NISSAN X-TRAIL ST S 2006:  SPONTANEOUSLY IGNITES    *COMPLAINT*

21/06/2007

ISSUE:
SAFETY

This is our 2nd X-trail and have been very happy with both up until now. Taking my two small sons to sport on the weekend suddenly smelt burning. After turning off the heater and radio I continued to smell burning.

Pulled over to the side of the road, stopped the car and turned off the engine smoke started coming out of the middle console vents. Ran around to passenger side to get kids out of the car. As I turned back to car with mobile in hand flames started coming from the same vents, within minutes the car was fully a blaze! Completely destroyed.

Sounds like an electrical problem behind the dash.
Has anyone recently fitted additional electrical components to the vehicle, Mobile Phone Mounting etc? I would be thinking electrical short either by wire rubbing through or pinched between two mounting points etc.

JEEP CHEROKEE RENEGADE 2006:  BRAKE PAD AND ROTOR WEAR    *COMPLAINT*

19/06/2007

ISSUE:
BRAKES

We bought a 2/2006 Cherokee, had numerous recalls and some to do with brakes. If these aren't bad enough at the last service we were told the front pads need replacing. The car has only travelled 25000 klm's but upon telling them I did not want them put on until I discuss this further with them upon picking up the car. But once there was told the rotors are also worn out and badly warped & untrue.

But the dealer was prepared to put pads on only to later tell me it would need rotors and then at this time need again new pads, mind you at a cost of $200 for a set of pads and $480 for the rotors without any labour cost being about $300. After discussion with them about this I have been informed by Chrysler that I have been lucky to get this amount of k's from these items as most customers don't get anywhere near that.

My gripe is that the rear rotors and pads will also soon need replacement and the total cost of the front and rear will come to almost $2000. If this isn't bad enough that is going to be a cost that will have to be incurred every 1 to 1.5 years depending on how many k's the car does. Be aware the statutory warranty on brakes in Australia is only 20000 klm/ 12 mths regardless of vehicle warranty length.

The issue is that Chrysler fit a very aggressive pad as standard and a fairly substandard rotor compound that suits the US,Canada,UK & Europe market very well because of their fairly high speed driving situations, so that the car stops reasonably well under those conditions. But in Australia we just don't have the roads to do the same driving style as there. Hence these compounds in these components are totally unsuitable here and this severely reduces the longevity of these parts under our conditions.

I for one can not afford to maintain this type of cost. This is the first new car I have ever purchased and was not planning on such a high cost to maintain it, but Chrysler is unsympathetic to this. They know the brakes don't suit our conditions here but still fit them to the cars sold here. The word from the experts in the brake field is that not only are these items of poor quality but unsuited to a vehicle sold in this country. A full aftermarket replacement is the only reasonable option unless you can afford the cost of the constant genuine replacement parts.

I have not yet had this issue resolved and would love to see postings from others having this problem with not only Jeep but any Chrysler branded vehicle. I know there are other vehicle manufacturers with this same issue and for that reason would love to see the motoring industry come under review for it and the controlling government bodies do something about the problem. These vehicles are not aimed at our conditions nor designed to cope with it but are allowed to be sold here without the buyer being aware the problem exists. Then having little choice but to pay large repair bills.

Bendix probably make a better quality brake pad for your vehicle & DBA also probably make a far superior disc rotor than any American company can provide. Nearly all Australian vehicles have expensive brake problems that can easily be fixed the first time the brake system is serviced.

HOLDEN COMMODORE VZ II SS UTE 2006:  REAR CAMBER PROBLEM    *COMPLAINT*

19/06/2007

ISSUE:
TYRES

I purchased the car in Dec 2006. It's a nice car to drive; I actually use the car for work purposes. The car was fine mechanically but I got a puncture and took the tyre into Goodyear and they told me the tyre was no good because the inner wall of the tyre was worn so bad the tyre required replacement. The cause of this was the rear camber of the car was out and they advised me that it was not uncommon and that a kit could be fitted to the car to rectify the problem.

After speaking to Holden I was told Holden does not warranty suspension components and a charge of $45 would apply to adjust if out of specs. The reason was apparently the varying load of the car (different tools and equipment from time to time) and they cannot adjust the camber to compensate for this and it is not a manufacturing defect.

But hey the guy at Goodyear didn't even carry any weight in his car and had the same problem. Luckily I purchased a Holden commercial vehicle and used the vehicle for its intended purpose.

