| John
Bertrand wins Audi Etchells Race 5 (nov 22, 2006)
- The 1983 America's Cup winning skipper Australian
John Bertrand won Race 5 in the 2006 Audi Etchells Worlds, off Fremantle.
Bertrand showed a host of sailors from America's Cup campaign's past
and present, how to win against the best.
- Bertrand famously took the America's Cup from the
New York Yacht Club, who had held it for 132 years. The losing skipper
Dennis Conner had planned to be in Fremantle for a rematch against his
old foe Bertrand. Conner was injured during the Heathrow Airport bomb
scare in August and was a scratching from this International Etchells
fleet.
- Today Bertrand showed a host of sailors from America's
Cup campaign's past and present, how to win against the best. He finished
six boat lengths ahead of 1999 Etchells World Champion Cameron Miles.
American Craig Healy was third, a boat length back.
- Bertrand commented. 'One of the toughest fleet we've
ever sailing in, the depth is phenomenal and every boat that crossed
us, or that we cross seems to have an Olympian, an America's Cupper,
or a top coach. In this fleet the difference between breaking through
or be absorbed back into the fleet is like the thickness of a hair,
the racing is really really close.
- 'We had a good start and we found clear air, we rounded
in second place, our down wind speed was very good and we sailed through
Craig Healy and broke away from there. We are just only half way through
the regatta, so anything can happen from here. Hopefully the old stagers
can give it a bit of nudge.'
- Second placed Cameron Miles. 'We finally got a good
start; we went the right way, kept our lane.' Laughing he commented;
'We thought Bertrand was retired from International yachting. If he
is retired we should have won that race.'
- Craig Healy was smiling . 'We were OCS on the first
race, so we've been very conservative all week. Today we had some space,
as the guys below us were over early. We were close with John Bertrand
up the beat and we stayed tight from there.'
- Yesterday's winner Ante Razmilovic finished fourth,
current America's Cup campaigner Mark Bradford who sails for BMW Oracle
was fifth, Kiwi champion Alastair Gair finished sixth, WA local Rob
Bird was seventh and dual Etchells world champion Stuart Childerley
was eighth. From that famous 1983 campaign Rob Brown was ninth and Skip
Lissiman, the current National Etchells Champion was 12th.
- The series lead has not changed. Jud Smith (USA) leads
the series on 31 points, but behind him there has been a reshuffle.
Ante Razmilovic (GBR) on 35 points, Alastair Gair (NZL) is third with
38 points, Andy Beadsworth (GBR) also has 38 points. John Bertrand is
the leading Australian on 49 points.

Field tightens at Audi
Etchells Worlds (NOV 21, 2006)
- Britain's Ante Razmilovic won the 2006 Audi Etchells
Worlds Race 4 off Fremantle this afternoon, ahead of American Craig
Healy and New Zealander Andy Gair. While series leader Jud Smith has
extended his overall lead, behind him the field is tightening.
- Ante Razmilovic's win today took him to third place
overall in the regatta. The 35 year old Briton is not a new kid on the
block, having won the 2003 European titles, the 2004 British titles
and only being beaten in the 2004 North Americans on count back.
- While Razmilovic has now made a podium claim, the
four times Worlds runner up and three times North American champion
Jud Smith, has further tightened his grip on the 2006 Worlds, stretching
his lead over Britain's Andy Beadsworth.
- Smith is determined to get the monkey off his back.
'It's kind of embarrassing, to have come second in the Etchells Worlds
four times. But there is a long way to go in this regatta and I've learned
not to take anything for granted.
- 'Last year we were leading up until the second last
day and one mistake, and we put ourselves away. We just want to have
a chance going into the last day.'
- Ante Razmilovic sailing with Jezz Fanstone and Stuart
Finn, told the story of today's race. 'Today we started about a quarter
down from the committee boat. We put the hammer down and did not tack
for 20 seconds, Stuart Childerley had the best start; he was about a
length extended on us about four boats down from us and the boats between
us were 'spat out' quickly, then the guys above us fell in behind us.
- 'After five minutes we made a big jump on Stuart and
he fell down behind us and tacked away. Richard Coxon who started above
the committee boat side, reached down towards us. Craig Healy had started
further down the line, crossed us, and we followed Jud Smith and Mark
Bradford.
- 'Down the run we managed to pass Jud and Mark. Craig
Healy rounded the left hand gate, we went round the other. We just beat
him to the weather mark, we were quick down the run and extended five
or six boat lengths and then went on from there.
