SUBJECT: TOYOTA CAMRY, 2003 - Timing Case Oil leaks at 70,000km (29/09/2006) *OIL LEAK*

  • "I own three Toyota Camry's. My oldest is a March 2003 4 cylinder auto which I took to my local Toyota service centre for a routine 70K service. I was told that the car had a oil leak coming from the timing case cover area. The service advisor told me that they had a few fail because the factory was applying the sealant incorrectly and under certain circumstances they leak oil. Surely not at 3 1/2 years and travelled only 71232kms. I approached Toyota for assistance which they came back saying that they would cover only 50% of the labour and a tube of sealant. Its a five hour repair so I will be out of pocket for around $300. Not very good Toyota. Maybe I should look at buying a 380 Mitsubishi with a 5 year warranty plus another 5 years on the engine and drive train. It's looking like a real alternative when my lease is up at 4 years. Toyota just said ... go and buy a Toyota...." J Mackay, Sydney NSW

SUBJECT: NISSAN MAXIMA, 2004 - Gas conversion (29/09/2006) *GAS CONVERSION* *ADVICE WANTED*

  • "I want to convert the car to gas however Nissan does not want to comment on doing so. Can anyone give me advice about doing this?" A Rich, Melbourne VIC

SUBJECT: BMW 318i, 1998 - Consumer Advice Sought (28/09/2006) *CAR BUYING* *ADVICE WANTED*

  • "I have recently been offered a BMW 318i for around $19k and whilst I am really tempted am wondering if anyone can offer any advice re running costs. For the same price I can get a brand new Getz/Swift etc but of course these cars aren't in the same class. Mind you they have as many options as the BMW these days. I am really tempted to buy the 318i and need some advice anyone can offer. Many thanks! " A Cohen, Sydney NSW

SUBJECT: KIA CARNIVAL, 2000 - Another Kia Carnival bites the dust! (27/09/2006) *ENGINE*

  • "I have owned our Carnival for 5 years and have been a very happy Kia owner - I thought I had a good one. UNTIL now! Our motor - yes the known faulty motors of 1999-2002 Carnivals has decided to drop the bottom end. Kia have said to me they are not liable for anything given we are outside the warranty even though its a known fault, they have not done a recall and they previously have said they would fix motors that give trouble. They did offer to pay "out of good faith" 50% toward the cost of reconditioning the block only. This means about $750.00 toward a possible $7000 to $8,000 repair bill. That's about 10%. Some back up and repair to "fix a motor that has a known potential problem".
  • If you have a Carnival that still goes, my advice (and I wish I had listened to others now) get rid of it while you still can. I guess mine is worth about $9000 in the current climate as a trade in if going so if I have to spend $6,000 to $7,000 I may as well sell it as a wreck and put the money into something else!" M Wilson, Sydney West NSW

SUBJECT: DAEWOO NUBIRA, 2002 - Re: checking oil for auto transmission (26/09/2006) *CONSUMER ADVICE* *TRANSMISION*

  • Re: Posting - checking oil for auto transmission, J Jones, Melbourne, Vic
"Most automatic, and some manual gear boxes are sealed units. This means there is no real apparent reason for any fluid lose within this device; or any other sealed unit at that. You will not find a dipstick on your gearbox as there isn't one. You will find a red cap labeled 'Trans Fluid' on top of the gear box with a hose protruding from the centre of this cap.
With the motor turned off, remove this cap and blow into it to ensure the breather hose is not blocked. Refit the cap immediately. Now on the side of the gearbox you will find a bolt as big as a finger. Remove this bolt and put your finger inside and bend your finger down. You should then feel where the fluid level is. Be sure the motor is cool before attempting this.
  • There is an easier way if you are fair decent at mathematics. Remove the transmission cap and slowly descend a clean metal rod into the gear box, ensuring you reach the bottom of the gear box. Always use a clean rag when dealing with motor fluids of any sorts. Measure the fluid level according to the position of the fluid on the dipstick you've just made, to the depth of the gearbox and the top of the gearbox where the transmission cap locks on. Remember, gearboxes need to be serviced professionally every 90,000kms or less if the vehicle is thrashed and not properly maintained or cared for." M Woods, Dapto NSW

SUBJECT: DAEWOO NUBIRA, 2002 - Re: Headlight problem (26/09/2006) *CONSUMER ADVICE*

  • Re: Posting - headlight problem, I Webster, Windsor Vic
"I myself have experienced your same problem with the headlights and found it to be a bad earth in the circuit. I recommend following the connections from the headlights to the switch at the steering wheel, ensuring that all connections are complete and secure and that no wires are exposed through the sheath (the plastic coating around the cable). If this is all ok, and your globes themselves are fine, check the charge in your battery. A weak battery will mean not enough power to run the computer properly; resulting in electrical 'hay-wire'. If all else fails, time to see an Auto electrician, good luck mate." M Woods, Dapto NSW

SUBJECT: HOLDEN VT COMMODORE, 1998 - Wagon (25/09/2006) *ELECTRICAL* *COOLING SYSTEM*

  • "I have had trouble with my VT Commodore since I bought it. It has major wiring problems. It kept sending the battery flat, so we got a new alternator fitted. It kept doing the same thing. So we sent it to a auto electrician and he disconnected some wires & it still was playing up. So my partner cut the wires to the alarm system and it was ok for a while. The blinkers stopped working & the fuse was ok. Every now & again they still play up. I Just hit the hazard button & they go again. Now I have to put 3lts water in it every time I drive it. I cant drive no longer than 10 min and it starts boiling. It doesn't show on the temp gauge that it is hot. It makes these creaking noises & I hear it boiling. Water runs out quite fast out of the overflow. I think it may need a new radiator but friend say it may be a cracked head. I am just waiting for it to catch fire." F Reeves, Wangaratta VIC