So Holden I say to you 15,000 km life from tyres must be normal and it's not a manufacturing defect ... not ... tell this to Toyota and Ford

P.S The car has been in 3 times also for power steering faults.

Hi there,

I have a Jeep Cherokee CRD purchased new in Feb. 07. It has done just 10,500 k's and I have been told that the excessive 'juddering' coming up to the steering wheel on braking is due to this problem. I just called the warranty people and have been told it was a recall issue as the pads bind on the discs too long and cause them to over heat and warp out of shape. He advised some 'clips' will be fitted and the disc / rotor skimmed down to remove any warping.

FORD FALCON  2003:  RE: FALCON - BRAKE SAFETY/RECALL PROGRAM    *REPLY*

18/06/2007

ISSUE:
BRAKES

Having driven to Kalgoolie from Perth ; a distance of 650 km my brakes failed on my 2003 Falcon. Taking it to Ultra Tune the first mechanic I saw that I knew had a good reputation and that if I had problems I could follow up when I got back to Perth.

I paid $250.00 to get the left rear brake fixed. On returning to Perth the right rear hose failed an hour from Perth. Now thinking this is not right I rang my local Ford dealer who informed me of (program). They replaced the hose with the faulty parts as the new hoses are not available yet!

Still waiting to get new hoses 2 and half weeks later. Am currently seeking a refund from Ford for my expense in Kalgoorlie. They don't consider this a safety problem! I certainly do as they put my life and my family in danger. I have made it clear to Ford in Geelong that is where I stand.

"FORD: FALCON - BRAKE SAFETY/RECALL PROGRAM - Found an interesting bit of information this week that may help some Falcon owners. Ford are asking owners of Ford Falcons from Model-BA September 2002 to BF Mark 2 released last March to bring them in to a dealership to have " ... the rear brake hoses replaced at no cost."
Apparently, Ford are NOT calling it a 'recall', rather a 'safety program'!

Article in the Sydney Morning Herald - 25 May 2007:
'Ford detects brake problem (Andra Jackson, The Sydney Morning Herald, 25/05/07)

The Ford Motor company is replacing brake hoses on its popular BF and BA Falcon models Australia-wide after a brake durability problem was detected. Owners of the models are being asked to bring their cars into Ford dealerships "as a matter of course" to have the rear brakes hose replaced at no cost.

Ford public affairs spokesman Edward Finn said about 200,000 cars are involved, covering the Falcon range from the BA which came on the market in September 2002 to the BF Mark 2 which was released last March.

"The rear brake hoses on certain sedan models are being replaced because in certain circumstances they wear excessively and the brakes lose their operating effectiveness," Mr Finn said.

He stressed the brake replacements which began this week are taking place as a safety program and are not a recall. So far the problem has been detected in around 1000 cars. The brake problem will be noticeable, and accompanied by a warning light, but will still allow the car to stop within the prescribed distance, Mr Finn said.

The problem of excessive wear on the brake lining is believed to stem from the high mileage the vehicles tend to be put to over different road surfaces. Another 20,000 vehicles in New Zealand will also be subjected for brake replacements.'

Hope this helps.
Best wishes, Andrew"

ISSUE:
INSURANCE

Hi Emma here

At the end of March 2007 (this year) my 2001 Toyota Prado GXL was stolen. Now I am insured by RACT Insurance. After waiting for two and a half months of investigation the insurance company has now come back and told me that my claim has been denied. With two children 3.5 and 1.5 years old living 45 minutes out of Devonport in Tassie I have been told by the insurance company they denied my claim because there is no evidence to support that the car was stolen. (I think they want me to do the police work and catch the little ****** that stole my car. I wonder if that will be enough evidence to prove my cars was stolen.)

Anyway if anyone else has had a Prado like mine stolen or can give me any advice at all on how to deal with the insurance company please help.

Greatly appreciate any help.
Thanks.

I have had a 2002 XT Falcon from new that has done 57000k. I have never towed more than 6x4 trailer to the dump, but Transmission failed totally. It looks like metal pieces have detached from torque converter and run through the output gear set. Not much left that is any good and repairs totalled $2700.

ISSUE:
RELIABILITY

I see other postings on this website regarding Renault Scenic reliability, or lack thereof. I also got sucked in by its safety features. Now my Scenic (done about 80,000 km) has been off the road for a week since it suddenly lost all forward gears in its auto transmission. Renault Oakleigh (original dealer) quoting $5500+ $1400 labour for reconditioned auto trans swap over.