- 'We are really enjoying this regatta. Brilliant weather,
great venue, great race management, great competition.'
- Andy Beadsworth is currently second overall. 'We were
lucky today. We were buried at the left hand end at the start in the
third row, sucking dirty air. We somehow found a lane, took it, hitched
up, found another hitched up again and lo' and behold we were tenth
at the top mark. So that was a recovery.
- 'Then down the run, we had boats inside us and that
stopped us gybing and so we overlaid. Then we went round the right hand
mark and sailed back through some dirty air. We will get that bit right
soon.
- 'Today was a tough day; we got the hard bits right
and struggled with the simple things. When we start getting the simple
things right, we will do really well.'
Biggest
West Australian sailing event since America's Cup '87 (NOV 16, 2006)
- On Saturday 18th November, 2006 Audi Etchells Worlds
start in Fremantle, Western Australia. It is a major event on the world
sailing scene and this year there is a record 28 boat international
fleet attending with America's Cup sailors, past and present, amongst
the favourites.
- On Saturday morning on Cockburn Sound Fremantle, the
same place that Dennis Conner famously recovered the America's Cup in
1987, more than 70 Etchells crews from Great Britain, Ireland, North
America, New Zealand, Bermuda, Italy and Australia will face the Starter.
- Regatta Committee Chairperson Brian Thornley emphasises
the prestigious nature of the event for Western Australia. 'This is
probably the biggest yachting event in Western Australia since the America's
Cup in 1987.' Since 1975 the Etchells Worlds' has rotated around the
world, with Australians having managed to win six times and in 2006
Aussies are again favourites to claim the title.
- The much anticipated rematch between 'Big Bad' Dennis
Conner and John Bertrand is not going to happen at these Worlds. Conner
was hit by a luggage trolley during the Heathrow Airport bomb scare.
He suffered a blood clot in his leg and following medical advice, he
was unable to make the long flight to Perth.
- However the 'elder statesman' of the class, John Bertrand
who quit Big Boat racing after Australia II's win in 1983 and has sailed
Etchells ever since, is still searching for his first Etchells Worlds
title. The 59 year old master sailor showed he 'has still got what it
takes', decisively winning the last race in the pre-Worlds event last
weekend.
- One of his sailing 'apprentices' Skip Lissiman, proved
the West Australian sailors have what it takes to win the Worlds in
this hotly contested one design yacht racing regatta. Lissiman won the
SLAM 2007 Etchells Australian Championship on the same Cockburn Sound
course, last weekend. Lissiman is no stranger to the big stage, the
49 year Executive Manager of the Australian Yachting Foundation based
at Royal Perth Yacht Club, was one of the sail trimmers on board Australia
II (with Bertrand) in Newport.
- John Bertrand contends this is a hot fleet. 'In terms
of depth, I think this would be one of the hottest championships ever
run. Certainly for the Etchells class. 'My take on it is the Etchells
is the Olympic class in the non Olympic years. Everyone gravitates to
this class for the World Championship.'
- On Friday morning at 9am the official launch of the
2006 Audi Etchells Worlds will take place at the Fremantle Sailing Club.
The Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club (RFBYC) and the Royal Perth Yacht
Club (RPYC) are the host clubs, with the Fremantle Sailing Club providing
the venue.
- The World Championship title sponsor Audi Australia,
also sponsored the 2006 Audi Etchells Nationals. Major Sponsor: Audi
Australia. Premium Sponsors: Maersk Line, Rob Bird's Pro Choice Safety
Products, Fontys Pool Wines, Events Corp and Slam Advanced Technology
Sportswear. Support Sponsors: Perth Integrated Health Clinic, Oak Ridge
Communication Group. Sail-World.com and North Sails.
Lissiman
wins Slam Etchells 2007 Australian titles (NOV 12, 2006)
- West Australian Swan River fleet sailor Skip Lissiman,
who was a member of the 1983 America's Cup winning Australia II crew,
this afternoon won the 2007 Slam Etchells Australian Championship sailed
on the legendary Cockburn Sound.
- This was the final regatta before next weeks 2006
Audi Etchells Worlds, an eight race series which runs from 18th to 25th
of November. This will certainly be one of the strongest international
fleets for many years
- Skip Lissiman with crew Ben Durham and Kane Williamson
won from Mark Bulka, Stewart Nichols and Steve Young from the Melbourne
fleet. Britain's Andy Beadsworth sailing with James McHugh and Simon
Fry were third. Fourth were the Kiwi crew of Alastair Gair, David Ridley,
Carl Peters and Derek Scott.
