| FORD FALCON XR6 2003: RE: THROTTLE LIGHT & MASSIVE ENGINE SHUDDERS - J DESPINIDIC, NSW *FEEDBACK REPLY* |
||
ISSUE: |
Your vehicle has an intermittent electrical failure in the engine management system. Specifically because the throttle is controlled by an electric motor it will go into a limp or guard mode to minimise the chance of over acceleration (limits throttle opening) this resets on restart. Possible throttle position switch failure. You will need to take it to a Dealer for a diagnostic tool to be used such as WDS or PDS for a more precise answer. |

========== ORIGINAL POSTING ========== "Bought my BA Falcon XR6 (with all optional extras) second hand. Fantastic car to drive, until one day, at approx 80,000k's I take off in the morning and some little light on the dash on the right hand side that looks like an engine is on ... More importantly, my attention was drawn to that because I had lost all acceleration and my engine felt like it was about to take off. Massive body and engine shudders ... felt like the whole engine was dragging on the ground. So I pull over quickly, turn the engine off and pop the bonnet. Can't see anything wrong. Start the engine, take off no problem. It's now approx 95,000k's. This morning, SAME THING! I had a look in the manual and apparently that light is the throttle light, indicating that the throttle system is not working (dah). Any ideas? JD " |

| FORD FAIRLANE GHIA 2002: HANDBRAKE GRABBING *FEEDBACK WANTED* |

========== REPLY ========== Handbrake, no... Parking brake, yes. The parking brake shoes are inside the rear brake rotors. These shoes are most likely badly burnt and disintegrating. Removal of rear calipers, rotors, shoes is required. Shoes are replaced as a unit. Check the keeper springs that hold the shoes against the backing plates. Be careful that the adjuster does not fall apart (if it has not already). Best performed by a dealer as they are more familiar with the system and the correct adjustment. |

I have been looking at an Astra TS CD 2002 & now am really worried about buying one as I have bought lemons in the past. Realistically what do you think the ongoing costs for the car compares with other similar small cars? Confused? POSTED BY SAM - BENTLEY, WA - AUS 19 MAY 2007 ========== REPLY ========== Mate got the same problem with a Ford Falcon BA AU11 2002. It too has a closed transmission oil system. I've removed the nine bolts and the plate, changed the oil filter but don't have the faintest where to pour the transmission oil or power steering fluid. Any tips would be great. Cheers Mate. POSTED BY: MATT - COFFS HARBOUR, NSW - AUS 15 DEC 2008 ========== REPLY ========== Matt, the filler plug is on the driver’s side towards the rear of the main body. Depending on type, for memory, it's a case of clean around plug, remove, add fluid (9 litres dry or in your case 4 litres with a still full converter) check "o" ring on plug and tighten. Very gentle drive for a few k's thru all the gears, then back, hoist, check level by removing plug (again). I have in the past used a transmission fluid needle, like a real heavy duty syringe and you push fluid into the tranny until it starts to dribble out the very same hole. I take no responsibility for this advice. Wayne. By the way congratulations and thanks to the operators of this site. I am sorry to say that after 30 years in auto service & repair industry manufacturers have a lot to answer for. I have seen many people save their hard earned dollars to purchase new vehicles from our major manufacturers then when "common problems" occur i.e. Holden Astra/Vectra, re-badged Daewoos A/C, clutch problems are very common, not brought on by not having your re-badged Daewoo serviced by your local Holden dealer. |