And all this after several weeks off the road in the past 2 years replacing water pump, tensioner pulley, auxiliary belt, and believe it or not a faulty ground cable incorrectly fitted by Renault before original delivery (all fixed out of my pocket, several $1000's ).

In addition, several items eventually fixed under warranty including indicator stick that would flip to opposite turn after any corner if wheel corrected too quickly (many more days off the road just for that item).

So, it's back to Toyota for me. Just put deposit down on a Yaris. Waiting to find out what $ I can get for a Renault Scenic without transmission. Renault Australia refuses to release the software codes for their auto transmission computer, so you have to go back to them if it breaks. Be warned.

FORD FALCON BA XT 2002:  FUEL GAUGE/SENSOR - DISTANCE TO EMPTY    *REPLY*

15/06/2007

ISSUE:
ELECTRICAL

Similar problems have been noted by others Re: Dodgy fuel gauge on Falcon.

Twice in 3 weeks ran out of petrol when the gauge showed 1/4 tank. In second instance the distance to empty on trip computer went from 112kms to 80 (warning triggered) then to ... nothing. Came to stop, lost power to steering and all electrics in the matter of about 5 seconds! Didn't even have a chance to get to a petrol station!

The first time this occurred I was on freeway and my distance to empty showed 90 kms then splutter, shaking ... kaput! Now I fill up when I'm down to 1/2 because clearly there is something wrong with gauge. Funnily enough I always manage to put in at least 50 litres of petrol. Didn't know BA's had a 100 litre tank. Oh, that's right-they don't! Ford doesn't want to know about it.

Just as they didn't when I took my car in twice in 2 weeks re: brake fade and ABS light - now I notice there is a so-called safety program on said problem. They told me it was all in my head and didn't even lift the bonnet on first visit. Buying Volkswagen to replace.

IMMOBILIZER

This is so embarrassing, but I want to warn others against making the same stupid mistake I did!

My 1999 Astra has been reasonably trouble-free until yesterday, when it just wouldn't start. I knew it wasn't a flat battery - the engine would start but shut down after about 5-10 seconds. Being a woman with no idea I called NRMA, who arrived in 15mins (record time?!). This guy tried everything he could think of and was eventually convinced that it had something to do with the power-steering pump. So off goes my car - towed to the nearest Holden Dealership - with me spending the rest of the day stressing about how much this is going to cost me... I've heard anything to do with power-steering can be expensive...

Anyway, I got the call from Holden and how embarrassing. The immobiliser chip was missing from my key. I'd totally forgotten about how I'd dropped my key the night before and it had fallen apart - I had simply picked it up and clipped it back together - how was I to know the immobiliser chip had fallen out! So, red-faced and $170 later I was driving my Astra home... hahaha how embarrassing :)

The moral of the story... if your car doesn't start, try your spare key!

Hi Shannyn.
Along the same lines as your concern. A reminder to people with more than one car with transponder (microchip) type keys. Avoid keeping the keys on the one key ring, as this can sometimes cause the receiver system to pick up multiple or mixed signals. The result can be anything from a failure to start on that attempt, to immobilization of the system. The receiver range is "very" small, so most of the time this is not an issue.

Also when using the key ensure other keys are hanging from the keyring and not beside the ignition key, as this can sometimes "mask" the transponders signal.

I'm a Toyota mechanic and from my experience the noise that you are hearing is one that comes from one of two places:

- if it is a metallic noise get your air con compressor looked at. They have a problem when the clutch on the front of it gets loaded up and makes a really loud rattle
- the second one is that there is a lot of steel brackets behind the dash and they rattle on the plastic trims and the bad part with this one is that you can't do nothing about it sorry!

Body Control 9205-6494 (BCM) Module and 2 'Key Pads' for my 1996 Holden VS Commodore station-wagon required to ensure I can start my car, hence operate and use my car is not available anywhere in Australia. The wait time is 3 months. 3 Months for a commonly needed part for a commonly known Holden part failure of a module for which Holden has sold numerous tens of thousands of cars.

Holden are so incompetent, so consumer ignorant, arrogant and stupid that they have effectively put my car off the road (for a part I have ordered and paid for but which I must wait 3 whole months for delivery) and then hire a car for 3 months.

The morale of this story: Tell everyone who will listen. Do not ever buy **** Holden cars ever again. The twits at Holden have no idea how to run a commercially sustainable profitable business. My car has been at the mechanics now for 3 days. The best part is they reckon sourcing the part is near impossible. Just absolutely ridiculous.