SUBJECT: NISSAN X-TRAIL, 2003 - Bad Roadside Assistance (25/09/2006) *ROADSIDE SERVICE* *RACQ* *DEALERSHIP*

  • "We bought our X-trail Series 1 new in December 2003. In March 2004, our second child was born. Two weeks after birth, took missus and kids shopping for groceries. On way home, around 14km from home, manual gearbox lost all gears (linkages came loose). Car had 4000km on odo. Car was unfortunately stopped on slight hill blocking traffic.
  • Rang Nissan Roadside assistance. Tow truck sent within 20mins. I had to go with tow truck. However, Nissan weren't prepared to offer any assistance in getting Missus (who just had a C-Section and couldn't lift anything let alone the 2yo toddler and the baby) and kids home. Rang RACQ (who does the Roadside Assistance in QLD) as we were a paying member for 15 years. Spoke to manager - they would not (quite bluntly) help as well.
  • Rang Dealership, who were VERY helpful but had no-one there who could help immediately (did try to contact staff on road, however). Had no choice but to ring boss who was around 20 minutes away who dropped everything to come to our aid. Dealership (Moorooka Nissan) were brilliant and arranged hire car for me when I got back to dealership with tow truck. Had to pay extra to go there with RACQ as it wasn't closest dealership. Car was fixed in 24 hours and has been fine since. Can't say kinder works to Moorooka Nissan as they at least tried.
  • However, I would have though in the circumstances that Nissan or RACQ could have tried a little harder. Obviously 15 years of loyalty doesn't count." A Armstrong, Brisbane QLD

SUBJECT: KIA CARNIVAL, 2001 - No fun at the Carnival (24/09/2006) *CONSUMER FEEDBACK* *WARRANTY* *ENGINE*

  • "I don't even know where to begin with the trouble we have had with this car and Kia Australia. Firstly the steering rack went at 70000km, costing close on $1000. 2 weeks later the car leaked a sludgy mixture but didn't overheat. We took it to our extended warranty repairer who advised us that the head gasket had blown. Upon dismantling the engine the trouble ran deeper. At this point we approached Kia for assistance, but received an overwhelming NO. The cost ended up close on $7000 and 9 weeks of stress for us without a car. We were also advised that it wasn't covered under our extended warranty and that nobody in Queensland could fix it. It had to go to Melbourne (the very one that Kia would have sent it to anyway!) Still Kia refused to come to the party even though media statements had advised otherwise - they used every loop-hole as did our extended warranty company. 2 hours after getting the car back and paying $7000 the car overheated and broke a hose connector (plastic instead of the usual brass fittings!) putting the car in danger of blowing the second engine. I don't understand why these cars weren't recalled and how Kia can continue to sell dodgy vehicles.
  • This has devastated us financially and now we are in the unfortunate position of having to off-load the vehicle and try and buy something else. Unfortunately the repair bill means we will be flat out even recovering those costs. Do yourself a favour and don't buy a Kia." J Davis, Brisbane QLD

SUBJECT: HOLDEN CREWMAN CROSS 6, 2005 - Vehicle misrepresented (23/09/2006) *CONSUMER FEEDBACK* *WHEELS*

  • "Crewman Cross 6 - work vehicle ha ha. Doesn't even have a full sized spare wheel. If GMH can cut corners on one of the most obvious and necessary items where under the skin are other cost cuts. Wheel spanner, what wheel spanner, it failed on the first usage. Oh, and cruise control try setting it at around the legal limit - it hunts up and down a gear every 8 to 10 seconds, true. And thank you Sivyer Holden Moorooka for selling me a new car with 6 months registration.
  • Anyway I own 4 Holdens which I use for work and have been a fairly loyal Holden customer till now. I just purchased a Falcon 1 tonne ute and find that it rides better has more power and is a pleasure to drive. I would never have bought the Crewman if I had first driven the Ford (full size spare and 12 months rego). No more Holdens for me.
  • How can any car manufacturer possibly market a commercial work vehicle with a temporary spare when in conditions such as ours we have 150km or more between towns. By the way, the standard wheels are 17inch, the spare supplied was 16 inch. My mate also bought a Crewman same as mine but his spare supplied new was 15 inch. Says a lot for GMH quality control. I was assured at the time of purchase that the spare was full size but on a steel rim. Well, George was right, it was a steel rim, pity about the size." B Spilsbury, Boulia QLD
SUBJECT: FORD BA, 2005 - Re: Posting - BA Falcon Brake Shudder (23/09/2006) *WHEELS*
  • Re: Posting - BA Falcon Brake Shudder, DR Newbold, Perth WA
  • "Unfortunately this is not the case 90% of the time, although it is basic mechanics 101 that any decent mechanic should know to not over tighten the wheels. The No 1 cause of brake shudder in most late model cars is from drivers riding the brakes going downhill as most if not all late model automatic cars shift in to neutral when coasting. Take your car to a decent mechanic and have the pads and rotors replaced with slotted discs and better quality pads that are made to handle extra heat and all problems will be solved." M Johnson, Sydney NSW

SUBJECT: FORD BA, 2004 - Re: BA Ford that wouldn't start (23/09/2006) *FEEDBACK* *ENGINE*

  • "Re recent posting about the 2005 BA Ford that wouldn't start. I and others in this forum have had similar problems with this model not starting. I posted earlier advice on this and is still available to read (see below). " J Harper, Maryborough VIC
  • POSTING (23/04/2006): "Just had a problem with my BA. Engine wouldn't start. RACV to the rescue. However, advised that due to OHC and variable timing not setting right, engine becomes flooded. Here is the nasty part. DO NOT attempt to keep trying to start vehicle as will do serious damage to the engine - i.e New engine. Try only once maybe twice to clear the throat. That is put pedal to the floor, this will cut out fuel injection and then crank the engine. Few clouds of black smoke and your away. If you persist without success, I was warned that a piston will hit valves. OUCH!!! Hope this helps someone" J Harper, Maryborough, VIC