========== REPLY ========== I totally agree with their point of view having purchased a Thailand sourced Honda Accord. The car has been a disappointment from day one. The fit and finish is pathetic. The selling dealer informed me the faults were acceptable - end of story and go away. Another more honest dealer informed me that they could not fix the faults without modifying the car. Virtually every fault which needs to be rectified requires the body to be modified to make ill fitting components work - so much for Honda quality. It is very disappointing when you rely on a manufacturer to build quality cars - especially one which has a solid reputation only to be left with a lemon. Honda is relying on its past reputation to sell poor quality cars in the present to the unsuspecting public. Honda, at every level still maintains the allusion that you the customer are purchasing a premium Japanese brand. Considering I have been waiting patiently for TWO YEARS for satisfactory outcomes indicates nothing could be further from the truth. For example, the response received from the two 'new car surveys' - total silence. I have sent Honda Australia a comprehensive history of my problems including photographic evidence to support my view. I will keep you posted. POSTED BY: T KROL - BRISBANE, QLD - AUS 25 MAR 2007 ========== REPLY ========== If you want to check for yourself. The first three letters in all VIN numbers tells you where the vehicle is assembled. All cars built since about 1979 must have this. You can check it here, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vehicle_Identification_Number The only different ones I know of is personally imported vehicles. For example the Japanese imported vehicles are given a new VIN number when they are complied in Australia and it always starts with a 6. I have also seen some so called Japanese cars that are actually built in Europe or Africa sold next to ones built in Japan and the purchaser or even the salesmen don't even know! | HONDA CIVIC 1995: WARRANTY - TIMING BELT *FEEDBACK WANTED* |
||
ISSUE: |
In May last year I had the timing belt on my 95 Honda Civic replaced. This included removing & replacing the front of the engine. A new power steering belt was also provided. Two days ago whilst driving, there was a clunk and the steering went very heavy however could still be driven. On calling the Norma they towed the car to a mechanic who advised one of the bolts on the harmonic balancer had sheered off. Could this be claimed as a warranty job against the work carried out in May last year? Thank you |

========== REPLY ========== After 10 months, I would'nt bother persuing a claim. It would be almost impossible to prove that the bolts were left loose and then sheered off or overtightened and snapped after such a long period of time. POSTED BY: M KURAM - MELBOURNE, VIC 23/3/2007 ========== REPLY ========== Yeah can't do warranty for so long ... I have never heard of anyone sheering off the harmonic balancer bolt. Those bolts are heavy duty. The only reason it's sheered off is because the mechanic must have just put the nut on the end of the rattle gun and gunned it into the timing gear and into the block SIDEWAYS. In time this will just flop out, and you're lucky because this could smash your valves and hit pistons and blow up your motor. I'm not sure whether Civics are a free spinning motor or not, but in this case I would scream my head off at the mechanic. Sorry you had to go through that. | SUBARU WRX 2007: TCA19320 - TRANSMISSION PROBLEM *CONSUMER FEEDBACK* |
||
ISSUE: |
Don't Buy This Car! I had this car 3 months and the transmission just would not go in gear one day. I had road side to tow it to the local dealership - Reliable Subaru. They stated it was driver error. The mechanic stated he could not prove it was driver error; the transmission had been heated up and the gear was shattered. Well if the transmission was low on fluid after only 3 months of driving the warranty should have covered it. WRONG. Not only would Subaru not cover and stand up to the warranty, we have to get a lawyer to fight the issue on the car. I have not driven the car in a wrongful manner. They are just a bad company and won't stand behind the car. I'll never forget the salesman that sold the car to me said if a bolt fell off this car it would be covered. WRONG ...again. I wish I had checked the customer complaints on the Subaru's before buying the car. It has cost us $5300.00 for a new transmission cause they said they could not just replace the gears in the car. Note: Subaru transmission is poorly designed and does not allow the lubricant to flow through it to keep parts lubricated (thus friction causing heat) as stated by nhtsa.dotgov/cars/problems/ivoq/default.htm. If you have any trouble, report it to them. |