If someone could please help me with some information that would be great, as we are sinking as of right now with our 2003 Freelander with the same cooling problem. Well it has 89000 miles on it and now since the overheating of the car because of the fact that it kept losing coolant we are know having to pay $6000.00 for a new motor that we really don’t have!

Our car is at a certified mechanics shop that does work on foreign cars, so I have contacted Land Rover and they are now telling me that if Land Rover approves the motor for our vehicle then we can purchase one (have you ever heard of such). They also said that they can not get motors for these vehicles and that there has been many problems with this happening so I asked if they were doing a recall on this anytime soon? and they stated they don’t see that happening! Also they stated that the motors in the Freelanders pretty much go to **** after 50000 miles, they told my mechanic this!

So when I spoke to a gentleman in the parts department he stated that the only way that they are approving these repairs to the engine is if you have warranty or an extended warranty through Land Rover, which of course our warranty ran out at the 50,000 miles.

I mean we probably owe 17000 dollars on this car and it is just really stressful because Land Rover is not getting me anywhere with this case. So if someone could send some information on this that would be great, phone numbers to the cttt and the motor vehicle repair industry. Also I did see where someone had asked about taking it public and I am for that because this is not fair! That we are paying for vehicles and mine is still sitting in the shop not moving. RE: Freelander blown head.

Same problem in Australia. There is a solution and it works. First it is a design fault. The thermostat is in the head and the gasket that separates it from the rest of the engine is to thin, not enough gasket between it and the motor and will blow out and warp the head and cost you money.

Solution = you need a gasket that blocks out the thermostat housing, you move the thermostat into the return hose to the radiator. Have the head machined and put back together.

I do not know if this is Land Rover's solution to this or not, it does work. I have had it done to my '98 Freelander, it is going great since. I have just returned from a 4000 km trip to the mountains and snow. Went like a charm, I hope this works for you. Next car I will go back to a Disco.

Has anyone in Australia had any luck with regards to Land Rover accepting responsibility for this **** car?

Unfortunately for you, your car shares the same engine as the ill fated MGF convertible.
It is a 1.8 litre Rover "K" Series engine. They are woeful & are famous for blowing head gaskets, dropping bore liners & destroying engines.

I worked for an MG/Rover dealer a few years ago & we had these engines apart on a regular basis. I’m not too sure about the cause of all the engine failures in the Land Rovers but in the MGF it was very simple. In the MGF it was caused by radiator caps not holding pressure & causing the engine to overheat. They would blow the head gasket & drop the bore liners.

We replaced an engine in an MGF under warranty, went to fit a brand new radiator cap out of the box & had to go through 7 brand new radiator caps off the shelf before we found one that would hold pressure. We mentioned this to MG for 3 years & they never fixed the radiator caps. Insane!

A few cars had more than one engine replaced under the warranty period because of this simple item. Hence they went broke. The build quality was atrocious.

If you do a little surfing on the net regarding "K" series Rover engine issues, I’m sure you will be amazed at the number of problems with them.

Good luck.
Regards, Jay.

Hello Anastasia,

I now have the same problem with my Freelander 2002.
Overheated and the motor is gone. Now I don't know what to do. Fist of all I want to complain to Landrover. They must not get away with this.
Please send me a copy of your received decision from CTTT.

The Ford 6 cylinder engine is VERY prone to blowing head gasket, cracking heads. It is usually caused by ... blocked radiator, broken thermostat, incorrect coolant. How many kms has your engine done? for the sake of around 1 thousand dollars you can have your car up and running again, they are very easy to do, but you will need to find out what caused the gasket/head to go in the first place. I recommend a radiator cleanout, new head bolts, reconditioned cylinder head, an AU steel head gasket, correct coolant, oil change, new thermostat. I hope that helps.

Hi Janine.
Water coming from your exhaust is not necessarily a blown (or cracked) head or gasket. The water may be condensation. Coolant from the exhaust would also be associated with a severe misfire or roughness in the motor. If you are using coolant the exhaust would also have a sickly sweet smell to it. As you have not mentioned a concern in these areas I would suggest having the cooling system pressure tested for leaks elsewhere.
Usually a leaking head gasket from the model you have would show stains on the RH side of the block or a roughness in the motor. Check for leaks, particular attention to the water pump and the pipe behind it that runs along the RH side of the motor. Sometimes these leaks are small enough to dissipate before forming a drip on the ground. I have also found that many water pumps only leak when hot and the motor is actually running. Hope this helps with your decision.