- Lissiman, who will qualify for the Masters fleets
next May, commented; 'It's funny, in all the years we've never won a
Western Australian title, still have to put that notch on the belt.
We were second in the last Australian Etchells titles in Perth in 2001,
behind Noel 'Nitro' Drennan and today went one better.
- 'It's great to win the Australian title and especially
one with such a strong fleet, less than a week before the Audi Etchells
Worlds.'
- Lissiman is a member of the World's organising committee
and like many of the Swan River fleet sailors, has been 'a little short
of time' on the water.
- 'Our crew time had been a little short. Ben Durham
in the middle, who sailed with James Spithill on the Young Australia
team and is now with the Luna Rossi America's Cup program, had never
set an Etchells spinnaker until we rounded the first mark. We still
have plenty of work to do before the Worlds.
- 'In the last race the weather had settled to a standard
sea breeze pattern. We wanted to go left, it was crowded so we just
reached for the left corner and were well placed at the first mark.
We saw Alistair (Gair) had gone right and was buried, so we just kept
our eye on Mark Bulka and Andy Beadsworth and sailed a little conservatively
for the final part of the race.
- The final race in the series was won by John Bertrand.
He finished sixth overall and his second yesterday and win today showed
he will be a force in the Worlds.
- Dockside the 59 year old, was relaxed. 'This regatta
was a lot of fun and it was great to win today. Sailing is something
that I enjoy immensely but I retired when we won the America's Cup.
I don't sail anything other than Etchells now.
- 'The Audi Etchells Worlds fleet will be red hot. Skip's
(Lissiman) sailing well, Andy Beadsworth's made a fast transition into
the class. Stuart Childerley will be coming from the UK and he has won
two World Championships in fresh conditions. Judd Smith is hot as well;
clearly, he has the technical skills for heavy conditions.
- 'We look forward to being competitive and actually
doing some damage among the young guns.'

ETCHELLS WORLD 2006:
Lissiman leads Etchells after America's
Cup duel (NOV 10, 2006)
- Australia II skipper John Bertrand was this afternoon
beaten by one of his 1983 Australia II trimmers, Skip Lissiman, in a
thrilling America's Cup match racing duel on the final leg of the second
race of the Slam Etchells Nationals.
- Lissiman was second in the first race of this series,
behind the 2004 Australian Etchells Champion Mark Bulka, in this precursor
to next week's Audi Etchells Worlds. Lissiman leads the series.
- The Audi Etchells Worlds was to have the venue for
the much anticipated rematch between American Dennis Conner and Australia's
John Bertrand. Conner, who turns 64 in December, has been forced to
pull out of the regatta for health reasons.
- 'I was in Heathrow the morning of the bomb scare,'
Conner told the North American Scuttlebutt sailing website this morning.
'As you can imagine it was quite hectic. I was hit from behind with
a baggage cart that partially tore my Achilles and caused a blood clot
in my leg. The doctors do not want me to fly any more than necessary
and are not happy with a 35 hour flight to Perth. If the clot were to
be dislodged it can do serious damage.'
- In today's second race Skip Lissiman started at the
starboard end of the line below the famous America's Cup tender Black
Swan. He led the fleet left and was the leader at the top mark. In fourth
place 32 seconds back was John Bertrand, just ahead of 2006 Audi Nationals
Champion Rob Brown.
- The Australian sailing icon flashed down the spinnaker
run and rounded the bottom mark 10 seconds clear of Lissiman. After
the next run, Bertrand rounded the bottom mark 26 seconds clear of Lissiman
and the race for the lead looked all over.
- But the West Australian gained enough early on the
right, as they sailed towards the finish line. Bertrand began covering
in close America's Cup match racing style but Lissiman threw tack after
tack at his old skipper.
- Less than two hundred metres from the finish, on tack
eight Lissiman broke through, crossed Bertrand and held on to take the
gun.
- Dockside Lissiman, who is the Executive Manager of
the Australian Yachting Foundation based at Royal Perth Yacht Club commented;
'A good day on the water for us, but just the first day in a long two
weeks of racing.
- 'We took a long dig out to the right and found a shift
which made up about 20 seconds in the first eight or nine minutes of
racing, so we were close enough to mix it up. We have young backs perhaps
and we were leaning hard, after eight or so tacks, John allowed us a
little separation on the left and we again found a little shift and
crossed ahead.'