========== REPLY ========== Subaru's have bad drivelines, they constantly **** on about their AWD. What a waste of time. On demand systems are so much better, less stress on the drive line and less strain on the engine resulting in better fuel economy. Why do people buy Subarus? - they are a car enthusiast type of car. And most of them drive around with their fog lights on; shows the mentality of the people that drive them. POSTED BY ANDREW - SYDNEY, NSW 24/3/2007 ========== REPLY ========== Gentlemen: I have had problems with our 2006 Subaru WRX. Clutch was replaced twice and the transmission was fixed twice. Car only had 24,000 miles when the transmission was fixed the first time, and only 3 days later it went again. It cost $3,000 each time to fix the transmission. That's $6,000 to repair the transmission when it would only cost $5500 for a new one. Who knows when it will need repairs again? Subaru of America would not cover this claim because they said it was driver abuse, but 3 days seems a little more then driver error. I am in the midst of selling this car because I am afraid that the transmission will go again and I can't afford what that might cost. |

| NISSAN PATROL GU 1998: CRACKED STEEL RIMS *CONSUMER FEEDBACK* |
||
ISSUE: |
I was looking over my vehicle the other day and noticed that one of my steel rims had a crack in it between the webs. After closer examination it was discovered that I had 3 rims with the same problem and all in the same location (the web one place to the left of the air valve). To make a long story short the local dealer was quick to put the car up on the hoist, take pictures and submit a report to Nissan due to his concern. After 5 days Nissans reply came back as "No we're not doing anything about it!" The dealer gave me the name and number of the person to contact at Nissan head office in Melbourne and after speaking to her was told Nissan has no responsibility and won't do anything about this. Tried to reason with her and point out my concerns for safety for myself and others and basically got told off. Went to see a mate who has GU Patrols and warn him and guess what, he has one cracked rim, in the same place. My advice to you is check your rims, but Do Not Expect Help from Nissan. So now I'm left to buy some after market rims and seriously question Nissans' commitment to its customers. |