Yes EFs and ELs to tend to have more issues in this area than other models. Remember to keep the coolant (not just water) level at around 30% or more but not above 50%.

A footnote to my last post.
I replaced my EDs head gasket due to a coolant seepage at 170,00km. The motor still had the manufacturers hone marks in the bore (very little wear). It has now done more than 270,000km, mainly on LPG.

ISSUE:
REPAIR

I needed a replacement steering rack for my VY wagon (I bought the car two years earlier at Wilsons) for a pink slip so booked my car into Wilsons Albion Park. When I got car back, knocking noises were heard and wheel alignment was not up to standard. Took car back and wheel alignment was fixed and staff said shuddering in VY series was normal. After two days, noise got worse so I pulled wheels off and found there were no split pins holding the steering rack onto the wheels and the nuts holding the steering rack onto the wheels were at the end of the thread.

Now if I had started my trip to Queensland two weeks earlier and these nuts came off the car whilst driving it, I would not be able to steer my car causing a serious accident. This is an accident waiting to happen. All I can say Wilsons if you are reading this is lift the bar boys, our wives, kids and us blokes are depending on you to keep us safe whilst driving.

WARNING SCAM  0:  INTERNET SCAMS - FRAUDULENT SELLERS - SEADOO JET SKIS    *ADVICE*

12/06/2007

ISSUE:
ONLINE BUYING/SELLING

Hey MotorSM (Best Boats),

I am writing in regards to 2 fraudulent sellers on Best Boats Website. The following are the links to the pages ... You will note that both these sales are for Seadoo jet skis priced WELL below what they are worth. I have contacted the first seller in regards to his item. We have spoken via email several times and after several emails of lies and deception about the what/where and how much of the jet ski. I have discovered that the jet ski is not even in Australia.

After contacting the second seller I got the exact same problem, firstly being told that the jet ski is in Australia when in actual fact it is in America. Both sellers are in actual fact the same person and I can tell this via the way in which both emails were composed.

The common scam for both sellers is that the jet skis are being stored at a transport depot and that to purchase the item you must first deposit half the money into an overseas account. When I requested a contact number the no. supplied is an international one.

Finally after receiving several emails avoiding all the questions I've asked about the skis, I sent an email back stating all of the inaccuracies I have noted about the sale and the emails they have sent ... I am yet to receive an email back.

Look forward to hearing your response in regards to this..

Kind Regards, Andrew 8/6/2007

BRAKES

I bought a 2004 Ford Focus new. With normal city driving the hatch has just done 60,000k's. I am now on to my 2nd set of front brake pads and rotors. At a retail cost of $550 bucks, needless to say I'm not very happy.

So I thought for a change I would email Ford Australia with a complaint. No reply, so I thought I would ring. Just as I expected they couldn't give stuff. I've spoken to several mechanics and they have all confirmed that the brakes & rotors only last between 25 - 30 thousand kilometers. What a joke. I would understand if it was a high performance vehicle but it's a slug of a car, it's so slow it's embarrassing for a 2 litre vehicle. Never again.

As soon as I sell this car, I'll remember to ask the sales person how long do the brakes & rotors (discs) last.

Hi there,
I had similar problem with my Focus LX 2.0 lt 2003. At 21.000km I had to change front and rear Pads and Discs that cost me $950 including labour cost. Today at 46.000km I had to change again Rotor, front and rear Pads and Discs for $550 plus labour $240.

What a car? I bargain them with the service and Ford gave me some discount on the labour cost that less than $50. However, most of the parts Ford can’t give me the discount. Remember to bargain them ...

FORD FALCON BA 2002:  RE: FORD FAIRMOUNT BA II WITH CHARACTERISTICS AS FORD CALLS THEM     *REPLY*

11/06/2007

ISSUE:
STEERING

Hi I purchased my Ford BA this year it's a 2002 model. I had problems with brake shudder, clunking when take off. And now I decided to go for a nice drive out of the city, but had to turn around after 30kms of sitting on 100km as I was the passenger. I felt sick to the stomach because the car sways like a boat. I also had to have the rust fixed after it was appearing on chassis and back window. When I got car back from Ford it had glue stuff allover the place. The crash shop used by Ford didn't want to know about it. They wouldn't even come out when Ford had to repair things like no back lights, exhaust sensor left unplugged; my wiring was left under manifold and burnt my wiring down to nothing.