- Leaders after two races. 1. Skip Lissiman 2,1 total
3 2. Mark Bulka 1,5 total 6 3. Julian Plante 6,6 total 12 4. Alastair
Gair 10,3 total 13 5.John Bertrand 14,2 total 16
- Racing in the Audi Etchells Worlds starts with the
Practice Race next Friday, with the first Championship race starting
on Saturday 18th November and running through until Saturday 25th November.
- The Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club (RFBYC)
and the Royal Perth Yacht Club (RPYC) are the host clubs for the 2006
Audi Etchells Worlds with the Fremantle Sailing Club providing the venue.
ETCHELLS
WORLD 2006: USA - Australia America's Cup rematch off (NOV 9, 2006)
- The much anticipated rematch between 'Big Bad'
Dennis Conner and Australia's John Bertrand, who famously took the America's
Cup from the New York Yacht Club's skipper in 1983, is not going to
happen at next week's 2006 Audi Etchells Worlds in Fremantle.
- Conner, who turns 64 in December, is considered by
many to be 'Mr America's Cup'. He sailed nine campaigns over two decades
and is perhaps, best known for losing the Cup to the Australia II team
in 1983. In 1987 he climbed back from that defeat to win the prestigious
silverware from the Australians, in the waters off Fremantle.
- The Etchells One Design Class is sailed by many of
sailing's 'big guns' and this year's Worlds Titles will be one of the
classes most hotly contested events, with a strong international fleet
taking part.
- Conner was three times crowned Etchells World Champion.
During the Etchells Worlds of 1991 off Fremantle, he remarked 'the best
sailing conditions in the world, are right here' and Conner was a strong
advocate for the city hosting the 2006 titles.
- The Chairman of the Race committee Brian Thornley
today has confirmed that Conner has pulled out of the regatta for undisclosed
health reasons.
- Conner said today' 'I was really looking forward to
what I am sure will be a wonderful regatta. The venue is great and the
people even nicer. I'll just have to watch from a distance.'
- His arch-rival from those heady America's Cup days,
John Bertrand, is still looking for his first Etchells Worlds title
and he know he's running out of time. He too loves sailing in Fremantle,
and indeed Bertrand sailed here last month finishing fourth in the warm-up
Syd Corser Cup.
- Earlier in the week Bertrand, who turns 60 next month,
warned the regatta will take its toll. 'This regatta will be a fitness
test as much as anything else.'
- Today John Bertrand commented; 'I will miss seeing
Dennis again. But I can understand the situation, the Audi Etchells
Worlds is going to be a very physical regatta and unless you're in good
trim, it would be a big call to race here.'
- 'There are probably 15 crews that can win this event,
it's a field full of Champions, but we will certainly all be giving
it our best shot.'
- Bertrand will be on the water tomorrow for the last
warm up event, the Slam Etchells Nationals, which runs from this Friday
10th November and continues on Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th.
- Even without the big American, the field for this
event and the World titles will be chock full of America's Cup sailors
- past and present.
- The current Australian Champion Rob Brown was part
of the Australia II team, as was Skip Lissiman from Perth. Both these
skippers are in good form and looking to win the Worlds, while Mark
Bradford from Brisbane and Noel 'Nitro' Drennan from Melbourne have
interrupted their Oracle BMW America's Cup campaign to race in Fremantle.
At least seventy boats will contest the Worlds with crews from Great
Britain, Ireland, Italy, North America, Bermuda, Hong Kong and New Zealand
fighting the strong Australian contingent.
- The Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club (RFBYC) and the
Royal Perth Yacht Club (RPYC) are the host clubs, with the Fremantle
Sailing Club providing the venue.
- The World Championship title sponsor, Audi Australia,
also sponsored the 2006 Audi Etchells Nationals. Audi Australia, who
supports a wide range of Australian sailing events including the Audi
Hamilton Island Race Week and the Audi Regatta in Sydney, will be certain
to make these memorable Worlds.
- The Maersk shipping Line is a Premium Sponsor and
their support has meant that 28 containers have brought Etchells to
Perth, from around the world.

Etchells Worlds 2006:
Form guide for Audi Etchells Worlds (NOV 8, 2006)
- The Etchells One Design Class is the sailing class
where the big fella's play, guys like Dennis Conner, Iain Murray and
John Bertrand. The Etchells is a 30 foot day racing boat, of classic
design from 1967, there are more than 50 fleets racing actively around
the world, with hull numbers now up into the 1400's
- Next week the 2006 Audi Etchells Worlds start in Fremantle,
Western Australia, where they will run from the 17th to 26th November
2006. It is a major event on the world sailing scene and this year there
is a record international fleet attending.