| HOLDEN BARINA SB 1998: STALLING PROBLEM *FEEDBACK WANTED* |

========== REPLY ========== I own a 94 SB Barina since new (manual, 250 000kms). I'm not sure how different these models are however my car certainly wants to stall at times when slowing down. It has actually stalled only a few times but often instead gives the shudder of a rough-running engine. This has happened for as long as I care to remember. Also noted since way back is a bit of a flat spot half way down as you depress the accelerator. This flat spot has become more pronounced recently sometimes now making a standing start very difficult. The problem has been traced to the fuel pump - a few taps with mallet and all the problems I've mentioned here go away for a bit. Needless to say I am about to install a new one. " POSTED BY: S STRUMMOLISER - MELBOURNE, VIC 1/04/2007 ========== REPLY ========== Have just finished a long search for a similar problem in a 2002 Barina. The fault was intermittent but had occurred at the same spot several times. It got to the point where my daughter would drive down that particular piece of road. The control unit on the side of the engine has been replaced ($1190 with labour). Hopefully that is the problem fixed. I had a similar problem with a VN commodore years ago. POSTED BY: DOUG WALKER - NORTH CURL CURL, NSW 19/05/2007 ========== REPLY ========== The XC Barina with the Z14XE engine had two causes for engine stalling that I know of off hand. The most common was carbon build up in the throttle body which restricts airflow when the throttle valve is in the idle position. This problem is easy to fix by cleaning the throttle body with a commercially available aerosol throttle boby cleaner. However this cause would be unlikely at 15,000 km. The other possible cause is a faulty Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Valve. A faulty EGR will also set a Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) in the Engine Control Unit. Have this checked out by a Holden Dealer. They can check for DTCs and should be able to diagnose the problem. The EGR, if faulty, will be covered by the normal Holden warranty. A throttle body clean, if required, will be at your expense. POSTED BY: P MARTINOLI - HAWKESBURY, NSW - AUS 4 JUN 2007 ========== REPLY ========== I have also had the problem of the stalling Barina and was advised by my auto tune / mechanic to replace the faulty EGR probe "as my analysis computer says there is a fault". My car's speedo also failed at the same time. No speed and the car computer does not know what to do with the engine so it shuts down at lights or intersections. I have had this problem totally repaired by an auto electrical who followed the speedo cable into the engine bay and he found that the cable was frayed and as a result shorts out some fuse. My advice is to check first for frayed cables as this is cheaper than replacing spare parts that are simply too expensive to buy and in my case did not fix the problem in any case. It seems to me that the repairers rely too much upon their machines to analyze and not on common sense - look for a physical problem first - cost $99. POSTED BY: MICHAEL - BRISBANE, QLD 14 AUG 2008 ========== REPLY ========== Yes that sounds familiar I also bought my brand new Holden Barina in October 2005 and it had a 3yr warranty with Gympie Madills and then an extra 3 yrs warranty with Holden. In the start of 2007 I started having problems - it was running badly when cold and spluttering and generally not performing well so we brought it back to the Gympie Madills Holden store to find the problem. After quite a few weeks - during which they replaced quite a few parts which might have been causing the problem. They returned the car to me saying it was fixed (all under warranty). Within a few days it was obvious that there was no change to its problem so we returned the car to the workshop - however I was to go overseas soon, so we gave them my fiancés phone number and contact details, as he would be the one collecting my car as I would be away. However no one contacted him and two weeks later when he was to drive my car to come and pick me up he called into the store to find out what was happening. Well he could pick up the car but they handed him a bill of $500 because apparently it was a dirty fuel problem. Firstly why did this take them weeks and weeks to find out and why did they take 11hours to diagnose? After some discussion about why he wasn't contacted when they realised that this would not be a problem covered under warranty and consequently we would have to pay - we paid the bill and said we were not happy with the service. He then said we would not be bringing the car back to their workshop and he asked whether this would void any of my warranty - They said NO the warranty would not be affected. Since then we have kept up with all my scheduled services (at other workshops) and now less than 4 years after purchase the air conditioning has stopped working and after taking it back to Gympie Madills they have said we have no warranty because it has been serviced elsewhere! We have taken the car to a qualified auto air workshop and have been told that it will cost almost $1200 to fix the air con problem. Again we approached Madills to see if they could help us with a part of the cost because the car hasn't even done 40000klms in 4 years, still has its original tyres and has generally been well looked after. Basically they have told us that they want nothing to do with the problem even though the workshop where we got the air con problem diagnosed has said that they think this is a common problem amongst Holden vehicles. The worst thing is a lot of my family members advised me not to buy from that dealership as they had had a lot of problems - but I really liked that car and wanted to give them a benefit of the doubt. Guess I should have listened to those who had told me Madills wouldn't look after me! I certainly won’t be going back. POSTED BY: K PLUKAARD - GYMPIE, QLD - AUS 12 OCT 2009 ========== REPLY ========== I have a 1998 SB 1.4 manual, had problems with stalling, speedo failure. To fix both these at once a new speed sensor at approx $250 installed fixed the problems (this part located at rear of gearbox near firewall). The end of the original had disintegrated or fell off! ISSUE: |
My Carnival had a motor replacement at 45000 kms 2 yrs ago. This month after the 60000 service and replacement of struts decided it was time to sell before anything more happened. At trade in a REVS check showed the new motor number to be under finance and belonging to a car in another state. I contacted Kia who said it was not their problem. I have had to contact the relevant road authority who has confirmed that both cars have the same engine number. I am still waiting on the car dealer to accept this information so I can trade in the Carnival. When replacing the engine I had to get consumer affairs to assist in having the job completed. My car was in a service garage for 3 months. They were very helpful. This time they do not seem to be able to assist greatly with the engine number issue. Kia appears to be above the law selling goods not fit for their purpose and taking no responsibility. I wish you luck but it does not appear that there are any advocates out there for Carnival owners, one of the current affair shows might be of more assistance. |