Ford customer care told me I shouldn't be complaining. I ended up in argument with them … I purchased my car from Q Ford Springwood in Brisbane. I also took it to a mechanic and he said wheel bearing was stuffed, so back to Ford. They filled it up with grease at a mechanic they use and said nothing wrong with it. Told me I complain too much then they tried to cover up the dent they put in my side skirts by having someone repair it saying they didn't - no it was there when I bought it. I am so unhappy with the response I got from Ford as I am a VIP customer. Hate to see how they treat a normal customer then. Next time I won't buy a Ford.

"Ford Fairmount BAII – With CHARACTERISTICS as Ford calls them - I purchased a new Ford Fairmount BAII from Southside Ford Brisbane in December 2004. It is now two and a half years old and done 65,000 kms. From day one it has produce a vibration and noise in the steering when turning at low speeds and low revs, normally when I’m trying to park the vehicle. The handbrake has required regular adjustment every 1,000 kms or so, which on this vehicle is a complicated and time consuming process. Both these problems have proven to be unfixable.

On taking the issues to Ford’s Customer Relationship Centre I was first told that Ford had never heard of the issues and I such understand “cars do make noises, you know”. After repeated complaints I was told that I should accept these were common Characteristics in the BA model, not problems or faults. I asked what Ford understood by the meaning of a “Characteristic”, and was told it is a non-standard “quality or thing” in some, but not all, vehicles that could not be resolved or fixed.

I also have a new Characteristic that is a clunk under the vehicle on take off and sometimes starts and runs on only five cylinders.

Is there anyone out there who would like a car with Characteristics or Qualities that can’t be fixed?"

How long have you had this problem and has it been since any repairs carried out? Have you had the vehicle checked over for safety? Without knowing the history it sounds like you have excessive toe in on your REAR suspension. Have the toe adjusted out (past the manufacturers spec) and retest to evaluate. It sounds unlikely, but I have struck this problem on a couple of occasions.

"I have a 2003 BA Falcon Futura and I just noticed the coolant had turned an orange colour and foamy looking - so I took it to Ford thinking that it may just need the coolant flushed out but they said that it is a fault that is very rare where the coolant can get into the Auto Transmission and vice versa and do a lot of damage. They said it is not the way I drove it but a rare fault of that vehicle. They said it would cost about $4000 and 5 days off the road to fix as they have to replace the radiator and remove the auto and replace various parts etc. The car has only done 85000 kl and is 14 months out of warranty and so it is all at my cost. I am very angry about this as obviously it is a design fault where the auto trans. fluid and the coolant can cross-over to each other (how crazy is that!).

I won't be buying another Ford even though I feel the BA is a great car to drive. The resale values are also terrible on the BA. "

Despite what Ford tell you, yours is not a rare fault, mine is sitting in the workshop while we decide if its worth fixing it. My BA has done 89,000 kms and needs approx $5,000 spent on it and of course is just out of warranty. The cause of this from what I've learned is a glue used inside the radiator is water soluble and is widely known about in the motoring industry. I am in the process of fighting Ford for all the good its doing me, but I am persistent, I have to be, I've lost a radiator, gearbox, head and it now appears my engine is not well either. I was about to trade up to a new Ford when this happened, like I will ever buy another one now. My advice to you is fight Ford, maybe if enough people do they will start to listen. "

In reply to Colin, the B.A's problem is not as rare as told by the dealer. The aluminum transmission cooler inside the radiators corrodes with electrolysis or reacts to the coolant which in turn leak coolant through your transmission and end result "STUFFED". This seems to occur around 3 years or just out of warranty.

I have asked a lot of auto people and they say to put an external oil cooler on bypassing the radiator. I have a 2005 BA Ute and will be fitting a BF Ford external oil cooler and manual radiator. Yes the BF one ton utes come out with an manual radiator and an external cooler. Most taxis having this problem now run external coolers only. Ford do not recognise this as a problem but after a bit of research it seems to be a common fault.

However my handbrake is just an on going fault, requiring adjusting just about every 6-8 months.

I also have heard of the contamination of trans fluid in the AU series Ford but BA seems to be most common. If Ford Australia would get off their **** and said there was a fault maybe they would get more sales (what is $150 to them on each car, pocket money). They run a trans cooler in BF utes and is external maybe they need court action to give them a swift kick.

I just took my 2003 BA XLS V8 ute in for its service. The ute has 48,000kms on it but was due for its 60,000km service. On picking it up this week I was told the internal oil cooler had failed and I would need a new transmission and radiator at a cost of about $3,500.