SUBJECT: HOLDEN COMMODORE, 2003 - Goldy Motors dealership (22/09/2006) *DEALERSHIP*

  • "Had a bit of a issue regarding "Goldy Motors extended warranty". Goldy Motors themselves totally shrugged their shoulders of it and told me to parley with the underwriting insurance company, so that's not a good start. But here's the "good bit". During the time of the repairs to my car I was given a courtesy car, which I returned on the day asked.
  • On returning the car I was told by the General Manager (Mr Loris Cecconi) of Goldy Motors that if I paid the outstanding cost of the repair in dispute he would have the warrant for my arrest (YES you read correctly) lifted, as he had brought criminal charges against me for the "theft" of the courtesy car, absolutely staggering behaviour. I was genuinely horrified and offered to settle on the condition that in my presence he phoned the police and and corrected the matter (no theft had taken place!) He agreed to.
  • Directly after I had paid he then reneged on doing this saying he would take care of this. There was nothing I could do except collect my car. I will point out at this stage Mr Cecconi took some delight in confirming to my partner (now arrived) that there was indeed criminal charges against/warrant for my arrest (my partner is a senior civil servant and a retired Army officer). My partner and myself on vacating the Goldy Motors yard headed straight to the nearest police station to enquire about my "legal" status. The officer on duty was knowledgeable on the matter and confirmed that indeed "Goldy Motors" had TRIED to have charges laid against me, but had been told by the police themself that no crime had been committed and they where not interested.
  • Mr Cecconi is a Con man, I invite him to dispute this in court. My complaint against Mr Cecconi was upheld by DOCEP (the ultimate paper tiger and waste of tax dollars). Here is the relevant paragraph from the letter sent to me from DOCEP: 'For your information, our concerns regarding Mr Cecconi's behaviour were raised with his senior management, who has agreed that his behaviour was unacceptable. Mr Cecconi, himself, has subsequently agreed that the matter could have been managed more professionally. He is aware that any further repetition of such behaviour could be considered an issue in which the Motor Vehicle Industry Board may have regard to.'
  • So be well warned, go to "Goldy's" and that's what you are up against. Regards" G. Shields, Perth WA, Ph: 0409 192 158

SUBJECT: HOLDEN BARINA, 2003 - What Warranty? (21/09/2006) *WARRANTY* *NEW CAR*

  • "I bought a brand new Holden Barina SXI in 2003. When I bought it I was under the impression that it was covered with a 6 year 200,000km warranty (or something like that). I recently put my car in for its annual service 45,000km (its only done 27,000km). The car was working fine before the service. The day I get it back ($350 later), the emissions light comes on. So now I need to pay $700 for it to be fixed. What happened to my warranty?
  • Muirs Holden tells me that I needed to take it to Hunter Holden, where I bought the car to keep the extended warranty. News to me, the only reason I searched for a Holden service centre was to make sure I kept the warranty. Otherwise I would have taken it to any old Mechanic for a quarter of the price. I would like to know how this makes me want to ever upgrade to another Holden, when a car that has only done 27,000km falls apart and is not covered under any warranty that was promised so emphatically by the salesperson when I bought the car.
  • I had big plans of upgrading to a Holden Astra but that will only happen if pigs start flying or hell freezes over! way to win over a customer Holden." M Fullerton, Sydney NSW

SUBJECT: LAND ROVER DEFENDER, 2006 - Land Rover Colander - How do you say never again in French (21/09/2006) *NEW CAR* *DEALERSHIP*

  • "We bought a 2006 Defender as a work / leisure vehicle from ULR in Malvern. We waited 5 months to get it. When it arrived we noticed water leaks after a brief shower. We took it back to ULR to have it looked at . We were told it was just the door seal and it shouldn't be a problem. It is now 7 months later and it still leaks from numerous places. We have had the car for about 17 weeks and "ULR" have had it for 12 weeks. They keep saying it will be fixed this time. They have not provided us with a car to help us out each time they take it to seemingly do nothing to it. If LAND ROVER valued their customers they would just fix the problems instead of leaving them in the void of the head office / dealership. Political merry-go-round of procrastination. We have taken it back 5 times and I believe the warranty that they are all so shy about will have expired before we get it back. Cest la vie ... sorry that's French. How do you say never again in French?" P Hehir, Cowes Phillip Island VIC

SUBJECT: HOLDEN VIVA, 2005 - Never buy a Holden (19/09/2006) *NEW CAR* *CONSUMER FEEDBACK*

  • "My Viva wagon is 11 months old. It has run out of oil twice between services and 3 days ago it was towed in and needed a new brake switch. Guess what - its back in for the same problem. GM don't help." B Arnold, Brisbane QLD

SUBJECT: HOLDEN ASTRA, 2000 - All cars have problems - I own a great Astra (18/09/2006) GOOD NEWS

