Early in 20th century Daimler cars were named "Mercedes" after
Mercedes Jellinek (born in 1889)
- the daughter of General Emil Jellinek.
Austrian
Consul General Jellinek bought a 23 horse power Daimler car and entered
it in 1899 "Tour de Nice".
He
named his car "Mercedes" after his young daughter.
He
won the race.
He
encouraged Daimler to produce bigger more balanced cars and
became the sole sale agent for Daimler in many countries.
Daimler
decided to use the name "Mercedes" for their new cars.