We've always had it serviced by Ford. Couldn't drive it and had to find my own way back to home 2 and half hours away with no bus services. I am waiting for Ford Customer service to ring me back.

Have been knocked back under warranty because it's over three years, even with the low mileage. Apparently the cost to fit an external cooler is about $350.00 by Ford and would have prevented this from happening. Why isn't Ford advising all owners about the potential problem? We bought a new car that should be reliable for at least 100,000 kms because we live in the country. I'm furious.

Also just read about the Brakes problem on BA. Ford dealership hasn’t mentioned this to me.

Twice in the previous 20,000km we have started the car only to find it had no power steering. The first time we were caught unawares and the problem seemed to disappear on its own within a minute or so. The second time it was around dusk and it was noted that the headlights did not work either. This time the problems rectified themselves instantly when the indicators were turned on!

The controls on the stereo itself work without fault but it is a lottery as to what the buttons on the steering wheel will do when pressed. Most often the volume up button controls the tuning down and volume down does nothing.

Sometimes the power windows will descend fully as expected with the short push and release of the button, sometimes they won't.

Recently, while travelling at around 20km/h and slowing for traffic lights, the electric motor that opens the hatch was heard to operate on its own. The car then proceeded to "bing" loudly to warn me that the hatch door was ajar.

These faults have been reported at the regular scheduled services but the dealer can find nothing wrong and the problems refuse to show themselves while at the dealership.

We have reported the problems to Holden directly who can only suggest that we return the vehicle to the service department of the dealership at our earliest convenience.

Astra 2006 AH hatch, my Astra also does some strange short out, and as you said it happens at any time of the day. I enjoy my music and crank the volume up, but also make sure I adjust the levels so it doesn't sound awful. When it turns down then I can't turn it back up again for over an hour. It drives me crazy especially when I drive 7 hours to Sydney all the time.

As for the other problems all I've had "so far" are rattles in the doors, and a paint defect which has been repaired 3 times - still a ongoing battle, just received it back for the 3rd time only to find a piece of grit under the paint. Now it has to go in for a 4th time, a total of 10 days without my car and no courtesy vehicle. My car's only done 5000 ks and already the engine has this irritating hiccup or stumble when I'm accelerating. I love the car but I'm starting to feel like I should have bought something else.

Just a note to clarify.
Several posts have mentioned "clock springs". The clock spring is not a spring as you would expect. It is actually a spirally wound ribbon cable mounted at the top of the steering column. This cable enables a continuous connection of devices such as cruise controls, horn, gearshift, audio controls and airbag circuits at the steering wheel. For many years they have caused electrical concerns in this area, primarily due to the constant movement of the steering wheel.

Hope this eases concerns about how it is related to some problems.

Hi there

Yep another unhappy Kia customer. I am a single mum of 4, my 2001 Kia Carnival has just done 50,000K and had an internal engine failure ... oil in the radiator and spilling out of the coolant all over the road. Has cost me $242 to have it towed to the closest Kia dealership, $500 for labour for them to pull the engine apart and $125 a day for a hire car. (No family here who can assist with transport).

Kia dealership say yes this is a Kia manufacturing problem (and Kia Melbourne say the same thing) but Kia have offered to pay for the short engine ($2500) and I have to pay for the rest ($4500). Not a chance.

Consumer Affairs in Vic have advised me to lodge a claim with the Small Claims Tribunal which costs $33. Kia are in breach of the Trade Practices Act having sold an engine that is not of merchandisable quality and in breach of the Victorian mirror agreement that says a product must be fit for the intended purpose. An engine that does 50,000K is not fit for the intended purpose.

Even though Kia knew there was a problem with these engines they didn't do a recall.
This is a car that is marketed to people with large families! Who of us can afford to have this sort of problem? I am going to Holden for my next car!

Good luck to everyone who is in the same position.

Hi Rae, We are in the same situation, our 2001 Kia that has done 46000km has been sitting at our local Kia for nearly 8 weeks in need of a new short engine. Kia have offered to pay for the part as a goodwill gesture, but won't pay for labour.

I have rang, written and e-mailed Kia and several automotive writers from the Herald Sun and The Age with no luck, Kia don't care. We bought our car in March 2005 for $20,000, which we put on our mortgage and there's no way we can afford another car. My next step is to try A Current Affair or Today Tonight, we need to let people know what to expect when they buy a Kia, that they are a complete waste of money and how bad their customer service is.