- Since 1975 the Etchells Worlds' has rotated around
the world, with Australians having managed to win six times and in 2006
Aussies are again favourites to claim the title.
- Ahead of the World Championships, the warm up events
have assumed greater and greater importance over the last three decades.
- This year in mid October, the Syd Corser Etchells
regatta was raced on the World Championship course and starting this
Friday November 11th is the six race 2007 Slam Australian Etchells Championships.
- 'Whoaaa,' you say, 'it's only a few days since the
Melbourne Cup, whoaa, its not 2007 yet'.
- And you are right! The 2006 Audi Etchells Nationals
were completed in January.
- However, ahead of the Worlds, the National Championship
represents a great warm up event. So November 2006 is the new 2007 (well
for this competitive Etchells fleet anyway).
- In a time shift on the sailing scene, on Friday morning
on Cockburn Sound, Fremantle the same place that Dennis Conner famously
recovered the Americas Cup in 1987, more than 50 Etchells crews from
Great Britain, Ireland, North America, New Zealand and Australia will
face the Starter in the most revealing form guide of the year, the 2007
Slam Australian Etchells titles ahead of 2006 Audi Etchells Worlds.
- Depth and more; the President of Yachting Australia,
Andrew Plympton, who won the World Championship in 1979, John Bertrand
who quit Big Boat racing after a decent win with Australia II in 1983
and has sailed Etchells ever since, still searching for his first Etchells
Worlds title. Rob Brown, who sailed with Bertrand two decades ago, is
the defending Australian Champion and is keen to retain his title.
- The West Australian fleet is very strong. Another
Australia II veteran, Western Australian local Skip Lissiman who won
the last race of the Syd Corser, is looking for some more big results,
as is 2004 Worlds Etchells Master Champion and 2006 Western Australian
Champion Rob Bird.
- Michael Manford, the Australian Champion in 1988,
was second in the Syd Corser Regatta and won two races in the 2004 Worlds,
is one of the top contenders this time round.
- From the East coast, 2004 World Champion Peter McNeil
from Lake Macquarie, and 2004 Australian Champion Michael Coxon.
- Nitro Drennan, who is currently taking a break from
an America's Cup campaign, won the Nations in Perth in the nineties.
Another AC Campaigner competing is Mark 'Squark' Bradford. Victorian
Mark Bulka the 2003 Champion is 'hot' after winning the Syd Corser last
month.
- The overseas contingent is all class. Well known British
sailor Andy Beadsworth, dual Soling Olympian, has burst onto the Etchells
scene and was second in the Europeans behind dual world champion Stuart
Childerly. American-Australian sailor Andrew Whitthome, who grew up
in Perth but is now one of the US West Coast champions, could well feature,
along with the New Zealand Champion Alaistair Gair and Mark Thornburrow,
the top Etchells sailor on the Asian scene.
- Not every competitor can be here a week ahead of the
Worlds, there will be at least another 20 boats then.
- Cameron Miles, who won the title in 1999 and has been
on the podium in each of his four tilts at the titles since, will be
racing at the Worlds, and he has 'deputised' the 2003 Admirals Cup and
2005 Rolex Sydney to Hobart winning skipper, Mark Richards to tune his
boat.
- Principal Race officer Denis Thompson is scheduled
to gun the fleet away for the first races around 10am on Friday morning.
- Slam Advanced Technology Sportswear is sponsoring
the Slam Etchells Australian titles.
- The Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club (RFBYC) and the
Royal Perth Yacht Club (RPYC) are the host clubs, with the Fremantle
Sailing Club providing the venue.
- The World Championship title sponsor Audi Australia,
also sponsored the 2006 Audi Etchells Nationals. Audi Australia are
supporting a wide range of Australian sailing events including the Audi
Hamilton Island Race Week and the Audi Regatta in Sydney, will be certain
to make this a memorable event.
- The Maersk shipping Line is another Premium Sponsor
and their support has meant that 28 containers have brought Etchells
to Perth from around the world.

Line, Rob Bird's Pro Choice Safety Products, Fontys Pool Wines, Events
Corp and Slam Advanced Technology Sportswear.
- Support Sponsors: Perth Integrated Health Clinic,
Oak Ridge Communication Group. Sail-World.com and North Sails.
- Coverage of the event will be intense with mark
rounds and deltas being posted only minutes after the fleet rounds.
