PRESS RELEASE - 2 FEB, 2006

  • 2006 Club Marine Southern 80 – a record
With under a week to go until the 41st Southern 80 it is turning out to be the best yet.
475 entries have been received, which is 20 more than the record set in 2000. 198 of these entries are in the expert class, which compete on the Sunday afternoon. 107 are in the social class which competes on the Sunday morning.
  • From these 475 entries are 276 boats which are traveling to Echuca / Moama for the biggest weekend on the water ski racing calender. 8 of these boats are going to compete of the course 4 times. 169 boats are from Victoria, and with 3 boats from New Zealand the Club Marine Southern 80 is truly and international event.
  • Rob & Dave Sewell are traveling to Echuca from Dunmow in the UK. This will be their 3rd trip to compete in the Club Marine Southern 80. Their best time in the past at this race was 3rd in Unlimited in 2004. This year they are skiing behind The Rock from Ballarat in the Superclass event. Dave is the Formula 2 British Sprint Champion 2004 and Rob was second in the Formula 2 National Championships in 2005. They are looking forward to a terrific and challenging race on the water.
  • Also traveling from the UK are Kelly Turner, Matthew Fielding and James Smith who are competing in the 16 to 19 Boys expert event.
  • Lena Feringa came out to Australia from Belgium for the Sydney Bridge to Bridge and has stayed on to compete behind the 8 Litre boat Sanity in the Club Marine Southern 80.
  • From the USA we have Howard Hoggins who lives in San Diego, he is driver of Sudden Force in Under 19 Boys. Kurt Schoen from Las Vegas is the skier in MOC behind Tinta, whilst Jarred Cooper from California is the other skier behind Tinta.
  • New Zealand is well represented with 2 boat Team Brazilian (Women Expert) and Top Gun (Superclass) again taking on the 126 bends of the mighty Murray River, whilst a newcomer Cytokic is in the MOC class. All together there are 14 competitors traveling across the Tasman for our world class race.
  • The youngest competitor in the race is Taylor Draper, 6 years old from Parkes NSW. She will be skiing behind the Spin Doctor driven by Adrian Heffernan the President of Ski Racing Australia. This boat might provide Taylor with a good omen, as her father Richard ‘Doc’ Draper is a doctor from Parkes.
  • The oldest competitor is Adrian Studley an observer in the Spook. Adrian is from the ACT and is 71 years of age.
  • The oldest driver is Lenny Retallick from Fryerstown, driving his boat Cinders, whilst the oldest skiers are Rudi Stout (NSW) and Adrian Heffernan (ACT) both skiing in the Veterans class.
  • The newest class for the weekend is the Seacraft Sprint which has 9 entries. This class is for the Wooden boats, most who have 6 cylinder engines in them.
  • The most popular engines on the water are for the inboards – Chevy’s and the outboard - Mercury’s. The most popular hulls on the water are the Everingham and Connelly’s.
  • With great weather forecasted for the weekend, many records look set to be broken and a great time to be had by all. Come down to the Victoria Park boat ramp and catch all the action. Cost $15 per day or $25 for a weekend pass. The finish line contains all amenities; and remember no esky’s.