If you can get into contact with someone high in Kia Australia you will almost obtain anything you are after within reason.

If you are able to get hold of Korean personnel in Kia they will give in with pressure.

Do not talk to the Customer assistance line it is a call centre to make people go away. Go to their head office in person. Park your car in front with a big sign in the window this is a lemon don't buy. By going into their head office even without a sign on your window just for meeting, things will happen. Assistance will only happen for your vehicle not for every other person who owns a Kia. Kia will make you sign an agreement for confidentiality. This is so information about their assistance they have provided will not be supplied to other owners.

This action might be a little extreme however you will win in the end. Please keep on trying don't allow Kia to get away with immoral practices.

Hi there, Another Kia carnival purchaser here. We have been rather lucky in that the dealer we bought it off has offered to pay it out and give us another car (no not a Kia). They have since banned Kia cars from their yard. It's just another voice but it all helps.

If you are thinking of buying a Kia Carnival, Think again.

With so much negative press out there (everywhere) about Kia Carnivals and engine problems, why don't you people do a bit of research before buying these pieces of ****. It would only take one search on google to see that these engines rarely make it to 60,000km and have normally had 2 or 3 engines by 100,000km.

NISSAN X-TRAIL  2002:  RE: CATALYTIC CONVERTER SUCKED BACK INTO ENGINE     *REPLY*

7/06/2007

ISSUE:
ENGINE

I've also heard Nissan have been covering up an on going problem which also results in the engine having to be replaced. Apparently inside the inlet manifold there are four little butterflies and the screws that hold these butterflies in place come loose and fall into the engine causing all sorts of damage. This was recall in other countries I've heard but Nissan Australia don't seem to want to know anything about it ... check out http://com1.runboard.com/baustralianxtrail.f28.t124404 for further info.

"Having purchased my X-Trail new for towing I was happy with the car. It did all I had asked of it until I started to use a lot of oil. No leaks found, a compression check was had and the report showed good compression. Next step - Nissan's answer we need to take the motor out and dismantle for inspection. Result - catalytic converter has broken down and been sucked back into the engine result scoring of the block, piston and bearing damage. In other words a new short motor and or rebuild cost up to $12,000 dollars.

Nissan has not at this stage come to the party. The car has 97,000ks full service history and now over 3 weeks in the shop and no answers. It appears to me a design problem - why place the converter next to the manifold?"

We had purchased an X-trail 2002 new; it has used a lot of oil too. It has taken two years for Nissan to listen to my complaints. We have had three 5000 oil testing coming in every 1000 to check oil usage. All the tests were done; they say they were but we are not there to see if it has. Each time more oil disappeared. Nissan then were telling us that they were all right.

Going away for a holiday we came home. Having to take the X-trail for a 70,000 service we checked the oil before taking it in. There was hardly enough oil on the tip of the dipstick. Nissan said this was o.k. I refused to take the car back rang Nissan Melba. They told Nissan to check for the problem. Surprise Surprise. The catalytic converter had broken down.

Nissan were told to put in new short end motor, new catalytic converter, etc They said it cost around $1,500. That was two days ago. We have taken the car back to Nissan. The service person had not tightened the bolts. Forgot to put bolts in loose bolts in the air filter box. We could have lost our motor.

This has not been our only problems. Collapsed wheel bearing, three new exhusts, four recalls, and paying for services that we feel have not been done properly. These problems would have been found if they had."

Hello I have just posted on the X-trail re Cat Con etc etc and have read other postings revealing a Cat Converter recall. I bought my X-trail new and have had no such recall campaign notices sent to me for the Cat Converter. I note that it was listed with Product Recalls Australia though no recall number or campaign details are recorded. Does anyone have the info so I can follow up with Nissan.

I have a 2001 ST X-Trail which has had all the same symptoms, loss of power, using lots of oil, etc. Once I lost power, went to the dealer who informed me the cat converter had gone but a different problem required the short motor to be replaced with a cost to me of between $7300 - 12,000.

Who out there really believes that there is no correlation between the cat converter going and the short motor requiring rebuild. I have been told that this was due to bad oil or oil thickening as the car wasn't serviced by the dealer.

I have tried going through the Nissan Customer service which has been a complete waste of time and the dealer has refused assistance in the rebuild and I've been told that if I want it to go further to get legal advice.

There is no way I would ever buy another Nissan based solely on their customer service, let alone the poor performance of the vehicle and after care by the dealer.

Can anyone provide their input on issue relating to the cat converter and the short engine **** out?