| NISSAN PATHFINDER 2006: NISSAN 4WDS NOT TO BE USED FOR 4 WHEEL DRIVING? *CONSUMER FEEDBACK* |
||
ISSUE: |
I bought a brand new Nissan Pathfinder in May 2006. I advised Nissan that the air conditioner wasn't working when I first attempted to use it in November 2006. The car has been to a local dealer on five occasions between November 2006 and March 2007 to have the problem rectified. After picking the car up from the dealer for the fourth time my husband and I decided to go the beach and of course we drove our car on the sand. When we returned our car to the dealership for the fifth time to have it repaired the dealership advised that the heater control box had sand in it and that the part now was not covered under warranty and the cost was $1770.00 excluding labour. I explained that the air-condition had not been working prior to ever being driven on the beach. Nissan dealership said they were aware of this fact however the warranty department stated that they did not put the sand in the car therefore it isn't covered. The service manager advised that cars air conditioner had to be in recirculation mode to ensure that sand did not enter the air conditioner. I advised that I had read the manual thoroughly prior to driving on the beach and that no such information was in there. I then advised the service manager to find the information in the manual and highlight it. I said if this info could be found I would pay. He couldn't find any information. My car is still sitting in a hundred pieces in the workshop and I refuse to pay for the car to be fixed. I have now been advised that the car should not be driven on the beach at all despite the fact that Nissan advertisements of the pathfinder clearly show the vehicle being driven on the beach ... false advertisement! After contacting the complaints department at Nissan the customer service officer LAUGHED and said "well how do you think people survived before air-conditioning". He also stated that he would call me back ... that was 11 weeks ago and I have called regularly since then and he has not called back. I have since contacted Fair Trading who are investigating the matter and had to recently contact Nissan Japan to find out who was in charge of customer complaints in Australia as not one Nissan staff member would advise me of his name. I can't believe that Nissan are using the excuse that I Should Have Known to turn the air conditioner to recirculation when their manual states nothing about it. Besides on the day that I drove to the beach I had an ex Nissan employee with me who did warranty for Nissan for 9 years state that he had never heard such **** and that this is just something Nissan do to avoid warranty ...They put it back onto the customer. I got more sense out of Japan customer service then I have from any member of Nissan Australia since the day I purchased my vehicle. Oh and by the way my fuel gauge doesn't work and Nissan have stated that they don't know how to fix it and that I need to just wait and till they work it out. My family buy new cars every 18 months to two years and we all currently have Nissans ... two Patrols and one Pathfinder. We will never buy another Nissan Again so for the sake of a $1770 part Nissan have just lost three very loyal customers who combined spend around $180,000 on Nissan vehicles every 18 months to two years. Try a different dealer, when my Patrol had a fault, I took it to one dealer and they said they couldn't fix it, tried another and not a drama in the world. What ever car you get, driving on sand, the sand does get everywhere.Good luck with it. Hope they will fix it and you will keep your faith in Nissan. Toyotas are not as good as you think. Try a weak front suspension and drive train... BTW I don't work for Nissan, I work for Mazda. |

POSTED BY: C WALLIS - GLADSTONE, QLD 26/3/2007 ========== REPLY ========== We own a 3 year old Nissan Patrol wagon 3litre and the engine went into what "they" call limp mode. Well we got the information back today with the bill and the report says that the car had fault code 57 which relates to the start of injection control. On further inspection and visual inspection we ascertained that certain major components needed to be replaced. These parts included the advance piston (due to wear), supply pump (metal hardening coming off) and ECU (due to possible failure). So what I can't understand is that our car has only done 78,000kms and this is already happening and Nissan are saying to us bad luck it is JUST out of warranty. Now I read that your car has had trouble at 95,000kms. I have spoken to a few different people about this matter and everyone says that with that many kms it has to be a faulty part and it is Nissan's problem not ours. ========== REPLY ========== I like your story but I am really really agreeing with you too. Sorry you had to go through all that … Wish I was there before you decided to purchase an Astra. As a mechanic I work on a whole lot of them up to my neck. They are so badly engineered true ... Germans! They organised the idea? Anyway, most of the things that fail the car are let's start with the battery. If the battery doesn't provide the required voltage, NOTHING works … No accelerator, nothing. Because the accelerator is electronic and it doesn't have a cable. So nothing works because it needs voltage. Anyway that's the start to many stuffed things those Astras and Vectras have. I hope you've gotten rid of it. POSTED BY: SARA SEROKA - BRISBANE, QLD ========== REPLY ========== SARA SEROKA said: "They are so badly engineered true...Germans! They organised the idea?" Fair go! | CITROEN C5 ESTATE 2003: RE: CITROEN C5 - THIS IS A WELL NAMED BRAND - CITROEN MEANS LEMON *REPLY* |
||
ISSUE: |
RE: CITROEN C5 - This is a well named brand - Citroen means lemon (see below) I had the unfortunate experience too of buying a Citroen 2003 C5 Estate. I sold it with @ 12,000 km on the clock. It was @ 2.5 years old. Nearly impossible to get thru to Customer Service AND have Customer Service acknowledge that there was indeed a problem. I only got thru to Citroen when I threatened to go public and I received a call that they would fix it. However, what a relationship with one's car manufacturer. Being told one minute that these things happen due to wear and tear as my car was an old car, then getting it fixed only thru my threats of media involvement? I decided I had a life to live, so got rid of it. An example. My rubberised volume knob. It was becoming un-rubberised at under 3000Km. Got told it was wear and tear. They stated that they couldn't change the knob as it was inbuilt into the unit! Finally, after my service I got a little packet with two knobs in it. One knob for the climate control (unscratched) and one for the volume control (scratched). You aren't alone. Bill |

