been told it may be the glow plugs, although I will get that sender switch you mentioned looked at as it is one thing no one else has thought of and knowing my luck I’ll fork out god knows how much just to find out it was something as simple as that.

Holden Astra 2002 - absolute design debacle - ignition coil pack failed on our way to a wedding on the northern beaches from Blue Mountains at 3.30pm on a Friday afternoon. We had to limp to Parramatta Holden where we had to beg to have something done about the car. At that stage the car was still under warranty and it still cost me $600.

Air conditioner re-gassed twice in four years, third time, I was told the air conditioner needed to be replaced $900 thank you, due to air conditioner clutch failure!

Radio comes on when starting car full blast, don’t you love it 6am in the morning.

Ignition would not start whilst in car park at Penrith car park 8.30pm, car fully loaded with perishable foods, the shopping centre wants to close up, what do you do? - We managed to start the car after 1 hr through the grace of the almighty and no one else. New barrel replaced under warranty after a number of phone calls and my time.

Now, today, ignition failure for the second time with my son in Newcastle who has missed an appointment because of it and it looks as though we will have to put it on a flat top to bring back to Sydney, at what cost? Because this piece of **** cannot be started.

Just think of your daughter, 12 o'clock at night trying to get home in situation as above. Just to add, timing belt every 60,000 kms, what a joke, $700 a pop, thank you! Common problem with Astra aircon is the compressor clutch electrical coil goes open circuit. This has happened to my TS Astra as well as my friends. Local auto aircon repair centre was repairing up to 5 a week where I live. Unfortunately to repair this involves removal of the compressor. A replacement clutch assembly is now available but not from Holden who wanted to replace the whole compressor in my case. ($800+) Hope this helps.

I empathise with you, just replaced the starter motor on auto electrician diagnosis for $600 after my wife was stranded with the kids for over an hour on the way home from the beach. Two months later stranded outside the local primary school picking up the kids. After a clutch start the car was returned to the same auto electrician and told the ignition has blown the starter motor and now I'm up for a new stater (not covered under warranty) and ignition barrel.

What trouble free motoring we are not enjoying!

Fuel consumption too low? I suggest you fill the tank and perfom an accurate consumption test.

DTE = distance To Empty. Remaining fuel in tank calculated to empty based on previous consumption rate. Is your fuel gauge functioning correctly?

The drips from the silencer. Is it oil or water/condensation mixed with exhaust soot?
Hope this helps.

So anyone that has had their clutch replaced please email me.

I brought my vehicle over from South Africa on a holiday and had it serviced at a Ford dealership in the western suburbs of Sydney NSW. I left it with them for a couple of days as I was sight seeing around Sydney. I was little bemused when I picked the car up. When I entered the driveway as the spare parts ute was arriving for work the driver seem to be intoxicated and was drinking a tooheys new long neck. Could also hear bottles rolling around in the back of the ute. I was startled as it was 8am in the morning. I picked for vehicle up and drove no further than 450 metres out of the driveway when the diff gave way and I was brought to a sudden halt. After getting out of the vehicle I checked for damage and noticed there were prawn heads inside the left front hub cap. A foul smell indeed. Then I proceeded to check the back seat and found 2 tickers to bass hill drive and a tube of ky jelly and bottle of cougar.

Let’s just say I can't wait to get home to Durban.

I have a 2001 Kia Carens which I've owned since new with 115k on the clock. So far I've had the following problems:

* Plastic pin broke in driver's side door handle once.

Absolutely nothing major at all. It's got 6 seats, heaps of space and great economy. Probably one of the biggest highlights is the Phillips / Kia stereo which even though it's completely standard I had my neighbour convinced at one stage that the car had a 12" sub woofer ...

The car handles much better than it should given its dimensions, and was just $23,000 band new with a 6 year warranty! (A friend of mine got his for $18,800 when they ran them out!)

All in all it's been a bargain, and when time comes to sell it my next car will have a lot to live up to.

If you're looking for a wagon or people mover, definitely take one for a test drive now that they're getting around for less than $10k.

Is that a 50 litre tank or 50 litres of gas used? The usable amount of gas in a tank is 85% of the volume. For 50 litres of gas, it's a bit low but if it's a 50 litre tank, that's pretty good.

Sounds a bit short. I have a BA Fairmont, I made it dual when it had 54000 and it now has 132000. It is actually getting better with time. I get 380km from 50 litres (max I ever got into it was 51.25L) a very good trip I get 450km. You will find just before a service the distance per tank drops ... i.e. I'll get 330km from a tank

I do 60,000km pa and most is on highways at 120kmph (60%) the rest is around towns or on link roads. I find the best economy at night.

I also have the same problem on my 07 STX. Speedo out about 7% @ 100. But distance is correct i.e. odometer is correct. I checked this with roadside radar and GPS. I suspect this may be deliberate to mask the understating of their fuel consumption figures (when driving slower you should use less fuel).

A check on fuel consumption for over 18000 klm reveals that stated figures by Nissan are unobtainable. Nissan don't have a FIX.

Hi Michael,

Hi Michael,
I had a similar problem with a Patrol a few years back where cars were flying past me at 100kph. I had to get my wife to drive next to me to see what my speed was. It was a pretty rough way of testing but I estimated the speed was out by 10%. I then had the Patrol dyno tested to see exactly how far out it was. It was 10% out and I complained when I took the car in for a service. Yes, the Australian design rules allow for 10% error but that is no excuse for the manufacturer to be so far out with their tolerances.

In the end, the Nissan dealership suspected that the speedo drive in the transmission may have been the wrong one and replaced it. The speedo from that date has read 100% accurate. Maybe your Navara has the same problem? Have it dyno tested and let the dealer know what the results are. If it’s out by more than 10%, then give them the receipt for the dyno test for reimbursement.
Good Luck, Mark.
