Black Dragon Wins Racing Division As Leader Maximus Withdraws

PORTO CERVO, Italy (September 6, 2005) – After a first day of sunshine and fairly light winds, thunderstorms and flash showers challenged competitors on day two of the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup. The Race Committee postponed the start for approximately 30 minutes until the storm passed. The wind dropped to close to 15 knots from the southeast but later increased, gusting up to 25 knots and providing competitive conditions and surprising results. Germany’s Y3K, owned by Claus Peter Offen, won in the Wally Division while George Lindemann’s 180’ schooner Adela took first among the Spirit of Tradition yachts. American Harry Macklowe’s Unfurled and Italian Filippo Faruffini’s Roma won the Cruising A and B divisions respectively for the second day running. The Racing Division was won by Black Dragon after Maximus lost its mast just a few hundred metres from the finish line, with no injuries.

After the delay of the start, the Wallys were the first division to set out on a 30-mile course taking the fleet northwest through the gap between Cappo Ferro and the Isola delle Bisce, and around the Barretinelli islands to the north of the La Maddalena archipelago before heading back down to Porto Cervo, leaving the Monaci islands to starboard. Magic Carpet Squared, owned by L’Oreal CEO Lindsay-Owen Jones of the UK, once again had the best start among the Wallys and held onto first place right to the finish line ahead of Argentina’s Alexia, owned by Alberto Roemmers with Claus Peter Offen’s Y3K of Germany just 21 seconds behind.

In the Cruising Division A, American Arne Glimcher’s Ghost was out front from the start and held a strong lead for the duration to finish ahead of Harry Macklowe’s Unfurled and Armando Grandi’s Gibian of Great Britain.

The Cruising Division B boats started with the racing division. Italian Filippo Faruffini’s Roma repeated yesterday’s line honours success ahead of Allsmoke and Sei Tu 2. Roma held onto the lead in corrected time as well.

In the Racing Division Skandia, owned by Australian Volvo Ocean Race veteran Grant Wharington, won the start but by the finish Maximus, owned by Kiwis Bill Buckley and Charles St. Claire Brown was leading the fleet before it lost practically the entire mast. Skandia was able to take line honours ahead of Great Britain’s Black Dragon and Favonius of the British Virgin Islands. Black Dragon won on corrected time.

The Spirit of Tradition boats had the final start today. Adela immediately took the lead. She remained way out in front to finish over 20 minutes ahead of Alfredo Canessa’s Whitefin of Italy. Adela retained her lead on corrected time.

The forecast for tomorrow is for lighter winds from a south-south westerly direction, with overcast and rainy skies.