========== ORIGINAL POSTING ========== "Citroen means lemon - and what a lemon. I'm surprised to see only one Citroen mentioned herein. Can only assume most people who buy these junk cars can't type. Would you believe in 80000k's I have spent more than the trade-in price for this beauty? I tried to trade it in on a Mitsubishi 380 and at a time when Mitsubishi was laying off workers because of poor sales. They sensibly said "no thanks, we can't do a deal on a Citroen" can't knock them for good common sense can we. The only thing worse than the car are the agents. According to them, the reason the car would stop anywhere, any time, was "my wife wasn't applying the throttle correctly - yeah, right. It ran on five cylinders for about six months before they would replace the coil pack. New front discs and pads before 8000k's. Replace harmonic balance @ 12000k's. Numerous electrical problems. 62000k's - both struts replaced. 73000k's - radiator needed replacing. There are numerous other problems that I know you won't be too interested reading, but if you don't read anything else read this: DON'T BUY A CITROEN. Or you'll be sorry. Bye from Nev. " |

| HOLDEN ASTRA 1999: WHERE TO START? FAULTY A/C COMPRESSOR, IDLE UP SOLENOID ... *CONSUMER FEEDBACK* |
||
ISSUE: |
I have a 1999 Holden Astra TS CD. The chassis says 12/99, so you can call it a 1999, or you can call it a 2000. But anyways, the point is, I've had a fair bit of trouble with this car and it doesn't make me happy. * Firstly, the timing belt went that cost a fair wack to fix. That went at about 110,000km. I got the car at 95,000km so I don't know if it has been replaced before that. But I've heard they need replacing more frequently than most cars. The car still makes a rattle coming from the timing belt area, although it is not as loud as it used to be when the timing belt needed replacing. * The biggest problem I have had is that I needed a new air-conditioning compressor. So that was $950 worth to fix it - wasn't happy Jan. The fella was showing me another faulty compressor off a 2002 Astra which only had about 45,000km on the clock. I think my compressor went at about 120,000km or somewhere there of. My car is at 140,000km now. * Now I have a new problem. Which has been apparent for about 8 months. I've had it checked out but they haven't been able to find the problem. I took my car for a service yesterday and I got the guy to have a look at the problem again and he reckons that I may need a new idle up solenoid. What is happening with the car is that when I go change the gears down to 2nd and 1st the revs go down to about 500rpm where at that point the car shudders, and sometimes it even stalls if it goes lower than 500rpm. To avoid this problem for the time being, I change the gears sooner while the car is at a rev higher than what I would normally change the gears at if the car wasn't having this problem. * Also, just to add to my collection of problems, if you have an Astra, pray you aren't stuck out in the middle of nowhere with a flat tyre. Because believe me, if you get a flat tyre, don't expect to be able to get the wheel nuts loosened with a cross bar even with one person jumping on one bar and the other person pushing the bar up. I had to get RACQ to come out and loosen it. The RACQ lad said that he recently had another Astra with the same prob. I rang Bob Jayne where I get my tyres done at, and upped them but they claim that the nuts are tightened to pressure which is standard. RACQ lad reckons that the nuts may be biting into the alloy. * My mate is an autolecky and he is always telling me that he always gets Astras in for probes - particularly with the power windows. But when things need fixing, I tell ya, it's painful to keep hearing that "oh that's a big job on those Astras!" Euro cars for ya. * Other than all of that, the car goes pretty well. It's quite sturdy, by RACQ its one of the top 10 safest cars. Doesn't feel like a little buzz box that would just crumble on impact and it has excellent fuel economy for a 1.8lt - for a petrol car anyways, not comparing with greeny cars. |