  • "Fair enough cars break, no matter who made it or what someone has done to it. I don't believe that just because you had one bad experience you would not go back to a Holden dealer. If they treated you badly then fair enough but all cars have their problems. I own a 2000 Astra and have done 122000km. Besides the services and the usual replacements, like brakes and air filters etc. I have had no trouble. About the time belt cam belt issues, Holden actually identified the problem and notified all parties including places like Ultra Tune etc. If you owned an Astra they wrote to you to say that the servicing schedule had been revised. When you buy a car you should always notify the make from which you bought it. In the front of your owners manual is the change of ownership form, fill it in. How can Holden help you if they don't know you own the car! and for that guy who was told the timing belts were dodgy and still drove the car for 70000ks? don't complain about a problem you were told about. If you were concerned you should have contacted Holden. I love my Holden and I'm going to stand up for it. No ones perfect - every cars has problems. Fair enough some are lemons and some don't work well but that's a lack of experience on you the car shoppers part. You need to know what your buying. Don't take anyone's word for it, get the car checked. But I do understand the dealerships that are ***** that's why I would never buy a Ford ever again." C Hayes, Hervey Bay QLD

SUBJECT: FORD BA FALCON MK2 XL UTE, 2005 - Won't start (17/09/2006) *ENGINE* *FEEDBACK WANTED*

  • "13000 km. Tried to go to work. Car would not kick over. Could tell it wasn't the battery. You could smell fuel being burnt. Call NRMA, he came, heard it and said it will kick over. AUTOMATIC. He kept kicking the accelerator then eventually it kicked over and the amount of smoke coming from the exhaust I couldn't believe it. The ute was shaking and sounded like a 1970s Commodore that needed a tune up. He then got it going and said take it to Ford. The electrics or cpu is to blame. Has anyone had the same. I spoke to Ford who said it may never happen again. It has been a week and its been fine. Not sure how much faith to have in my work car. " S Fabrie, Sydney NSW

SUBJECT: FORD FESTIVA, 1996 - 'World's Most reliable car' (17/09/2006) *CONSUMER FEEDBACK* GOOD NEWS

  • "I bought new a 1996 Ford Festiva and had it for 10 years. Put on 300,000 klicks and had only to replace one fuel filter and the CV joints. I had no trouble with anything else. Still has the original muffler, radiator, etc etc I never replaced anything. I think the Kia motor company should be absolutely commended on producing the Ford Festiva. I just had to tell someone" RC John, Harrington Park NSW

SUBJECT: HOLDEN ASTRA CONVERTIBLE, 2005 - More Problems (16/09/2006) *CONSUMER FEEDBACK* *NEW CAR*

  • "I have already added to this site about my lemon - I have had my Computer & Cruise Control replaced & ran out of oil already. And the roof playing up. Since then I have had more problems:
    - The rubber strip on the bottom of the car keeps coming off. I don't ever bother trying to put it back on now, just leave it hanging off, so people can see Holdens inferior workmanship.
    - Also my front bumper is a lighter shade to the rest of the car. I have had people comment to me about it.
    - Both the window mechanisms need replacing now.
    - My seat squeaks.
    - The roof is still playing up & now the windows are playing up with it as well, they wont go up & it makes a ticking sound in the dash.
I was told it cost $20,000 to replace the whole roof. Holdens problem.
  • I ed Holden about my numerous problems & told them it would be cheaper to replace my car, then to keep fixing it. But they do not replace cars & their vehicles meet Australian Design Regulations and Holden has stringent quality control procedures. I have been told stories of Dealers spending double of what the car is worth to keep fixing problems with lemons, because Holden will not replace them. This does not make sense to me. It is no surprise to me now that they have now discontinued the Holden Astra Convertible.
  • Thank god my Dealership is very helpful & doing everything they can for me. No thanks to Holden. When I am out & people comment about my car being nice I tell them it is a piece of ***** & tell them all the things wrong with it. I am going to get a sticker made for it saying "Another Holden Lemon". I regret getting rid of my Kia Spectra, I think I will stick to Asian made cars. " M Peterson, Brisbane QLD

SUBJECT: NISSAN NAVARA DIESEL, 2002 - Issues with Diesel Engines in Narvara's (16/09/2006) *ENGINE* *ADVICE WANTED*

  • "Hi All. I have heard about issues with the Nissan Navara engines in the previous superceded model. I have a 2002, and I seem not to have any problems, although my mechanic tells me what the engines are doing to "big end bearing" or something similar. Sorry if my wording is not correct. Can anybody help me with some advice on the issue. Cheers" M Owens, Melbourne VIC

SUBJECT: HOLDEN TS ASTRA CITY, 2001 - Never buy Holden again - Wake up Holden (16/09/2006) *CONSUMER FEEDBACK*

  • "Upon recent purchase of an Astra that had only done 32,000kms the air conditioning compressor went. Just had it recently serviced at 45,000kms. Now I have found that I am up for more money with the replacement of the timing chain at 60,000kms! To me this is like highway robbery. So to all those Holden freaks out there (was one 2!) I am rethinking of actually buying a push bike. Then at least I can fix it myself cause being a female with all this technology on vehicles now a simple rebuild or spark plug change is out of the question for me! Growing up on a farm I thought I was pretty handy when it came to tinkering with motors, now it's thoroughly out of my depth.
  • In regards to the Astra, I don't think Holden have addressed the faults with this vehicle or any other vehicle faults within their cars. Wake up Holden, your country used to depend on you!" R J Killen, Whitsundays QLD

SUBJECT: MERCEDES BENZ, E320, 2002 - Response to J. Ryan's comments posted: 18/07/2006 (15/09/2006) *DEALERSHIP*

  • "Dear Mr. / Mrs. Ryan
I am the Service Manager of Sandersons Mercedes-Benz. Firstly, neither your name nor your vehicle appears in our database as ever having visited our Dealership let alone 19 times. I tried to send you an e-mail using the mail link that you provided, which turns out to be bogus. Sandersons have been proudly servicing the Eastern Suburbs for over 30 years now. If your statements regarding our company were even remotely true I'm sure this would not be the case. If you would like to discuss this matter further, I invite you to contact me at your earliest convenience via e-mail: bobw@sandersons.net.au or call me directly on (02) 9332 4477. SUBJECT: FORD EF FAIRMONT, 1996 - To person who bought 6 yrs of problems (15/09/2006)

  • "Sorry to hear, how unlucky you have been with your car. My partner and I bought our EF Fairmont with FSH also for a reliable family car. We traded in our XF Falcon ute and got the EF for $5500. Its done 165k and the only thing we have done is a service, changed a light globe for climate control. We have had 1 problem with the electric window not going up. The engine has not missed a beat , central locking button on dash works. Mind you the car was very well looked after. Oviously the previous owner didn't have young children or passengers in it very often. You must have bought the Fairmont that was made on Friday. " B & A Trainer, Perth WA

SUBJECT: NISSAN GU PATROL, 2003 - Loose left hand rear wheel (again) (14/09/2006) *WHEEL NUT* *SAFETY*

  • "In May 2005 I noticed that a wheel nut was missing off the L.H rear wheel of our 2003 GU Patrol. I then noticed that the other nuts were loose. All wheel nuts were then checked, but only the L.H. rear wheel was loose. I figured I must have not tightened the nuts properly after changing a flat tyre. All the studs were replaced by the local Nissan dealership. On the 3rd September 2006, we noticed that the vehicle felt strange when driving after having driven 80kms from a wedding down south. We stopped the vehicle after travelling approx. 1 km and found 3 nuts missing and a very loose wheel. Nissan would not cover this under warranty, let alone under the extended warranty that we purchased in May 2005.
  • I have reported this to the S.A. R.A.A. (Royal Automobile Association). I have since heard from a 4WD service agent in the North of S.A. that this is a problem with GU Patrols with alloys wheels. It has been suggested that L.H. threaded studs be used instead. When will Nissan do something? The disappointing thing about all this is, that I have owned and driven Nissans for over 30 years and I have never experienced any thing like this before." I Jones, Adelaide SA

SUBJECT: HOLDEN VIVA, 2005 - My Viva is also a lemon (12/09/2006) *NEW CAR* *CONSUMER ADVICE*

  • "As did the other Viva owner I brought my Viva in February as well. Right from the start the radio did not work. Holden could not fix the problem. The motor over runs when you change gear. The gear box is sloppy and the vehicle has excess slack in the diff making the car shudder as if you are in too higher gear when you accelerate.
  • Back to the dealer again who told me that all Viva's are the same. Car now has a bad noise in motor. Booked into the dealer for Monday (sounds like a bearing somewhere in the front of the motor).
  • I fixed the radio problem with external antenna. Guess I should have stayed with my Toyota. Still the dealer does not seem a bad chap, maybe I'll get a christmas card." D Carter, Caboolture QLD

SUBJECT: DAEWOO NUBIRA, 2002 - headlight problem (12/09/2006) *ADVICE WANTED*

  • "I have a current problem with my headlamps, they're not working. The fuse is ok and the full beam works on both but I can't get anything from them when I turn them on. I'm no mechanic but nothing makes sense to me about it. It's probably a 5 min fix which a garage would charge me 80 dollars; just like when my warning light came on for engine transmission fault and it turns out the gas cap wasn't turned enough -70 dollar fix! If you can help me please me to save me money." I Webster, Windsor

SUBJECT: FORD BA, 2004 - Dealers - All buyers are liars (11/09/2006) *FEEDBACK* *DEALERS*

  • "I have to reply to "All buyers are liars" Featured posting, because the comments by Andrew are not realistic. First of all he says he is not a car dealer. Fair enough Andrew. But your is: sales@newcarsaustralia.com.au. So you are involved in car sales and you will of course defend car dealers. And comparing buying a car to buying a can of coke? People do not invest tens of thousands of dollars from savings or refinance mortgages to buy a can of coke. It is nowhere near the same thing. And the last time the coke vending machine at my work took my $1 without giving out a can of coke I called the free 1800 number on the machine. Coke sent me a reimbursement money order for $2 (not $1) and apologised on the phone. They then fixed the machine.
  • Last time I called my car dealer about a problem I saw mentioned in this forum I was fobbed off. I felt like I am the only one in the world with a faulty car and how dare I call them to waste their time.
  • As far as shooting the messenger goes. Regardless of where the rules are made, head office or overseas, the average Joe gives his money to the dealer and acquires his car from the dealer. He knows no one else. It is so convenient for dealers to pass blame to a nameless, faceless entity who Joe is told is responsible for his woes when his car has a problem. The dealer gets to neatly sidestep all responsibility.
  • I do not understand how anyone can return for a refund or exchange any faulty goods at a supermarket, electronic shop or white goods shop but have to put up with and live with a more expensive faulty motor vehicle." E Nar, Sydney NSW

SUBJECT: FORD FPV BF GT-P, 2006 - Noise from 6 sp manual in 5th & 6th (11/09/2006) *NEW CAR* *TRANSMISSION* *FEEDBACK WANTED*

  • "I have had this car for 3 months and it is on its 3rd manual 6 speed gearbox. The ongoing problem ( which has not yet been fixed ) is a droning noise when in either 5th or 6th gear at between 100 and 115 km/hr.The Dealer has balanced tail shafts, replaced tail shaft, replaced 2 rear tyres as they thought they were out of round and then they started replacing gearboxes. Apparently the Tremec 6 speed box has a known problem referred to as " 5th gear rumble", which is weird when it happens in both 5th and 6th gear. They even fitted a "certified box " with new gear sets etc, but that was worse.
  • I am now on the 3rd box and 5th gear is a lot quieter, but its all noisy again in 6th. Ford and FPV are not interested in assisting which really helps when you have paid $76k. Anyone else having this issue?" S Joy, Blue Mountains NSW