| HOLDEN ASTRA CD 2002: I WANTED TO TAKE TO IT WITH A SLEDGE HAMMER *CONSUMER FEEDBACK* |
||
ISSUE: |
First mistake - purchasing a Holden Astra (CD) 2002 off the floor. Second mistake - keeping the lemon - here's a short list of what I have endured: - 1st year - back drivers side window fell down into the door and had to be fixed by Holden - not good. - At the first warranty service the mechanic asked me if I had any electrical problems with the car - I said "No, Why?" He said because that particular model Astra had electrical problems like just stopping / ignition problems etc. My sister-in-law also owns an Astra (same vintage as mine) and about a week or so later; her Astra decided to magically stop in the middle of an intersection and the immobilizer came on while the car was running - needed towing ... this has happened to her twice. - Ignition problems - depends on how my little Astra is feeling - sometimes I can hop in the car and turn it on; some days I can't. Is especially painful when you are out somewhere and you get stuck because you can't turn your relatively NEW car on. - Aircon - a coil in the aircon blew (about 5 minutes after the warranty ran out) - I took it to a service guy - he said $400 to fix - I said cool, fix it. He calls a few hours later to tell me that my condenser has seized in his hand (?) and will need to be replaced - total cost $1,000. I went to pick up the car and the air was working - paid the $1k. Service guy says "by the way; you can't use it". I say "I'm sorry? I just paid you $1k to fix it - why can't I use it?" - Service guy says that there is an electrical problem with the fan and I need to take it to an auto-electrician. Says that if I use the aircon and the fan cuts out I will blow up the new condensor and be up for another $1k. Luckily for me … his best mate just happened to be an auto-electrician. Fan still cuts in and out. - Radio - what a beauty. Some days it will work; other days it won't. BUT if you go around a sharp corner and give it a gut full (because you're hot - air's not working and you're sweaty and angry and you can't even wind down a window for fear of it falling in) and magically; the radio will come back on. Some times when this happens; if you're really lucky; the fan will come on at the same time. Those days are gold. - Back drivers window fell in again - this time, the service guy was using the main switch located in the driver's door to try and get the window to move. He burnt out the main motor - of course it wasn't his fault - total cost to replace and have window fixed $600. - Battery has already been replaced; traction control lights flick on and off as they choose; it has been pranged twice (not my fault) and trolleyed 3 times. I have spent over $6k in repairs. Some days you just have to laugh. I laughed yesterday when I traded her in. But for some strange reason I will actually miss her dysfunction ... NOT. The above is only the tip of the iceberg - I will NEVER buy a Holden EVER again. I have just picked up a Mazda SP23 - I feel really lucky 'cause the aircon works and so does the radio. Will keep my fingers crossed. |