SUBJECT: KIA CARNIVAL, 2000 - KIA Head Gasket! - I will never go near a KIA again (10/09/2006)

  • "I have also been stung by the terrible workmanship in the KIA Carnival. The head gasket has blown for the second time and I have 2 quotes of $8000 for repairs. KIA are not interested in any responsibility despite it being a recurring problem.
  • Do not buy one! I will never go near a KIA again." B Spencer, Perth WA

SUBJECT: NISSAN PATROL 3L DIESEL, 2001 - more problems! (10/09/2006) *ENGINE* *ADVICE WANTED*

  • "We purchased a Nissan Patrol 3 litre diesel in 2001. Last year at around 46000kms we had problems with the clutch and manifold. Most recently whilst on holidays the piston blew and cracked the head (83000kms). Nissan Australia, responded promptly by supplying a new block, but it wasn't until Huston Ford - Kingaroy removed the motor found the head was cracked.
  • It has now been 6 weeks since the initial breakdown, and we keep getting told it's a "big job". We know that, they've had it in their garage 4 weeks. What amuses us is it apparently only takes 3 - 5 days to put the new block in; what have they been doing the other 15 days? And Nissan Aust. didn't want to know about the cracked head, which occurred at the same time of the piston blowing.
  • Also, apparently the only oil to be put into these motors is NIssan 10 w 40, yet we have receipts from Hustons with 15 w 40 RimulX. Can anyone tell me if these are the same oils, cause that's what Huston's are telling us. According to a Metropolitan dealer - this oil is too thick and is unable to get up into the head.
  • Assuming Hustons have put everything back properly, should this motor now be reliable, with all 2005 / 2006 parts? Appreciate a response from others who have had their motors repaired and whether the car has gone on to be reliable, or should we sell it asap and buy a Landcruiser." L Perry, Wondai QLD

SUBJECT: HOLDEN TS ASTRA, OLYMPIC ED, 2000 - to think I defended Holdens when compared to Fords! (09/09/2006) *CONSUMER FEEDBACK*

  • "I own a Astra 2000 Olympic Edition that has been more trouble than its worth. First service the front headlights were replaced as they were taking in water. Less than 12 month after purchasing new, the air conditioner stopped working. Approaching and slowing at intersections changing down gears with the clutch depressed the engine would cut out. Holden tested the car, replaced the air con yet could not find anything wrong regarding the engine. They tested this complaint at each service and could not find an issue. Taking the vehicle to another service centre some 5 years later they cleaned the throttle body and the problem was solved.
  • Each summer the ignition barrel has seized. Holden has willingly replaced the part free of charge yet I had to pay labour costs. Third time this happened I contacted the RAC who referred me to a locksmith who removed a pin in the barrel, problem fixed.
  • At the 60000kms service I was told the rotors needed replacing. They could not be machined because they were too far gone, warped and it was unsafe to do so. Out of pocket over $600.
  • Just over 90000kms on my way to work, less than 200 metres away from home the car felt like it was pulling/surging heard a noise similar to a tyre puncture. Quickly pulling over the engine died, RAC determined that the cam belt had snapped. I was without the car for over 2 weeks as Holden reconditioned the head, replaced the valves at their expense. 4 weeks on my water pump collapses causing damage to the replaced cam belt and damaging pulleys. This cost me $620.
  • Driving home from the dealership the engine light comes on and the car is surging. Service centre closed, RAC called and issued a towing voucher. Drive again in morning the car runs fine, that afternoon top up fuel engine light comes on and car again surges. When the clutch was depressed the taco needle would fluctuate from 1200 rpm to 0, similar to the first reported engine problem of cutting out. Rang Holden, they say its unlikely to do with any of the work carried out on the water pump and I should bring it in immediately. This was yesterday.
  • Other problems experienced include the brake light globes constantly blowing, stereo occasionally jumps volume to its maximum, door seals are breaking away, front drivers seat does not click into position correctly and makes a squeaking noise, windows make a squealing noise when winding, bonnet locking mechanism fails and cannot open.
  • I regret purchasing this car and I am disappointed at Holdens failure to make public the faults that should result in a national recall." A Calhoun, Boya WA

SUBJECT: FORD MAVERICK 4.2 LWB WAGON, 1991 - it will not idle (08/09/2006) *ADVICE WANTED*

  • "Every so often my 4.2 litre petrol Maverick develops a problem where it will not idle. Some times this occurs after it has just warmed up & the auto choke releases and other times after the vehicle has been running for some time. I have had it checked a number of times without a solution to what is a recurring problem & of course it never happens when I am near my dealership for them to be able to check it out when the problem is present. Usually the first I know there is no idle is when I take my foot off the accelerator and the motor stops because simply no fuel is being delivered to the carby. Any suggestions and solutions to problem greatly received." J Moore, Cardiff NSW

SUBJECT: FORD BA XR6 TURBO, 2003 - INFO on BA Falcon Brake Shudder(05/09/2006) *BRAKES* *WHEELS* *CONSUMER ADVICE*

  • "To Anybody it may concern: On this issue of brake shudder there is only 1 thing that causes this problem - the wheels have been over tightened and unevenly. Because on the BA's and onwards the rotor is a bit larger than previous models, and when the rim is pressed against the rotor too tight it creates a distortion and runout to be untrue resulting in a shudder when brakes are applied.
  • I know there is a Ford issued product bulletin to all of the dealers to correctly torque the wheel nuts at the right specification. If not correctly followed, it creates the above problem. Trust me I've proved it with my own when I had to change a tyre.
  • Another problem is that only Ford dealers know this and not your local tyre fitters or private mechanics (other than a Ford employee).
    I hope this helps "

SUBJECT: KIA CARNIVAL, 1999 - Kia doesn't fix all faults free (05/09/2006) *ENGINE* *CONSUMER ADVICE*

  • "I was told my Carnival had same fault as all others of this period and that Kia were completing 'short motor' replacement. Kia service rep (local) have just told me Kia Head Office will pay only 50% to have the same work done that they have already completed on thousands of the same model. I am suppose to cough up $2,600 to get work done. Kia never recalled Carnivals even though they acknowledged the problem.
  • I can't work out if they are just trying to get me to pay or they just have no goodwill. I was trying to trade the car in on a new KIA and the sales rep confirmed the value of the Carnival was $5,000 less because it had not had this repair done" D Birch, Perth WA

SUBJECT: SAAB - My to Brisbane Prestige (05/09/2006) *DEALERSHIP*

  • "Re: Saab convertible
Bernie, There is NOTHING that pisses people off than to be told ONE thing on the phone-then be told ANOTHER thing to crash them down when face-to-face in the store. Like you did to me last week. Remember? It went like this.
  • You said on the phone that you would:
. Pay out the $17K for the SS Commodore.
. Sell me the SAAB at the online retail price of $33,990 and
. Cover the stamp $650 duty.
  • "Beeeuty!" I thought. "We have a deal". (Hope now up. Enthusiasm on high. Starting to see the SAAB in my garage which is EXACTLY what you wanted?) So I changed an appointment, scuttled over to see you and ... When you got me down there in the showroom where I can smell the leather, you THEN give me the bad news (Using the good guy/bad guy routine with your boss in his glass cage), telling me that you had made a slight mistake, and that you would:
. Pay out the $17K for the Commodore.
. Sell the SAAB at the online retail price of $33,990 BUT
. Not cover the $650 stamp duty after all.
And you looked so sad and pained when you shared this little gem with me. (You ought to nominate for a Logie or even an Oscar - I almost felt like whipping out a hankie for you)
  • Maaaaate ...Give me a break! I may LOOK only 21 years old, but I didn't come down in the last shower. You boys were getting me on a string and pulling my chain. You were hoping that I'd just swallow the $650 to keep the dream alive and get the car. "After all" you helpfully explained "It'll only be a dollar or so each month on the lease".
  • Fact is, BERNIE, you were, in short, trying to smart-arse me into that SAAB. My response was to remain outwardly calm (customers will do that you know. Ya gotta watch 'em) while seething on the inside. I smiled goodbye, and off I stumped to pay a deposit on a car elsewhere where they tell it like it is. John Walsh is his name. Nice bloke. You boys could learn a thing or two offa him, let me tell you!
  • Then, after signing up and giving John my cheque, I shambled off home and vented my spleen about Brisbane Prestige on a couple of them there "what I hate about car dealers" websites. I felt, let me tell you, much better after that. But you know, it still didn't stop me telling all my buddies at the barbeque on Saturday night about the games they like to play at Brisbane Prestige. I should point out that the gang were VERY surprised. As we all agreed over a beer, you'd EXPECT silly mind-games like that from a suburban yard flogging off $6,000 cars. But at an inner city dealership for European vehicles? Surprising indeed! But there you go - Truth is stranger than fiction! In fact, there was a moment there that we talked about how I ought to:
. tell you on the phone that I was interested,
. get you to come over and
. THEN tell you that the missus said I couldn't buy the car after all. (See, Good guy/ Bad girl. It's a twist, but the basics are the same)
  • But alas, I am a straight shooter, so I couldn't bring myself to do it. Would've been fun though, don't you agree? Anyway, Bernie, I'll love you and leave you ... and look forward to giving Brisbane Prestige SAAB the finger whenever I drive past in the convertible.
  • Cheers, Jerry
PS. One of my barbeque buddies has a SAAB Viggan, which is coming up for a lease renewal in the not-too-distant. You know the model? A little over $100K if my memory serves me right. Unlike me, he doesn't buys used cars. He likes 'em shiny and new. He loves his SAAB, and is looking forward to getting another. But ... Not from you, not from you.

SUBJECT: HOLDEN RODEO, 1999 - Oil pump failure - common problem Isuzu V6 petrol (05/09/2006) *OIL PUMP* *CONSUMER ADVICE*

  • "I can only tell anyone looking at buying ANY Holden with V6 petrol Isuzu motor (eg. Rodeo, Jackaroo) to be very careful:
My oil light came on. I drove maybe 120 secs more, and my motor is now trashed - its about $7000 to replace it. Basically the oil pump failed suddenly. There is plenty of oil in the sump - but none of it made it into the engine. I now see reading the 'net that this seems to be a common problem for 98-2002 Isuzu's. Even those in the US market as used in the "Trooper" are suffering the exact same situation.
  • If you already own one - my advice is you IMMEDIATELY fit a $50 aftermarket oil pressure gauge so you can see if the oil light comes on if you have sudden failure of oil pressure. At least that way you can jump on your clutch and turn your motor off straight away and MAYBE save it ... You have been warned!" J Johnstone, Brisbane QLD

SUBJECT: HOLDEN VX SS, 2001 - Bad news VX SS - Good news Astra Convertible (04/09/2006) *NEW CAR* *CONSUMER ADVICE*