I bought my car new in 2004, now it's done ~53,000 km and since buying I found that the gear would not go into first gear at times (after numerous attempts). | HOLDEN BARINA SB 1999: STEERING WHEEL CRACKING NEAR HORN BUTTON *FEEDBACK WANTED* |
||
ISSUE: |
Let me just say I have had no problems with this car but one - that is the steering wheel has cracked right next to the horn button. Not only is this annoying but takes away from the look and pride I have in this car! My car was left for a year while I was given a company car only to find that my steering wheel had cracked and that while sitting idle without me this had occurred. I then followed this problem up with a dealer in Frankston only for him to tell me it was my fault and that I needed to pay $650 for parts and labour. Not only was this shocking but this happens to most Barinas, Astras etc. Can Holden do something or is this just what I'm left to deal with. Can anyone help? My car is great but this is just Holden blaming the customer for poor design of the car! |

| KIA RIO 2004: EVERYTHING WENT WRONG *CONSUMER FEEDBACK* |
||
ISSUE: |
It was my first brand new car and I will never buy another one. I had nothing but problems with it and was glad to see it written off when a tree landed on it. The first thing of a long list of problems was the front passenger's door dropping three inches so it was not able to be closed. Then, we had to have a new clutch and slave cylinder put in it and hoped that it would fix the bad shudder and wobble it had. This was at 10,000kms mind you and the car was not flogged or abused. Two months later we had it taken away again on the back of a tilt tray this time as I was caught at 11.00pm in the middle of nowhere without a moving car. The MAP sensor had gone in the computer; several complaints were made to Kia Australia. After a week of having no car and no way to get to work it finally arrived back at the local dealership. It was good for about three months and then the clutch went in it again. I was getting fed up with it by this stage and when I took it back to the dealership it was apparently a thing that went wrong with these types of cars. Finally after I got it back for the fourth time after having all these problems it was parked at home and had a 9.5 tonne tree land on it and write it off. It was not that sad to see it go as I now have a Brand New Mazda3 Maxx Sports and I would give this car the biggest wrap if I was ever asked what type of car to buy, but on the other hand Kia Rio's - NEVER AGAIN! |

Chatted to my mechanic about VW as I was surprised as I thought they had the good German name. He said they have high quality parts put together very poorly. He has VW's in his workshop a lot he said. POSTED BY: ANDREW - SYDNEY, NSW - AUS 11 JAN 2010 ========== REPLY ========== We have a 2005 VW Golf comfortline 2ltr. We spent close to $38,000 + sunroof. Metallic black. Vehicle has 90,000 kms on it, transmission is ****. Have been quoted $7500 - $11,500 to repair. This is even with a service history that notes in the warranty period the same fault that we have now. This model has a completely non serviceable triptronic transmission. | HOLDEN RODEO 1999: MAJOR ENGINE FAILURE *FEEDBACK WANTED* |
||
ISSUE: |
Can anyone shed some light on this problem? We have 99 model Rodeo 2.2 L petrol, with 106,000km. The vehicle has been serviced strictly by the manufacturer's handbook (by an independent repairer, not GMH dealer) and had the timing belt replaced as recommended at 100,000k. The vehicle drove faultlessly for 6000km and now for some reason appeared to have dropped the #1 inlet valve and destroyed #1 piston and associated components. Timing belt still unmarked. As the vehicle is out of its 3 yr/100,000 warranty we have been looking around for a 2nd hand engine only to be told by several wreckers, that we were actually lucky to get 106,000 out of it and they are notorious as a hand grenade waiting to happen. Thus being so it seems that 2nd hand engines are impossible to get and to rebuild this one we are talking around $3500.00. Holden deny they have had any faults with them and as it hasn't been serviced by a dealer don't want to know about it. Any feedback anyone has would be very much appreciated. And if you have a spare engine you want to sell that would be nice too. |

POSTED BY: M KURAN - Melbourne, VIC 16/3/2007 ========== REPLY ========== I have a 2004 CDXI 3.2 and the car is fantastic to drive. It's structural rigidity is brilliant. I get around 7.9l/100klm (36 mpg) on a highway drive from Brisbane to Cairns. There have been some minor warranty claims such as faulty cruise control, front brake rotors replaced at 40k and a broken seal which made for a small coolant leak. Otherwise the car is a rapid tourer. And a friend with a 535 BMW has driven it and says it drives better than his BMW. It has 46000k and I look forward to driving it for another 10 years."