  • "What a NIGHTMARE my Holden Certified VX SS turned out to be. I was led to believe by Armstrong Holden (Woolloongabba) that at 50,000km I was the second owner. Turns out I was the third. Holden certified? Hello?
  • At 76,000 km there's this hole in the exhaust. I take in, and they tell me that there's a Sports Exhaust fitted (said in an accusatory tone). When I pointed out the fact that it was news to me, and that it was on there when they sold it to me, he says "Well, failure at 76,000km is normal wear & tear" So, go whistle for it.
  • Similar responses were received when:
The brakes failed going over the Story Bridge.
    The rear seat belt failed.
    The coolant level started falling.
    The passenger power window failed.
The diff started binding when cornering.
The central console flap failed. (Oooops. Sorry, they DID fix that one!)
The whatever-it-was trapped in the door sill rumbled the length of the car during heavy braking/acceleration.
    The hazard lights jammed on.
The exhaust support rubbers REPEATEDLY failed.
The paint on the bonnet started showing where a REMAX real estate sign had been removed, then over the next four months, mottling to a different colour to the rest of the vehicle. Aaaaagh!
  • I sold it at 120,000k, and good riddance!
  • Anyway, after vowing NEVER to buy a Holden again, I purchased an Astra Convertible. (Tiger for punishment, me!) Seriously, the difference is AMAZING. Made in Belgium, the only thing Holden about it is the badge. The paint is great, the finish is sensational, the soft top is a dream. What an amazing difference! And what a shame Holden can't get their act together with locally built cars." J Crockford, Brisbane QLD

SUBJECT: KIA CARNIVAL, 2003 - Warranty? (03/09/2006) *WARRANTY* *NEW CAR* *CLUTCH* *CONSUMER ADVICE*

  • "Car bought new 09/2003 - problems include:
CD player has died 4 times, central locking died once, alternator died once, all fixed by dealer.
Now at only 62000 km's, almost out of warranty, front brake discs need machining, AND the clutch slips badly. Both the dealer & Kia Motors Australia suggest this is acceptable due to routine wear & tear, to be replaced at my expense ($1450) - so do I have to replace a clutch every three years in the Carnival?
  • General Comment:
nice car, very comfortable & quiet, large turning circle, good fuel economy on highway, much reduced around town (we live in country area, not much stop/start city driving), not good low-down power." W Baker, Albury NSW

SUBJECT: HOLDEN RODEO 4WD TURBO DIESEL, 2005 - What a mistake (03/09/2006) *BRAKES* *SAFETY* *CONSUMER ADVICE*

  • "Bought this Rodeo 2005 model 4wd diesel in Feb 2006 after trading the previous model which had fuel pump and seizure of brake drum problems. Assured by dealer that new model was o.k. What a mistake.
  • Before the 5000km service, needed to take back to find out why it wouldn't start. To get it going you had to raise the bonnet and pump to make fuel lines work. At 5000km service reported the same fuel line stoppages which were becoming more frequent. Asked to have the hand brake checked as it was difficult to put on and jammed on and also difficult to release. Again informed that everything was checked and found to be o.k. At 9000km and before had problems with car letting go and rolling. Alright when you're in the vehicle you can adjust the handbrake.
  • Latest incident: On farm drove vehicle to check cattle. Stopped the vehicle leaving dogs in stock crate on the back. Switched off motor, car left in gear, the handbrake on. Got out of vehicle and left to walk to check stock. Five minutes later see and hear rattling coming from vehicle... its moving getting faster and finally crashes. Dogs fortunately unhurt. Everyone in shock. Walk home 3km. On advising dealership of incident they do a once over of vehicle and pass the buck to Holden who promptly say there's no problem and they wont even inspect the vehicle with an independent assessor. All I can say is don't rely on your handbrake or brakes. There are serious problems with the type of handbrake supplied, its inability to do its job effectively and Holden just ignore these incidents hoping they will go away. I believe this car has the ability to cause serious injury or even death to those who rely on it to be safe and reliable as its advertising promotes. Will
never trust a Holden again. Please everyone out there who drives a model the same, get it checked out properly, don't let this happen to you. Safeguard your family members and your canine workers. " S Smith, Romsey VIC

SUBJECT: HYUNDAI ELANTRA, 2004 - I'll never buy another Hyundai (03/09/2006) *NEW CAR* *CONSUMER FEEDBACK*

  • "I bought a new Toyota Corolla in 1992. I sold it in 2004 before I bought my new Hyundai Elantra. The Toyota went the last three years without a service, and still was in great running order when I sold it. After 12 years and a few hundred thousand ks the only things to go were the wiper blades and the steering column made a dry rubbing sound. It was still on the original clutch. My Toyota was an incredibly reliable and top quality build.
  • I paid an extra $6000 to Hyundai because the new car I wanted from their showroom had low profile tyre and body kit - The tyres were illegal and had to be replaced. It took me months and many many phone calls to convince Hyundai to go halves with me in very cheap replacement tyres which were not low profile ... the rear spoiler catches and snaps the aerial ... it's probably my imagination but the engine does not feel like it has as much power as it did when I bought it a couple of years ago - I can't get up my friend's steep driveway in first gear. All the plastic things inside the cabin seem to be wearing at a very fast rate - sometimes I am scared to talk loud just in case the plastic falls apart.
  • And most of all, I would love to know who verifies their fuel consumption claims. " A G, Brisbane QLD

SUBJECT: DAEWOO LEGANZA, 1997 - Leganza timing belt broken for second time (01/09/2006) *FEEDBACK WANTED*

  • "We own a Daewoo Leganza which broke a timing belt (camshaft belt) 47000km's after it was fitted as part of 90000km service. GM Daewoo agreed to cover the parts because it was over the two years covered by parts warranty. The book recommends the belt be replaced every 90,000km's. Just recently the belt broke again this time at 34,000km's and under the 2 years covered by parts warranty. The car was well within the warranty period this time and the inspection carried out by GM dealer found no other cause for the belt breaking.
  • Almost a week later the dealer contacted us and told us the water pump had caused the belt to break. I would like to hear from anyone who owns a Daewoo and has had a similar experience." I Cauduro, Bega NSW
